Roasted pork plate and a pound of roasted pork

First time here and have nothing bad to say about my experience. Food was amazing, Vietnamese coffee was strong (as it should be) and the staff was very nice. We went around lunch time on a Sunday and it was packed. The foot traffic was consistent the whole time we were there. Noticed a lot of take out orders coming out of the place. Suggested if you are coming here to not be surprised about how busy it is. It's worth the wait!

The more I spend time exploring Tacoma, the more I am loving it! Take this winner of a well-run family-owned restaurant in the Lincoln District of Tacoma. It looks unassuming on the outside, but it is all heart on the inside. You can tell this restaurant has been well-loved in this neighborhood for years-- 28 years in fact! I dug the community vibes and organized hustle and bustle atmosphere. We sat at the counter because it was a full house with many more customers waiting in line to get a table. I'm so glad we sat at the counter-- best seats in the house IMO because we got to chat with the friendly staff and get a close-up view of some entertaining behind the scenes action. I highly recommend the Combo Plate ("Cơm Thập Cẩm" that's comprised of roast duck, roasted pork, and BBQ pork over steamed rice with pickled veggies and their house sauce). Ohmygosh, what a treat!!! Everything tasted so good and the service was welcoming and efficient. It was a lot of food so I took about half of it to go. Including a stuffed sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf that was in a pile next to me and looked too irresistible for me not to take at least one home. This restaurant is a new favorite of mine in Tacoma. They informed me that a more fancy-looking and modern one is located in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle. I plan to check it out one day. Hopefully, it'll be just as great as this OG one.

Ambiance: This is a little confusing shop. It has hanging meat in its window like a classic Chinatown take out restaurant but it's run by a Vietnamese family and has a Vietnamese-themed mural on the wall. They play electro dance music and the TV just cycles between short clips of cities like Rio de Janiero. Nothing is particularly cohesive but service is very friendly and they show up where it counts, the food. Food: I'm an American born Chinese kid from California and the food here could go head to head with anything in San Diego or LA. The broth is clean and simple Chinese style soup, not too salty and perfectly reduced. They load the bowls with tons of protein and are very flexible with whatever combination of proteins you want. The cha sui is perfect with just the right amount of sweet glaze and a touch of char to keep it interesting. The roast pork has one of the crispiest skins I've had which you can just let soak in the broth to your desired consistency. The duck is moist, tender, and relatively meaty (sometimes restaurants source scrawny ducks which are mostly bone). The weakest part of dish is the which have that store-bought taste and could be fresher and slightly more al dente. Overall this some of the best Chinese BBQ I've had, as good as any major city I've been. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area!

Tho Thuong BBQ is SO good!! I genuinely love everything they have. It's a small, cozy spot and it definitely gets busy, but honestly it's 100% worth the wait. The food comes out flavorful, fresh, and just hits every time. You can tell they put a lot of care into what they serve. The atmosphere feels lively because of how packed it gets, which kind of adds to the experience. Even when there's a wait, it moves pretty fast and once you're seated, it's all worth it. If you're thinking about going, just go and be prepared to wait a little, but trust me, you won't regret it.

Amazing Asian bbq place ran by a family. My bf got two different plates to go and their portions are massive. Their pickled veggies cut through the meats well. Duck: 8/10 not too much meat on them. I'm not sure if it's a because it's viet bbq but I'm used to the duck being a dark amber color, theirs was more orange but nevertheless the flavor was still good Char siu bbq pork: 10/10 flavorful, can never go wrong with this one. If I were to order from this place I would go for this again and maybe try the roast pork

The food was delicious and the pickled vegetables and peppers balanced the richness of the bbq pork and duck. I give the skin for crispiness!!!

Great Vietnamese bbq! Duck was flavorful, roast pork was crisp and juicy. They chop the meat right as you order and the food comes out hot. I've had both the combo rice plate and the combo soup. I also enjoy the pickled veggies to cut through the rich meat. The prices have gone up but what establishment hasn't? The interior was revamped in the last year or two which is refreshing. Not in the best location but worth the drive!

This type of Vietnamese cuisine is my favoriteeee!! Their proteins are delicious and the portions are great. I love the combo rice box which is all of their meats: BBQ Pork, Crispy Pork Belly, and Duck. The broken rice is amazing & so is the sweet soy sauce that pairs with everything. Separate lines for dine in & take out which is nice too! Love this place!!

This is one of my favorite roasted duck spots, and every time I'm in WA, I try to make the trek to Tacoma for their duck noodle soup. They make phenomenal BBQ pork as well, and the roast pork is equally popular -- but I come for the duck. We stopped in for a quick breakfast and ordered our usual: duck noodle soup and the two-item combo with BBQ pork and roast pork over rice. That first sip of broth was exactly as I remembered - clean, deeply savory, and comforting. It didn't need a single condiment. We did notice the portions of the BBQ pork and roast pork have decreased slightly since our last visit. However, the flavor remains outstanding - tender, well-roasted, and incredibly satisfying. We were greeted and seated quickly. Food arrived moments after ordering. The restaurant filled up by the time we finished our meals. Before leaving, we picked up two pounds of BBQ pork to share with family and friends. It's just that good. This remains a must-stop whenever I'm in Washington.

The best place for bbq in Tacoma!! I have been wanting to come here for a very long time and this place did not disappoint at all. Might be because I'm Vietnamese but I felt so welcomed there. I didn't even tell them but they knew haha. All the staff were super friendly in the Vietnamese hospitality kind of way. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the meats here. The plates are also a good price considering the amount of food you get. The plate comes with a soup that is light yet flavorful - reminds me of the soup that my mom made growing up. It also comes with pickled veggies, cucumber, rice, and the dipping sauce. The picked mustard greens were my favorite! I could eat so much of that. The meat was definitely the star of the show. All of the meat was meaty and kind of fatty at the same time, not dry at all. Full of flavor. The pork belly and duck sin was crispy. Everything I could ever want from Vietnamese bbq meat. The sauce that came with the meal elevated the meat. Closes at 3pm every day, and sometimes they do sell out of meat earlier than that, so make sure to come early and try! Worth it for me. I definitely will buy some meat and bring it home.

Street parking, always great service and delicious food. Can't get enough of the roasted pork and duck. Broth is flavorful. Good portions. We frequent at least once a week. Rice plates are good if you don't feel like broth and noodles.

Came here to try some noods. I had the duck noodle soup that was dry and soup on the side. The flavor of the duck was so good and a lot of different flavors. The noodles were cooked perfectly. I couldnt stop eating the onion and sour mustard greens and wish they had more, but thats just being greedy lol The service was great and attentive. I will definitely be back to try more!

Saturday visit around 1pm. Restaurant was busy! All tables were occupied and there was a line for both to-go and dine in. We opted to dine in, and the line really wasn't that long of a wait! I'd say 10-15min wait and we were sat. Our server was very prompt and straight to the point, took our order in like 20 seconds! It was loud in the restaurant, but it's tiny, and cramped full of people and the lil old man chop chopping the meats in the window. Anyways, I ordered the Combo rice plate, it had roast duck, roast pork and bbq pork as far as meats, and includes rice, pickled jalapeños, pickled veggies, cucumbers and a side of soup broth. My mansy pants ordered the Combo noodle soup. Which, after receiving both orders, I wish I ordered instead! Soup on a cold autumn day just would've been a better choice. Not that I was disappointed in my meal, I just wanted my bf's soup after seeing it! We both really liked our meals, meats were crispy and moist. Not dry at all! Also as far as beverages, I ordered the Iced Vietnamese Coffee (wow! So good) and a Coca Cola in a can. Can't go wrong with either. If ever we are in Tacoma and craving, we will definitely come by. read more

I just recently moved back to Washington and in the Tacoma area and I am not surprised at how busy and popular this place has got. It definitely has picked up some traction throughout the years. The food is still amazing! Great quality and good portion sizes. Still family owned and the service is great! Just please be patience with the amount of business it is getting on some days as there can be a line out the door. When I first went here it was definitely different and has received an upgrade in the inside. There is a few seating spots which is great, but mainly folks take it to go. Coffee and desserts are great too! Definitely one of the best spots for duck, roast pork and bbq pork. read more

I have been a customer since 1998. I have introduced that wonderful place to friends I knew would enjoy it and they do! I have nothing but honor and praise to heap upon the gorgeous and kind owner who kept the operation going in the midst of having to face his dear, beautiful wife's death. He kept going, kept raising their child and the word of how extraordinary good their food was finally reached our neighbor to the north and it's been hell trying to find a table since! I'm really glad the what looks like THE WORLD has beat a path to their doors. The time and effort and love and sweat and determination it took to build this dream has been realized! I just wish KING 5 hadn't told the world because now it's even more difficult to get a seat right away. But the wait is never long and there is take-out. But if you have the time, sit and people watch and eat the pieces of heaven at your table or take it out. No, I'm not a family member. It's just one of my favorite babies! read more

This restaurant is so good, they're normally sold out of pork before noon. So GO EARLY, especially if you're going on a weekend. If you get lucky they'll still have some duck until around 1. Service is amazing, everyone is so sweet and efficient. Not a lot of seating, so if the dine in line is long just take it to go. You can eat it at home (if you can wait that long) and it hits just the same. 10/10 read more

Food is amazing! Probably the best bbq pork I've ever had. The portions are great and I love the pickled vegetables they provide on the side. Some improvements can be made on the take out service as they passed the phone to three people to get my order taken...not the most efficient system. Went here to grab some Chinese bbq for take out. Yes it's a Vietnamese restaurant but they specialize in bbq pork, roasted pork, and roast duck. All three options can be ordered individually or with rice or with egg noodles. Their bbq pork and roasted pork are legit. The bbq pork has the perfect amount of sweetness and isn't dry. The roasted pork is well seasoned and the skin is nice and crispy. The duck was a bit dry and needed to be dipped in the side of brown juice or plum sauce that came with it. With that said it is the best option in the Tacoma area and I will definitely be returning for pork the next time I'm in town. read more

I called in so I can just take out, but when I got there, there no separate line for orders placed by phone. I had to wait 12-15 minutes while 4 customers ordered at the counter, waited to receive their food,receive their food, and then I ordered and got mine. There was only 1 guy chopping up the meat while the lady rang us up and packaged the order in a plastic bag. Food was pretty good, though it would be great if there was a second line for people who called their orders in. read more

Great food that lived up to its reputation for both the ducks and pork. However, the service was subpar. As it got busier, it got a bit wild with ordering to-go orders and the wait was long to pay your own sit-down bill. While eating, delivery of whole uncooked pigs were carried in over the shoulder one by one right by our table. It could be considered unsanitary for folks while eating their food or disturbing seeing a dead pig staring lifeless at you, but I find it to be an amazing, genuinely experience. I saw a table that was making faces and thought I should bring up that it could have a concern. Would stop by again if ever in the area. read more

If they state that they sell their meats by the pound, I expect that it will weigh 16 oz. if I put it on a scale. That was not the case with the two trips I've made here. Food is good, but I've weighed each of the meats alone on a food scale as it looked like I had received less roast pork than the BBQ pork. Without the styrofoam container, without the sauce they include, it ends up being 14ish-15ish oz. And sure enough, I did indeed receive less of the roast pork. It's not off by too much, but again, if they state they sell their meats by the pound, each customer should be getting the amount they pay for. I spoke to someone over the phone to let them know that I wasn't happy about this and that it isn't fair to customers if they aren't getting the full portion they paid for. All they said was "okay, thank you." Zero ownership. I treat it as if I'm buying produce, meat, poultry, whatever it may be by weight. It shouldn't be any different. read more

Went here for lunch with a friend and got a lunchbox with roast pork and BBQ pork. It was absolutely delicious, so good that we got to-go orders for our families before we went home. The roast pork had perfectly crisp skin and tender meat, and the pickled side veggies complimented everything perfectly. There are only about 4 or 5 tables if you want to eat in and they were steadily busy with take out orders while we were there. I plan on eating the menu at this place! read more

Definitely not worth If you're only getting 3 pieces of bony duck cuts. Super busy for the location and space available but they get the food out fast. read more

I love to get their lunch special. I usually get the roasted pork with picked veggies over white rice. Their bbq duck tastes good but has a feathery smell to it, so that kind of grossed me out. read more

For the longest time this place take only cash. Just recently they finally took the credit card or debit card. Their peking duck is the best in town. Better than than Hong Kong' supermarket or 99 ranch!!! This is my go to for Asian BBQ. read more

The food is good, but I think the service needs to improve. If you come for dining in , it will be fast. However , it will take really long for taking out orders . The group came after me was dine in and got serve right away. And after they done eating , I am was still waiting in the line. And one thing I got more upset than that was the lady at check out . She said sorry to the white man in front of me and said she will put extra meat for him , but my turn she just ask what you want to order and that was all . I was even also waited 50mins in line . The reason I give a bad review because I hope all of people will be treated right . read more

Thought I'd try Tho Tuong after hearing good things. Super friendly staff. I took my order to-go, but the place looked very clean. The veggies and sauce were so good. The pork had a bit of char, which was nice. The portions were generous and I have more than enough for two meals. I'll be back! read more

Service is always super quick and very personable. And the food is SO delicious and unlike what you find in other Vietnamese restaurants around Tacoma. I wish I hadn't taken so long to find this spot. We have been twice already since we came across it looking for duck soup near us. There are 4 tables (4 tops) and some bar/counter seats if you want to dine in. Weekends are busy and bustling with the sound of duck being chopped up in the background. Highly recommend. read more

Simply a perfect lunch. You know it's going to be good when the location is somewhere you don't go after sundown. You know it's going to be good when the menu is barely visible from a few feet away. And you know it's going to be good when you can see them chopping fresh veggies and meat right in front of your face. Simply a perfect lunch. The staff is friendly and will chit chat and make sure you're happy. The duck is crispy while tender and juicy. The vegetable on the side are crunchy and cooked fresh and the rice is adorned with a nice oniony liquid. I can't cuss on Yelp reviews so I'll just say it's delicious. read more

Don't let the area dissuade you from eating here. With a small selection of food variety won't be a problem. Main course of choice are the BBQ options. They have, BBQ Duck, Pork, And chicken. Best duck and crisp pork in the area. Major issue I have with them is they sell out EARLY in day and frequently close by 1 or 2pm and hardly ever answer the phone. I was convicted that they had closed for permanently as the restaurant was barred up every time I stopped by and the phone call would not connect whenever I called. I was pleased today to get a answer when I called, so they, indeed, are still in business. My problem is that they are about 1 hour drive away and with them not answering the phone most of the time I can't risk them being sold out or closed if I drive there. read more

We have only tried the rice combo dish and we really enjoy the roasted pork unless we get the fatty cuts which is not good. The meat is seasoned well and the skin is always crispy. This time we didn't get the pickled jalapeños which was a bummer and the mustard greens were not pickled as well but the other times that we do get it made well we thoroughly enjoy it with the sauce (think it's made from the drippings? Which is chef's kiss). Makes me miss Cali food atmosphere even more. read more

I went with friends and it was so nice. A good place for laughing and eating and hanging out. Food came out fast and all the employees seemed very sweet, a waitress brought us extra bowls when she saw us struggling to try sharing from one bowl of noodles. My family has driven past Cooks Tavern so many times and each time I've made a matter of factly…read moreremark that we should try it in the near future. After what I believe to have been 2 years of saying that, that day has finally come. First, parking near the restaurant was limited, however finding parking in the residential area was fine. We found parking about 2 minutes away from the restaurant. As we came with my best friend, who, by the way, was the reason why I finally stepped foot here, wait time wasn't long as she came about 5 minutes earlier than I. We came for brunch and it was busy but the wait was not bad at all. The both of us ordered the same items on the menu from both the drinks, the main and dessert - a sangria, Shakshuka with lamb, and beignets. We also brought our daughters with us. They ordered a cheeseburger with a side of caesar salad and a mac n cheese dish from the kids menu. Our orders were delicious, although I was expecting the shakshuka dish to be heftier. For the price - $17. xx with an additional $4 to add lamb - it was a little disappointing, to be honest, especially since it was lacking in the lamb department. I was still hungry but thankfully I had my 4 year old's leftover cheeseburger and salad to fill me right up. As for the beignets, it was good. I don't have anything to compare it to since I don't know what an actual beignet tastes like. Would I return? Sure.

I didn't love the fish and chips - the inside cod was fine but the exterior was fried too hard and too crispy - I prefer lightly battered. I also wasn't as huge a fan of the chowder despite all the rave reviews. I did enjoy the free sourdough bread to start though. Service was friendly and attentive. They have outdoor seating which is also a nice plus with beautiful views of the water (just might be a little windy).

I recently ate at Tho Tuong BBQ and everything was fantastic. I ordered the combination rice platter, which was packed with flavor and generously portioned -- every bite was satisfying. I also got the Vietnamese iced coffee, which was already really good on its own, but when they added a little extra coconut milk for us... wow. It took it to another level -- richer, smoother, and honestly addictive. To top it off, we had the chè thái, and it was amazing. Super refreshing, perfectly balanced, and a great way to end the meal. On top of all that, the staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, making the whole experience even better. If you're in Tacoma, this spot is 100% worth checking out. Tho Tuong BBQ is a true hole-in-the-wall gem! Food: We ordered the combination noodles with roasted duck, crispy pork, and BBQ pork. It also came with bok choy, leeks, green onions, and crispy onions. The crispy pork was my favorite-- perfectly crunchy and flavorful. Service: We were greeted right away and seated quickly. The staff speaks minimal English, but ordering was easy by pointing at the menu. Food came out fast! Ambiance: The restaurant is busy, with a line on the left for takeout. There are about eight tables and bar-top seating. Overall, the space is clean and has a modern feel. I'll definitely be back for more! :) read more

My friend and I were looking for a quick bite, and this place did not disappoint! It's a small restaurant, but the food came quick and the noodles were cooked perfectly. The portions were big, and our noodle bowls both had a generous amount of the variety of meats, which were amazing! The duck was nice and juicy, the crispy pork belly still had a crunch, and the char siu pork had delicious flavor. I'd definitely come back. read more

I crave it weekly. Can't get enough of it! I always get the 3 combo meat. Only thing is, once they run out of meat they close (which is all the time). I would go around 10am-1pm. read more
