Me no Espanol damsel but i certainly know how Mexican food looks and tastes. Tried the Veggie Empanadas and Chicken fajitas. The two stars are only for the chicken n the super hot salsa!!! The refried beans were so overly cooked that they looked like a dirty n weird looking paste. Ewwwww!!! Always remember the mantra for success: "Presentation talks to the customer"!!!! U can never win a customer with a poor presentation n weird looking dirty food. That being said, i didnt have the courage to order anythng else coz it just spoiled my mood!!!! Tio's is an above average restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor. We attended on a Monday for a weekly trivia contest at 7:30pm. I ordered a chicken burrito, which was $10. Compared to other Mexican restaurants I've eaten at, it turned out to be good. The rice, beans, and chicken in the burrito were all cooked well and had some good flavor. However, the burrito did not go above and beyond to impress me into giving 5 stars. I would like to return to try other items on the menu to see if their other menu items are more impressive. read more

Tios is among one of the worst late night places in Ann Arbor. I first tried it many years ago as a freshman. In my 10 years in Ann Arbor, I have tried it every few years to see if it is as bad as I remember. It is. I haven't found anything on the menu yet that is really good. The beans are horribly salty. Almost inedible. I don't eat meat, but the chicken always looks like cat food to me. It is also way over priced. Don't bother eating there, and don't be tempted by the late night delivery. We're new in AA, just moved from Northern California, and although I had been warned that we would be disappointed in the Mexican food here, we figured those "Best of Ann Arbor" plaques in the window wouldn't lie. Oh but they did. The only good thing I ate was their extra hot salsa. But even that couldn't save the chicken enchilada plate. I took one bite each of the rice and beans (I'd never seen beans that color before!), and ate exactly one of the three enchiladas, simply because I was hungry. Those were the blandest, driest enchiladas I have ever tasted, and I grew up in Indiana, which isn't exactly known for Mexican cuisine! Tios Mexican Cafe is simply the best the area has to offer in terms of Tex-Mex Cafes. Tios is not trying to be a stuffy sit-down restaurant with 100% authentic Mexican food, nor should it. It is a different type of restaurant and one that has quite the following--for good reasons, too; the prices are fair, the service is great, and the food is quite good. I'm vegetarian and am often pressed to find good Mexican food that I can eat. Tios offers plenty of options, and is always willing to make exceptions, exclusions, or additions. I am also lactose-intolerant, which makes Mexican dining even MORE complicated, but Tios, again, accommodates. And I can trust that their food is homemade... quite unlike Taco Bell or some of the other horrors Tios has been compared to. Additionally, I'm surprised to see that people think the prices here are steep. Perhaps this stems from the fact that I've lived in Massachusetts, where my local Mexican restaurant charged twice as much money for half as much food. Whatever the reason, I'm confident that I get my money's worth. read more

The best chips I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant, hands down. Kind of disappointing that you have to order them and they're not free like at most restaurants, but their quality makes up for it. Their quest was so creamy and the Sangria is so sweet and tasty. Get the churros as well and you won't be disappointed (be sure to ask for a side of caramel with them too). The Tacos Authenticos were phenomenal because they had fresh cilantro and real corn tortillas. That's hard to find in a lot of Mexican restaurants. We also tried the Queso and Bean dip as well as all flavors of their salsa. The bartender was extremely friendly and had a lot of funny stories, even mentioning that he dressed up like Buddy the Elf for Halloween and had to wear yellow tights :). The Chef came out to talk to us for a while and was really nice too. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was nice. When I first drove by I wondered if it would be similar to the "Qdoba Cafeteria Style" that seems to be popular with a lot of restaurants now, but was happy to find out it was nicely decorated and had a full bar. I'm an a2 local and I really wanted to love this place. I had the nearly tasteless tacos, preceded by significantly worse than grocery store chips and tomato puree (seriously) "salsa" (which doesn't come with the meal - you need to pay extra) washed down by the small glass with lots of ice, overly sweet sangria. My wife's margarita was even sweeter. The guacamole and attempt at hotter salsa we ordered to have with our enter arrived just as we were finishing.They have a good location, and used to have a good reputation. My boyfriend and I went to Tio's before a concert on Sunday night. He had eaten there in the past; I had not, but I'm always down for Mexican goodness. Here's the breakdown: The good: Our waiter was very attentive and kind. We ordered the guacamole, which was made tableside and DELICIOUS. The chips that we ordered were fresh and hot, and tasty,as was the pico de gallo that came with the chips. The restaurant apparently had a makeover since the last time my boyfriend had dined there - he was impressed with the changes, and said it was much nicer than the last time he had been there. The bad: We had to pay for our chips and salsa - kind of a bummer, when you spend $40 for dinner, with no alcohol. I ordered the steak chimichanga, which was mostly comprised of refried beans and rice - good, but I would have preferred more steak, cheese, etc. Also, the mild salsa that came with the chips was completely flavorless, so we asked for some hot sauce. Our waiter brought over 6 different kinds of hot sauce - all, apparently, bought at Marshall's (the tags were still on the bottles). One of the Marshall's tags was blocking the warning label that the sauce was so hot, it only suggested putting on one drop. My boyfriend missed the warning and put several drops on his food, causing him to burn his mouth really badly. I don't believe this is the restaurant's fault, but maybe the removal of the Marshall's sticker so people would see the warning would be a good thing (and lend a little more authenticity to the restaurant). Let me start by saying I think the recipes are stolen from Taco Bell. Deserving less than a 3 star, I give then the three star for the 5lb nachos. When I am board I love to order this, then walk down the street with them. The first person to hold up a sign for money or ask me for a handout gets a handful of nachos. I got the tacos authenticos which were decent but nothing special--one can find better, cheaper tacos elsewhere in town. Their cocktails look better than their food, so I would come again for that. Our waitress, Abby M., was terrible. She gave us the wrong food, was very unfriendly, and spilled my drink on me (which i understand happens) but she did not apologize. Definitely the worst "Mexican" food I've ever had. I got two tacos there one night and was shocked that that alone cost me something like $9. I would not be surprised if the hard shells they used were the Ortega kind you get in a box from the grocery store. The beef was completely unpalatable, and as I recall, the lettuce was wilted. I had a hard time finishing both of them, but felt that I should because of the money I had just wasted. I don't understand why Tio's has so many "Best Mexican Restaurant" awards. Maybe the people doing the voting had never tasted Mexican food before? Never have I ever been this disrespected by an individual or an establishment in my life. My boyfriend and I were up late studying and decided to order delivery to East Quadrangle in Ann Arbor. We saw online that Tio's offers late night delivery and decided to order food. Initially, ordering went smoothly, and the man on the phone seemed friendly. We ordered a lot of food, including enchiladas, quesadillas, empanadas, and a flan, so we did not expect the food for at least 45 minutes. However, after an hour had passed, we decided to call to check in and see where our food was. To our surprise, the man on the phone informed us that the food had already been delivered and picked up by two girls in front of the building. We were annoyed to say the least, as we had given the delivery driver the name "Dylan", which presumably neither of the girls responded to, and a phone number to call when the delivery driver got to the door. After realizing the issue, the man on the phone quickly apologized for the mishap, and offered to remake the food and deliver it to us in 15 minutes. He then told us they were out of flan, presumably because the girls who had stolen our order got the last piece. He seemed genuinely apologetic on the phone though, so we did not think much of it and waited for our food again. When the delivery driver arrived, he made some rather surprising comments. He informed us that the restaurant believed that we knew the girls who had taken the order, and had called to pretend that we were unaware of them taking the order, essentially to get free food. My boyfriend told the driver that this was frankly ridiculous, and the driver responded that Tio's actually wanted the driver to come into the dorm room, a restricted area to students only, and check to see if the girls who had stolen the order were in the room. Tio's actually believed that we had manipulated them into believing that we did not know where the food was, simply to get more food. When I heard about this, I became extremely frustrated. I could not believe that a restaurant could actually believe that customers would create a scheme of this nature to get free food. I am led to believe that because my boyfriend and I are college students, that this is an example of age discrimination, as quite frankly I can not see a restaurant criminalizing older adults in this fashion. Since I was so upset, I decided to call the restaurant and voice my anger. When I spoke to the man on the phone, at first he said "I don't know why you are yelling at me, I am just the bartender", to which I said, "can u pass this information along to the manager then." He then told me that he is in fact the manager, and that he is sorry the situation was treated this way. I have a hard time believing this however, considering he had dishonestly apologized the first time, only to attack us behind our backs. It's safe to say I will never eat or order from Tio's again, and recommend that all youth and/or University of Michigan students do the same, as this behavior towards college age students is simply unacceptable and disgraceful. read more

We went for take out. This was the most terrible Mexican restaurant I have eaten in since a kid. The 12 inch chimi was only 6 inches, but not only was it small it tasted terrible. We each tried a different meat variation, pork, chicken, bean, and they were all bad. Stay away unless you have been without food for more than several months! They have various flavors! I personally don't have any recommendations for which "tastes" best... Tacos: I can't quite remember which tacos qualify for their taco Tuesdays...I think it was the American taco or something. You choose your type of meat (chicken, pork, carne asada). It was like $1.50ish. I got two and it didn't fill me at all. The size of the taco is decent...I just eat a lot. One of the worst Mexican restaurants I've been to. Store bought tortilla chips, and they charge you for chips and salsa. Salsa has absolutely no flavor. Tacos look bad and taste worse, super small with no flavor. Tres leches is a glass of trifle made with store bought short cake, coconut milk, and commercial whip cream. The only thing eatable was my Mexican meatball sandwich, I was told they make their own bread, but I found a hair in the bread. Everything was over priced too. read more
