I freaking love any place that can combine pretentious McKinney Moms, PBR and ping pong. You had me at PBR. Unfortunately it delivered on two out of three. We just ate an early dinner here so I'm fresh off my first impressions of The Yard. Mathew, who spells his name completely wrong, was young, cute and if I had a time machine I'd go back to when my boobs weren't punching bags and probably still not land a date with him. He was incredibly charming, personable and also completely swamped. Walking up I saw tons of McKinney's finest moms who are usually yelling on Moms FB pages about red dye and gluten. Instead of yelling at kids they were getting "Mom Sloshed" which for you non breeders means lightly buzzed, enough were you don't regret having kids but do regret marrying the dude. We need these places. Chuck E Cheese missed out when I told them 10 years ago to serve booze. I think I said "Give them booze and they will come" all Field of Dreams style. They totally missed the boat. The Yard gets it though. They know that booze is the missing X in the equation x + x = good parenting. While I can totally sympathize with folks being pissed about kids running around, I think we should embrace places that allow us to drink some booze and let the kids get fresh air. I was totally fine sitting on a bench, drinking my perl rose cocktail and enjoying beautiful weather. The place has a great concept. The cocktail was good, really good. I'd suggest either lowering the price point or upping the portion because it does not feel like a $10 cocktail. (8 with happy hour) It's beautiful but because there's a lot of empty space in the glass, you seem cheated. That being said I highly recommend it because I do think it's good and strong if you drink it fairly quickly, but it's also one that if left alone can melt and water down. Again...I think it's a reasonable $8 drink, but doubt I'd pay $10 unless it was bigger. It's Texas. We want big gulp cups of booze. We got the beer cheese dip which was $5 on happy hour. It was cold. We asked for it to be reheated and for napkins. Neither happened. We just kept eating the cold cheese which wasn't even bad. I bet it's awesome hot. We finally got napkins on the third try. I got a club and Manchild ordered the burger which was $10 happy hour priced. When Mathew (dude...it's Matthew!) brought our food he asked if we wanted more booze. I asked for a PBR. I grew more and more sad when I realized that wasn't going to happen. Look...you can tell me there's no kale, no green tea, no acai...but don't tease me about PBR. I asked for it twice before giving up. Luckily we weren't charged for it. If I'd have gotten it to accompany my club sandwich this would be a solid 4 star review. The sandwich was good as was the burger. The prices are a few bucks higher but you pay for downtown McKinney and a place for your kids to run. I think if this place can get three more Mathews, maybe spell his name right, this has potential for me to bring not only my kids but my college friends, mom friends, etc. I just need good service. I can excuse mediocrity on a food level or drink level (this place is solid though on both) if you give it to me hot and with a smile....or with a PBR. I heart you PBR. read more

This place is a go-to for friends and family alike for me. Since the pandemic began, it's become our "lifeline" for dining out, as we do not do indoor dining as of the time of this writing (March 2021). Outdoor seating is plentiful here, and there are great views from just about every table. Like many establishments, their menus (food and drink) are a bit abbreviated due to current conditions, but most of the best of their choices remain. Probably my favorite is the Sissy's Chicken Sandwich; it's a solid "gourmet" fried chicken breast sandwich that has a wonderful sauce, a soft, fresh bun, and a crispy yet juicy chicken breast. Waffle fries are a great side dish with the sandwich. I've also enjoyed the buffalo fried shrimp a number of times; it's good as a shared appetizer or a small main dish if you're not super hungry. Turkey meatloaf is moist and delicious, with a good crust, but I'll be honest, you won't be fooled into thinking it's anything other than turkey. If that's OK with you, go for it, it's tasty. On the cocktail side, the list is brief, but there are some favorites that I keep returning to. The Yard Smash and Perl Frose are probably my most frequent orders, but I also adore the Peach & Ginger Fizz. They have a full bar, and a small selection of craft beers including some rotators, so ask your server if you want to go that way. The staff are always super friendly and efficient, and during the pandemic, they're diligent about mask wearing and other precautions. The food was fairly good, unfortunately the service was less than subpar. The waitress i had didn't take our drinks until about 20 minutes after we sat down, and then some of subordinates orders weren't taken. When he finally got his food, he got an allergic reaction. Our waitress told someone else at our table to be quiet when someone was taking our order. There was also very little parking and had to walk at least a block. I can tell that this place is INCREDIBLE when we're not in lockdown. The patio area and play area alone make for a great family night. I love the outdoor feel, the outdoor TV's and the activities available. My buddy and I decided to take our sons out to dinner after playing in the park for a little bit, and The Yard was the place of choice. The parking is not great on crowded nights, but with a little work, you can eventually find a spot to park and maybe walk a little. As I mentioned, the whole outdoor scene is pretty cool and they are able to keep families social distanced pretty easily. We are seated inside and have a view of a TV so we can see the football game. Rather than menus, they give you a code to scan so you can pull the menu up on your phone. I think this is due to COVID and menus not being used for safety reasons. I thought this was a smart and crafty way to provide menus. I wasn't in the mood for anything too heavy, so I ordered the McKinney Cobb Salad with chicken added. My son ordered "Ma's Fried Chicken Tenders". It didn't take too long for the food to arrive, and the food was pretty good. Since I ordered a salad, I don't really have much to rant about, and my sons chicken tenders were just OK, but I mean, how can you fail at chicken fingers. In the big picture, I imagine this place has a few niche items that are delicious, but the outdoor area and activities are the main selling point. I don't see myself craving any food items so bad I MUST come here, but I could easily see myself coming here once a week and meeting friends to hang out. I would call the menu at the Yard an "advanced" bar menu and know for certain they have great drinks. Next time I come here I will try the signature cocktail "The Church Street Old Fashioned - 33RG Whistlepig Rye". The place is clean, and the people that work here seem to be nice and polite. I think the environment is just as open to families as it is to friends hanging out to chill out and watch the game. COVID has taken a lot of things away we take for granted, this place is one of them, and I look forward to coming back POST COVID and enjoying outside again. read more

Lots of outdoor options, which we were at first not stoked about with it being a beautiful 97 degree day, but all the fans were amazing and honestly we were quite content outside! When The Yard first came out, we considered it a five out of five star restaurant for what they were marketed as. We took everyone there, friends and out of town guests. Over the last several years the yard has removed all games and added more tables. The Yard has also changed and reduced its menu, which has resulted in what feels like lesser quality food. As much as I want to love the yard, each time we revisit we ask ourselves why didn't we just go to the stix in McKinney. To sum it up, the yard still has a dog park but has removed all entertainment for people, and has reduced the menu to typical bar fare. I would like to warn you that my hubby and I are not in the season of life that would enjoy this place. We came in last Saturday with our teenage boys. They were on a one hour wait. We are used to these wait times. Immediately they wanted to leave because of all the children running around. When we walked in there were about 12 kids playing ping pong without a parent in sight. Right away they begged for Square Burger. So, we didn't wait for a table. My husband and I returned on Sunday after church without our sons. I would like to state this is not a date spot. There are many unaccompanied children running around. I guess if you bring a date it's great birth control. If you are a young family this in the place for you! There is ample fun actives for kids from ping pong to a children's play area. Although, I do suggest being attentive to small children. The table next to us had a toddler that was throwing her shoes at the waitresses that would walk by. I have been Facebook stalking this place and anxiously awaiting for it to open! I would get a little giddy each time they would post about their progression. Maybe I built it up in my mind, but I was a little disappointed in the food. I had the Dal Mar Surf tacos. Being that it was blackened shrimp, it was very bland. The shrimp were also microscopic. This is tiny shrimp such as from a "shrimp salad". It was also super weird that it was served with fries. I didn't see fries mentioned on the menu, but the two didn't compliment each other. My thought was that children enjoy everything with fries, so that's why they came with my entree. The hubby had the chicken fried steak. This is a $21 chicken fried steak that we would have happily paid for had it been worth the price. The steak was tough and the potatoes were extremely bland. I'm talking no salt or pepper on the mashed potatoes. I figured they keep the food bland to cater to children's taste. That is the only reason I could come up with why the food was under seasoned. So, why did I give it 4 stars if the food was so, so! Our waitress was amazing and really enthusiastic. She really was excited about the menu and telling us about it. The atmosphere was amazing! My sister and I had two little kids with us, and we were initially concerned about the hour wait time. However, the "waiting area" was outside and spacious so the kids were content just hanging out (one of two kiddos was a toddler- so keeping him content was magic). We had taken time to view the menu while we waited. So as soon as our waiter came, we placed our order and the food came fairly quickly. I ordered the Big Summer Grain Bowl and added the salmon. The salad was NOT drenched in salad dressing and I was able to taste all the flavors of the salad!! Apparently the Fries were really good - my nephew asked if he could order more - we did just that.
