A cute little place. Great servers and bartender. Delicious food. As we walked in, the place was not particularly crowded. We wanted to just get drinks and enjoy the atmosphere. The bartender seated us near the kitchen. We ordered a bottle of wine and our server, Arturo, brought us a menu as well. We checked out the menu and everything sounded delicious. We weren't hungry but watching the chef in the kitchen and the tasty aroma changed our mind. Arturo came by and took our order for the shrimp in garlic sauvet. We had a five-star experience at Tia Pol last weekend. The service was superb, the atmosphere warm and intimate, and the food phenomenal. We started with the crispy artichoke and asparagus salad. Wow, wow, wow. This dish exceeded all of our expectations. It was full of freshness and flavor. For tapas we loved their ham croquetas (best croquetas in NYC) and the serrano ham triangles. We ordered two of their specials as our more hearty dishes. A delicious short-rib noodle dish that was rich with flavor, and tender lamb meatballs that melted in your mouth. We ended with fried custard balls with tart cherries. It was sublime! Some of the best Spanish tapas in the city! A super cozy place down in Chelsea, perfect for lunch with friends or a nice date night. The food was amazing! We tried an assortment of plates including the patatas bravas which is a popular dish in Barcelona. It had great flavoring from the paprika and aioli and came out piping hot. Really good! Ham croquetas - comes in 2 or 4, depending on the size you order. Really well made. Good crunch on the outside and super creamy and hammy on the inside. I really enjoyed the bite. Serrano ham triangles - just as good. Serrano was fresh and had good flavor. Squid Ink Rice - very popular dish. We got two order split between 5 girls. Lots of squid. The flavoring was mild but really good with rice. Chicken liver mousse - Loved it but I love chicken liver mousse so might be bias. They were plenty on each crostini. Super flavorful. We recently went here for brunch and had higher expectations. While the food was good, it wasn't amazing. We felt like we paid alot for how much food we got, even though we knew it was tapas. I wouldn't recommend the chorizo it came very salty and dry, but the patatas bravas and the montadito de crema de habitas (not pictured) were very delicious. Excellent!! The closest thing to a Madid neighborhood / "de toda la vida" bar that I've found in NYC. I ducked in recently (alone) for an early/small dinner (lomo/pork sandwich, an Alhambra beer, and a Torta de Santiago / almond cake), a few minutes too late for their happy hour menu, and thus, their calamari sandwich (next time). Quality food at a reasonable price, nice décor/cozy atmosphere, great service (I was immediately waited on by one of the owners and then by a couple of the waitstaff), and very clean (restroom included). Perfect place to bring a date or for a small group lunch/dinner (cool back/group room). Bonus points for the small shelf that runs along the wall across from the bar (where I moved to after having started eating at one of the high tables / once the table reservation had been filled), a small detail, but it made me feel like I was back in Madrid. The oil was bland and in need of salt. They served bread alongside it that was cold as well. I would not recommend. Pan con tomate- another Spanish dish that's so easy which was also not done well. Bread was cold and hard - too much tomato & not enough olive oil, garlic & salt which is traditionally how this dish is made. Another miss. Wouldn't waste the calories on this. Chorizó & grilled octopus special - this was surprisingly good. I would recommend this. The octopus was cooked perfectly - not chewy & the chorizo was flavorful. Great combo. I couldn't understand how this was so good yet they missed the mark on so many other menu items. Ham croquet- these were bomb - super crispy and yummy on the inside. Squid ink rice - lacking flavor. Ok but not great. Not necessarily recommend. Patatas Bravas- another disappointment. Generally, these are served with a more tomato based mayo and these were topped with too much Mayo & paprika. Not worth it. Overall, service was good & our waitress was nice. We ate outside. If you're looking to have a pitcher of sangria with croquets & some chorizo this could be a good spot but if you're looking for authentic Spanish food and/or tapas this is not the place. Interior is very dimly lit and music is just a bit louder to be considered as ambience music. Called to make a reservation for 2 on a Friday night but the hostess said to just walk in. I was told that there's always 'walk in tables' so no worries. Arrived around 7:30pm to findout there's 45 min wait. Not what I was expecting. Luckily, we were able to grab seats for 2 at the bar which was fine. Hostess was nice enough to ask the people at the bar to shift seats so that we can take 2 stools. It's great that the bar seats are also full service for food. They carry a selection of wines and very little beer and a friendly bartender. Ordered house Rose which was crisp and refreshing and some tapas out of the menu. Food orders are placed thru the bartender. Ordered squid, chorizo, potatoes, fried garbanzo beans and mussels, etc. We were given bread then small plates started coming out. I had a difficult time figuring out what was what as the inside of the restaurant is quite dark. Chorizo was very salty but other items were decent, nothing stood out that was very good or impressive. If you are driving in, there is a parking garage just around the corner. Maybe she was "concerned" about giving two gay men a table. Of course, as I do with all dumps, I left wishing her a very happy hour! My displeasure with this "lady wasn't that I couldn't sit at a table during the $2.00 discounted happy hour, rather her nasty, unwelcoming manner. For a "tapas" bar that supposedly had its nascency in the travels through ALL OF SPAIN, it was clear to me the two "ladies" learned nothing from their travels on how Spanish treat tapas patrons. My first time back in about 5 years but it was as I remembered it, except possibly busier? We used to come here often for brunch or a lazy mid-afternoon glass of wine. Food, drinks and atmosphere were still the same. All good with a great energetic neighborhood vibe. Only glitch was we were seated in the back room to share a table w/a party of 6. As we were leisurely drinking and conversing, most of our plates still more than half full, but we were told that we would have to give up our seats for another reservation. As many places in nyc now have time limits on their tables, we understood and our waiter was kind enough to hold a couple of seats at the bar for us to move to, where we stayed happily for the next couple of hours. This is a pretty good place for tapas, probably the best compared to previous places I've been to. We started out with the tortilla española (traditional spanish omelet with potatoes), which was pretty tasty. Then we had the croquetas de jamón y croqueta del día (ham croquettes and croquette of the day) which was just alright for me. Then the pimientos estilo gernika (blistered green peppers with sea salt) which was quite delicious, and not spicy. The chanquetes en adobo (crispy marinated fish with lemon) was just okay, nothing special. The pan con tomate y tres salsas (grilled and garlic-rubbed baguette with tomato and three sauces) were okay, but one of the sauces, made of red peppers, made it delicious. The paquetitos de jamón (serrano ham triangles with artichokes and manchego cheese) were just alright. The patatas bravas (rough-cut potatoes with spicy aioli) was pretty tasty. So was the bocata de lomo adobado (grilled pork loin, piquillo, and tetilla cheese sandwich). We finished with three desserts: torta de santiago (spanish almond cake with dulce de leche and vanilla ice cream), flan de tia pol (classic flan), and leche frita (basque-style fried custard with drunken cherries). My favorite was the flan, followed by the leche frita, maybe because of the drunken cherries. The torta was alright. The service was good, but I didn't like having to sit at the bar. With a kitchen the size of a postage stamp, at least half the menu seems like items that are pre-made and refrigerated. That being said, the salad with tuna and olives was fresh and delicious. An octopus salad could have used more octopus, and more flavor. Pan con tomate was heavy and pedestrian, and paled besides Mercado Little Spain's version, in which the bread just crackles and the tomato sings. Sigh. A mussels special came with a satisfyingly spicy chorizo broth. The patatas bravas were impossible to stop eating. The chicken liver mousse a little too sweet. Service was attentive and professional, but the bar stools are hard and placed very close together, with nowhere to hang your pocketbook. On the downside, I didn't enjoy the patatas bravas because they were too heavily drenched with mayonnaise. Since we had a reservation, we were seated in the back room which has two communal tables and seats with backs. I don't think the dining experience would be as relaxing if I had to sit on a stool, but the back room was lovely. My friend was running late and they were nice about not giving our table away.
