Oh, good Lord! I desperately wanted to LOVE Thyme on Section! After having it bookmarked for some time now, I finally corralled the hubs and a friend in for the perfect night for a Fairhope voyage and amazing dinner. Well, clearly that didn't quite go as planned. Follow me now... I called in and made a reservation, and we were promptly seated by the hostess upon arrival. Mary greeted us and made light hearted banter, then took our drink orders! And we were off-- Hubs ordered an Old Fashioned (of course), our friend ordered a muddy martini, and I ordered a Thyme after Thyme-- which was promptly spilled on the table in front of me on delivery. Yep. Mary, who was super sweet and extremely apologetic, gathered the ice, menus, and took the entire (soaked) table cloth away. Cool, and the beat goes on! Mary, promptly returns with a new Thyme after Thyme (great, right?!) carrying either a large fruit fly or gnat of some sort. I call her back, she's mortified and apologizes, and again works on another remake. Yeesh. "Third time's the charm!" My 3rd and final Thyme after Thyme was perfect, and I actually really like the cocktail. Onto the eats... we ordered the pimento cheese queso for a table app, the filet, bistro steak, and the Thyme burger. All came out delicious and unscathed expect mine. I ordered the Thyme burger medium, and it came out over well and slightly dry. I hated to call her back, yet again, but poor Mary agreed. She left me the amazing truffle fries to munch on during the wait, and re-fired the burger. The re-fire was PERFECT, and of course I was "truffle fry wasted" and had to have Mary box it to go after two bites. My friend Kyle at Tongue & Groove recommended Thyme on Section (and I bookmarked it) months ago, so this experience truly broke my heart. I had a rough night of it, but based on the re-makes and re-fires, I know what the quality can be when it's spot on. I'm going to try this again soon, and prayerfully, have a 5-star update. I have lived in a lot of states. I have visited many more. I have eaten at hundreds of different restaurants. I believe Thyme on Section is easily one of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had, and felt so strongly about it that I just had to write a review. I went on a Tuesday night with my mother. It wasn't very busy, but the few people in there and the staff still made it feel lively without it being loud. Every staff member was genuine, caring, and a joy to be around. The interior of the restaurant was lovely, open, and though we were seated next to the bar in a corner by the window, it never once felt claustrophobic, but rather charming in a European eatery way. The drinks were creative and refreshing - I had a "Thyme After Thyme" cocktail, and my mother had a "Goat Island Blood Orange" beer. I don't know much about drinks, but take my word that both were delightful and I look forward to trying more things on the menu in the future. Now for the food. Where to begin? The truffle fries were adorned with just the right amount of truffle and fried to a satisfying crispness that I've never encountered before. The artichoke tart was a remarkably clever appetizer, with each piece of the artichoke cooked to perfection, and the dough complimenting the whole, letting the artichoke take center stage. The salmon was an experience in and of itself - the orzo pasta salad provided a chilled, creamy respite from the smoky tomato sauce over a moist, delicious salmon fillet. And next to it all, roasted zucchini rested on a splash of tzatziki. The halibut was extraordinary, and the best way I can describe it is the scene in Ratatouille when Anton Ego first bites into the Ratatouille and flashes back to his childhood's warm, comforting, and delicious food. A supremely delicate fish fillet resting on a soul-warming broth and bed of vegetables (and more artichoke!). And lastly, dessert. The flourless chocolate tart achieved a level of creaminess and a texture that just loves you, and a deeply rich chocolate flavor. When you're in the American South, you MUST order peach cobbler - them's the rules. This is the best peach cobbler I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Do yourself a favor and try it. Let it be known that we finished every crumb of every meal, save for the chocolate tart that we took home and finished later. The portions were well-thought-out without being too light or too overbearing. I cannot recommend Thyme on Section enough. Every part of this place was so impressive, and it never felt like it was trying to be. The lovely atmosphere, lovely people, delicious and very smart menu, and tasty drinks are all encoded into the place's identity. I look forward to becoming a regular. read more

I ate here with my husband and his mom for lunch. We ordered the prime rib sandwich, the fish tacos, and the gyro. The tacos and gyro were delicious. The prime rib was good, but needed a few alterations (the bread needed to be toasted a bit, there was a piece of pure fat, and it came lukewarm). They were slammed, so the service was pretty slow. Yesterday was my first time at Thyme since they moved to Section Street. I really thought I'd miss the lovely view of the Bay, but I was so wrapped up in how aesthetically pleasing the new atmosphere is, I never even thought about it. The new place had plenty of natural sunlight sweeping in, rustic wood-look flooring, a brick wall spanning one side of the room, ceramic vases with cotton stalks on the dark wood tables and beautiful water glasses. Did I mention the enormous bar on the opposite side of the room? The new location is delightful! The food is still equally delightful. I can't tell you that I tried anything new. Honestly, when I find something I love, I tend to stick with it. I ordered the grilled pimento cheese sandwich with apples and bacon and a side of truffle fries. It was every bit as flavorful and delicious as always. (Check my first updated review of the place for the yummy description). Seriously, it's one of my favorite meals ever and this is the only place on earth to get it. My hubs had the gyro, and it too was as phenomenal as always. We stoped in Thyme to grab a drink while waiting on our reservations at another restaurant. I ordered an extra dirty martini and it was the best martini I have ever had! I love the food at Thyme at section and can't wait to go back. My first time there, I ate a blt salmon sandwich with truffle fries. It was my favorite and the salmon was cooked perfectly. I was disappointed that it was no longer on the menu during my second visit but I decided to get the Pho "rench" dip sandwich. It was just as good and had so much flavor. This'll be short and sweet because you can't argue with perfection. I was grabbing lunch for my crew of six, including myself, and the staff could not have been nicer, more patient or helpful. Fantastic service and then that food by God... Their menu is apparently seasonal - which you can't beat - and at the bottom there's a bit of text without a description that simply says, "Chef's Special." I'll tell you now, it was a winner. The Special was a perfectly prepared B.E.L.T. -yes folks, this BLT had a runny egg in it - on sourdough bread w/ avacado spread & truffle aioli and a side of truffle fries. Everyone absolutely loved their food but to keep it simple I've focused on mine. We loved that place and I'm sure that any one of us would return if we're back in these parts again. read more

Man oh man we had a good thyme and delicious food at Thyme! Bad jokes aside, the food was amazing. They make all their sauces in house and they know what they're doing! The taziki sauce on the gyro was out of this world, the gyro itself had soooo much flavor. I upgraded to a side of truffle fries, again not a bad choice. The fries were good, but the sauce put them on the next level. Their salads are also very good. I have a feeling that this is one of those places that you can't really go wrong with what you pick off the menu. We walked in and sat at the bar. No problem not being greeted for 15 min. We understand it's hard to keep staff. Once we were greeted AT THE BAR , they asked if someone seated us. We were standing on Section Street when we saw the word Thyme. Thinking about the word automatically brought up visions of flavor and aroma. After all, thyme is cultivated around the world for its dried leaves and flowering tops. This place is really cute and quaint, but the food was mediocre. The salad on the brunch menu did not have enough pecans, cranberries, or dressing. I was essentially served a bowl of dry lettuce. Everything else we ordered was decent, and the hot food was served very hot. I do have serious concerns about the cleanliness of this restaurant. I sat at the bar and watched the wait staff handle credit cards, serve food, mix drinks, and handle lemons and garnishes without ever washing their hands. In fact, the sink behind the bar was being used for storage; it wasn't even operational. I even watched one waitress cough all over her hands and then continue serving people without stopping to wash up. They literally were so loud and made so much noise that my evening was ruined. I have never heard so much noise in a restaurant in my life. it really is an imposition to be subjected to such poor behavior. Decided to eat at Thyme on Section this week after hearing really nice reviews. It's a quaint restaurant that is decorated very avante garde. Really nicely done. I sat in the bar at a table, and the bartender served me. Ordered a glass of the Butter Chardonnay and a glass of water. She came over to serve my wine while she was on the phone....I had a question, but she was busy holding a conversation. Kinda rude and not a great start. I just got a feeling about my service that I was about to be disappointed. So, when she came back to take my order, I asked for a recommendation between the Thyme Burger and the Lamb Dip. She informed me that she had never had the Lamb Dip....she didn't eat at the restaurant....only took it home?!? Really? The food will be the shining star, but I would expect better professionalism at a restaurant that is such haute cuisine. If you are going to work at an establishment, at leT sample the menu so that you know what you are taking about when someone asks a question about the menu. Lordy....serving 101. I ordered the soup which was a Tomato Feta, Lamb Dip, and Truffle Fries. Sounds like an incredible lunch. The soup came, and it was delicious. Really rich and flavorful...I have a feeling that the food will compensate for any server deficiencies. Lamb Dip was wonderful, and the Truffle Fries were outstanding. Excellent job!!! Really fantastic food with less than average service. I would have loved to have given Thyme on the Bay 5 stars, but the service gets a knock. Recommended. Tried Thyme again, and I had a great experience. Ordered the Thyme Burger, medium rare, and a cup of the tomato bisque. Burger was absolutely wonderful. WhT a great burger. Highly recommended. Small, but artfully crafted menu with fresh salads and sandwiches. At least 3 vegetarian items on the current menu (which changes periodically as I understand). I requested the waiter's preference and ordered the sweet potato, poblano tacos and blueberry-peach side salad. The tacos came with savory grilled onions and peppers with a vibrant salsa verde that enhanced the hearty richness of the sweet potato. Amazing! The summer fruit complemented the vinaigrette perfectly. My only complaint is when restaurants don't toss the salads with dressing before plating. read more

We have been coming here for years when we visit the area and it never disappoints. This was the first time we've dined in the new location in downtown and were slightly apprehensive since some restaurants suffer when they move locations. Not this one!! We came in for lunch in a Thursday. My wife had the Thyme burger with a side salad. Everything was cooked perfectly and the salad was wonderful. I ordered the Korean Beef sandwich with fries which was excellent. The sauce on the sandwich is divine. We are coming back for dinner! This restaurant is good enough to go out of your way to come to if your drying around the coast. read more

I really like this restaurant. On one hand it can be completely unpretentious, on the other hand, you'll find dishes that are extremely ambitious. Thyme has arguably the best burger in town. Same thing with their french fries. They have a truffle fry option that knocks it out of the park. Interesting cocktails too. read more

We went for our first dinner trip to the new Thyme (formerly By the Bay) on Section last night, and my excitement and anticipation for the new location was definitely warranted. The new location has a much larger seating capacity, and they've done a wonderful job with the interior. Including the bar, their capacity is right around 60, with beautiful rustic dark wood tables and banquettes around the wall. The tables are close, more bistro style, and they still kept the cotton in vases on each table, which was a nice nod to their table arrangements from the old location. On to food and drinks -- they have an actual bar now, so the options for imbibing has dramatically increased. I opted for the thyme after thyme cocktail -- which had gin, lemon, thyme infused honey and ginger beer. It was tasty but I feel like it needed a little more oomph -- a little more citrus or ginger to give it a bit more tang and/or spice. For our first course we decided to sample a few of the snacks (pickle jar, pork confit toast, and cheese curds) We were happy with all 3, but I think the pork confit toast was our favorite, although the cheese curds were perfectly fried. The pickles were nice, with a lighter pickling than I expected, but it was a nice counterpoint to the richness of the toast and cheese. For our second round, we decided on the stuffed peppers and the pork belly & oyster apps. Holy moly both of these were delicious, but the pork belly and oyster appetizer hit it out of the park. All 3 of us think it was some of the most tender and juicy pork belly we have ever had, you barely had to chew at all because it would just melt in your mouth. Once again, the oysters were perfectly lightly battered and fried. Definitely our favorite of our two first courses. For entrees -- my husband opted for the pasta special (in lieu of the ravioli entree which they didn't have that night), our friend got the pork belly burger, and I got the pork cheeks with spaetzle. Pasta special -- house made tagliatelle noodles with sautéed shrimp in a black truffle butter sauce -- simple, yet rich and delicious. You can't go wrong with any of their homemade pasta dishes. Pork belly burger -- one of the juiciest most flavorful burgers I've tasted! It is a mixture of beef and pork belly, and to kick it up a notch, a whole piece of pork belly on top of the burger itself, as well as aged cheddar, smoked pickled onion, seeded mustard, accompanied by their generous portion of truffle fries (with a heavenly garlic rosemary aioli dipping sauce) Pork cheeks -- I think I was the clear winner of the 3 entree choices, honestly. I swear any time you have a slow cooked meat option at Thyme, you should take it. Adrian and Rachael KNOW how to make slow cooking proteins work in the best way possible. My pork cheeks came with house made mustard spaetzle , mushroom ragout, crispy kale, beer jam glaze, and dill creme fresh. My whole dish just makes the angels sing when you taste all the components together. All in all we had a spectacular first dinner at Thyme on Section, and can't wait to come back for lunch and brunch options as well. Do yourself a favor and try them out.
