A couple of years ago, I scheduled an appointment, and found Thor to be responsive, knowledgeable, fairly-priced, and did a great job on the repair. I was quite glad to have found a good new mechanic. Unfortunately, a couple of months later, when I tried to schedule another appointment, he never returned the call. I left a second message a day or so later, guessing that my first message had somehow gotten lost. Still, no return call. I ended up going somewhere else but thought it very odd, but gave him the benefit of the doubt that maybe something non-business-related was going on. So, now, two years later, I again had the need of a mechanic for a maintenance-related issue on a different vehicle. I thought to try him again. And... the exact same non-responsiveness. No call back at all. Not sure what his deal is, but it's definitely not a successful way to do business or engender good will. read more

Finding a mechanic that you trust, has quick availability, and fast workaround is really a difficult task. But Thor checks all of those boxes! He is extremely responsive, can get you in short notice, calls to let you know your options, and he gets your car out of there quickly. Before we had found him, I was calling around for a mechanic and almost all of them were booked out and had a secretary and just felt way bigger and like you'd get lost in the mix. I'm so happy that I found Thor's shop. I had been through quite the ordeal with a prior mechanic regarding the engine and transmission mounts. It left me without a car and in bad shape. My car was scary to drive, because it had so much vibration. I worried that, over time, the vibration might damage other parts and wanted it fixed. It rattled me when I drove. Thor heard the issue upon inspection and told me that they were noisy and causing engine vibration transfer. He fixed what other mechanics wouldn't fix (or even identify for the most part) since October of 2020. I felt his price was extremely economical, especially since I opted for OEM. I'm pleased. I also had my oil pan replaced. I liked that he didn't try to push this at all. I'm the one who wanted this done. He explained that there wasn't actual leaking from the car onto the ground during the time it was at his shop. Basically, he explained that the old pans are replaced using a sealant, where the newer cars have the pan permanently on. Thus, the seal on the older cars is often not perfect. Another very nice thing about going here is I was treated with respect. He's straightforward, just wants to fix the car's issue, if there is one. He isn't critical about the use of aftermarket parts, which is nice, because oftentimes, they work just as well and save money. I just decided to go OEM with my Honda due to the issues I had with the previous mechanic's use of aftermarket. Going here was a good change for me, and I am glad I found a mechanic. read more

I have worked with half a dozen auto repair shops in Portland, and this is the first one I found that I am unequivocally impressed with. How I found them: I needed an oil change, was tired of getting over charged at Oil Can Henry's, so let my GPS Navigator find the nearest one from where i was driving. Thor's came up and I realized that I was willing to let someone named after the God of Lightening look at my car. What Happened: Thor (no, that's his real name, and he rocks!) changed my oil, when I asked him about new tires, he said no problem but I would be better off going to Les Schwab for a better price. Well done Thor, I am at this point impressed with your possible honesty and candor, and his price was 1/3 of OCH's What Then?: I went back for my next oil change. (first time I have done that within a month of when you are supposed to) He did a great job again, got me back to DEQ standards, here's the good part. I had previously taken my car to Reborn Auto to look at my gas gauge, they disconnected it and told me it was $300 plus to replace. I asked Thor to look at it, he said it was just dirty, cleaned it out reconnected it, no charge and it worked perfectly. Thor now has a life time customer. Thor has been the primary service provider for my Jeep when I'm in the Pacific NW. His customer service is outstanding. He's always willing to explain the problem, show me what and how things were broken, and provide accurate estimates for repairs. I drive my vehicle 25K+ miles a year around the US and whenever I need service it's usually on short-notice. I deliberately try to wait until I'm back in the NW for repairs so Thor can work on it. He has always been able to get me in and out in a reasonable amount of time. He's the only mechanic I've been able to trust to fix things right the first time. The last quote my old mechanic gave me was for work I can't even remember, totaling $1200. I opted out, because my car isn't even worth that much. That was six months ago. A coworker told me about Thor's recently because my check engine light came on and I needed it off to pass DEQ. I went into Thor's at 8am today. He called me by 9am and said there were five different things prompting the light. Only a few of them needed immediate attention. And all that work only totaled three hundred dollars. My experience with Thor wasn't stellar like everyone else and i wish it was just that little tad better to get the 5 stars. I went in for service, timing belt, which is pretty major. I did like that Thor allowed me to bring my own parts. i am anal about what i use and i get a good deal on parts anyways. It is fair that he bumped up his hourly rate a bit to compensate for this. only thing that disappointed me was that when i had all the parts for this service; the seals and tensioner, he didn't automatically install them. but that was taken care of after a phone call. so he doesn't get the 5 but he does get a high 4. read more

Although Thor has done good work on an Acura I own, a pre-purchase inspection of a used Toyata with 150k miles failed to look at some important indicators of the engine's condition. Based in large part on his favorable inspection report, I purchased the car only to find within two months that the spark plugs were bad, two cylinders had compression of less than 100 psi and an oil usage issue mentioned at the time of inspection was really a head gasket failure that was undetected. Rather than proceed with an engine rebuild or replacement, I sold the car at a considerable financial loss. So, I was duped by the seller and Thor's $50 inspection actually cost me several thousand dollars and failed to accomplish my intended purpose of the inspection -- to detect any major engine issues prior to purchase. read more

I hardly ever give reviews on Yelp, but I feel compelled to write an amazing review for Thor's Auto. We've been taking our cars there for a few years and he has always given us honest, reasonably priced service. I recently took my Honda Pilot to Beaverton Honda for a recall and they came back with a laundry list of necessary repairs. Two major repairs put the total price at close to $1,300. The dealership said the repairs should be done ASAP and painted a pretty scary picture of what might happen if I didn't do it. I took it to Thor's who told the repairs were not necessary and the issues were normal wear and tear. He told me how to detect and what to look for should the problems go beyond normal wear and tear and become necessary. Thor's suggested I just watch for it and bring the car back to him whenever we wanted to do the repairs. The honesty and integrity displayed by this shop far exceeds any automotive repair place I have ever been to. Ever. If you have any qualms about taking your car there for your next repair I suggest you get a diagnostic and quote from Thor's and compare that with any other shop. Plus, just talk to the guy at Thor's and you will see why I have rated them so highly. read more

I can't say enough about the honesty and integrity of Thor and his customer service. I have taken my cars to him for years for general service and just recently ran into a major problem with my 2005 Nissan Xterra. I called him on a Thursday morning because my truck all of a sudden could not make it up a small hill. Felt like a transmission problem but I was not sure. I know there were plenty of other vehicles in his lot he could have been working on that day but knowing this was my only transportation he had the diagnosis by that afternoon. While the diagnosis was not such a good one (faulty radiator leaking fluid into the transmission) Thor said he has had luck with replacing the radiator and aggressively flushing the transmission. He suggested we try this and hopefully we caught it in time before the transmission had been damaged. By Friday afternoon my car was ready and the transmission is working fine. Reports from websites regarding the faulty radiator Nissan installed have been in the thousands of dollars ($4000-$6000). Thor was honest and rather than saying I needed a new transmission he recommended we try flushing the transmission and replacing the radiator first. Other shops (Nissan Dealership included) would have and did say I needed to replace the radiator AND the transmission. Thor is quite possibly the nicest, and most honest man I've ever had the pleasure of giving my money to. He's seen our family's vehicles for years, and never has he steered us wrong. On Monday, my car shut down and every single idiot light on the dash came up. When I started it again, they were all gone with the exception of the check engine light. After a few minutes, the vehicle stability system lights came on, and the car began to shake. I limped in to Thor, who immediately hooked it up, and got a plethora of error codes. He said. "there are too many to know what the actual problem is, but your car isn't safe to drive. I'm going to have to dig in to this and figure it out." I left my car behind, and was worried that I'd be out tons of money, I researched a ton and was pretty sure I knew the sensor that was out, and it wasn't going to be cheap. Well, he called and said, "it just needed an oil change." It was that sensor, but the sensor uses oil pressure, and there was likely a particle that got on it, and screwed everything up. He could have easily replaced the sensor, and charged me an arm and a leg. Not Thor, only what's necessary. He drove my car extensively and it hasn't come back on. If you're taking your car to anyone but him, you're making a huge mistake. read more

I have taken an old Infiniti for the past year to Thor's auto and have literally saved thousands of dollars in repairs from what I was told by the Infiniti dealership and another mechanic. I was told by one mechanic a recent repair would cost $1200, and I took it to Thor and he told me what the real problem was, tightened a pin and didn't charge me. I have never in my 30 years of driving and owning cars found a more honest, reliable mechanic. I don't live close to Lake Oswego, but I wouldn't take my car any where else ! read more

I have taken a car in to him to do something I thought needed to get done and he has talked me out of it saying that it was not necessary! Bet most that read this have not had this experience, right? The three main criteria for a car mechanic IMHO are honesty, competency, and reasonable in pricing. Thor gets 5 stars on all counts. With a whole string of family cars we've run through his shop there are probably more than 50 jobs he's done for us. I sometimes don't even ask the price; the only time it ended up being a lot more than I expected it was due to my ignorance about the cost of a timing belt and in the end I saw that he was as fair with that as with everything else. (And he has inspected cars for us pre-purchase and his assessments were just fine.) read more

As a result of the other two favourable reviews here, I visited Thor recently. I needed oil pressure checked. It turned out that he needed a special tool to get into the port and he didn't own it, Although he no doubt spent some time trying to get in, he didn't charge me. I thought he was a decent and competent guy and I'd be happy to use him again. Plus his shop was spacious and tidy. read more
