Freakin Love this place. Just yesterday morning I walk by after a number of days in town. The fellow that met me, I told him that I just wanted to take a look. He gives me a sample of their tomato bisque, the soup of the day. Whoa!, that was really good! Really great food. The veggie burger and the chicken on the ranch sandwiches are delicious. Many times in the middle of the night I've had my late-night cravings satisfied with a banana bread and a cup of tea. The interior design that makes it look like a humble wooden village in a deep fairy forest is a fantastic and beautiful front for a religious organization that encourages its members to cut ties with their families and beats their - oop, I mean, DISCIPLINES their children in the name of God. The charming deco and cheery old-timey folk music really massage my mind so I can forget about the fact that nearly every account I've read by an ex-member of the Twelve Tribes is one of misery. My Yellow Submarine sandwich was decent, however they put an excessive amount of spread on it which unfortunately overwhelmed the flavor of everything else. This has to be the strangest restaurant that I have ever walked into. From the decor, food, to the people that work here. The food was not good. The man that seated us was not friendly. The nice but peculiar lady took our order. The energy in this place felt off to me from the minute I walked in and even mentioned to my husband that it was strange. This place is amazing. The restaurant itself is something out of a fantasy novel, with wood tables and benches, little caves with booths in them, cool lights everywhere. The food is also amazing. Such a cute restaurant with THE MOST AMAZING SANDWICHES IN THE WORLD! I used to get the chicken on the ranch but they improved the sandwich and it is now called the country ranch and it's to die for! I love this place! Open 24 hours on select days it is the perfect midnight snack option! With it's warm lit sign on the exterior and hobbit like interior it certainly creates a warm and cozy atmosphere for chilling away from the homestead. The Yellow Deli is by far my favorite place to go for a late night meal. Not only their food (and drinks!) are sensational, the atmosphere is amazingly chill and relaxing. For a weekday lunch downtown I wanted to find someplace affordable, quick and relaxing. Not only did The Yellow Deli fit the bill, it also had the right amount of quirkiness to make lunch a pretty cool experience as well! To top if off, the food was phenomenal. I ordered the spring chicken sandwich and "extra" ginger brew while my fiance got the reuben sandwich and chips with a root beer. The Yellow Deli makes its own breads and rolls. The ingredients are fresh. Some things are healthy and some things are heart-stoppingly decadent (Lambwich..... lamb, egg, cheese, sauce on homemade Kaiser roll.....yuuuuuuum, but my cholesterol levels go up just looking at it!) They specialize in Mate teas. The servers are chill and super accommodating. Want separate checks for everyone at the table? No problem? Need something made a certain way? No problem. Decor/ambiance. Give this place five stars for being funky. Low light, carved wood tables, murals, macrame hangings. There is no place like it in Boulder. Plus, outside of being closed for their Sabbath (Friday afternoon to Sunday noon), this place is open 24 hours! I word about the religion thing..... I don't know why folks get so bent out of shape about the fact that the folks who run the Yellow Deli are part of a Christian commune. The Nepalese restaurant I go to has statues of Genesh in the entry and paintings of Krishna all over the walls. The Pho restaurant I go to has statues of the Virgin Mary everywhere. Are we so fragile that we are threatened by other people's belief systems? I've never felt like the Yellow Deli folks have pushed religion on me in any way. When I heard that this place was run by religious dudes with matching beards, I had to try it. I was missing one of my favorite bars: Bloodhound in SF, with all the beardy men and flannels. I had a veggie burger, which came piled high with sprouts, a ton of avocado, the chewy delicious fresh bread, and some sort of thin sliced onion spread on the bottom. I chose lentil soup as my side; it was more like minestrone with lentils instead of pasta, and it was delicious. The bf got some sandwich with many meats, and he wolfed it down. I believe he said that discovering this place was "dangerous" meaning he could eat many sandwiches. I decided to have dessert, since I was impressed and wanted to sample more things on the menu. We got the date bar, which had a cobbler sort of outside, and date spread on the inside. I've been thinking a lot about what I ate there, and how many other delicious things I want to try, so that's a good sign. When our bearded waiter came to take our money, he was carrying a baby, so that was pretty cute. This will probably become a regular lunch spot. For those of us that work downtown, in the service industry, we need variety, and I'm glad the Deli came to town. read more

Feels like you've at a café in the Shire, but with murals of smiling workers in agricultural settings.... Staff here are SERIOUSLY friendly, and it always smells like home-made soup on the sidewalk out front. I had the best waffle of my life, the syrup was made by reducing berries down to a hot beautiful mess. It was incredible. My husband got the egg sandwich - egg and cheese on egg bread. Don't order that. Feel like this restaurant is very Boulder.. Everything is as local and organic as possible, and they will offer you like 14 varieties of Yerba Mate. It has a really cozy feeling, open ALL the time, like maybe 24 hrs a day but closed on Saturday for the "Sabbath". This restaurant may be run by a cult....it's hard to say.Worth noting that these very kind people would take care of any weary traveler. Awesome sandwhich shop. Really neat, smoky mountain feel to the interior design. Bluegrass music playing. The prices are average+ as the sandwhiches are around $8 and the salads are a little less. Pretty standard but the food was really good. I got the deli lamb sandwhich and my girlfriend got the cranberry cashew salad and we both loved it. The people were a little amish/hippie-esque but it wasn't anything obnoxious. Wish they had more outdoor seating. The Yellow Deli might be a little off-putting to some because of its soothing instrumental music and cult origins, but once you settle in with a hot cup of tea and one of their fantastic sandwiches you'll feel like you never want to leave--and why would you, since you can get a bottomless cup of mate for a few bucks and free wifi?? Really nice people. I love the atmosphere: padded wooden seats and benches that are like little nooks. They also have a "bar" where you can eat or drink non-alcoholic drinks. Apple cider was great. They have some kind of hibiscus drink that is really good too. The flatiron burger is vegan. They do have some kind of religious thing going on, but if that's what makes them put love into their food and atmosphere...I really like it. They will not try to convert you, or even mention anything of the sort. They might make you feel like you've stumbled into some kind of lovely, peacuful family picnic with delicious homemade food. Let me start off by saying that Yellow Deli has some of the best sandwiches ever. The Deli Rose sandwich is easily one of the top 3 sandwiches I've had my entire life. Now the reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is because the food took quite a long time to come out considering they were just sandwiches. That being said, everything was delicious. I went to yellow deli for lunch, and immediately found that their menu was not allergy friendly. Nearly their entire menu had items with either wheat, dairy or nuts. Only their basic salad and one smoothie had no allergy ingredients. I found the hostess an older hippy lady to be oddly friendly, as she sat next to me lazily on the bench and tried to accommodate our allergies while in the same breath telling us in the future they won't be able to adjust their menu. It just annoys me when a place only includes an allergy side without options, and then the pretentious hippies don't even offer proper health food, but yet think they are so enlightened. read more

I got a kick out of my first Yellow Deli experience. The place has a completely unusual feel inside, almost like you're in a tropical forest restaurant. One of my most memorable times going to the Yellow Deli was after Barack Obama won the 2012 election. We had been at my friends house, a place near enough to Boulder High that I could sleep over and walk to school early the next morning. I was still 17, and the idea of drinking on a school night and staying up past midnight still gave me a bubbly feeling of rebelliousness within my stomach. This was a group of old and new friends combined, the old ones walking up to the precipice with me, and the new ones had gone to the edges of their own teenage wasteland, and had decided to take two steps back to spend time in the middle space, watching states go blue with a mug full of rum and coke, lounging on the squishy brown couch. Our euphoria, filled with things we were only just beginning to understand, concepts like the future and where we sat within it, launched us into a pure, naive joy when we saw the shorter red bar next to the tower of blue. The Canadian school I had considered applying to disappeared from my mind. Too tipsy to risk driving, full of buzzing energy, we walked the seven chilly blocks along the pearl street to the only place we knew would be open at the time, The Yellow Deli. people honked at us from the street, yelling "OBAMA!!" and "Amendment 64!", and we cheered back, feeling the newfound bravado that the age of 17 brought. Walking into the Yellow Deli, as always, you feel encased in a strange bubble of peace. It almost feels like a movie set, with it's strange soft flute music, golden lighting, and everything made out of hand carved wood. Our moods now slightly hushed, as the Yellow Deli always seemed to make a mood, we crouched into a booth, only four of us who were left of our larger group, two sets of best friends on different sides of a divide. As the waiter poured our water, my friend giddily said that this might have been the first time a president had taken a pro-gay stance in his acceptance speech, and how bright the future looked for him to soon be able to marry in any state. The conversation fluctuating from then, us talking about the satisfaction of Romney losing, the prospects about the future with each of our college paths, and the food in front of us.
