We came here for Mother's Day dinner and it was a lovely experience - delicious tapas, excellent service, softly lit ambience. We recently went to Barcelona so we were really excited to go to a highly rated tapas restaurant in the states. The five of us ordered almost the entire menu, and the four tapas you MUST get are the following: (As in, if you don't get these four, you're missing out.) 1) Squid in ink with rice - This is the best dish here, hands down. We got two. The white rice soaks up the squid ink juice for a mouthful of umami. Comforting and bursting with flavor and texture. You must get this dish! 2) Plato de embutidos - jamon, chorizo, iberico ham plate that comes with tomato bread. I was obsessed with jamon iberico ham in Barcelona and this plate stands up to snuff in terms of taste, but not the quantity ;) A plate for like $10 USD in Barcelona will get you way more iberico than you've ever thought you'd eat (equivalent to 4 of these plates), whereas this one disappears in two bites! High quality though, so if you've never had iberico ham (and really, if you're not going to Spain anytime soon) definitely get this, and probably get two. The tomato bread with garlic here is also a Spanish tapas staple and it's amazing here. 3) Anchovies with olives - if you like that strong burst of fishiness, you can't go wrong with these anchovies. 4) Cockles in white wine and garlic - cockles are small, saltwater clams and these were particularly juicy. Soak their complimentary bread in this juice and eat!! OK, those four dishes above were MUST gets. If you're looking for more to fill up on, the following dishes were pretty good: 5) Skirt steak special - this is a little bit more substantive than the other really small tapas dishes, and the skirt steak surprised me in it's pleasant chewiness, perfectly medium rare. 6) Patatas bravas - these are potatoes with aioli and paprika, a very typical tapas dish. These were great, and I always order patatas bravas at any tapas spot. 7) Chorizo - very very smokey. Deceptively small dish, but it's heavy and very flavorful. These were passable and I wouldn't get them again: 8) Ham & cheese Croquettes - pretty standard one-bite croquettes but nothing to write home about. 9) Crispy marinated fish - these kept falling apart as the breading was too soft and thin and fish was too crumbly. 10) Shrimp in olive oil with garlic and chili - this was very passable and felt like something I could whip up in a few minutes at home. Inevitably, it's a little hard to get full on tapas, so order what you think looks good (like the first 4 in this list), then order your favorites again. As with all tapas, maximize your chance to taste many different dishes by going with a big group. For us, it only turned out to be $40 per person, and we got to try almost the entire menu. Small but quaint, this tapas restaurant is great. The wine selection is stellar and true to regions in Spain. So those pair well with the food. Cute, narrow tapas bar in Chelsea. The front room is very charming but can't sit many people - I came here for dinner with my family (party of 4), and they sat us in the spacious back room. We eat a lot and ordered quite a few things on the menu: Very good: crispy artichoke salad (even my teenage little brother, who barely eats a vegetable, admitted this was good), patatas bravas, shishito peppers, ham croquettes, grilled octopus, chorizo, gambas al ajillo Okay: serrano ham, pan con tomate, lamb skewers No: crispy fish with lemon [this is a bunch of tiny little fish, which tasted dry and over-fried] Service was okay, although there was a long gap (like... 35 minutes) towards the end of our meal where no food came out, and then we suddenly got the last few items we ordered all at once. A cute tapa place! We reserved a table for 7:30pm and were seated promptly. Our table was in a separate smaller room in the back but the waiters/waitresses came check on us regularly throughout the dinner. We ordered blistered green peppers with sea salt, serrano ham triangles with artichokes and manchego cheese, chorizo cooked in sherry and rosemary, 18-month aged serrano ham, fried chickpeas with pimenton, deviled eggs with smoked paprika. The foods were overall good but a bit salty. I personally love salty foods so it wasn't a problem. Special shout outs to the green peppers and chorizo! Came here after New York Fashion Week show. Day was incredibly cold, we did not want to walk too far - the location was just perfect. It's amazingly cozy, even at the bar. We settled in the nook right by storefront window and ordered wine - and from the start, I give them props for perfectly chilling it to right temperature. Crisp, clean, light glass of white was exactly what I needed. Menu is extensive, and true to tapas traditions. I seriously wanted to try everything. There are specials on the board by the bar too, check them out! Here is what we tried: Marcona Almonds - nice, light, and completely different from regular almonds. I freaking miss Spain now. Gildas - Anchovies, Peppers & Olives skewers. Delish. They had me at anchovies - need I say more?? Ham & Cheese croquettes - soft and warm inside, crisp on outside, bite-sized heaven on a plate. Lastly, we had Garbanzos Fritos - excellent snack to indulge during conversation. Did you guess where am I going with all this? Going back for more, obviously! Some of the best red sangria....ever. Surprising. I don't know why but, I didn't this little hole in the wall would be capable. And when I say hole in the wall, I mean it really is. There's a bar with about 7 or 8 stools and maybe 4 small round tables. Boom. Done. Terminado. The tapas weren't so bad either. My friend and I went with the must have at any tapas place sizzling garlic shrimp (gambas) along with an artichoke wrapped in ham, trout wrapped in ham and the octopus salad. All were extremely tasty and pretty solid portion size. My favorites being the trout which was a small filet with a piece of deep red, freshly cut serano ham on top and some arugula type greens and the octopus salad with sliced potatoes and onions and a light vinaigrette. The other dishes were solid. I found again that buttery ham overpowered the minced artichoke in that dish. The shrimp was nothing crazy though I think I order that dish at every tapas place I've ever been to so it has to be pretty stellar to stick out. On a recent visit to Tia Pol, we were not able to get a table. But tonight, the stars were aligned, we got lucky. And although my dining companion was over 25 minutes late, the hostess was still gracious enough to hold our table despite a growing line. Now that is customer service. Perhaps in my past life I was a Spaniard, or perhaps I just enjoy the concept of "tapas." Small plates of delicious, delicate food meant for sharing. I have never been a person who enjoys eating a full meal. I am one of those people that eat all day long. I guess I am a "snackatarian." So naturally, tapas would appeal to my eating habits. Besides, eating is always more enjoyable if you can try a variety of dishes and share with friends and family. Tia Pol is a narrow restaurant with a decent sized bar that can seat about 6 people. Adjacent to the bar, people can stand and have a drink while waiting for a table. I was one of those people leaning on the wall ledge, madly texting my friend who was late, and enjoying an "agua de Valencia." This consists of cava, vodka and OJ. A screwdriver spritzer. It was pretty strong and I knew I was in for a night of trouble. After my good friend arrived, we were immediately led to our table in the back. The back seating area looks completely different than the front. If you are trying to achieve a romantic mood, I suggest waiting for a table in the front. Luckily, we wanted to catch up and chat, so the rustic back room was perfect with the communal tables and low volume. We had much to celebrate and also much to share, so a bottle of wine was in order. My friend traveled in Spain extensively during his college years and even worked in a winery in Penedes, Cataluna. So when he spotted a bottle on the list from that region, it was a sure shoe-in choice, except the waiter sent the sommelier to visit our table. And when she arrived, she explained that the wine was oaky with hints of fruit and extremely light-bodied. Those are all the characteristics I enjoy in a wine, so we ordered the Cabernet Franc, 2006, Penedes, Cataluna. A truly great wine that had both of us in bliss. We ordered up the following tapas: 1. Pimientos estilo gernika - Green peppers roasted with a hint of sea salt. This tastes almost exactly like the ones I had in Malaga. 2. Croquetas del dia - Nice to have croquetas minus the meat, filled with red pepper. And besides, my friend is a vegetarian and I wanted him to also enjoy the food. 3. Lengua a la plancha -This is veal tongue with pickled red onion on toasted baguette. I was being selfish and environmentally unfriendly here and had to try these. Absolutely delicious and I highly recommend it unless you are of the herbivore family. Tasty without the chewiness. 4. Almendras marconas - Spanish almonds. We needed this soak up the wine. By the end of the evening, my head was swimming in red wine, good conversation and melancholia. My friend will be leaving for the West Coast this week and this will probably be the last time I see him for a long while. But he looks happy to leave. I never could fathom how his hippy self even survived this long in New York. But to enjoy our last meal together at Tia Pol for a long time to come will be a memory that will stay with us, in our hearts and in our minds. read more

Celebrating a recent promotion, a good friend and I recently visited Tia Pol for a gorging and drinking fest of truly gluttonous scale. A couple of bottles of vino later, I hastily jotted down some notes of that night's menu into my Blackberry, as a few more drinks and I wouldn't even remember how to get home to my apartment. Our gorge fest included: Octopus terrine - A loosely compacted 'loaf' of tentacles, it had been gently cooked and seasoned, giving it a very pure octopus flavor and delicate texture. A must have if you like octopus. Squid w/ its own ink over rice - A recommendation that came with high regards from our waiter. Unfortunately, the flavors were flat and totally uninteresting. Gummy white rice was drowned in a pool of black squid ink sauce. In the mercifully low lighting, the plate looked like a trainwreck. Gambas - The beauty is in the simplicity of these jumbo crustaceans, as well as the tasty juice that's sucked out of the head, and Tia Pol did them justice. Peekytoe crab salad - Served over simply grilled bread, it was one of the top dishes of the night. Very generous with the crab meat and very clean flavors. One thing to note with crab is that medium quality crab can be a little muddy tasting. I have to emphasize that the flavor of this crab was clean and bright, with a slight spike of acidity to bring it all together. Again, another dish where a good quality ingredient shines through. Patatas bravas - A necessity for soaking up some of the wine. They're good here, but a good patatas bravas is a veritable commodity amongst the various Spanish tapas joints. Lamb Skewers - I unfairly compared these to the $1 skewers that you'd get in Chinatown, but I felt like they weren't worth ordering again. Good, but nothing to write home about. Razor clams and cockles in a wine/butter/shallot sauce - Although my stomach was at the point of bursting, we ordered a side of bread to sop up every last remaining bit of bi-valve scented butter sauce. Along with the crab salad, it's something I would order again in a heart beat. I think there was a charcuterie platter somewhere in the mix. Must not have been memorable enough to note in this review. As others have noted, the wait here can be a bit long during popular evenings (which is pretty much every night). But fret not, the wines are an excellent time killer. And if you're a bottle into the meal before you even sit down like we were, then you're certainly in for a delicious evening. read more

My dance girlfriends and I decided to pick a place for dinner and drinks one night after class. We wanted an establishment with good wine and small plates to share. Being the Yelper of the group, it was my task to find such a restaurant. I came upon Tia Pol on Yelp and showed its excellent reviews to the female only jury. You can probably assume by now that we did, in fact, go there for our meal. Being a Thursday night around 8:30, Tia Pol was annoyingly crowded when we came from the studio. As there were no tables available, we decided to grab the last few seats at the bar closest to the front door. In hindsight, that was a pretty stupid decision as it was freezing cold. This was made worse whenever someone opened the door as it let in an icy blast of frigid air. So word to the wise, avoid sitting at the front of the bar during the winter. I got sick the following day with a horrible cold that lasted a week! Oh well, the things I do for food. *pushes Bran out the window* For drinks, I ordered a glass of Spanish red wine to warm up my insides. I was still chilled to the bone from the pouring rain outside and this red helped nullify the numb sensations in my fingers and toes. The bartender was nice enough to let us each sample some wines and sangria before committing to a glass. We then ordered a few tapas to soothe our growling tummies: -Patatas Bravas: rough cut potatoes with spicy aioli. I love aioli (who doesn't?). And spicy aioli? Don't get me started. The creamy sauce was the perfect compliment to the hearty baked potatoes wedges that were slightly crisp on the edges. After devouring our first order in 5 minutes, we promptly ordered a second. Do yourself a favor and just order 2-3 dishes when you sit down. You'll love it. -Croquetas de jamon: ham croquettes. Crispy on the outside, hammy on the inside. Nothing particularly memorable about these but that doesn't mean they were bad. They just didn't have a wow factor. -Pinchos morunos: lamb skewers with Moorish spices. I thought these were okay. A little chewy but they had a nice flavor to them with a spice I couldn't play. Tarragon? Cumin? Who knows. -Gambas al ajillo: shrimp in olive oil with garlic and chili. These came in a little clay pot fresh from the oven. I had to wait a few minutes to eat one lest I burn my tongue. These were yummy as well. I could have sworn there was some white wine in the liquid they came in but maybe my taste buds were fooling me. -Boquerones en vinagre pol: marinated white anchovies with caspe olives. I really loved this dish which we ordered at the very end of the night as I was still hungry. Even though they said they were anchovies they tasted meatier like a sardine and SOOO big! I love them and this is a fantastic must have dish if you love sardines/anchovies. The marinade was zesty and the olives paired perfectly with the lightness of the sweet meat. With drinks and food, it wasn't a cheap dinner by any means but it was a lovely meal that the three of us highly enjoyed. Honestly this place has gone way downhill in terms of overall experience. The food is still pretty solid and is the only reason I'm giving two stars still because the experiences I've had recently have been fairly laughable. I have been coming here for five or six years. I have recommended it to hundreds of people over that time. I have stopped. -The dishes are changing seemingly to save money. An example is the razor clams and cockles are now just cockles in garlic sauce. So, half a dish. -the reservation policy continually changes, and the staff (also a revolving door) have zero idea what it is. They used to never take reservations. Then they only took them for the back bar. Now they take them for the main dining room. Sometimes. Other times, the staff can't tell you what the policy is. Today, I called to ask about a table for two. I was put on hold, then picked up with a very confused "um, hello?" I asked for availability for a table for two. Hold again. Then "um, hello Tia pol." Asked for a table for two. Hold again. "Hello". I literally think I could have been on candid camera. Use to love this place. Now it's kind of a joke. Wish they did take out so I could at least enjoy some patatas bravas without having to deal with the circus that has become the staff here. Sad... read more

I've been on a hiatus, but after eating @ Tia Pol, I felt compelled to review on YELP. The tapas were succulent! I'm not a big fan of lamb, mostly because to me it tastes like meat that has gone bad, but every once in a while, since I am always willing to give things another chance, I will order it. But the lamb skewers @ Tia Pol changed my view on lamb forever, that is how good it was. Cooked to a tender perfection and marinated in a habanero/lime type sauce and served in french bread that has soaked up this delicious concoction of sauces, I almost couldn't believe that I was eating lamb. Tia Pol is seriously small, but the food is superb. I think it is better as a date/one other friend type of place, vs. a group place not only because the plates are small, but also because of the mood lighting and the intimate ambiance. As with most over reviewed places in New York, I think it's best to go on a random night - Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Sunday - I find it extremely pleasurable to not have to fight with people for a table or feel rushed or be extremely hungry when I am having an epicurean experience. read more

Tia Pol, a tiny slip of a tapas bar located on the western reaches of Chelsea was opened in July 2004 by two friends who spent time in Madrid and wanted to bring a taste of tapas back to NYC. This place is more innovative than your average tapas bar - the menu features regional Spanish dishes from all over the country. Catalonia is represented, as is the Basque Country, Galicia, Jerez - they're all here. Croquettes and juicy slices of chorizo are delicious and the wine list is well-chosen and diverse. If you like dry Sherry, now is your chance to experiment. They have a great selection of the Lustau sherries and the staff are always eager to discuss your beverage choices. Do NOT miss out on the INCREDIBLE fried chickpeas. Simply deep fried and then tossed in paprika and sea salt, these little crunchy/creamy nuggets are so addictively tasty! I love tapas and Tia Pol is probably one of the best in NY. I wish they had a location on the East Side so, I didn't have to travel to Chelsea but the food, drinks, and service are worth it. Tia Pol is a great date spot, or girls night out place, and you can even rent out the back room if you want that can fit around 20 people. If it's just 2 people I think 5/6 dishes would be the best. You might order more than that because the dishes are pretty small and are gone pretty quickly. I've only been here twice so I don't know the menu that well but make sure to try some of their specials! I ordered their asparagus special last time I was here. I wish they had the specials on a chalkboard or piece of paper with their price next to it because it seems like all the specials are a little more than the regular items. I also ordered their squid ink on rice and octopus salad. Everything was so tasty! I actually came here as a pre-dinner snack and if I stayed longer for a full dinner we probably would've ordered 3 more dishes. Their wine list is amazing. I don't think you could go wrong with any of it. The people who work there are also very knowledgable. The best time in my opinion to come here though is for happy hour! if you're with a small group you can just sit at the bar and relax. They have a great deal with sangria, wines, and beers. For each drink you get you also get a tiny tapa to go along with it. I was in the area and had a few minutes to spare and Tia Pol was the best option. Dana F. and I are the best of food friends. Prior to seeing "A Matter of Taste" at the Tribeca Film Fest, we wanted to have a nice girl's night out dinner. Dana chose Tia Pol since it wasn't far from the theater and we would be eating early enough where we shouldn't have to wait for a table. (The don't really take reservations except for large parties). Ordered: jamon croquettas pimientos estilo gernika (small mild green peppers) almejas al vino (clams) ensaladita de pulpo con patata (octopus & potato salad) wild ramps a la plancha (special) duck heart skewer (special) leche frita fruta al vino (pear for the evening) Everything moves quite quickly at Tia Pol (probably to turn over their few few tables as quickly as possible). We didn't feel rushed, but we also didn't feel like it was possible to dine leisurely. Every dish we had was much too salty, with the exception of dessert. Even the vegetable tapas were coated in sea salt! Unfortunately, the dishes failed to wow me - or even go "yum!" They were all okay - the flavors were okay, the freshness was okay, and nothing managed to stand out. Portions wise, I feel that Tia Pol is a little skimpier than most (two girls plowed through eight dishes and I think we could have kept going if we hadn't drank a gallon of water at that point). Dessert was also okay. My pear was much more wine-like than I imagined and Dana's leche frita had a good crunch but an interior consistency that wasn't as creamy as we expected. The food was okay overall, but considering how long most people wait for a table, how packed the space is, and the fact that you'll drop at least $40, I would tell you that you can skip it. read more

Just meh. I found the service and food just okay. We had reservations and they sat us at a crappy table next to all the sidewalk foot traffic, despite there only being one other party in outdoor seating. We moved ourselves. Three separate waiters tended to our table, two guys and one girl. Both guys were extremely rude and one literally just plopped the plates on our table for us to decipher who ordered what! Then the same guy brought out one desert and walked off, never mentioning the status of the second desert we ordered! The shrimp in olive oil was lackluster and actually bitter, and some things were down right overpriced liked $10 for some bread with tomato and olive tapenade! First started with the fried artichoke salad, went onto pumpkin croquettes, ham and manchego cheese, devilled eggs and for dessert a pumpkin flan! REALLY awesome tapas place, had a great time here for dinner. I was worried about how "spanish" the menu was (typical spanish tapas can be meh) but this turned out to be probably one of my favorite meals I've had recently. Each dish is between $4-8 for a small, which gives you enough for two people to have a few bites each. Some have larger portions which doubles what you get. We were able to create our own "tasting menu" with 12 courses for about $70 a person and tried about half the menu. They charge a hefty price for their special menu since people don't usually ask the price of the item. - One piece of fried soft shell crab on bread $22 - A couple slices of skirt steak with a load of potatoes $35 Too expensive!!! My boyfriend and I came here for our Anniversary and were a bit baffled. As we arrived we were greeted by what seemed to be a stressed out and sort of rude hostess. We had a reservation but didn't like the table she gave us because I'd be cold. My boyfriend requested a table in the back room as seen in pictures but we were turned down but saw her seat a 2 top in there moments later. She rudely asked us to grab our own waters and cutlery when moving us to a table closer to the back while explaining the restaurant isn't big. We did not enjoy her service at all. On the other hand, the food was great, I have no complaints with that part. The cocktails were pretty slamming as well. From the outside, it's a tiny dimly lit galley bar flanked with red trim with doors that open completely to the outside. On any given night, this place is crammed and seating is limited! There's a back room with a dinning table reserved for large parties. The wait for a table can be agonizingly long, anywhere between 45 minutes to even an hour. Reservation only for parties of six or more. But Tia Pol houses the best tapas in the city and well worth the wait. Service is friendly and the staff is very helpful in their recommendations. Some things to try are the stuffed sweet peppers, squid in ink and rice, and lamb skewers. The bottle of red wine that our waiter recommended was excellent... try the Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses Priorat. Can be a very expensive meal but they are very good quality tapas. read more

** 1,000 review ** Everything about Tia Pol is a-ok to good. It was some of the better tapas I've had in New York City at New York City price and portions. At first, I was excited that my group of five was seated in the back, for there's more space. However, we were seated at a long table, and by being at the end, I missed about of the conversation. That's also because the music was playing on the louder side. I was also not impressed with the lack of décor. When I think of tapas, I think of "fun fare" and expected a little bit more on the walls. My friends and I ordered so many yummy dishes. You have to get the artichoke salad. The dressing is heavy, but it's lemony goodness. (Maybe ask to go light on the dressing?) The fried chickpeas were also unique and worth checking out. I also liked the squid ink dish, but there weren't many pieces of squid, and the pieces were on the smaller side. (But, yummm, ink!) The fava bean spread was nice and subtle as well. Lastly, we also got the almond cake and custard ball desserts. Both were pretty good, but I wasn't totally blown away by either of them. I'd recommend the custard balls (4 in a order) over the almond cake, I think. Unfortunately, the evening ended with my friend's Tia Pol gift card not being accepted because it incorrectly came up as having no balance. (You'd think that if the card had already been used that the restaurant would have kept the card, right?) The manager was apologetic, but the event unavoidably soured the experience. I had a fantastic late lunch with my son after a freezing couple of hours at Chelsea Piers a few blocks away hacking balls over the Hudson River. The tapas were the absolute most authentic and best I've had in this country - no holes barred on the rich, robust seasonings and ample doses of garlic. The top of the list was the bocadillo de buttifara - a sandwich on crusty bread of catalan pork sausage, carmalized onions, tetilla cheese, and mustard ... And the selection of sherrys by the glass over the top especially the super sweet special reserve (can't recall the name) which was like raisin syrup.. Ended with an equally syruppy double espresso. Great way to spend a very cold afternoon in the city. Looking forward to returning in the evening sometime and revisit the friendly and professional staff. read more

Good quality of food. Plates are too small for what you pay for similar restaurants in the area and similar Spanish restaurants. Their menu lacks churros as a dessert. They include a mandatory 18% tip (N), and we were only a group of 4. They didn't tell this ahead neither the waiter gave us a heads-up when handing the bill. I'd not come back again, and the trick of the tip was sneaky, trying to get double tipping on top of the already included one. read more
