Yet another boba adventure and thankfully this was a good one. This place is kind of out of the way since it is all the way across the city and because of parking, but this was worth the stop. It is a small hole in the wall Boba place that is just doing take out because of COVID-19 and since the shop is so small. As for the drinks, we got the Matcha Milk Snow, Genmaicha Milk Tea with Housemade Boba, and Mango Freeze Coconut Milk with Mango Stars. The Matcha Milk Snow thankfully had more Matcha flavor than most Matcha drinks that I had before. Although, this isn't the best Matcha drink I have had since it doesn't have the rich earthy taste that I like, but this was a nicely cold drink that wasn't too thick since it Japanese Uji Matcha was blended in with ice and Milk with a scoop of Matcha Ice Cream on top. Also, the Red Beans gave this drink a different texture and some sweetness, but thankfully not too much. The Genmmaicha Milk Tea with Housemade Boba was really good. It had a nice strong tea taste and wasn't too sweet. Also, the Boba was nice and soft. The Mango Freeze Coconut Milk with Mango Stars was a nicely refreshing drink from the fruity Mango flavor, but it wasn't overly sweet. Also, the Coconut Milk was a nice touch to the drink that helped give it a little of a creamy texture. As for the Mango Stars, it was a nice touch that went well with the Mango drink and were just cute because of the shape. Overall, this was a great find since this place had some really good drinks. Definitely recommend and would come back here again to try some other ones. read more

I was amazed that they were still open on Christmas. I typically order the Hong Kong milk tea or roasted oolong milk tea, but this time, I ordered the genmaicha milk tea with boba at 50% sweet. It was good. It wasn't too sweet, and I really tasted the genmaicha. Wasn't watered down at all. Boba was warm when I got it, and it had the right amount of chew and sweetness. First time reviewing TJ Cups, but I've been here many times over the last 5 years or so - probably close to ten times. I usually get the Roasted Oolong Milk Tea with Boba here, but today I got the Hojicha Milk Tea with Boba, which I've had one other time before. They almost always ask me to wait 7 minutes to brew fresh tea for my drink, which I don't mind doing especially as I'm sure it improves the flavor. The tea itself is fairly strong, and has a nice flavor to it without much bitterness. I usually get 50% sweet here, because I think that's plenty and I don't find the tea is bitter to the point of needing to balance it out with full sweetness. The milk is quite creamy and nice - I don't find it watery at all and it has a nice mouthfeel. The boba varies a bit from batch to batch, which is pretty normal - when it's best it has a nice texture, bouncy and chewy but not hard in the middle. I'd say most of the time the very middle is a little firm but overall it's pretty good. The flavor of the boba itself has a very pleasant brown sugar note all the way through, without feeling sickly sweet. I actually found a hair in my drink today (first time this has ever happened to me), but I fished it out okay and didn't try to get the drink replaced since I didn't discover it until I got home. I'm going to chalk that one up to bad luck and not let it affect the rating. I'd say this is one of the better boba places in the Sunset District in terms of consistency and overall quality, recommend! read more

Second time ordering from TJ Cups and still happy with my order. I ordered the Jasmine Milk Tea with boba at 25% sugar and less ice. They're consistent in how they make their boba and milk teas. The jasmine is just strong enough the way I like and the tea isn't bitter like other places that over brew their teas. My mom likes their taro milk with boba since she doesn't want the caffeine from a normal milk tea. It comes with chunks of taro in it which she says is really good. The staff is very friendly and always happy to answer any questions. The place is clean and they're on the food ordering apps which is really convenient. I love that they're always consistent with your orders no matter what your order. I've actually stopped by and ordered from them multiple times since I started this review. This use to by my go to but never again. Purchased 6 drinks from the kiosk today and elected to not print a receipt. Business was quiet, everyone else before me had already picked up their drinks. One of the employees (employee #1) called my name and stated one of the drinks will take 7 minutes to make. Ok, not an issue. While I was standing there, saw employee #1 hand off an iced matcha snow drink to the next customer. When it came time for me to pick up, employee #2 asked for a receipt which I told her I didn't print one out. A brief moment later, she stated she will trust me but that I needed a receipt. Way to make me feel like a criminal for buying 6 drinks. I countered by asking if the receipt is mandatory, why didn't the kiosk print one out. She responded that it was suppose to. Employee #2 sided with me that the kiosk gives you an option. Never again. While waiting, I saw other customers did NOT present a receipt but for buying 6 drinks, I needed proof. F this place. When in California (especially "Asian" areas), you got to have boba. My mom and I were grabbing dimsum from across the street when I noticed this location. Do note that the drinks take a little while if you are ordering blended drinks, but it's worth the wait if you got some time (around 7 min). Mango coconut slush: I was picturing the mango-sago dessert from HK dessert joints, but this was actually slightly different. They say that they do not add any sugar into this drink, but it was SO sweet...almost too sweet, which is a bit mind blowing as it means that the mango must be amazing. The mango is very fragrant and reminds me of the flavor from the mango puddings at dim sum joints; basically real mango instead of artificial, which I'm sure this is what it was. The only downside was that because the mango was SO fragrant/sweet, it pretty much completely hid the coconut milk, which disappointed my mom as she wanted a better balance of both for the drink. Still a nice drink though if you are heavily into mango (if you like coconut a lot too, then might need to tweak this or opt for a different drink). Hojicha milk tea with boba: The hojicha was slightly different from what I remember, but this is my first time having it cold. Nevertheless, it was still a solid drink and the boba was perfectly cooked. I also like that the drink was not overly sweet with the boba, as sometimes the boba syrup can affect the drink--but not this one! Overall, the drinks are definitely of good quality and I like that many things are made in house/local. It's a solid boba joint and on par with most other boba spots I've had in SF. Just be prepared to spend about $7+ per drink though, as inflation is making things cray. read more

WHEW okay I went again since I needed my occasional milk/fruit tea fix and the Hong Kong milk tea is soo good! I was hesitant to get it since a lot of my hk milk tea experiences were just very meh, but this drink has completely changed my outlook on it! Definitely #2 on the top 9 drinks for a reason. The boba has just the right amount of "chew" to it. I definitely like this boba texture more than BB's down the street, but Yifang's boba taste still reigns king imo. Drink - I was really digging the strong black tea flavor they infused into their milk tea, and the drink was creamy and not watery at all. My guess was they used cream instead of milk to make their drinks, and I loved it. The honey boba was also great - it was soft and perfectly sweetened. I've probably spent countless hours playing the boardgames at TJ Cups with friends back in high school, it however being one of the further boba shop locations. They used to have creative toppings like strawberry hearts or mango stars, but got rid of those type of gimmicky options to provide a more quality service. I think the best way to determine if a place is good is to see if they do the basics right, the basic being the Jasmine Milk Tea. Here, they have a good balance of actual tea and sweetness without making the drink feel like pure sugar. On another occasion, I got the Double Peach Green Tea. The drink itself tasted like the regular green tea with the peach-flavored syrup, and the peach bit toppings taste like the peach bits you'd get from canned yellow peaches. The service has always been quick and they keep the shop relatively clean. It's a shame that it's so far from the main part of the city, as it's definitely one of the better boba shops. read more
