Customer service was rather poor. I ordered poached eggs and iced tea. Food was alright (a pass, but nothing stands out). However, they forgot to add syrup to the iced tea (so it's super plain). When I tried to raise this issue, the server simply walked away. As it stands, it totally does not deserve the 3.5 star Yelp rating. It's more fitting if it's a 2 or 2.5 star. Sorry Yelpers, your rating disappointed me! ("Downgrading review" from 1 star to 0 star if that's even possible. I didn't give a lot of tips given the poor service I received. But I went home and got my credit card statement, I saw that the staff helped themselves to more tips than I wrote down on the receipt. We've been to Thornton's twice this week for breakfast. The first time we ordered a Breakfast Bagel and the Morning Delight. The second time we both got the Breakfast Burger (one with scrambled eggs and the other with eggs over medium). The Breakfast Burger was the best out of the three dishes but my eggs were over easy instead of over medium. The Breakfast Bagel was okay but I really was not a fan of the Morning Delight. The description said the dish includes an 8" round french toast, poached eggs covered with hollandaise, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil. The french toast didn't taste like french toast and it was definitely a strange combination with the mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil. Most of this dish remained on my plate by the end of the meal. This seems like the only not-high-end/super-expensive breakfast place in South End. The service is mostly fine, but the quality of the food seems to vary based on what you order. We'll still be coming back because it's so close to everything but I'll probably just stick to getting that breakfast burger. read more

Ordered the: -Felix Eggs Benedict: pretty much just turkey, avocado, poached eggs (of course) with hollandaise sauce on an English muffin. All the eggs bennies come with a side of home fries which I thoroughly enjoyed (especially with maple syrup -- that may sound strange but I love sweet and salty combos!) and fruit. The eggs benny was a little smaller than I expected and it was lacking a necessary amount of hollandaise sauce. However, for the price (~$8) you get a good amount of food!!! The price definitely sets it apart even though the quality was a bit on the lower end. Overall, a nice place for some cheap AND tasty breakfast dishes! read more

Thorntons is an excellent breakfast spot..probably the best in all of Boston. On this last visit they were under construction..the whole block seemed to be (come to think of it most of Boston was..don't get me started). Anywho..the interior was not the Thorntons I remembered. It was an obvious temporary spot that they tried to make the most of..and they used the odd space pretty innovatively. Needless to say I in no way am holding their temporary "appearance" against them. They have..no joke..the best French toast I have ever tasted..and it tastes exactly as it did ten years ago which is awesome! Their menu is HUGE and the French toast is almost hidden in there..which I don't get because it is just one of the best things I ever tasted. Needing a decent quick brunch before heading to the baseball game, decided upon this place since I was pining for either eggs or waffles. Your basic diner menu, with the added benefit of outside seating and convenient location. Sat down and ordered an iced coffee ($2ish), then didn't see the waiter for quite a bit. After making our food order, it took another 25-30min for it to come out (only two meals). I got the Belgian waffle with fresh fruit on top ($8) - which was nice and crispy on the outside and very good with the assortment of blueberries/strawberries/bananas they put on top. I didn't particularly like the one syrup option they had on the table, but not the biggest deal. Overall, we spent a lot more time there than we wanted to, so that sucked. Food is good however, so if you have no place to be, a decent cheap option in the area. read more

Delicious brunch place! I've recently gotten into brunches and have been to several around the area. This place is ALWAYS packed in the morning and it's no secret why. They are very good and cheap. There is a lot of food to choose from. If you want sweet and savory; go for the crepe or French toast. You want something with a TexMex flavor; go for the western omelet or breakfast burrito. There's fried eggs, scrambled, poached, etc... And it's all around $8 each no matter what you get. Quite the deal. I wish I could give it a five but the service CAN be quite atrocious. I know they're very busy but they are highly understaffed sometimes. A lot of times things are forgotten or you are completely annoyed. Known about Thornton's for years but the line was always too long, so I never went in. Finally got around to going (got a to-go order), and I have to say I understand what the buzz was about. I got the chicken burger with fries ($11.72 w/ tax). It had two chicken patties made of ground chicken (not grilled chicken chunks). It was absolutely fantastic. It was super fresh and I felt full after. The fries were surprisingly excellent as well. I wasn't expecting to like them as much as I did. I'm still not sure if I would wait in a big line to come here, but clearly many people are and do so. My recommendation, if you can't get a seat (there's not a lot of seating), is to just try out the place by making a pick up order. It's definitely a place worth trying and significantly more affordable than the majority of restaurants in Back Bay. The service is friendly and the restaurant appeared very clean. Thornton son Saturday morning is busy. We arrived and had to wait about 10 min for a table. The weather has turned in Boston so sitting outside with out a heater is a cold affair only for hardy New Englanders or Canadians (it's to bad). The server was great and the food was hot and delicious. The waitstaff was accommodating and helpful in their suggestions. My wife got their hot chocolate and found that it normally doesn't come with whipped cream on top. She asked the server for some and he was quick to return with a can of spray cream (her favorite). He went to put the can down on top of the cup "whipped cream on top". Even through his mask the wide grin was clearly visible. This place is some place to go in the back Bay Area. I came for brunch last week. Definitely not too fond of the place, me and a friend waited to get our bill for a while when it wasn't too busy. Not too sure what the waitress was doing, but the place was not packed to its max capacity and there were people waiting for tables when there were at least two empty tables. Our drinks came out fast and the refill for the hot coffee was free so that last a perk. I ordered the Amaretto French Toast, I liked it but I wasn't crazy about it. Fluffy pastry, and shaved almonds, nice to try if you're not too hungry. My friend ordered a breakfast plate, she got everything the only problem was that the bread was burnt. My boyfriend and I went here on a Saturday at around 10am. We were trying to avoid the 90+ minute wait at other places, and found that Thornton's had only a 20 minute wait. The structure for waiting is a little bit disorganized, as there is no host and you just wait in a line at the door, the crowd into the entry way. I imagine it is easy to cut the line and make some people upset, but when we were there, the other guests were well-behaved. I went to Thornton's a couple times probably 5 years ago. They still have a few items on their menu they had back then, which made me happy. It also looks like their prices haven't changed too much! This is welcome, in a city where it is all too easy to have suddenly spent almost $20 on a single brunch dish. I am happy to see benedicts for less that $10 at Thorntons. My boyfriend ordered the denver omelet with no cheese, but it came with cheese. The egg looked soft and not overcooked, which was awesome. I ordered an egg scramble and it was a very generous portion, also not overcooked. They didn't skimp on the butter on my toast. My friend had waffles and we both thought they tasted a little strange, not sweet, almost like they added lemon juice to the batter (maybe that's just how they do them). We came to Thorton's on a Saturday morning and, of course, there was a line. But not to worry, the line actually isn't as bad as it looks if you have 4 or less people. With larger groups, it gets more complicated and you may have to wait a bit longer. One point I want to make is that they take groups as that size table becomes available. So, if there's a table for two that's ready and your a group of four, the couple behind you will be seated before you. It makes sense and isn't a big deal. The food was good. I had the salmon benedict and it was delicious. I would get it again no doubt, but I would probably also like to try their other benedicts =D. My hubby had the MYO omelet. His only complaint was that it had an overwhelming amount of feta and less of actual veggies. Not a huge deal, but it'd be better if they were more equal. The service was good--we had absolutely no problems, like I've read previously. We would stop by again for sure. I love that you can order breakfast all day! Stopped by for brunch as it was one of the few brunch places around our hotel. We had walked by 2 days in a row and it seemed busy both days, food looked decent, and we liked the outdoor seating. Our party of 2 arrived to 2 open tables in this small, seemingly quant restaurant. After waiting 15 minutes to order, then an hour for our food, we were less than impressed. The food was mediocre at best. A standard omelette with ham and veggies for one of us and smoked salmon eggs Benedict for the other. The omelette was fine - difficult to mess that up. The Benedict was meh. A soggy English muffin, with a reasonable amount of smoked salmon, with an oddly bright yellow hollandaise sauce on top - that was luke warm. The "Hollandaise" was also lumpy as you can see form the pictures, odd texture. The worst part of both dishes were the fried potatoes. They were greasy, cold, and stale - non appetizing to say the least. The servers were polite enough, but slow, and we had to ask for drink refills and had long waits for food and the bill. This place can't manage a crowd. I walked in at 11:00 on a Saturday. There were a number of people milling around outside and I expected to put my name in. The person behind the register simply said there was a line outside (while it was pouring rain outside at that). When I walked back out, there was no lines but just people standing in different directions. When I asked, no one knew where any line was. I really wanted to love this place... The menu made my mouth water the entire t ride there... But it did not live up to par. I came here on a weds morning when they were not that busy so they have no excuse. I got the egg salmon which sounded awesome.... but the hollandaise sauce was not thick and creamy but rather liquidy and bland, the salmon was way too salty and I got a huge portion of capers when a little would have been fine. The home fries did not have any flavor except spiciness, and to top it off I found egg shells in my food..c'mon really?? (ok I've done that before without noticing...which is WHY i go out for breakfast...duh) and honestly the tiny piece of melon that another user complained about being more like garnish was the only good part... The coffee was ok, nothing special, I liked that they had sugar in containers that you had to scoop out with a spoon rather than packets or a bottle you "shake" into your coffee, they also had jelly in a container too which was a nice touch. Thornton's bills itself as a restaurant. If you are fortunate enough to dine outside in nice weather, you would indeed get a "restaurant feel." If you dine inside, you get the feel and charm of a cozy diner with better than expected food (at least for breakfast, when I dined there) and friendly service. The breakfast menu has a phenomenal variety of egg/omelet/pancake options. Coffee was hot, served and refilled promptly. If it's busy, expect your meal to take a little longer. From my vantage point, I could see they were working as diligently as possible. My breakfast, the vanilla amaretto french toast, was 4 1" thick pieces with a slightly crisp coating, covered with sliced almonds and powdered sugar. I think for the price, the portion could have been slightly larger, but it was delicious. The omelets are the deal here, quite large, and oh so many inexpensive ingredients which you can select. One person at my table was unexpectedly surprised, pleasantly - he asked for no home fries, and they substituted for him, without prompting, a variety of fresh chilled fruit. Thornton's is also a very short walk from quite a few large hotels in the immediate vicinity. I suggest if you consider it that you show up early, especially on nice Summer days. read more

We visited this diner twice. It's a novelty in Back Bay because it's casual and inexpensive. This is reflected in the long line to be seated. The line moves pretty quickly. Otherwise, it's a pretty typical diner. The food is good. The portions are large. The eggs and omelettes are good. The servers are good, especially considering how fast they have to work. We had a couple of Greek salads for lunch. They were straightforward, but didn't have stuffed grape leaves. The coffee was a bit weak. My pet peeve about this restaurant is that the cream is served in pitchers that are very hard to control- the cream comes gushing out and our coffee remained resolutely extra-light, no matter how careful we were. I had been here before a number of times, years ago and had waited outside in a relatively fast-moving line to get in, (there is no indoor waiting area. The prices can't be beat in this area for the food you usually get. This morning, around 8am, there was not only no line, but almost nobody inside. I was not sure if this was because of a change in quality since my last visit, or if there were just so many other new and better options in the neighborhood. So service was fast because of this, but my big disappointment came when my favorite breakfast plate, The Gusto, came. The menu describes it as "Poached eggs on fried potato halves, filled w/ sauteed spinach, mushroom & bacon, topped with provolone cheese and pesto parmesan sauce, served w/ toast and melon...$8.64" It turned out to be served now on under done home fries, not the crispy crunchy base of a fried potato halves. A total change in the textual and taste experience. I would not have minded if the server had mentioned that they were not available as written. But to not mention the change at all was just not good customer care. If it was a temporary change, they should be on top of it and let customers know. If it is a permanent change in the interest of efficiency or cost, update the menus in house and online. Simple. Even a sticker over the printed menu would suffice. Or a line through that ingredient. If this is how they are operating now in general, I may not come back. But I will probably give it another try some day to find out. read more

SERVICE: There was a line when I came, despite the fact that I arrived at 9:30 on a Monday when theoretically everyone should be at work. He line moved relatively fast though. I can imagine the lines get crazy here on the weekends. Waitress was friendly and service was fast. ATMOSHPERE: This is a pretty small place, and despite their maximizing the space here, it doesn't feel too crowded or cramped. The place is very casual. FOOD: the eggs were cooked exactly how I like my medium fried eggs, with a partial runny/ partial pasty yolk. The home fries were really, really good. They weren't flavored with just salt, there were other hard-to-identify ingredients as well, and they had the slightest kick. The home fries were not crispy, which is how I usually like them, but the flavor was so good, I didn't mind. The toast was pre-buttered, and therefore a little bit under-buttered in my opinion. Several friends were visiting so we decided to catch up over Saturday brunch in an area that was accessible to everyone. When we arrived, there was already a line out the door but for a party of 8, we only had to wait 25 minutes! Once seated, our waitress immediately gave us a big smile and our menus. I ordered the eggs benedict and it came out piping hot and smelled heavenly. Some places make their hollandaise sauce a little too thick and creamy for my liking but Thorton's did it just right. In addition, our waitress brought out all the dishes within seconds of each other so we didn't need to wait around for too long for everyone to get their food. I also appreciated that our waitress was attentive throughout our meal, consistently coming by to refill people's coffee and provide more water to our table. We were all famished and the food did not disappoint. It was definitely familiar comfort food and nothing that was too fancy, but great nonetheless. When it came time to pay, I was dreading the long bill and how we would split everything. Our waitress came out with individual bills for each of us, which I thought was so nice! My wife and I went to Thornton's twice about a month ago when we were visiting Boston. It is very close to many hotels in the back bay area and basically right across the street from the Prudential Center. The Sunday we came it was pretty busy and the staff seems to be very concerned about the seating that you select even if the place doesn't seem that busy. They know the trend because shortly after we were seated groups of people come in and the place filled up fast. The other day of the week we visited it was a Thursday morning and again even though the place was maybe 20% full they were always concerned where 2 people sat as to not take up a large table. Understandable if you're trying to service as many people as possible so maybe don't be offended by this if you walk in and are asked to select a 2 seat table. The food now is good considering you can really twist breakfast so many ways. I had the crazy two's both times I was there and the portions are very good for somebody like me who can eat a good portion. The coffee is filled constantly to the point that you don't really have ask for refills and a thermos of cream is already on the table. For the size of the place they seem to have a lot of staff so attention is not an issue. Good food, good attention and good size portions made us come back a 2nd time in the same week. read more
