Thornton's is more of a breakfast spot, not a lunch location. The breakfast selection is deep and wide. The lunch selections are not as broad. Similarly, the food is better at breakfast than at lunch. Some may argue its not hard to make breakfast. While that's possibly right, it's also not hard to do lunch. Yes, as others point out, the service isn't great. It's closer to good. I have yet to have great service at Thornton's, regardless of the number of people working there. If you want a sit down with eggs, pancakes, etc., with mediocre service, try it. If you want anything else, skip Thornton's and go somewhere else. read more

Thornton's although I went while it was open during construction it was a nice place. Super busy (line was out the door when we showed up) and the decor is that of a typical diner (nothing too fancy.) the waitstaff was nice and helpful but we did feel rushed a bit (sit down and already know what you want lol.) But here's the good stuff the stuff you're reading this for... THE FOOD! Food was pretty good. I have the "Oscar" egg beni with crab cakes. The crab cakes tasted pre-frozen (lost points for that) and they were a lil bland. They did look amazing and u eat with your eyes. Pancakes are big and fluffy (actually HUGE!!!) If you're in Boston, you HAVE to go here. For $8.55 i got eggs benedict "oscar" which was 2 eggs benedicts in hollandaise sauce, 2 "crab cakes"(which were imitation unfortunately), 2 english muffins, home fries, onions and string beans. The orange juice was $2.50 if I recall. The Eggs Benedict with hollandaise were VERY good. It wasn't overcooked and the hollandaise was tasty without being overpowering. The Crab cakes while tasty unfortunately were imitation crab which I am not too crazy about. They were also pretty thin/small. But for the price I didn't expect much. The home fries tasted very good, it had a good amount of heat to it from pepper. It was slightly crispy on the outside while still being pretty soft on the inside. The Orange Juice was VERY fresh and good. I think it was about $2.50 and I always ordered 2. I also got New England Clam Chowder, it was very tasty but I found it to not really have much clam. Depending on when you go depends how busy it will be. It seems to be emptyish around 8am but so busy at 10am that you'll have to wait outside for quite some time. Great spot for a breakfast with the friends or fam. They don't take reservations, you just show up and stand in line - which moves pretty quickly. We were a group of seven and only waited about 35 minutes before being seated. I enjoyed the music choice in the location - Katy Perry is always a good choice. The restaurant has a diner feel and is quite homey. Staff is friendly and made jokes with us too. Very fun. I ordered Alex's Special - 2 eggs, 2 sausage (I replaced with extra bacon), 2 bacon, 2 pancakes (I replaced with French toast and strawberries), 2 toast, and potatoes. All for $13. What a deal! Out of all the places I ate at on my trip to Boston, Thorntons was the best. Location is great. Was nice to sit outside. Staff is very friendly and you can choose your seat outside. They are quick when making the food and helping you. We ordered and didn't wait long at all for our food to come and we ordered a lot. The food was very tasty. I'm very picky when it comes to challah French toast since I grew up with it. The French toast was perfect. The price is fair. I'm sure it would be more expensive elsewhere. One of my favorite brunch spots! My go to meal is the strawberry and blueberry pancake as well as the 2 sunny side eggs, home fries, and toast! I love their casual brunch menu and their lunch menu is absolutely delicious!!! I also tried their chicken pita from the lunch menu, and it was good but hard to eat because it was one half of a whole pita with lots of chicken!! Definitely recommend trying this spot! read more

I think the fact that Phil Collins was playing over the radio while I ate here was somewhat foretelling. I have been waiting for this all my life. To write a scathing review of a restaurant establishment so bad, it shouldn't even be given the courtesy of a 1-star review. I did have a whole novella prepared for this review, but as I have continued to read original posts, I don't think attempting to repeat what's already been said will bring anything new to this poor excuse for a restaurant. Let me say that everything bad about this establishment is 100% accurate. The food is lackluster to say the least and in my experience completely outside the realm of reality. When you order Challah French Toast you never imagine that it would arrive to your table fried. But there it was. Fried. This has to be a first in the history of breakfast, fried challah. It also must've have been sitting under the heat lamp too long as well because it had become spongy. Visualize that for a moment. Spongy, fried french toast. Moving along to the Amaretto French toast my colleague ordered. That wasn't fried but it must've been dipped in no batter but instead had a gallon of powdered sugar dumped on top of it. These are not the makings of a decent or even acceptable restaurant, ladies and gentlemen. The wait staff was passive aggressive and dismissive of...everything. Asking to be reseated because it's cold in your area? Go to hell, it's warmer down there. Want some extra napkins? Use your shirt collar. Well, it wasn't quite that bad, but it wasn't that far off. Let me finish this up with the overhead music blasting in our ears. This to me was the real seller for why never to come back here. 90's and aughts top 40 billboard pop music being played at an uncomfortably loud volume. Nothing quite like trying to eat soggy fried French toast while having Beyoncé scream at you "if you liked it you should've put a ring on it", as well as several other artists who I would've turned the radio off for. The entire experience left me hungry for a different breakfast spot. It left me at 9am wishing I hadn't gotten up this morning. Came here last Sunday around noon. There was a line outside of the door, but the wait was probably only around 20 minutes. I ordered an eggs Benedict and it was SO GOOD. loved it. Will be coming back for sure. update (1.5 years later): I am actually a regular here now. Anytime that I want cheap brunch nearby Back Bay area, I head straight here! Honestly the prices are unbeatable. There WILL almost always be a line but they are fairly good about getting people in/out quickly. Expect about a 10-20 minute wait on average I'd say. Just a block away form our hotel was this hopping breakfast spot. You know you are in the city when your tables are 5 inches away from each other. They did have outside seating but it was a bit brisk out. The prices were reasonable when we checked out the menu so we divided to try it. Not much to expect and pretty generic food. I had ordered the eggs Benedict which is a fav and the hollandaise sauce was a bit watered down. The dish seemed a little dry. I really enjoyed the potatoes but they do a have a kick to them. The other dish we ordered was a breakfast burger which is really a glorified sausage biscuit. That was flavorful. They were pretty busy but our server was on point and food came out fast. It was so huge and big that I have to bring half of it home. It's not a very fancy place but very casual right on Huntington Ave. Very popular and busy place. I do recommend it. When I arrive however the service was a little slow because there was nobody there to greet me but I went up to the counter and they said sit anywhere and that was totally fine. A hidden gem in the heart of Prudential. They close at 4PM! But services breakfast all day. There are so many options of food to choose from! One page of the menu is breakfast. They have sandwiches and salads. The prices are the best part. They are relatively cheap for the portions and it's not just specific items. Many items are super cheap. OK, so I am an oatmeal fan. So that's what I'm going to write about. I can't tell you about the eggs or the omelettes or the pancakes or the French toast. Although looking at other peoples plates they look great. Having had oatmeal at many, many places I can tell you that Thorntons stacks up with the best. As you can see from the photo, it comes with a lot of fresh fruit and raisins and nuts and milk and blueberries. OK so the blueberries are frozen, but hey this is Boston, what do you expect? My one complaint might be that the oatmeal could've been a tad warmer. This place is fantastic. The whole staff was very friendly and attentive, my cup never went without having hot fresh coffee in it. I ordered the Alex's Crazy 2's and it did not disappoint. For $10 you get 2 large sausage links, 2 pieces of bacon, 2 eggs fried or scrambled, 2 pieces of white/wheat/rye toast, 2 scoops of their spicy potatoes which were unbelievable and finally 2 pancakes. The food was outstanding, nothing over/undercooked and the taste was perfect, no need for salt or pepper. Let me tell you about these pancakes though, my goodness. They are giant fluffy taste machines and they will knock your socks off. You'll want to order more even when your stomach is full and wants to burst. The seating is sufficient and seemed to accommodate even during busy times. The wait was minimal and my food was hot and fresh. All in all it was a wonderful experience with fantastic food and friendly service! I would recommend Thornton's to anyone looking for a great breakfast with very reasonable pricing. read more

Was looking for some classic brunch food delivery and came across Thornton's. Got to try their breakfast burger with home fries. When it came the burger was a little disassemble so it wasn't as easy to eat but that's probably due to delivery. There was a lot of egg in this burger which wasn't terrible but didn't take away from the other ingredients such as the cheese sausage and English muffin. The English muffin itself was nice and toasted. The home fries were decent but nothing special. It didn't have a special flavor or a kick so needed some ketchup with that. Came in around noon. The waiter has little knowledge of the menu. 5 tables came in after us and got their food while we continued to wait. We finally asked and they said their wifi was spotty on their portable devices and the order never submitted (after a 45 min wait). Never was offered a refill on coffee. When our food arrived the order was incorrect. We also asked for the bill at the same time... And 20 minutes later they still had not brought it. When I went up to the counter to try and pay, our waiter was literally ducked behind the counter on his phone texting instead of attending to the customers. Didn't like how we were treated by the server. Once we were about to pay, I usually like to customize the tip I am going to leave for our server. Once I was ready to put the amount of tip I was going to give the server, she immediately took the POS machine and said to me that they have fixed amounts in that restaurant, hence we could only choose between the percentage of tips the POS machine indicated (even though the custom tip option was available lol). I don't know if this is a real rule from the restaurant (maybe it is not and the server just took advantage of my mom and I) but I wouldn't recommend a restaurant that forces you to choose only between few options to tip the server, instead of let you choose freely the percentage you want to tip. read more

First of all, I have to say that with only having 2 servers this morning, our server Mickey did a stellar job. She was polite, efficient and overall provided wonderful service. As for breakfast, it was great! Loved that it was close to the hotel we are staying at and we got a nice little table outside. I had the french toast with a side of crispy bacon, and man, I don't know what kind of bread they used, but it was great! Thorntons is an excellent breakfast spot..probably the best in all of Boston. On this last visit they were under construction..the whole block seemed to be (come to think of it most of Boston was..don't get me started). Anywho..the interior was not the Thorntons I remembered. It was an obvious temporary spot that they tried to make the most of..and they used the odd space pretty innovatively. Needless to say I in no way am holding their temporary "appearance" against them. They have..no joke..the best French toast I have ever tasted..and it tastes exactly as it did ten years ago which is awesome! Their menu is HUGE and the French toast is almost hidden in there..which I don't get because it is just one of the best things I ever tasted. I can't quite describe what makes it so special..but it just melts in your mouth. If you live in the area..or are just visiting the area..do yourself a favor and check it out. They are quite the popular establishment tho so go in expecting to have to wait a bit to be seated..but trust me it's worth it. read more
