The creamy soup base was filled with an ample amount of diced clams and the right amount of potatoes (I.e. Enough but not too many) though the potatoes were a bit over cooked to my liking. I also ordered a side of Salt & Vinegar Fries. The portion was just right and the flavor was correct. The vinegar added in the kitchen left the fries quite limp and some were a bit soggy. The out of the fryer crispness could have been preserved by serving the vinegar on the side. My companions ordered jambalaya and both thought it tasted very good. However one thought the rice was over cooked. All that said, we were originally headed somewhere else, and when I pulled up the menu of the other place on my smart phone, I think we made the right choice. Addendum: Since dining here and writing my review I've learned that owners are retiring and that the establishment is closing. We walked past Dewey's every time we have been in Portland. Late night it's full of people sometimes having live music. We went on a Monday when they first opened. We felt like it was annoying we came in. Our server didn't seem like he really cared about his job. Also seemed annoyed we were there. We almost left to go to another place but ordered anyway. I have been coming to $3 Deweys off and on for about 10 years. It has always been a staple in Portland but within the past few years it had been closed and reopened with new ownership. My most recent visit I was thoroughly impressed. It was a lot busier than I had seen in other recent visits. The atmosphere is a typical pub with lots of people having louder conversations but it wasn't overbearing. The beer selection is very good (as every bar in Portland should). I ordered the Buffalo chicken Mac and cheese which I've had at tons of restaurants and for the money I was not disappointed. It was about $16 and came out in a huge bowl that was completely full. I was starving and I barely made a dent in it. The Mac and cheese was phenomenal! I obviously didn't finish my meal even though I ate a lot and the to-go box was the heaviest I've ever carried out of a restaurant. It was ridiculous! You definitely get what you pay for at $3 Deweys. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the Portland area. Very pleasantly surprised! We were out and about in the Portland area and it started raining and we we hungry so we ducked into the closest place we found. We definitely second guessed our choice at first, thinking this was just another pub that would have mediocre food. We opted to stay and we're seated promptly. The menu is all the usual expected items such as burgers, sandwiches salads and more. We went with a Mac n cheese, buttermilk chicken sandwich and a cheesesteak sandwich. It took a while to get the food despite it being rather empty but it was worth the wait. The food was delicious! The buttermilk chicken looked, at first glance, like it was going to be over cooked and maybe a bit dry but it was the exact opposite. It was so juicy and had such a great flavor. The Mac n cheese along with the cheese steak were also big hits. There are certainly tons of choices in the area for food but you certainly won't be disappointed if you wind up here! read more

First off, probably check your old Dewey's expectations at the door. The inside is similar though they made a couple of nice seating improvements, and yes, there is still popcorn. The prices are all considerably higher than the old Dewey's but there's just no way those old prices were going to hold up in the Old Port in 2019. Thankfully the food is also much better if you ask me. Like many others, I loved the old Dewey's for what it was: a cheap, unpretentious place to drink and eat all the free popcorn you could handle. We would get some food on occasion but for the last couple years it was just okay. This time around I paid $14 for a turkey club (with fries) but it was an enormous sandwich that you would be hard pressed to finish in one sitting. I was here with a friend a couple weeks back and jealously watched her eating it, while I had chili and split onion rings (both very good). Had the club myself this last time (well, half for lunch, the other half for dinner) and it was excellent and worth every penny. They had blues music on a Sunday and are apparently serving brunch now as well. The music fluctuated between too loud to talk and a nice volume. I don't know if I would come here during the live music they have on Fridays/Saturdays or not, but I believe the cover charge was only for their opening weekend. The beer list is still extensive and for my tastes I would have liked to see even more of the up and coming Maine breweries, but they are represented like one Cushnoc Tap, one Foundation, one Orono, but it was also really heavy on Shipyard and some of the other mainstream micros that you can find pretty much everywhere. I do think some of the beer and drink prices are a bit high though, even keeping the Old Port location in mind. Hopefully they'll start doing some beer specials each day or put a few value buys on there for those willing to look. It's a new business and I'm sure that will come with occasional issues, especially once the tourists arrive and it's nuts all the time. That being said, while it's not really a cheap watering hole anymore, it's got a lot going for it, starting with the food. read more

This place was always a favorite watering hole in my younger days . Food was always ok. Well I went with a group of friends and let me tell you .... super excited with the gluten free options. So many choices our waitress was amazing and totally will to talk and answer questions. Always have concerns when it says gluten free but it is not really because of cross contamination. Food was amazing, drinks were yummy and atmosphere was wonderful! Looking forward to going back.... which we chose to do this evening. My BFF and I were looking forward to a night out of good fun, food, drinks, atmosphere. Which again, we got it all at Dewey's! Our waiter Chase was hands down one of the best waiters we have had in a long time. He was on top of his waiting game, great personality, funny, was very attentive! We explained our table was gluten free. We ordered bacon wrapped scallops he returned to explain that they have a separate fryer for GF customers and normally the scallops are fried but because of seafood allergies they would not cross contaminate the GF fryer so the chef would be baking our scallops. Omg thank you! It was greatly appreciated they took pride in keeping it gluten free and so do we. I ordered the bacon BBQ burger on GF free roll. Burger was cooked to perfection. Ordered medium rare and that is what I got! I giggled at the bun because GF roll is smaller then the burger is self.. slider size burgers would have made the roll look appropriate but I can't complain they tasted amazing. BFF ordered blacked fish tacos GF and she loved them. All and all another great experience. We had a quick and delicious meal at Three Dollar Dewey's in Portland, Maine. We called with 30 minutes notice the week of the 4th of July for a hangry party of 9 with kids, adults, and 2 gluten allergies. We had a big space with a knowledgeable waiter about the kitchen's gluten allergy precautions and options. Service was great. Was in town for a day and needed some food. Did a local search and Three Dollar Deweys was nearby with a good rating. Atmosphere is awesome. I like to layout and decor. Made me feel like I was in an older New England Tavern. Host greeting was great, and they sat us right away. Server was pleasant and attentive. Order a hot buttered lobster roll as one does in Maine when you're 500' from the docks!.. It came out on a roll packed with lettuce (an issue for me due to the strangest food allergy ever) so I asked that they just re-toast up a roll for me as the lobster was easy to separate from the lettuce without it being an allergy issue as it wasn't mixed in. This is where it starts to go south and gets 3 stars from me... a re-toast of a roll took almost 10 minutes... and they weren't THAT busy at the time. But okay, not a big deal. It comes to the table NOT TOASTED! Anyone who eats hot buttered lobster rolls knows this is going to ruin the flavor/texture of the dish. But, I wasn't going to make a big deal of it and just decided to eat the lobster meat with drawn butter and move on. Welp the lobster meat was flavorless! Clearly it had been steamed with un-seasoned water, chilled and then re-heated. OOF! Again, we are in Maine right by the docks! Shameful!! Overall, cool place but I don't think I'll ever go there again. I'm in town 2-3 times a year and this just won't be on the places to go back to. Maybe a different dish would have been better, maybe not. Just seemed off to me how lackluster such an iconic dish could be when the restaurant is SO close to where you get the freshest possible ingredient to make the dish. read more

I think they rely on their unique name to bring customers in the door, only to be disappointed. The service is dead slow and often rude the few times I've come in, the food has been dry and stale, and the atmosphere is lacking. Communal long picnic tables are the majority of the seating which aren't the most comfortable, especially with the long wait times that seem to be the normal. I've waited 20+ minutes for a beer before and decided to walk up to the bar instead of continuing to wait, only to have to wait 10+ minutes standing at the bar to get a beer. What gives? A week ago I went in with friends for trivia and ordered a steak and cheese that was so dry it was hard to eat. My friend was eating the chicken parm and flat out said "This is not good", before I even mentioned that I wasn't enjoying my meal. Stopped here for a drink and app with some friends. We weren't here very long, but it was super lively and seemed like a popular spot. We had a drink and the Deweys Sampler to snack on. The sandwich was a lot smaller and instead of the usual shaved turkey, I got slimy lunch meat. A single piece or cheese, sad bacon in-between uneventful toast. My friend ordered the pulled pork nachos. Way overcooked and the driest meat I have seen. The nachos were sent back. Not edible. So disappointed. Will no longer recommend this place. Something about this place I really like. It's not a place I would go out for a classy meal, but with a name like "Three Dollar Deweys", that's not what they are trying to be. Immediately when you walk in you get the smell of popcorn and a good time. This place is really affordable, which is a big reason why I liked it. I got a cider (in a can) I can't remember the name of it, but I really liked it- I remember my bartender recommending it. There was a bunch of people there during my visit. A large group near the window, a family, and a bunch of locals just out having a good time. I ordered the crab dip; it was good, but not great. This is a tradition when we go to Maine to visit my sister for Thanksgiving weekend. We have been doing this trip for over 30 years and have been going to this restaurant for probably more than 10 of those. It's a pub style restaurant where you can help yourself to freshly popped popcorn. They have bar and long tables with benches and they have tables with chairs and can accommodate large parties. They have a variety of draft beers and are always more than willing to let you sample the ones that are unfamiliar. The service is always excellent and always friendly. On this cold cold Thanksgiving weekend it was nice and warm in there and we had a wonderful time together as a family. This time we did not order food but we have in the past and everything has always been good pub style food. read more
