This place needs to close down and start over again. Seriously. I don't even know where to start. I gave it three tries...ordering different things off the menu each visit, to make sure it wasn't just a fluke the first time. But every time, without fail, the food was horrendously bad. The cheeseburger meat tasted like cardboard, was cold, tough, and gray, even though I ordered it done medium. The Italian dishes were just awful. The flank steak was tasteless. And the list goes on. Ok, I really appreciate that Timberwood brings a neighborhood style atmosphere to north 29. This is a great place to watch the game with a beer and burger. The service is always good, and the people are genuine. Why am I giving it a 2 star rating? Well, there are items on their menu that are simply not acceptable. For example, the enchiladas. They were delivered cold. With three toppings, none of which belong on an enchilada. One of these toppings was actually marinara sauce typically used for shrimp (I think -- or it was some bizarre Italian sauce that absolutely should not touch an enchilada!) In contrast, the burger is solid, and the Durango salad is fresh and nourishing. Maybe they are just extending themselves on the entrees in a way that the chef is simply not comfortable? read more

My husband and I stopped for lunch on a Friday. We ordered wings. My husband ordered the crazy hot wings and absolutely loved them! He said they had a good heat and great taste. I had regular buffalo and they were cooked perfectly. My husband had the Clint Eastwood and said it was delicious. He would definitely get everything again. I had the coastal combo: grilled cheese with crab-very good and the crab bisque-very tasty, but I would have liked a little more chunks of crab. Our server, Russ, was friendly and efficient. Dropping my review because I was really dissapointed last Friday. This has been...for me the best place to get a solid lunch and a good beer for a long time. But, something is wrong with the staff training...and if Steve is still part owner and reading this...you should really do something about it. I brought growlers to have filled while here. I own my own growlers and have taken all the brand names off of them because I get growlers filled all over the region...I repeat, I get growlers filled even in other states and never have an issue. I got with the bartender to review the tap beers before sitting down to a booth. I explained I was looking to take some full growers with me which she acted as if this was no problem. When I began to discuss prices (I was carrying quart growlers this day...never a problem...anywhere, they are just filled two at the price of a regular large 64oz) the bartender got a bit more confusing, telling me that if I were filling one of their growlers, the price would be "X". I asked if that changed filling my own growlers, and she couldn't be sure. I asked for her to check with management. She also ended up being my server at my booth and seemed to forget about me and may have even been aggravated with me when I tried to signal to get her attention. I repeat, I had to signal to get her attention after waiting patiently for a very reasonable time. I ordered a beer sampler and a burger. As far as the food, the burger was not as good as I remember them being, but it was OK...just OK. The bartender/server completely ignored me on the growler fill issue. I observed and it looked like the manager may have not even wanted to deal with it. I didn't press the issue...if Timberwood doesn't want to sell more per table seated, that's their problem and I probably wont be back, at least for a long time. I tipped my normal 20% because that's how I am. I pay my bill, vote with my feet in the future and Yelp my experiences. This was not smart, even for the lazy bartender and manager (the place WAS NOT full, so that is no excuse), because not only did this experience change my recommendations to others in person and my Yelp review status, but I would have also tipped that 20% on the value of my filled growlers even though I was just carrying out! For some reason this server/bartender/manager didn't see the need to take care of the customer. You never know who you are dealing with in a customer, and good service pays off with me. I dont like being ignored and I had guests coming to my home that night and I wanted some special beer to serve, and had planned to get that at Timberwood. Since my last review, we have visited a few more times and have really been impressed with each visit. It seems that there is a big distinction between eating at the bar or the restaurant (I would now definitely recommend the restaurant). The burgers here are incredible - you can even order Polyface beef! Try the Big Fat Greek Burger! Timberwood has three main areas: 1) The dining area - a nice, quiet dining area that has plenty of table, booths, and access to TVs. Perfect for a nice family get together or a date. 2) The bar area - equipped with a gigantic bar (with ample amounts of bar seats), gigantic TVs, as well as plenty of tables and booths. 3) The patio area - plenty of outdoor patio tables, comfortable chairs (that are perfectly located away from the smoking area), umbrellas, and exciting lighting - the perfect getaway on a nice summer day All three areas are magnificent in both their layout as well as surrounding decor. If you are looking for great food, Timberwood has the perfect menu for whatever you are craving. Burgers, exclusive sandwiches, exciting salads, and even employee created concoctions that are sure to make you smile. My personal favorite is their fish tacos - I have to say they are some of the best I've had the chance to eat in Charlottesville. My hats off to their kitchen staff, I've never had a meal that was anything less than stellar here. Their beer menu is extremely extensive. Whether you like IPAs, lagers, stouts, ales, etc... The list goes on and on. You can mix and match with their "mini-samplers" to find just what you are looking for, or if you are looking to try a bit of everything! Their hosts/hostesses have always greeted me (and everyone I've ever seen) with a huge smile. They like to engage in short conversation to make you feel at home. They usually get pretty busy most nights (especially Friday's and Saturday's) around dinner time (5pm-6pm), however they have plenty of seating so wait time (at least in my experience) has never been so long that I've wanted to select another option for dinner location. The waiters and waitresses here always get excellent tips from me. For the most part, I attempt to try new foods from their menus regularly, and the wait staff has excellent taste (as they love the food they serve as well), and have never steered me wrong as far as suggestions go. I've been to Timberwood many times since it's close to work and people love to have happy hours here. It's mostly the location, because a lot of people live in the area (Northern Albemarle or Greene County). What does Timberwood REALLY have to offer? On a positive note, there is the outdoor seating, the 3-sided full bar, and the beer selection. Let's get real here. The outdoor seating is really only good for half of the year--when it's not freezing cold outside. For the other half, it has to either be not blazing hot and muggy (good luck in central VA) or the evening. The latter isn't much of an option, unless you live directly in the vicinity of the area and don't have children--most people in the area do. This leaves us with about 10 weeks of good solid outdoor nice time or so. Even then, the service tends to be shoddy outdoors as the wait staff tend to neglect the outside groups when the dinner crowd arrives. The bar is nice, but it doesn't suit groups of 5 or more very well. It takes up most of the room on that side of the restaurant, forcing the group to split up in to tables/booths of 4, killing your mingling abilities with the rest of the group. My typical work happy hours range from 10-20 on any given week. There is a wide variety of beer selection, but you're going to pay for it. They charge an extra dollar for my favorite, Allagash White, than Miller's Downtown does. If I remember correctly, there aren't very many happy hour beer specials. I've honestly tried to find something good about this place, but I just cannot understand why people want to keep going back. I've tried the steak, which is mediocre at best, the fish tacos, which were dry and tortillas uncooked, the crispy duck, which was soggy and tiny when it finally arrived, and several sandwiches from the lunch menu. I've had the burgers once or twice, and they're really nothing special. I refuse to get them on the principal that 1) they're overpriced, and 2) there are a million other burger places that WILL DO a better job (Five Guys). As far as happy hours go, you're much better off at Bonefish or Sakura. If you're feeling adventurous, head downtown and enjoy the variety. read more

Best outdoor seating restaurant outside of downtown! I have eaten there several times, and I am always pleased. They have a nice brunch menu (great Mimosa's too!) and interesting daily specials. Last weekend we went in and my husband had their daily special, shark. I usually choose the Santa Fe burger (which they no longer have listed on the menu but are always willing to make it!) and if I want something different, I opt for the filet mignon or the crab-stuffed tilapia. My favorite part about Timberwood is the atmosphere. They have a great bar area and always have good beers on tap. It's my favorite place to catch the games on Sundays. read more

My wife and I love Timberwood Grill and have dined here many times over the years, even though there are lots of popular restaurants nearby. The reason: consistently excellent food and service at a reasonable price. We stopped here on Friday afternoon, May 21st and, like always, food and service were great. My wife had crab bisque and a sesame ginger tuna salad. I had crab dip and the Crazy Jane salad with sautéed shrimp. Both of our appetizers and salads were spot on. I have mixed emotions about this place. I do eat here semi-frequently since it is close to home. I think I'll just have to list some likes and dislikes. LIKES - decent american grill kind of menu - great selection of craft beers (best in this part of town, probably biggest selling point) - outside dining is enjoyable with friends in the summer - fried calamari appetizer always goes well with my beer :) - bar areas has several TVs if you like to keep an eye on the game DISLIKES - seems slightly mismanaged visit after visit - it's weird. I always feel like it could be great, but most visits end up being so-so - rumors about kitchen cleanliness issues - area parents often do poor job controlling their over-active children I probably eat here more frequently than you would think given my marginal opinion about the place. I think I eat here mostly due to the location and convenience and the fact that I sometimes want a nice craft beer with my meal. read more

I'm a local, and this place is one of my favorites in the area. It was one of the first ones that I visited when moving here, and it continues to be just as impressive every time that I go. The food is great, the prices are cheap, and there's literally a book full of beer choices - from local stuff to your international rare imports. Their bar section is sizable and they have plenty of TVs throughout that can be changed to whatever you want. It's a great place to come have a pint and watch your sport of choice after work/on the weekend. The drink prices are reasonable, as well, and their bartenders are knowledgeable on all of the best beers in their selection. In addition to the bar area, they also have a formal dining room, as well as an outdoor seating area, that are both good for groups/friendly to kiddos. I have taken my kids there, and it's a great dining experience. Additionally, as I said before, the prices are more than reasonable for a family night out. Overall, I'd definitely recommend it! I had heard mixed reviews about this place from numerous people I know, it's located on the northern part of Charlottesville which isn't somewhere I typically go (considering I live in town), but I finally decided to venture out there to give it a shot. I have to say, it's not at all what we expected! The atmosphere isn't like other restaurants in Charlottesville, it's wide open, the bar would be great for watching sports they have lots of big TVs, and they have a huge patio! When we got there it was quite busy for a Wednesday, we waited for a minute for the host but there was a line ahead of us so we decided to sit at the bar. The bartender was busy but told us that she'd be right with us, she gave us dinner menus, and a beer menu that was fantastic! We both ordered a beer, I had a pork tenderloin that was on the specials menu that the bartender recommended, and my boyfriend had the Flank Steak entree. The food ran a little long, but we were content with our beers, and the bartender brought us bread to start with.. (the honey butter was delicious!) When the food came the presentation of both dishes were great, and were really very good for a casual restaurant, and at fair prices. The mixed reviews we have heard have been all about the service. Sometimes it's great, or it's awful. We were fortunate to have a great first visit, our bartender was very attentive and friendly, and apologetic about the food running long. She told us her name but cannot remember, she was blonde and knew a lot about the menu when we asked her questions, and was able to recommend a craft beer for each of us that we both loved. She was busy but took the time to help us decide on what to order since we had never been there before. We will definitely be back to visit in the near future, but worry that we might be disappointed if the service really isn't consistent. This is the best casual dining/place to get a beer that we have been to in a while. We didn't go in with high expectations at all, but pleasantly surprised. Came here with my friend for restaurant week and we were both kind of surprised. This place is a good 20 minute drive away from UVA, closer to the airport. It really feels like a family neighborhood restaurant, which is pretty different from the usual Restaurant Week vibes we find. The Restaurant Week '16 deal was actually great here though -- almost all of the dishes on the RW menu are on the regular menu, so you could see how much of a bargain it was. Everything was pretty tasty and for entrees we got the Steak Frites and some chicken tortilla chip salad. Tabletops were sticky, but it felt like being back at home or something, so my friend and I didn't mind and thought it was a funny experience. I don't think we'd come back, but it was fun to try for RW! Looked a bit expensive for what you get on the regular menu, but overall had a good time. read more

I love Timberwood. The food is excellent, the prices are not bad (comparable to Chili's or Applebee's), and they seat quickly. I try not to go at peak times, like Friday at 6, and have never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a table. Usually there is no wait at all, a rarity in this town. The service CAN be spotty if you sit outside, but I feel that this is the case at most restaurants with outdoor seating. Yes, you can only use it maybe 10 weeks a year in Central VA. It is one of the few places not downtown with outdoor seating and that keeps me coming back in summer evenings so I can bring my dog. Football on Sundays tends to pack out the bar and back room so expect some spillover noise in the main dining room. The beer menu is extensive and the people I eat with are frequently excited about this. I am not a huge beer person but can always find one on the menu that is new to me and delicious. I have never had a bad thing to eat but some things are terrific. I always end up with TS Effkats unaffected beauty and it is the perfect sandwich, as the menu states. The chocolate cake is to die for, super rich, fudgy, and a huge portion. Killer French fries, too. The menu changes fairly often, but they either leave the old favorites on or keep the ingredients so they can make them if asked. I have never gotten a burger, though my friends and family always do and say the off beat burgers are the thing to get. If you want something beefy or more exciting than the perfect turkey sandwich, go the burger. read more

Extensive beer list, charming and comfortable summer patio, and well-crafted sandwiches, salads, burgers, and more. Always packed, so call ahead for reservations. As far as other posts go, calling this a Chili's/TGI Friday's/Applebees type restaurant, I tend to disagree. The vibe here is much more refined, staff is more attentive, and the food is more local and appealing, even if the menus offer similar types of food. read more

This place is usually our go to place. I actually argue with my family because I never want to go anywhere else. Tonight, after church, my boys wanted to take me out to dinner for Father's Day, so instead of the vast array of places I could have chosen, I chose the Timberwood. I have been there well over 70 times - two times this past week... 65 of those times were good to excellent, but tonight was one of the five times I could not have walked away more disappointed. The meals were oversold from a description point of view and from the perspective of the wait staff as well. The Pastafather, which was supposed to be "huge" pasta dish bathed in olive oil and parmesan was actually approx. 50 pieces of penne with sliced dry chicken on top floating in onion water. i had to request parmesan, which was provided in a tiny dressing cup. In addition, the Chicken parmesan, that was again sold as "very large" by the waitress, came with a 2 oz piece of cheese covered chicken. To the manager's credit, another piece of chicken was brought out for the parmesan meal, but only due to our complaint. Beyond the food, the coffee was see through water, the cream floated on top of the see through water, the seltzer was never refilled, and the wait staff was not on their game whatsoever In fact, of late the wait staff has been detached although they are hyperactive with their continuous inquiries. On Friday, when I was there for a late lunch, the waiter hovered over us to close out our ticket because his shift was ending. We, as a result did not order the $40.00 of desserts that we typically order. Perhaps some training could eliminate this from happening again in the future, so the restaurant does not lose sales. Overall, I am almost apologetic in posting this Yelp, but I am because phone calls I have made in the past did not yield change. It is my hope to give the Timberwood another try in the future, but, in truth, in may be a while before I do so. read more

This has been a favorite place for us to meet friends since we first visited. Beer selection is always impressive, including locals brews as well as a selection of the not-so-ordinary. My beer loving friend and I always find something to fit our mood, from Dark and Stout, to Light and Crisp. The food is always a treat, my wife and I are pescetarian, and love the veggie-burger swap option on their menu. I always go with the Clint Eastwood (with fried onions and slaw), while she likes the Happy Gilmore and it's fried jalapenos. Staff is far from experienced though, and sometimes the wait to even find the host/hostess is excessive, and patience to get food ordered is occasionally required.
