I love chicken and rice, so I came with a friend for lunch on a Monday. The restaurant itself is casual and pretty small so on a day that might be more busy, it might be easier to get take out. This is pretty much a place that just specializes on chicken and rice so the menu is relatively small; but even so, everything looked so good, and it took me so long to decide what I wanted. I finally decided on the fried chicken and rice while my friend got the poached chicken and rice. The service was great and food came out quickly. It was a very simple but delicious meal. Lovely casual spot for some homey thai food. The shop itself is pretty quaint with limited seating, but usually not too busy. I got the Zabb fried chicken plate with sticky rice, and my friend got the poached chicken. Both were yummy and very reasonably priced (I think around $15 for each plate). If you come with a friend, I'd recommend getting these two dishes and sharing. For far less in price, go to pretty much any Malaysian or Singaporeen restaurant in Queens and order their Hainanese chicken and compare. Yeah, yeah, this is Thai style poached chicken, then compare it to Eim Khao Mun Kai in Elmhurst, still no match. Bottom line is that no matter which country it's from, I'm looking for the most tender and moist poached chicken ... ... and Three Roosters failed. With that said, their Zab Fried Chicken was not bad. I have had better versions of fried chicken on rice, but this one was tasty. I give credit where credit is due. If I come back, I would order this one again. The batter was crispy and the meat was juicy and flavorful. Btw, the rice and sauce were both decent. Nothing amazing, but does the job. I'm taking a star off because while I enjoyed the food, it wasn't nearly enough (as some others have mentioned as well). I am OBSESSED with the food here, literally came 3 times in one month. I usually get the poached chicken plate bc it kinda reminds me of hainan chicken. The soup that comes with it is one of the best soups I've had bc it's so light but has so much flavor at the same time. Also in love with the ginger rice -- overall the poached chicken plate has very light flavors but it goes so well with their sauces. I also tried the zab fried chicken plate once and that was also really tasty. I'd recommend that one if you're into more "heavy" food (although still not even heavy at all compared to fried chicken anywhere else). It comes with the same soup but the rice is sticky rice instead. I can confirm that their zab seasoning is phenomenal, same applies to their zab fries. Their portions look small but I feel like I always end up full afterwards. So yum!!! We got the Poached Chicken Set and ZAB Fried Chicken Set. We were feeling super hungry, but the server assured us that this was enough food for two people, and she was right! Checking in on Yelp gets you a free drink too. Snagged a table for quick dinner eats. Combined taste: 4.5 Individual taste or lack thereof: 3 Key ingredient missing: star anise Pros: good combined taste (flavor comes from the rice ONLY), friendly staff (they offer a refill on the "soup" and the free Asian Starburst for dessert) Cons: flavorless chicken, bland broth (and not soup as they call it) unless you count the loads of black pepper on the refill, portions are small (at least 25% smaller than a Chinatown rice plate or 35% smaller than an Empanada Mama entree across the street). Server called my dish Hainan Chicken Rice and what I think it is: Hainan-flavored ginger rice topped with flavorless steamed chicken topped with cilantro. When you put all 3 in your mouth, then you get the Hainan Chicken flavor. Perhaps the loads of black pepper (in the refill only) in the broth and not soup will bring the taste even closer to home. My mom spends 5 hours slaving in the kitchen to make Hainan chicken so I am not comparing this dish to it, but the chicken itself is truly FLAVORLESS. Found this place on yelp as I was looking up Hainanese chicken rice. Their menu is small but I find all the options interesting. At one point I was itching to try all the chicken options. I ended up getting the poached chicken platter with an extra of fried chicken plus a side of zab fries. Yelp check in gets a free drink so I got thai tea with lime juice. Hainanese chicken rice was the reason I came so I felt obligated to get the poached chicken as my main. It's actually the most disappointing of all the things I ordered. I got dark meat but the meat was a bit rougher than I'd like. I know poached has more subtle flavor but I expected more herbs. The skin could be more "jelly" as well. I do want to praise that it tastes fresh as sometimes poached/steamed chicken has that reheated taste. The ginger rice is weaker than expected. I thought the tradition was to use chicken oil in the rice. I guess that's why I found this to be slightly off. The rice got a bit hard by the end of the meal. I guess it could be avoided if I ate faster. I needed to dip into the sauce to add moisture while eating the chicken. Otherwise I'd prefer to not dip it. I'm not the biggest fan of cucumber but I like how their's looks very neat and tastes very clean as well. I like the accompanying soup. At other places this soup is often very oily and too salty/msg. Here it's more clear with plenty of white pepper (!!) and subtle chicken sweetness. It's quite comforting. Appreciate how their cilantro is crisp and green. Coincidentally their oven broke so grilled chicken isn't available. Fried chicken side it is. It came with garlic flakes which gave great flavor and crunch at the same time. The chicken itself was crunchy and tender but not hot. It was literally room temperature. If I had to prioritize I'd rather it be like this with the right texture but wrong temperature. They keep emphasizing it's a bit hot but I'd say it's only 2.5/10 for heat. I like the bright citrus flavor and sweetness that reminds me of lemon flavored wafer cookies. There's also savory umami that doesn't dry out the mouth. They're also very generous with seasoning so every fry has plenty of flavor. Also nice how the fries didn't feel oily at all. It came with a sauce that's kinda like duck sauce. I can pass on it. The fries were amazing as is. Thai tea with lime juice. I didn't go for my usual thai tea (with milk) since they have a different variation here. I figured the lime would be a refreshing choice. It came out better than expected. It's not too sweet and the lime is refreshing enough and the Thai tea is prominent enough. Now I'm curious what their thai tea with milk will be like!! The employees were nice too checking in on me multiple times. I noticed how they didn't rush people to leave when they're finished eating either. Very cute the kitchen used a chicken squeak to signal that food is ready to be served instead of a traditional bell. Also cute they give you candy upon getting the check.
