From almost day one, we agreed we'd save up to celebrate our anniversary here, since the price point is a bit steep. We made a reservation, and the day came with pouring rain. We ran over, soaked but excited. The person we assumed was the host greeted us kindly and said they'd do something special once we mentioned the anniversary. The whole restaurant was full and everyone, guests and staff, were all watching the World Cup projected on the wall, which we honestly loved. That kind of community energy, everyone coming together over the game, is genuinely a great vibe. The problem was there was only one server for the entire floor, and it took 15 minutes for anyone to approach our table, in a restaurant that isn't even large. Meanwhile, the host and chef stood by the door watching the game, seemingly unbothered by the one employee trying to manage a full room. We eventually asked the host if we should just order at the bar since we'd been waiting so long. Our server finally came over, was warm and kind, and got our order out quickly, but every interaction after that felt rushed because all the pressure of the room was on them alone. We never received anything "special" like we were told we would, which honestly would've been fine either way, but overall the night had this feeling of carelessness in the experience. We ate, paid, and left not long after. Honestly this isn't a knock on the laid back energy of the place, we loved that part. It's more that for a restaurant this highly rated and this pricey, we wanted the experience to feel like it matched the price point, especially on a night we'd specifically saved up for. That's on us too for not checking out the vibe beforehand instead of building a big occasion around it. We just don't get to treat ourselves to places like this often, so we were really excited to experience the food and atmosphere everyone raves about, and it didn't quite land the way we hoped. Anyways, giving this four stars because obviously the food was great, and our server was clearly overwhelmed, not careless, so I have high hopes they'd shine on a different night. Just something to keep in mind if you're planning a specifically special occasion here to maybe rethink it and choose this for a fun Friday with friends instead.

I got spice in both of mine and one with mango and another with mango and passion fruit. Would come back again just for the margs. The dessert nachos were so good and pretty and such a unique idea for a dessert I loved it. The "chips" are coated with cinnamon and sugar and it comes with ice cream and fruit and chocolate. So fun to eat it too. I got the cheesy potato bites and they were delicious as well. Very flavorful and the sauce was great. Service was okay but could've been a bit better. We asked for no chili in one drink and no bananas in the nachos but they still gave us those things.

I told our server this when she asked if it was our first time dining here and she found it similarly puzzling. That said, this sentiment is one rarely expressed these days, as Saint Julivert's longevity puts it in what I'd imagine to be an exclusive, highly coveted class of restaurants that have stood the test of time in the face of changing trends, the pandemic, rent, etc. And perhaps more importantly, it has stood the test of time *and* maintained its high level of execution and quality. Saint Julivert is a neighborhood spot as memorable as it is unassuming. We came here at around 7:30pm on a Saturday night. I live quite far from Saint Julivert which is the main reason I hadn't gotten here before this past weekend. Luckily, a friend who recently moved to the area was having a party, describing the offered fare as "drinks and light bites" -- code for "not sufficient for dinner" and an opportunity to find a fun restaurant nearby to try beforehand. Walking up to Saint Julivert was a bit of a thrill for me -- both because of how long it's been on my radar and also because it's nestled on a block that otherwise seems completely residential. The space itself is much smaller than I imagined, very cozy, friendly, and down to earth. We had, in my opinion, one of the best seats in the house, which was a pair of high tops by the kitchen with loads of space for folks (read: us) who like to order a bunch of smaller plates to share. To start, we got a round of cocktails. I had to go with the Kanpai Martini (vodka, gin, shochu, cap corse, guindilla), as I pretty much always start with the martini if one is featured on the cocktail menu, and my partner got the Puerto Escondido (mezcal, beet, grapefruit, jalapeño) which is a super tasty spicy mezcal marg variation. I then tried the Diamond District (mezcal, persimmon liqueur, cocchi americano) which is a variation of one of my other go-to drinks, a white mezcal negroni. No complaints here. Food-wise, we obviously leaned into the seafood here heavily. Tried to sample as much variety as possible and I'd say we did a pretty impressive job. We weren't able to finish everything but we tried our very best. Truly everything was exceptional so my usual letter grades aren't all that necessary because it was As across the board. Eats, below: Amberjack w/ tomato water, crispy shallot, shiso oil Ideal first dish, definitely had some amuse bouche qualities, being both light and bright. The fish was incredibly fresh and the concept overall with sophisticated with use of texture and flavor that was impressive in its subtlety and execution. Chicory Salad w/ blue cheese, walnut, persimmon, coffee cider vinaigrette Our one veggie of the night and it was well worth our while, fresh winter greens with that tried and true blue cheese/walnut combo made unique by the coffee cider vinaigrette which emphasized the sweet and earthy notes of the dish and brought everything together beauitfully. Wild Shrimp w/ salted kumquat, poblano pepper, pomelo If I had to give an award to most unique of the night, it would have to go to this dish. I've had a dizzying amount of seafood over the years and I've been lucky enough try to a lot of different types of things in a lot of different types of ways and this one stands out. Something about the flavor and texture of the mostly-raw shrimp with the delicate and aromatic citrus elements. Just impossibly fresh, bright, and delicious. Octopus w/ pipián verde, roasted tomatillo juice, cucumber, serrano A preparation I'm used to seeing served warm but I enjoyed it cold just the same. The overall flavor profile was predictable but the elements contributing to it were less so. The green mole was delicious and overall this dish was a perfect bridge between the lighter and the richer, a segue so perfect it was as if it was divinely ordained. Squid a la Plancha w/ pine nut, maitake mushroom, tinta, poblano The first of two warm dishes we ordered. A nice complement to some of the lighter dishes we had earlier in the meal that were more aromatic/vegetal/gardenia vibes, this dish was earthier, more umami and grounding. Jerked Hamachi Collar w/ mango-pickle mayo, lime Hard to finish with this because it was probably the richest of the dishes and we were already somewhat full by this point, but I ate as much as I could because it was just that good. The mango-pickle mayo was just sublime, the fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned beautifully -- altogether a playful and powerful way to end the meal.

Walked in with my partner on an early Sunday afternoon and snagged a couple of bar seats. We wanted to try a little bit of everything to get the full brunch experience. We got the egg sandwich with bacon, the roasted potatoes, an extra side of eggs, a side of the breakfast sausage, and of course the pancake. The breakfast sandwich was very classic - a nice soft bun, fluffy eggs, nice crispy bacon, and that pepper jam was the best touch of sweetness to cut through all the savory bits in there. Roasted potatoes were fine, nothing to write home about. Definitely needed some salt, but I did think the jalapeño mash on top was yum. But truly, if you take anything away from this review, it's that you need to come for the pancake. Fresh apples on top and on the inside, thick and fluffy with just the right amount of airiness (as you would expect from anything sourdough), plus the syrup was delicious. So easy to mop up with bites of pancake. It's obviously not a regular style of pancake, so if that's what you're looking for, this isn't it. But if you like unique takes on a breakfast classic, you should definitely come try.

Since I wrote my initial review of Wayne & Sons, thinks have changed dramatically - for the better…read more Seemingly after establishing a proof of concept in Manhattan, they've moved to Williamsburg in Brooklyn. It's a bit further from the G and L than I'd prefer (especially if the weather is bad) but the journey from the subway is well worth it. The biggest upgrade at the new location is size: the new Texas-sized space might genuinely be ten times the size of the old Manhattan location. This makes it much easier to get a spot, with a sizable bar on the side away from the door and a dozen or so tables spread throughout the restaurant. It can still get cramped when they're busy but that's to be expected at any New York City restaurant. The decor of the restaurant is delightfully kitschy and every time I visit I see something new that's charmingly Texas. Service was already friendly in the smaller Manhattan space but it's only gotten better now they're able to squeeze more than a couple of employees in the space. Honestly they might have some of the friendliest service in New York City. Food and drink have improved as well. On the food front you've got all the old favorites and some new additions. My girlfriend and I agree that the chili fries are probably the best thing on the menu, with the Texquites and crunchy taco also being fantastic. The drinks have also improved, with the Strong As Buck drinks (limit 1!) making the hop across the East River and multiple frozen drinks joining the menu (I don't think those weee there before but the Texas Tea may have clouded my memory). Also need to shout out the house-made hot sauce, with the red being both very hot and very flavorful. It's a fantastic TexMex restaurant and if they had fajitas it would be perfect. Wayne & Sons 2.0 had a difficult challenge in being better than the original. They did it effortlessly.
