The focaccia was really good, had a nice crisp crust and the bottom soaked in olive oil. The stracciatella was also very good with large pieces of acorn squash and oranges on top. I had the rigatoni for dinner and it tasted fresh. The noodles were cooked just right, the sauce was bit too thin for me. We finished with the Guinness cake. The first bite was delicious! Quite a few folks I know have told me about VHH over the years, raving about the sourdough pancake in particular, and I'm now mad I didn't come in sooner to try it. Walked in with my partner on an early Sunday afternoon and snagged a couple of bar seats. We wanted to try a little bit of everything to get the full brunch experience. We got the egg sandwich with bacon, the roasted potatoes, an extra side of eggs, a side of the breakfast sausage, and of course the pancake. The breakfast sandwich was very classic - a nice soft bun, fluffy eggs, nice crispy bacon, and that pepper jam was the best touch of sweetness to cut through all the savory bits in there. Roasted potatoes were fine, nothing to write home about. Definitely needed some salt, but I did think the jalapeño mash on top was yum. But truly, if you take anything away from this review, it's that you need to come for the pancake. Fresh apples on top and on the inside, thick and fluffy with just the right amount of airiness (as you would expect from anything sourdough), plus the syrup was delicious. So easy to mop up with bites of pancake. It's obviously not a regular style of pancake, so if that's what you're looking for, this isn't it. Ambiance and service get this place 5 stars, easy. We dined at night, and the space really shines after dark. Warm lighting, elevated "found object" design touches, and that perfect hum of ambient chatter that makes a dining room feel alive without being loud. Rich, smooth, and beautifully balanced. The octopus dish had delicious beans and a flavorful chorizo sauce, though the octopus itself wasn't quite as charred or firm as I expected. The pork was delicious I'm not usually used to pork served with that much pink, but it was incredibly tender and buttery. The jalapeño grits were a standout side. Spicy, creamy, and still pleasantly gritty all at once. The potatoes au gratin were the only dish that felt a little underwhelming. I was hoping for more butter and cream, pepper maybe even a hint of onion or garlic to deepen the flavor. Still, it's a really fun spot overall. My first 2026 review goes to Vinegar Hill House. Vinegar Hill House is located in one of the historic neighborhoods in Brooklyn. We had the chance to have brunch here for a double birthday celebration of my friends. The place is casual and arguably small and packed. Making reservations in advance is vital to avoid disappointment. When our group was seated, we were given a one-page brunch menu. There were very few brunch selections, and I settled with a French omelette with comté and zucchini served with greens and bacon on the side. I was surprised how delicious the omelette was, and I felt that it could do without the bacon. The ambiance is festive, and the servers are attentive and checked on us many times. I will definitely come back here as my friend told me that I should try their cast iron chicken for dinner. read more

WOW. Since I was in Paris in early 2022, no breakfast has been able to top the one I had in a tiny little cafe there, but Vinegar Hill House may be the one to do it. To start off with the restaurant itself, it was so cozy and cute; and the staff were so incredibly lowkey and chill. The FOOD was next level. I don't think any images (including mine) do justice to the absolute flavor bomb that each dish carries. We got the apple sourdough pancakes (of course), the french omelette with oyster mushrooms, the egg sandwich, and the leek quiche and each bit was more delicious than the last. The sandwich was super unsuspecting, but the fluffy egg mixed with the perfectly melted brie and jam was just absolutely insane. Similarly, I had never really given quiches a chance because I just thought they'd be too eggy, but VHH is just SO GOOD at cooking fluffy eggs. I was expecting the most out of the omelette, and maybe it was because I received the end piece, but it was probably the least favorite for me, but that is not to say that it tasted bad, just less exciting than the rest. Finally, the pancakes... I am still DREAMING about them. The sourdough was STRONG and the pancake was just so perfectly fluffy. I also have to give a quick shoutout to the delicious House Bloody. Get ready. This is going to be one of those Matthew S. eats a lot of food and then ranks it reviews. Another typical brunch spot in Brooklyn. Pricey, ritzy, in an upper class neighborhood that I can only dream about living in, and menu items that are only meant for people with refined palettes and deep pockets. The last part is a slight exaggeration, because the food really is not that expensive. Okay, now for the food. I ordered three things here, not counting the orange juice I felt was necessary as it is brunch. The orange juice is not very good. It almost tastes spiked with champagne, and not in the mimosa, hair of the dog kind of way. The first item I ordered was their Willoughby Egg Sandwich. If you want bacon with it, you will pay $3 extra. It is small, and rather unimpressive in appearance. I know it is a simple sandwich, but I could get it at my bodega in Coney Island for a fraction of the price. The only reason I feel the price is high is because high quality ingredients are put into this. 2/5 French Omelette: Part 2 of this brunch brings me to an omelette that looks like something I ordered on my train to Montreal. This one however is so underwhelming. The cheese is too numerous and soft, the eggs looked off, too pillowy for my liking. The side salad is nice, but the omelette is supposed to be the star, and it falls flat. 1/5 Sourdough Apple Pancake: As I heard this is their hotshot item, I got this last. I chose to get the large pancake (you can also get it smaller), but the large is not overwhelming in size. Everything about this pancake is done right. A great amount of sweetness but not too sweet. It is fluffy but plenty light. The apples provide a nice crunchy note, and you get apple in every bite. 4/5 The service at this restaurant was friendly too. Even though the restaurant opens at precisely 10 am on weekends (not one minute earlier), I was able to snag a stool at the bar without a reservation. No waiting for me! I also liked the cozy, vintage atmosphere even if I was sweating like a pig because of the burning fireplace nearby. It adds a nice winter vibe. However, I will be blunt. I will not be returning. No? No. The food is generally mediocre; there are much better brunch options in Brooklyn without sacrificing a 40 minute train ride on the F train. read more

I saw a recommendation to try this place out and it did not disappoint! The restaurant gives an intimate feeling with its small size and low lighting. Staff is super friendly and it helped having reservations for brunch since they were fully booked Saturday morning. Apple pancake: 9.5/10 - I'm not big on eating sweet items in the morning but this was worth getting. Our table of 4 shared a large pancake and it was so good! The sweetness was coming purely from the apples so it's not overwhelming even with all the syrup on top. I was pleasantly surprised and would come back just for this. Quiche: 8/10 - If you're looking for something to get your veggies in for the day this is it! The crust was flakey and the filling was eggy with just enough bit from the broccoli. Lovely neighborhood brunch and dinner spot. I made a reservation for Sunday night for a meeting with my boss. The atmosphere is warm and quaint. The menu is limited, but in a good way. I was a little thrown off because I asked our server if the sunchoke was big enough to eat as a main. They said yes. When I received the salad my first thought was "I am going to have to eat something else when I get home". Cafe Gitane didn't have space for four so we went next door to Vinegar Hill House. It kind of reminded me of an old cozy tavern. It was definitely very cute. The service was nothing to write home about. In fact our server was quite curt. She definitely was having a bad day. The food was tasty but the portion size for the price was crazy even for NYC. Popped in here for a dinner w/ some work connections, and this is a bit out in the quieter, less new, but still pretty trendy neighborhood of Brooklyn, reminds me of some of the areas in Jersey City, honestly, small tight row homes and cobble/pot-holed streets. They have a bar and seating that's a bit on the uncomfortable side, leaving a somewhat unfinished or legacy feeling throughout - the table was uneven making for tilted plates and water at times. The server took great delight telling us where various foods were from, so they try to source local, including the beer I tried (a peach sour which I thought would be a good start to summer). The semolina sesame bread was surprisingly dry; even with the butter it only helped the area the butter was on, and the rest of the bite was tougher. Scallop crudo was not bad, pickled melon, buttermilk, basil and fennel pollen. The romaine salad was good - a take on caesar. The english peas & feta wasn't bad ,either, I'm just not a peas fan. Chicken liver mousse had a lovely vinegar onion with it and the bread there was much better than the semolina we tried earlier - this is what you can get if you like liver or foie gras. Dinner I tried the rigatoni, lamb ragu w/ pecorino. The cheese was strong, the lamb was stronger, overwhelming a bit - I liked the pasta, very much al dente but the whole dish could've used a bit more balance. I also tried a few pieces of the pork chop, too thick for me - I like it cooked thinner and more juicy / fatty, but the center was simply leaner/harder than I like. Others enjoyed it. Asparagus side was pretty solid. Citrus and radishes... too salty blech... literal crunch of salt eating it. Dessert - a panna cotta...which might've been good, but they had olive oil on it which completely ruined the expectation of flavor - would've been better with honey. Overall, perhaps some folks enjoy because it's their neighborhood haunt, but I've had better - Jockey Hollow in Morristown does a much better job of this local food sourcing and cooking. read more

Everything about our private dining experience was EXCEPTIONAL. From the food to the service to the ambiance, our surprise party went off without a hitch. Gikas took incredible care of us, checking in the exact right amount, adjusting the fireplace to ensure comfort at all times, and flawlessly handling everything I asked for so that we could enjoy the evening without a hint of worry. When you enter, it's an older looking establishment, no frills, small kitchen but the food speaks for itself. They incorporate seasonal fruit into the sourdough pancakes. So far I've loved everything from plums to apples to pears. I am not a fan of pears but they were delicious! Mocktails and cocktails are well thought out. Coffee is strong. No lattes here. Came for the pancakes since so many lists on Instagram claim they're the best in NYC but disappointingly overpriced. The seasonal sourdough pancake is super thick, interior looks fluffy but actually tastes very doughy/stretchy, uncooked/custardy, not cakey like a traditional pancake. Almost has a savory flavor that reminds me of a scallion pancake lol but you definitely get the funky sourness too. The top is browned nicely but not crusty or crisp, surprisingly the maple syrup had more flavor than the butter. I'm glad they offered a smaller size option! The smoked trout plate was good but nothing out of the ordinary. The trout was actually really tender and just a little fatty to add softness. I used to walk by Vinegar Hill House all the time when i lived in the neighborhood and always meant to try it. Took a few years, but I finally made it. I'm happy to say it was worth the wait and I was an idiot for waiting! I didn't take pictures of the interior, but it's very cozy and there's a great garden in the back for outdoor seating. Even the bathroom is charming! For brunch, we shared the wonderful, melt in your mouth sourdough persimmon pancake (smaller size, $14) and the porkbelly sandwich (the flavor is unmatched). The brunch menu was very different from its dinner menu, and it was hard to do research on the place based on the photos on yelp cause it was mostly dinner service photos. My favourite restaurant in Brooklyn and possibly in New York. Without the flash and pomp and circumstance of uber expensive restaurants, this local little neighborhood gem is not only authentic in its style, but phenomenal food service, wine selection with the star of the show the incredible menu items. This would literally be my last meal, but I would insist on having it at he bar close to the kitchen so I can watch the expertise on display by the chefs, chat with the waiters and flirt with the bartender...all incredible human beings that take pride in their work with the utmost humility.
