Heath Ceramics in Sausalito is a personal favorite of mine: a design focused retail destination…read morefeaturing Heath pottery, decorative homewares, and iconic ceramic tiles. Founded in 1948 by visionary ceramicist Edith Heath, the brand is an icon of California modern design. The items here are undeniably expensive, but the timeless design and constantly updating of color palettes make each piece feel special. In 2003, the company was revitalized by husband-and-wife product design and business team, who thoughtfully reinvented the brand. Heath is a great example of how with a good steward, classic design can be successfully revived and made modern. I find Heath to be a good spot for finding special design focused gifts.

I stopped by today, with my mom, to buy my sister some gifts for her wedding. I loved the new colors I saw - they had some yellow bowls and bulb vases that I was seriously tempted to buy, in addition to the other items. What I didn't love was the lack of customer service. I don't expect or want to be waited on hand and foot, but a simple acknowledgement would have been nice, rather than having multiple employees just watching us the entire time. I ended up purchasing from the seconds section and buying less than anticipated due to the overall vibe. I try to be understanding, and perhaps something was off for them today. Regardless, I was so uncomfortable in the store that I waited outside while our items were gift wrapped.

We were dealing with ugly bathroom tiles and a big hole in the wall. I contacted three contractors…read moreand all three were comparable in pricing. One contractor didn't make a site visit. Another contractor couldn't start until two weeks later. Alex made a site visit and was very personable. With the lead time, we chose Alex. Right when we chose him, he wanted to start that day! I said OK. That afternoon the demolition began. In two weeks he completed the job. He will work around your schedule. We had a family incident and needed to push back the work a day. We also had to wait a few days for the faucet to be delivered. The hours are up to you. We were OK with his team working into the late evening to get the job done because we were down a bathroom. Vitali and Alex work really really hard and long hours. There were some up sale items, but we picked which ones we wanted. Our vanity was in bad shape; so we updated the vanity, sink, backsplash and faucet. Alex quoted us a great price and offered to do tile flooring which would have made the bathroom even nicer, but we decided that the flooring would be fine. Maybe save that for the next remodel. Going through any type of remodel or home update is emotional and risky. We did a home remodel years back and that's when we learned you can really only choose two of the three: quality, cost, or speed. With Alex we were able to get close to all three. Obviously your home is very dear, and there are small little things that you can sweat over. Your home will never be perfect. Not a year goes by without some work that needs to be done to my home. Things get old and break down. There are many things that I would do over, but everyday I go into my newly updated bathroom and smile.

The entire project took about a week. I recently had Alex do the tile backsplash in my kitchen. Again, beautifully done and took 4 visits. Alex is extremely response, helpful, and accommodating, and his prices are reasonable. I will always go to Alex for my tiling needs!

Noe…read moregave a prompt response and scheduled me within a couple weeks for shower grout and floor grout. Noe and Maria arrived on time and did a beautiful job on the shower regrout and Noe even accommodated some last minute requests to add caulking in the kitchen and quarter round. Unfortunately, we had different ideas about what grout 'touch-ups' meant for the floors - I wanted a few spots regrouted to match the rest of the flooring's grout color - but it really lacked a professional touch and didn't look good at all. I did invite Noe to come back to redo it, and it still did not meet the professional standard I paid for. I would have appreciated more thorough communication from the start to make sure I was getting what I needed. To be honest, this was not the cheapest quote I got but paid more because of the great reviews. I would be happy to change my review to 5 stars if the team wants to come back for a full regrout on the floors, but I'm not planning to pay any more than I already have. I'll attach some pictures of the beautiful shower and subpar floor grout job.

The rain was coming and I had a leak- so I was hoping Noe could come by and do a Quick Look & see…read moreif he could figure out the leak. He did! He did a seal and when the rain came and went the leak did not happen! Now we know where to address when we have more time and sunshine. Also had him check out my front steps that seem to need to be re-grouted - he pointed out white water marks coming out from the tiles is a sign of water getting in behind so he went tile by tile to figure out how many are loose. I look forward to his bid for service for spring project as he does great work so I feel like I will get a good deal and a great job well done.

She's not only incredibly knowledgeable about Italics' selections, but she also takes the time to understand your vision and offer thoughtful suggestions that elevate the entire design process. Cynitha has helped me source everything from statement pieces to subtle accents, always with patience, creativity, and an impeccable eye for detail. Her responsiveness and genuine care make her such a standout. I can't recommend her enough to anyone looking for support on high-end design projects -- she's the best! I will continue to go to Italics repeatedly because of Cynthia!

She gave me exactly 5 minutes of her time and had a rude demeanor. I'm truly surprised others has a good experience with her. Follow up note for Jon- I scheduled the appointment almost a week ahead, I asked for a time slot and she replied she was open from 10-3pm and didn't give me a time. Then I told her I was aiming for 1pm and I never got a response back. Even if I did arrive early, I wouldn't have been so upset had she been kind and asked me to wait. Plus there was no other customer in the store. She wasn't kind, she was rude. Her lunch arrived as I was leaving. She was clearly unprepared. I don't doubt her ability but her demeanor is not the best presentation for your business.

My experience with Fireclay Tile was deeply disappointing. I used these tiles for a Master bathroom…read moreproject, I bought matte subway tiles so nothing complicated in regards to shape or layouts. The tiles I received were so misshapen and inconsistent that my installer -- a seasoned professional whose entire career is focused on tile work -- had to spend nearly twice the normal amount of time recutting and adjusting them just to make them usable. The glazing defects were deeply concerning. Fireclay, including the CEO who I spoke to directly, attributes these issues to the handmade nature of their products, referring to them as "crazing," which involves visible cracks in the glaze and is presented as normal by this company. Within the first 90 days, I had to replace more than 10 tiles due to this defect. Fireclay has indicated that this "crazing" is related to the recycled materials used in their tiles, trying to normalize it. At this price point better consistency and quality control should be expected in glazing formulas, inconsistent ingredients are why they are unable to make this right.. Cracks in tiles--especially those used in wet areas--are not normal and should not be dismissed as acceptable. Many tiles also broke throughout project due to uneven edges and brittle spots. Handmade should mean high craftsmanship, not unpredictable sizing, warping, and defects. My installer was shocked by the poor quality and described these as the worst tiles he has worked with in terms of shape, size, and durability. He even noted that basic Home Depot tiles would have performed better. Fireclay shifted to a money-driven, direct-to-consumer business model years ago when they were in a turnaround period ( check out the many articles that the CEO released) . While selling directly to consumers is not inherently an issue--these are subway tiles, and they should not be difficult to install--but the reality is very different. Even when following Fireclay's specifications precisely, the tiles' warping, defects, and extreme inconsistency made installation unusually difficult. This was true even for a certified professional with decades of experience. In the end, the tiles look acceptable only because of the significant extra labor required which led to double the cost, as well as the overage material I had to purchase to ensure I could keep up with the breakage . Over the three years they've been installed in my bathroom, I've continued to replace tiles that cracked due to "crazing." What should have been a premium experience turned into an expensive, exhausting ordeal. I would not recommend Fireclay Tile to anyone expecting consistent quality, durability, or transparent guidance.

This has been a huge inconvenience. Wish we had known this when choosing Fireclay. In the future, we will take our business elsewhere.
