Not so thrifty. For one day renting an economy car during non-peak hours with only minimal car coverage was an astronomical $256! No agent at their counter, you had to go to Hertz, and though the staff said the car was full, it was in fact 2 gallons low. Flew into El Paso and needed a rental car. Thrifty was by far the lowest cost option, so I went with them. I got a deal through my work and prepaid for 4 days and it was less than $100.00. Can't beat the price, I will give them that. Now, the bad. We got to the airport and went to the Thrifty booth and there was a sign up that said to head to the Hertz Gold Booth outside. We walked over there, and there was a huge line. They only had 2 guys working the booth and a line of about 30 people outside. We had about 10 people ahead of us and it took almost an hour to get up to the front. There were still 20 or so people behind us, too. We finally got our car (Ford Fusion) and were on our way. Right when I started driving it, it felt weird like it was too high up. Turns out that the tire pressure of 3 wheels was too high, and one wheel was way low. Recommended tire pressure is 36PSI per tire, and 3 tires were at 43, and one was at 37. It made for a horrible, unbalanced ride. We pulled into a gas station immediately and got the tire pressures fixed which helped immensely. The car itself was ok. No issues with it after fixing the tire pressure. Push to start, lots of room for 2 big dudes, backup camera etc. Decent car and it got us up and down New Mexico with ease. Return was a breeze. I did have to fill out a damage claim due to a rock hitting the windshield and causing a chip. I filed it with my insurance, and supposedly they are going to contact Thrifty to take care of it (Will updated later if need be). Would I rent with them again? Maybe. Price was right, but the wait to get the car was a real downer. read more

Careful when renting from this place and be prepared to be disappointed! When I made and PAID for this reservation, weeks in advance, the agreement was for me to pick up a car on a Thursday. On the day of the rental and about thirty minutes before the pick-up time, Thrifty Car Rental sent me text messages and an email telling me that it was time to choose a vehicle. I followed the given instructions but when I showed up to pick up the car, there was NO CAR RESERVED for me. In addition to this, there was no one from Thrifty to assist me to explain what happened. I was told by someone in the car rental garage that there were no cars available for that evening and suggested for me to return the following morning. As you can imagine, this was not only and inconvenience but it also disrupted my travel plans. It was late at night and I had to find a ride back home. I also had to modify and cancel other travel arrangement plans. I returned the following morning to the airport and I was fortunate to get a car from Thrifty Car Rental. By the way, the rental was for three days. After returning the car, I received an email to complete a survey based on my rental experience. It was through this survey that I requested for me someone from Thrifty Car Rental to contact me. Christine from HERTZ/Thrifty Car Rental called me. Because of the inconvenience this experience had caused, she asked me if I wanted a certificate for a future reservation or a credit of $44.00 to go back to my credit card. I told her that I would prefer a credit to go back to my credit card. Sadly, HERTZ/Thrifty Car Rental never issued with this credit. I called them many times to resolve this issue but was unsuccessful. I called my credit card bank to confirm the credit and was told that it never posted. I also contacted the website where I rented the car and let them know what had happened. They said that after trying to pursue every option in advocacy for my car rental problem, HERTZ/Thrifty would not approve my request for the reason that "the reservation made was confirmed and used". Yes, I did rent a car, but Thrifty did not commit to the "terms and conditions "at the time the reservation was made and paid for. They also did not follow through and honor the credit they said was being issued for the inconvenience. Never recommending or using HERTZ/Thrifty again. read more

Was told my deposit and bill would be $270. Was charged $370. Vehicle was returned 1:10 minutes before scheduled return time. Vehicle was inspected 37 minutes after my return time and I was charged an extra hour for a late return. I called the office and all I received was voice prompts to visit their site. No one was at their desk either when doing pick up. Had to get the car from the Hertz kiosk that was doing every agency that morning. Very bad experience overall. read more

Extremely leery after our last rental experience in El Paso, but Thrifty was wonderful! We arrived and our car had a gas cover issues and the young girl (who was courteous and professional) automatically upgraded us. After hours of travel we were beat and our car was a bit dirty (we didn't care). The next day we noticed some scratches on the car and in the past rental companies have tried to charge us for existing damage. Our return was also great. He handled us in minutes, with zero issues and confined the final bill. Traveling is tough these days and it can be difficult to get good customer service. Both employees that help d us we're great. I recently rented a car from Thrifty. I arrived at the El Paso Airport after 7 PM to the counter at Hertz in the garage. There were two people in line, but it took at least half an hour to get started because there was only one attendant. I finally got a choice of two cars (not the midsize I had reserved online) so I chose a 2020 Nissan Altima. It was clean and had some black substance on the back side fender which the attendant said it was just soap. I wanted to make sure I wasn't charged for something I didn't do. I used the car for a week without any problems. I filled the fuel tank the night before I was to leave to save time. I had to drive to the airport to return the car by 10:30 AM. The car wouldn't start and a message on the screen said key malfunction and to look in the manual for key instructions. There were 3 books in the glove compartment, and each was the size of a dictionary. I looked for the key instructions in each book to no avail. I couldn't find the troubleshooting instructions regarding a key malfunction. Then I tried to open the key fob to maybe change the battery, but it was stuck, and I didn't want to break it. I called three different phone numbers for Hertz and Thrifty for help, but I was forwarded to an answering machine each time. I panicked because I had to be at the airport in an hour to catch my flight I got a ride to the airport and took the key fob to the Hertz counter for help and to explain what had happened. I had to leave the car at the residence I was staying at. The attendant had to call over someone else to tell me what to do next. They both had no idea since they hadn't had this problem before. After telling me the consequences I might have (which is disrespectful customer service since it was not my fault the key fob didn't function at a critical time). I was to call emergency roadside assistance to give me a claim number to close out my account after I informed them where the car was so they could tow it back to the airport. They texted me several times until they finally had the car back at the airport. No one called me to let me know what to expect next or what I would be charged for their faulty key fob malfunction. I called the Thrifty service number 48 hours later and only gave them the claim number so they could look up the information. After several minutes the representative said to call back after 24 to 48 hours and he would let them know what I needed to know. Since it is Friday I have to wait until Monday now; hopefully, they will understand my predicament with a faulty car. Thrifty charged my credit card for $89 with no explanation and that the charge for the rental was pending???? They seem be very confused in this situation just as I was. Since no one answers the phone for assistance, I didn't have any choice but to leave and let them deal with the problem. Now I expect them to overcharge me for something I had no control over. I will not be renting from Thrifty, Dollar, or Hertz any time soon. read more

Had such a surprisingly great experience here! From getting my car situated to the free upgrade to the easy, fun return (thnx Tamika, you are the best!), I could not have asked for anything more! Cars were inexplicably sold out in ELP the morning I arrive, I was able to make a last min res via the app. I had Blue Chip, but didn't know they offered the counter bypass w/the membership & rental booking. The gal at the counter was so nice and even apologetic after a very "confused" customer before me was not understanding anything and it took longer than it should have to get him on his way. She handled the situation beautifully! After letting me know I could just go straight to the garage to pick up my car, I arrived to find there were not any compacts left. The lady in the garage grabbed the first car that came out of the wash and asked if I wanted it. It was a Kia Optima. I asked if there would be a charge for the upgrade and she said absolutely not since they were out of my rental class. The car was actually really awesome! I was initially worried about fuel efficiency, but this thing was a beast! I put 1200+mi on it and only had to stop for gas 3x with the last stop being to fill up for the return! Also, loved the lane assist feature and the auto highbeam feature, both of which I never experienced before! I returned the car early, and unlike some other rental places where I got penalized for that, I actually got a credit for unused time! Thrifty, you have a new loyal customer! They are not Thrifty they are indulgent with fees. Customer service is atrocious. I called in 3 times to ask for clarifications on the breakdown of my bill and each time, when they are unable to clear up why they are charging me a "service charge" they hang up on me. They never mentioned any additional "service charges" and ended up charging me $370 in "service charges." I prepaid the fuel, turned it in at 3/4 of a tank, and was charged $43.53 for 3.5 gallons of fuel. On top of that they charge nearly $90 as a "concession fee" because the airports charge them to operate near the airport and they pass that on to the consumer. Manager was unapologetic my only option was to go with a 8 passenger vehicle or my money refunded. There were 9 of us i was forced to go with a 8 passenger vehicle and take my personal vehicle as well to accommodate the passenger with no seat. I could not cancel because my air bnb were all paid for. My vacation was almost ruined. Thank God I had a plan B. I only read the reviews the day before pick up. Please don't make the same mistake I did. They don't give a sh#t they will give your vehicle to someone else. Saddest car rental experience of my life. This car rental is horrible. First of all there is no one inside. All transactions have to be done in the garage. It's hot in El Paso!!!!! Long story short the vehicle we requested to rent and prepaid for with our debit card could not be rented to us because we did not use a credit card. We called a family member to use their card and were told we could not do that because the card holder was not on the reservation but was an additional driver and no one working there could not or would not assist us with that. We eventually had to call the customer service number to cancel our prepaid reservation and creat a new reservation so that we could eventually get the rental. Then we were told the vehicle we requested was not available for us, even though there was one there. The manager and the the other employee there could not do anything at all to assist. All they said over and over again was "I'm sorry for that." The manager had no authorization to do anything. The other employee would only direct us to walk across the hot garage to talk to the manger who could never help. I will never rent from them again. Customer service is nonexistet. read more

Sub-mediocre experience as a result of sub-mediocre effort by the staff. Initial greeting The main person that "handled" my reservation was Josh on 8/5. First I had to wait until he/she (I will refer to him as he, though, given his name but he seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about it) decided to stop gossiping and goofing around with another he/she that was in the booth at the garage. Very unprofessional from the start and it continued throughout. Reservation I tried to provide my reservation number but Josh ignored me and simply asked for whatever he wanted at whatever time he wanted. I asked if he wanted to see my id and he said I should instead read it out loud to him. I could've said gibberish and he wouldn't know. He was extremely slow and just dragging his feet for menial things. He would be more interested in continuing whatever gossip he had with the other dude in the booth that was just there doing nothing. Ignorance about rentals Josh was ignorant about what Thrifty allows for crossing into Mexico so he tried to deny the rental. I told him I've rented and crossed to Mexico multiple times before by paying for Mexico insurance and he was still stubborn saying it wasn't possible without checking at all. He said "I'm going to pretend I didn't hear you say that". I asked if there was someone else that I could talk to that knew about it and could even check my rental history and he got really offended I wasn't asking for the manager or anything. I just needed someone competent that would simply check and confirm that what I asked for is possible. He then proceeded to simply do nothing and just hang out talking with his booth buddies as before. Super frustrating. I saw 3 reservations start and be completed by the other person at the other PC. Spreading toxicity While waiting for Josh to do nothing, the couple next to me asked if they could change their reservation there and the attendant very politely agreed. Upon hearing this, Josh intervened and just said "nuh uhh" with attitude not even explaining why with sass like he was on some woke tv show. The other attendant made no effort to continue being helpful after the attitude displayed by Josh. The other couple didn't push their request but it was ridiculous to see Josh block the effort that was being provided by the other attendant. Extra charges At some point, after the other dude that was in the booth left and gossiping stopped, I pushed Josh to tell me what was going on and he magically produced everything that was needed for the reservation AND Mexico insurance. This made it obvious that he was just stalling doing nothing. I told him that I wasn't going to cross into Mexico until a future date so he should set the start date for coverage to match. He simply ignored me and set the coverage to start immediately (note that coverage is about $50 per day). I asked him to fix it and, given the minimal effort displayed so far, he said that was just the contract start date not the coverage start date. It was not - I've done this many times before. I pointed out the exact wording in the doc saying that coverage started immediately and he insisted. I asked how can I check when coverage started and ge said I would need to get pulled over by a police officer and the office would pull up my coverage and check the date. This was beyond stupid. This was after a really long flight and after being "punished" by this moron and being put on timeout for asking if I could speak with someone that knew about my type of rental. All this resulted in me just accepting paying for coverage I didn't need. Feedback I asked the attendant on my way out how I could provide feedback and he said "you can just tell me". I asked how the feedback would be processed and he said he would just listen to it and decide what action to take as he was his buddy. Be WARNED!!!! I had a medical family emergency and had to fly to El Paso to see my dad who was dying. I reserved and booked and prepaid for my car foolishly thinking that this meant I was guaranteed a car. I get to the desk and they tell me they do not have a car for me and that if I wanted to wait three hours at the airport they might be able to help me then. I needed to get to where I was going ASAP asked for a refund so I could go rent another vehicle. I was denied. They said because I pre-paid it went to a third-party and now I am fighting to get my money back. They opened an investigation before they could make a decision. I'm confused what they need to investigate. They admitted they did not give me a car, I told them they did not give me a car and still they need to investigate it before they give me my money back. Beware !!!Nowhere on their paperwork does it say if you You pre-pay they are no longer responsible it goes to a third-party. I am still fighting to try to resolve this. Great interaction with the staff, friendly is the name of the game when it comes to Customer service. I stopped in to grab a car ad leave, we all do that but the check in guy was pretty outgoing and reeled me in for a conversation. He started telling me about the area and really laid it all out accurately I was to find out later. I knew that Thrifty was going to be as it was always at other locations but the problem is I don't think that I have ever given a location 5 stars. My car was ready clean and fast. When I came back to drop off my car this time a lady was there. We talked again as she was pretty interesting and wanted to enhance my drop off experience I could tell. She helped me out by telling me which cabs to take to get back to my destination and the pleasant way that she engaged is my lasting impression. So 9pm on a Monday, no one at the in terminal kiosk with a sign to go out to the garage and see the booth. Problem is 10 min at at the booth and no acknowledgement from anyone in the place at all. They have an employee at the "gate" that you leave from and three in vests that are returning, cleaning, shuttling the cars so it's not their job. But some acknowledgement would be nice. I see a guy in a shirt and tie and he keeps looking at me to no avail. Now the guy from the gate just came over and he's trying to help. He's calling someone to help. He's trying. Went to pick up my RESERVED and PAID FOR vehicle at the El Paso International Airport and was told by the staff that they overbooked and gave my car to someone else. They then dismissively suggested I rent a car from someone else and call the agency and ask for a refund. I will never recommend this company for anyone for anything EVER!!!!!! NO STARS!!!! I had a reservation for 6/9-6/13 pkup for 1:30 pm. Flight landed at 1:45pm. I went to the desk it was closed. There was a sign saying to go to Hertz it was also closed. I called the phone number no one answered and it rolled to a full voicemail. I called corporate line they said I couldn't get a car until the following morning. Basically leaving me stuck at the airport. I called again the next morning (8:17 am) shortly After the office opened at 8 am and no one answered so it rolled over to the full voicemail again. I took Uber there and of course both thrifty and hertz were dark and no one answered phone calls. I am on a very tight budget as Cancer is expensive and Covid shut down my job for awhile. I am in El Paso to spend time with my son before he deploys to a hostile country for a year as well as to visit friends in Amarillo 6 hours away from El Paso, South Padre Island 12 hours away from El Paso, and to celebrate my 50th birthday in Dripping Springs 11 hours away from El Paso . I am unable to continue my plans since I have no car to travel where I need to be. I have also wasted about 5 hours of time I can not get back with my son. No one seems to really care about the inconvenience or the wasted time or that my first vacation in 10 years has been ruined by their thoughtlessness and nonchalant attitude. I did call Priceline in Hopes of getting a quick refund to get a car from a different company but the Funds won't be available until after I leave on Sunday. I'm beyond pissed and am thinking of a lawsuit. read more

The most important thing I can say is DO NOT use this company at least at this airport. Several reasons: 1. Started out, that the car is costing more than the amount shown on my resignation - oh that's because you are getting airline miles, said the clerk. They always do that. Said the airline, it's not our charge, it's the rental company's. At any rate, an extra $10 for reasons we don't understand. 2. Picked up a lovely brand new car -- except the AC was not working. We called the number for on road assistance, and were badly served by a very rude clerk. Finally got through to "Natalie" who arranged for us to go back to the airport and pick up an exchange car. Which turned out to be an older Chevy Impala (12K miles - I had no idea they kept 'em on the road that long) with Tennessee plates. And, as we found out on the road, was very wobbly. NOT happy with Thrifty which, I admit, I chose because it's rate was lower than the others. Guess I know why. read more

My check out experience was great. The staff was courteous and quick and very helpful with directions. Upon return I had to wait in the hot sun to have my car checked then asked to find my already packed away contract. I was finally directed inside where I waited in the blue chips line. Meanwhile the only attendant working took care of all the other non-blue chips customers in line. She finally got around to me and of course asked for the contract as well as the car keys. I informed her the outside attendant had kept the keys. She lightly apologized for making me wait 20 mins and then said oh you could have taken care of all of this outside. I had the most horrid experience with this company and the rental car given to me. My husband and I moved from MD due to the military and we needed a rental Car for a couple of days. I made a Reservation with enterprise but they told Me I had to have a credit card to rent a car so I desperately went to thrifty car rental because they didn't require this. I told the representative that I needed the smallest car they had (assuming it would be a Toyota Yaris or something similar). The man asked if I would fill up the car myself and I said I'm not sure maybe. He said well if You do then you have to bring in a gas receipt in order to not be charged....(uhhh why would I need a gas receipt if the car was filled back up). I picked up the car and was mortified! The car was a 2011 Mitsubishi Mirage that had cracks,dents, and scratches all over it. Also once I turned the car on it sounded like a beat up piece of junk. The whole time I had it I was so afraid it was going to break down and stop working! After about two days my personal vehicle from MD arrived and I rushed to send the piece of junk back. I forgot to fill the tank back up (I only used half a tank). I assumed they would probably charge me a little more than what the average gas price was in the area but I was so wrong! They charged me $9.99 A GALLONNN!!!!! This place is a rip off!!!!! I will tell everyone I know to never rent from them!!! And I just wanted to add that for my three day reservation they were going to charge me 260$!!!! When I rented from hertz in Austin and in MD I rented a brand new Yaris for much less!!!! read more
