My friend and I came here for brunch the other day and almost turned around when we saw the line; however, I'm glad we waited! The line moved pretty fast, as servers would come out and announce when tables of certain sizes were made available. We both ordered the "Alex's Crazy Twos" which was amazing. It came with so much food for just $10.75. Although it was written on the menu that more time was needed for this dish, due to the amount of food, it did not take long to come out of the kitchen at all. This was most likely due to the high volume of food leaving the kitchen at any given time. Service was good, the waitress was pretty attentive (as attentive as she could be, with a full house). All in all, I'd definitely return and eat there again. I'd probably end up getting the same order as well, but maybe this time I'll actually finish it ;) read more

I love eggs over easy. Nothing fancy... just good fresh eggs, good coffee and good toast. Unfortunately, most breakfast places want to serve massive omelettes, eggs Benedict etc. Here they have straight forward eggs. I had to wait a few minutes on a Sunday morning, so it's good to get here early if you don't want to wait. The potatoes were on the greasy side... and I prefer crispy hash browns if I'm going to indulge in the calories. The toast was good, but came buttered, which is not my preference. I was in Boston for a short trip and Thorton's was around the corner, and with these reviews, why not? It was a Monday morning, not too busy but maybe 9 or 10 tables. Our waitress approached immediately and was very attentive throughout the entire meal. I had a basic breakfast with eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast. I also ordered a single pancake to try out. The potatoes were the best part for me, I'm not sure what they mixed in with it but it was delicious. Everything else was average and the pancakes were below average. Classic American, diner style food, with many of their own unique dishes, in an informal dining area and excellent prices. Madison our server gets an A+, speedy, friendly and regularly checking on us. We had Poached eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast, strawberry crepes and home fries. Quality of the ingredients was excellent!! Although were not fond... of the flavor of the oils used to cook the food, as well as we did not care for the home fry recipe. Well worth the wait. The service is necessarily abrupt as they are extremely efficient. Do not expect niceties or chit chat, but these girls are pros and they have to constantly be flipping. My server was still friendly even though I asked for modification of my breakfast, and everything came out perfect. I had the eggs benedict with salmon and capers and added avocado to it. It was incredible. I also tried the clam chowder. It was only mediocre in my opinion, but the portion size for the amount is far better than anywhere else we've tried so far. We've passed this place quite a bit over the last few years and, on weekends, almost always see a long line. After wanting to try it since moving to Boston, we finally got the chance this past week. Unfortunately, I think one of my hunches about the place may have been right: the long lines are based more on Thornton's location (close proximity to hotels and the Prudential Center) than on the food itself. The food here was not bad, but I wouldn't call it good either. I tried the Morning Delight, which was a strange mixture of both savory (olives, mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil), and sweet ("french toast" that I wouldn't really describe as such -- it was more of a large croissant). I knew from the menu it was a weird combination, but I wanted to try something unique that I thought Thornton's would potentially be able to surprise me on. Unfortunately, they didn't know more than me -- it was just weird. What it lacked in taste, the food made up for in volume and cost: there was a lot of it and it was cheap. I ordered the fruit filled crepes- very tasty and surprisingly filling. My husband ordered the granola yogurt and fruit and enjoyed it. My son ordered the amaretto French toast and found it tasty. Coffee was very good. Service was prompt and courteous. I highly recommend. read more

Since it's located on Huntington Ave right next to the Pru, the prices are a little over-the-top for the amount of food you get if you ask me. I always leave a bit hungry after wolfing down my flat $10 veggie & cheese omelette, though barely touching my mushy home fries. Come to think of it, I guess this isn't such a bad thing. It is beach season, after all. I must admit that Thornton's has strong sentimental value linked to my college experience in Boston. I absolutely love the back room. I've managed to damn near piss my pants without fail on the many occasions I've dined here with friends in order to recap the previous night. Not sure if it's the atmosphere, or if it's the fact that the small room is easily taken over by a party of 6-10. It's just perfect. I'm really proud of this place for accommodating a rather large group of cranky hungover college kids with little to no wait. The waiters here are the shit. They've got great smiles and quick wit. They can spot a hurting college student from a mile away, and WILL break your balls about it. It's all in good fun, and makes the experience 50 times better. Despite the cozy atmosphere, and the option to dine outside during the warmer months, I have one large bone to pick with you, Thornton's. No broccoli? No American cheese? What the F? C'amaaaahhnnn! How is this possible? You serve breakfast all day! These are staples to America's first meal of the day. Slightly unacceptable. I'll probably visit you a few more times before I graduate. I'm sure I'll be pissing my pants with laughter per usual. That, or I'll be face down on the table praying for the puke to stay down. I was visiting the Back Bay area of Boston for the night, and decided to avoid using our hotel's over-priced, under-whelming restaurant. After logging onto yelp, we saw Thorton's popped up as a suggested option,in which is was rated well and close by. Upon arrival at 10am on a Monday, there was a line out the door. It was worth the 10 min wait! My girlfriend ordered very traditional scrambled eggs with a side order of bacon. We were both surprised to see more food arrived then she could finish. Now I'm a huge fan of eggs benedict, and there were soooo many fantastic choices that I couldnt decide. I went on our waitresses' recommendation of the Salmon Benedict, and I'm glad I did. It was so good it made me, literally, hop up and down in my seat! We were pleasently surprised at our experience at this boutique-style breakfast-lunch spot. I've lived in Boston for the past five years and have lived on Huntington Avenue for most of the time, and had kept meaning to check this place out. My partner, best friend and I all went over to it for the first time this past Saturday. From the second we sat down to the moment we left, we received condescending service. I asked for fresh cream for my coffee considering that the one she wanted me to use had been sitting out on the table before we got there and she told me she that she had been watching my cream before I got there. I don't care if she's been watching it or not, but if I ask for fresh cream it shouldn't be a big deal. Our food was cold (and there's only one person to blame when that happens) and mediocre, I expected more for a local place in such a prime location, but next time I'll venture across the street to Cheesecake factory, at least corporate America tries to care about its customers, even if it's just for a good tip. read more

Understandably, today was 9AM on a freezing Valentines' morning, but when we lined up, service didn't ask what size our party was and instead told us to wait -- with no estimated waiting time given. We had a party of six and saw another party of six leaving. Thorntons allowed the incomplete party before us (of four; only one of which was present in line) to slip through the cracks and meander to the large table themselves -- and still, we hadn't been asked our party size. Eventually, we were asked our party size (and, after indicating that two of our party were still parking), they ushered in the group behind us -- without even realizing that the group before us (of four) was also incomplete! Surprisingly affordable despite the area. The service is quick and efficient, and the food is decent and great variety. Seriously, those Cuban eggs are amazing! These awesome eggs in a tomato sauce (tastes canned, but I don't care), onions, and served over rice. Amazingly filling!! I also tried some eggs benedict - not too bad. More subtle hollandaise, average muffin and ham, but nicely poached egg. Also comes with a refreshing piece of fruit! Don't be alarmed by the low star rating! My friends and I always end up at Thorton's for brunch when we don't feel like trekking all the way to Mike's. I've had both lunch and breakfast here and definitely will only order breakfast for now on. I think some of their sandwiches are decent, but I'm pretty sure the fries came from a frozen bag (or at least they did the last time I got them). When I went to Thorton's last Sunday, I ordered the 2 egg breakfast, with fried eggs, home fries, and whole wheat toast. The eggs were great and the home fries were good but a little spicy. We also ordered the hummus appetizer - the hummus was pretty good but the pita it was served with was nothing special. As for the staff, I don't know why but I've never had a friendly waiter/waitress here. Also, our food always takes wayy too long to come out. Still, it's worth the wait when you're sitting outside on a beautiful day. Overall, Thorton's is a decent spot for brunch. read more

I wasn't a big fan. The hollandaise sauce was definitely a bit suspect on the Eggs Benedict - very, very yellow? IDK what I was expecting, at that price point, but it was strange. The restaurant smells strange to me, and there are paper signs taped to the wall in Comic Sans, alerting customers to various policies. "Sorry, we don't have quarters," for example. The menu is very colorful, in a way that makes it tough to read. It's a diner. It gets the job done. A few employees ignored me when I come in ("please wait to be seated", but nobody to greet me?) but my server was nice. She even offered me a free latte that was extra, made in error, I assume. I wasn't really impressed with the food or the atmosphere, though, and wouldn't go back. read more

Bad thing: this place is tiny and I mean SUPER tiny which means longer wait times but who likes waiting for food? When you do manage to get a seat, it has a very cozy diner homey feel. I got the Eggs Gusto: Poached eggs on fried potato halves, filled w/ sauteed spinach, mushroom & bacon, topped with provolone cheese and pesto parmesan sauce, served w/ toast and melon FOR UNDER 10 BUCKS. I've heard a lot of good things about Thornton's, but it just wasn't quite what I thought it would be. I had the Eggs Felix, which was messy and pretty plain in regards to taste, I feel like it really could have used some seasoning of some kind. It wasn't bad overall, but the English Muffin it was on was soaked through, and I could only eat it with a fork and knife. However, I have to agree with Ann W. Stick to the originals here. My two friends got the blueberry pancakes and french toast, which looked much better than what I had, so I'll just have to keep that in mind for next time. Also on a side note: if you're a big OJ person, be prepared to pay for refills - Thornton's is a strict no-free-refill restaurant, at least for breakfast. read more

Went to Thornton's at 11 a.m. this morning with two other friends. As a party of 3 in a semi-full restaurant we were told to 'seat ourselves' anywhere. They have a pretty extensive breakfast menu, and we ordered banana pancakes, a Belgian waffle with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, and eggs with hams and cheese. Relative to the other tables - who arrived after us - it took us a while to get our food. The breakfast was average, Yelp reviews about other diners/restaurants serving breakfast and brunch have received better reviews, and we would have gone other places (Mike's, Grille 705), but opted for Thornton's for proximity's sake. Anyway, to get to the crowning glory of our visit to Thornton's... We were a little forgotten by the time we were waiting for our bill, and once we'd put money down to pay, we were waiting and expecting to get change back. Our waitress eventually swung by, glanced down at the bill and the amount of money we'd put down, and asked if we were all set, and when we were still expecting and trying to get our change back, we were asked if the service wasn't 'okay', and how much we wanted back. It began to seem like bartering, and sparing to cause a scene, we relented. (As I think most diners are accustomed to, the norm would be to give diners their change back, and then let THEM decide, sans pressure, how much tip to give.) So - the service was 'okay' - nothing more, nothing less - but it was definitely not worth the excessive tip we were forced into giving, and the attitude we received at the end. On one of my semi-regular visits to Boston, my wife and I discovered this delightful little spot for breakfast. We were able to get a seat outside on a warm Fourth of July morning. From the line that showed up after we were seated we knew we had found a winner. The staff was courteous and efficient and the menu was wide enough to cover a large spectrum of tastes. Besides all that, the food was very good. Our son lives in Boston and works in Back Bay. We highly recommended Thornton's to him as an alternate to his favorite spot Charlies, which was closed for a two-week vacation break. read more

I always really want to like this place, but every time I go I remember why I don't like the place: the food. The waitstaff is always nice, the food generally comes pretty fast, and I really enjoy the outside seating, but you really need to stick to the basics when it comes to the food. I will say that the eggs and omelets are usually a good choice, but everything else has been pretty awful. I got a side of fruit the last time that was brown and looked like it had been sitting out. My boyfriend got a rueben and fries. The fries were cold and seemed barely cooked and the sandwich was soggy. Service here can be great or terrible, depending on your server & how busy they are. We had breakfast here a few days in a row while visiting Boston. The food was good and much more reasonably priced than the breakfast at the Colonnade, where we were staying. It was only a block from there. It wasn't very busy the first day. Service was great! Next day was busy & we waited in line for about a half hour. While you wait in line, sometimes a server would acknowledge you to let you know that they'll seat you as soon as they can, other times you're just invisible to them. I'm fine waiting, as long as I can at least get a nod or some kind of acknowledgement, but to totally ignore the customers is unacceptable. There was a family seated who waited a long time to see their server & were about to walk out. Their server came out & when the father complained, she said that she could only do one thing at a time & that she wished she could help everyone at once, but she can't. The irony is that the other server working was constantly walking around, tending to her guests & no one had to look for her- a much better way to handle the situation, with great customer service & hustling to get everyone what they needed. The entire menu is available all the time, which is great when you aren't in the mood for breakfast. I had the roasted vegetables with pesto sauce & really enjoyed it. Breakfast dishes were good too- eggs, toast & bacon, waffle topped with fresh fruit, and breakfast sandwiches. Potentially a great experience, but not consistently. read more

Service does take a while, since Thornton's is usually busy no matter what time or day you go, but worth the wait! French toast was light and fluffy with the delicious scent of almonds and vanilla bean. I'd recommend the Amaretto Vanilla french toast for those with a sweet tooth since it is one of the sweeter items on the menu. But paired with a black coffee or cranberry juice, the bitterness of the coffee or cranberry juice will cut through the sweetness, leaving you with a clean palate and a happy stomach. read more

Thornton's is a nice cheaper option for brunch when compared to a lot of other places in the area. It has a slightly diner feel to it. They've got all the basics: a plethora of egg dishes, the standard carbo options (pancakes, french toast, etc), bagels, muffins... Their fresh squeezed orange juice is really good. They have a lunch menu, but I don't think I've ever eaten off of it. It can get really busy and crowded, and can have a little bit of a wait if you come at prime brunch time. The best is in the summer when you can sit outside and people watch on Huntington. The worst is in the winter when the windows get all fogged up and it gets really smoky if the grill gets going.
