I live in East Nashville and this is my goto. When my friends visit I make them try it and they all are now also addicted. Other than wine and sloths it's my obsession. I asked about getting some sides of veggies ( eg, sautéed greens or broccoli) and was told they only have veggies that are "in season" , so no options. didn't offer to accommodate or find a dish that would work. Official 'no tipping' has arrived in Nashville. So, 'no tipping' doesn't really mean 'no tipping.' It means that the price point is higher on the front end, so as to achieve a living wage to the folks who work there. So, think of it as 'tip included.' I spent $35 (including tax) on my cocktail and entree, if that gives you a sense of what to expect. TKO is brand-spankin' new and needs to work out some kinks. That said, they're surprisingly put together for such a new venture. The building is just the one you're thinking of: the new brick complex that sprung up out of nowhere on Gallatin, towards the northern edge of Inglewood. Without even looking at the address, I knew that's where I was heading. The dining room is a bit sparse and without personality. As time goes by, I expect that to change -- especially given the unique POV (Southern + Chinese?). What is full of personality, though, is the wait staff. Our server was funny, engaging and very involved. She made us fell welcomed and explained the menu quite well. And, let's talk about the menu: it's small. Again, TKO is new and it makes sense that they start small with tried and true plates that customers like and grow from there rather than having to edit a large menu. I started the meal with a No. 3 cocktail. It's a combination of Rye icepick Rittenhouse, lemon, ginger, apple, and angostura. I felt the taste was a bit muted and muddied. I wouldn't order it again; I want some punch when it comes to my cocktails. It was fine but at $11, I want to know that I'm going to enjoy my drink. Points for an interesting combination, though. I wrestled with a couple of entree options but ultimately decided on the lamb mapo tofu. After being shocked at how quickly our food came to the table, I was able to enjoy the smells from the plates that surrounded me. This is a decently spicy plate of crumbled lamb, chili paste, fried tofu, onion, and szechaun pepper. The rice (this dish definitely needs rice) was $3 extra. I was a bit put out by that. I don't think you should create a dish that needs rice -- and, then, charge extra for it. I also agree with another yelper that the portion size doesn't quite add up to the price point. I am going to give TKO the benefit of the doubt because they're new and trust that as time goes on, either the portion size or price will change (probably the former). But, if I am honest, I just crossed the line into 'full' but was nowhere near 'stuffed.' Depending on how you eat, this could be a good or bad thing. But, no matter how much larger my belly became, my mouth was very happy with the food. TKO's an interesting addition to the Nashville culinary landscape. I'm curious to see how neighborhood folks and food fans (I hate the 'f----e' word) take to it. I'm also eager to see what crops up around it. TKOMG!!!!! Rotating menu made me nervous. But seriously, you should never be nervous here because whatever they serve you is going to be amazing. How did they get even better?! I am in awe. Took the fiance's family there and they claim it is one of the best meals they have ever had in their lives. 2 orders of egg drop soup, 2 orders of chicken livers (they have made them even better!!!!), fried cauliflower, lo mein, fried rice, half fried chicken, pork belly, meatballs...i think that is everything. We probably could have ordered more chicken livers and fried chicken. Everything we put in our mouths was so good. I had the no. 16 cocktail. I am a whisk(e)y girl, so this was for me. A rye and citrus flavor. Refreshing and delightful. Next time, I am getting the mystery dinner. I will eat whatever they put in front of my face and love it. read more

Chinese with a twist! Portion size was a bit small for the price but I guess we're seeing a lot of that lately. I had the chicken fat fried rice and the bourbon friend rice. Both were good! I love the spring roll - it was large and delicious. The noodles were good and spicy. The best was the sweet and sour chicken. Was good with white rice. Overall I thought it was good but didn't really scratch the Chinese take out itch for me. I'll note I'm not from nor do I live in Nashville. An hour before closing because I refuse to be the ones ordering very last minute. Maybe next time I'll dine in at an earlier time. Nevertheless the food should not have been this bad whether it was Togo or not. The steamed buns. I don't know y'all, maybe it's because I'm asian and I'm used to good quality steamed buns but this one here is just....surprisingly underwhelming at the least. Okay, the bun itself is pretty spot on, everything else? Wouldn't put it near my mouth ever again. Inside was a mush of what seemed like pot roast veggies with a thick gooey substance and potatoes. I understand fusion but this ain't fusion, this is an insult to the asian community. And it came with a horseradish type mustard sauce. HELL NO. I love mustard. I mean, besides relish that's the only other thing I put on a hotdog or a brat. But yo, not with a steamed bun! TERRIBLE pairing. I'm just glad whoever thought of that isn't a sommelier, then we would be in BIG trouble! My crispy pork belly was the highlight. It was a glimpse of the potential that this place has to offer but quickly died. This may have been my fault because I ordered to go. The steam then made the skin soggy I assume. If it was me I would have placed the pork in a different container as the okra and the the sauce may have moistened and dulled the ever so beautiful crunch of a perfectly cooked crispy pork belly. Flavors there but no texture. Very disappointed. But the worst of the worst. The rice. Now I have eaten rice almost everyday growing up. It's my heritage and my culture. This rice was BAD. Hard pieces and no uniformity. Over cooked and tasted like there was no soul or love put into that rice. Granted there's rice cookers, but add some more water to it! A little bit of butter if you will and boom, decent rice. It was almost as bad as Nomzilla's rice.(not the sushi rice, the side of rice) Now I will go back to eat and update the review. I will make some time to come early so the food is fresh and I will dine in. There should be no excuses for another bad review unless the service is a reflection of the food I bought s few nights ago. We shall see, stay tuned. Man, I don't think I've ever given a bad review of a restaurant, but I just picked up my $70 (including tip) order and almost feel like crying. The portions are so small and so flavorless I can hardly believe it. I live across the street, have picked up DoorDash orders for other people here in the past and always thought TKO seemed like a cool little local spot. I never go out to eat, but just got paid and thought I'd treat myself and my husband. Maybe I just ordered the wrong things, but both chicken dishes are mostly watery sauce, and the lo mein is completely without flavor. The egg roll is a single roll with a bit of sauce. Spent all this money hoping for something delicious with maybe some leftovers, and it won't even be enough to feed us for dinner :((( Again I hate to rag on a local joint, but I don't want anyone else to waste hard earned $ if you can only afford to go out once in a blue moon. read more

I just paid $15 for overcooked and unseasoned noodles w/2 table spoons of (unseasoned) chopped vegetables on top. My $15 sweet and sour chicken was precisely 1 chicken thigh, again over cooked, and under seasoned. Spring roll was good. It's really frustrating that the food is not reliable. I'm definitely out of patience. I basically paid $75 for food that I had to re-cook and re-imagine into an edible dish....and the ONLY REASON I ordered out was to save myself some work. I was hoping this would blow our socks off but it did not. Ordered 2 egg rolls, garlic fried rice, 2 TKO chicken, and the Szechuan green beans. Chicken was good but soggy. It did not come with white rice. Surprised by this because it's $14. Garlic Fried Rice was spicier than expected and lacked salt. Green beans were advertised as being "local" which made me think fresh. They seem from a can and were mushy. Maybe that's their take on southern greens beans with Asian flair. $8 not worth it! The best Chinese food (with an upscale twist) that I have ever eaten. To start off, the cocktails don't only just look good, they also taste amazing! The bartenders here really know what they're doing. Stated off with a homemade egg-roll....but note that they are definitely way larger than your average so I would say that one is good for two people. A good mixture of vegetarian friendly and meat-lover entrées. Ordered 3 plates to try a little bit of everything. Hearty sized portions, which is great for a delicious reheat later if you decide to take leftovers home (which you should, do not waste this stuff, people!). We got takeout here while on vacation in Nashville. We are vegans and have some with food allergies & diverticular issues and they were extremely accommodating. The spring roll was good, we loved the fried sweet potatoes that seemed to be cooked in a soy or balsamic reduction and the fried rice (minus the egg) was awesome. Considering that the chicken fried rice is double the price ($17 each!) of surrounding restaurants I was expecting something really great and inspiring. Nashville finally has Chinese! The atmosphere is awesome, very east Nash! You can easily see the dual woks, fryers, and all the prep in the open kitchen. Great bar. The owner isn't afraid to "get his hands dirty" - super welcoming and creative with his always changing menu. I am pulling for TKO and I have them a whole star just for their operational practices. No tipping so that waiters can make a living wage is very honorable and amazing. That gets a whole star in my book. The atmosphere is lacking though. It's an open kitchen with virtually no decor. It takes minimalistic to another level. The food is good 75% of the time. In more ham several occasions my food has been raw or my order has been wrong. The wait staff is always eager to fix it and happy to make it better. Their drink program (isn't that a funny term?) is pretty spot on. They are always able to help make suggestions based off of taste and alcohol preferences. I want TKO to be killer. But everything seems to be off - especially when we're looking at higher prices. $17 for fried rice that I could make myself just isn't cutting it. The Lo Mein was delicious and so are some of the other smaller plates. However every time I order a protein forward dish (the chicken) it's raw. Things just don't add up for me when the bill comes. I want to pay for the service I get - which is usually 100! But I also want to pay fairly for the food - and it's not quite there with flavor execution. read more

Picked up their lamb and greens plate for take out. It's been a long time since I've had to throw away a plate of food I ordered, but I just couldn't stomach my way through it. Somebody else here mentioned their food tasted like gasoline and I'd have to agree. Idk what they cooked this in, but it was an overwhelmingly bad taste left in my mouth. Had been wanting to check this place out for a long time. Friendly staff, but the food just not live up to the hype. I guess maybe I was expecting Chinese food, but what we got was far more "southern" fare, with non-traditional flavors. The fried chicken was a little over. The skin was too dark and had a burnt taste. I realize its a non-traditional batter but burnt is burnt. No way to get around that. The lo-mein had nice flavors but almost came off as stoner-leftovers - egg noodles, collard greens, and black bean sauce. The buttermilk lemon ice cream was the best thing we had. The donuts were not donuts but were doused with a mixture of honey, chili oil, and VINEGAR. Bad idea. I can still taste as I write this. I don't think this place knows who it is or who it wants to be yet. I just can't fathom a world where a diner wants to hear Lou Reed during the appetizer course and then be subjected to Kenny Chesney at dessert. WTF TKO? I hate Yelp, I don't write reviews, but when a familiar face opens an unfamiliar concept and produces genuine original ideas, I have to. I sat at the bar and Nick took care of me (ultra friendly guy) and left me asking for nothing. Exceptional service, especially for a restaurant with a tip free check. I had the egg roll, rice porridge and the lo mein. Everything was dynamite! Fresh noodles which, for reference, are made in house with two types of mushrooms made for a wicked dish. The sauce with the egg roll could have been sipped with a straw on account of how clean the combo of sweet and sour it had. The egg on the rice porridge was a perfect sunny side up and was topped with a brilliantly spicy chili sauce. The chef (Ryan) greeted me personally and was extremely kind. There are obviously kinks to work out in the vibe and atmosphere, but no restaurant can nail that right out of the gate. I have no complaints and will absolutely be back as soon as possible. Please note, this restaurant will provide an experience you are not used to. Enter with an open mind and an empty stomach and you'll leave with a smile. We were delightfully intrigued with TKO. They bill it as "southern Chinese" and the menu definitely reflects those elements. However it is more than that - there is a certain creative flair that takes the food to a unique realm. They offer a wide swath of possibilities for any appetite - carnivores,vegetarians, and vegans. I absolutely relished the lo mein, a tasty assembly of homemade noodles, mushrooms, cabbage, peanuts, and spiced with fiery Chile oil. Also, you can't go wrong with the humble egg roll, easily the best I've ever eaten. We were fortunate enough to see our order being prepared from scratch. The way in which the dining room is juxtaposed with the kitchen allows guests to view the chef and watch as their food is being prepared. The staff is relaxed and friendly, yet professional. They seem to enjoy their jobs. Our server was Kate or Katie, not quite sure of the name, but she was fully familiar with each menu item, the wine list as well as the origins of the beers. She was patient with our silly questions and made suggestions based on our dietary restrictions. We definitely see ourselves going back to TKO! read more

We did take-out & the food was VERY tasty!! It was unique for Asian/Asian-fusion & did I say TASTY?!?! We had the brisket & Brussels sprouts, chili noodles, and friend rice. I appreciated that the food containers were NOT styrofoam. The only downside is that portions felt a bit small to cost but I bet with overhead right on Gallatin Road in Inglewood during COVID, they are doing their best. I was struggling on this rating since the food itself was actually not bad, but it is not good enough to justify other aspects of the experience. The main thing is that the prices are quite high for what you are getting, and this does not appear to be because a tip is included. I ordered some basic alcoholic drinks and expected a high price, but on top of the liquor price I was charged for the diet coke mixer separately. I have never been anywhere where they charged a high price for liquor and then charged extra for a basic mixer. In addition as others have mentioned nothing is included with the food price, even white rice. The portions are also relatively small, but none of these details would bother me if the food itself was mind blowing, but it was not. Perhaps a different dish would have made the experience seem better, but as it stands I am not motivated to return. It is probably the best Asian food in that part of town, so as I always say, your experience may vary and judge for yourself. read more

The inside, just mushy mounds of cabbage and who knows what else - terrible, bland flavor. The fried broccoli was ok, but it's fried and tossed in some kind of mayo sauce - of course it's "ok." The most disappointing was the TKO chicken that tasted like it came out of the frozen aisle at the grocery. Nothing unique or fresh tasting about the sauce. And the fried rice...an honestly funky taste that seemed off. Like I stopped eating it after two bites. Quiet place for dinner, hardly anyone else in the restaurant on Wednesday night. I got the sweet and sour tofu. The sauce was rather interesting but the tofu could have used a longer fry time to make it crispier. For appetizer, I had the pork fried potatoes, which is really only good with the spicy mayo or spicy mustard sauce, otherwise I would skip them. For dessert, I had the cornbread donuts, not worth the price in my opinion. I had to wait a while for the food. Probably about 10 minutes for the appetizer and another 15 for the main course. 25 minutes is a long wait for this style of food. I'm not against returning but I wouldn't choose to return to TKO on my own. I think the empty restaurant shows others are thinking the same thing. read more

I almost feel like I'll be leading people on if I give a full three stars, so I'll start w the positives: Wait staff was great. They're an employee profit-sharing business. Very interesting. As such, there is no tipping. High food prices more than make up for whatever you would have given in tips, though. My son and I split the fried rice. For $17, I figured the portion would be sizeable; not so. It was a bit dry and not super flavorful. There were also several large ball chunks of white rice that hadn't gotten mixed up in the dish, so they were basically unseasoned. My husband ordered root vegetables and broccoli salad. These are appetizers. Don't expect to fill up! He proclaimed his dishes to be sub par. The lighting was dreadful. Cold, overhead lighting, gray interior, and no decorations made the restaurant feel the opposite of its claimed atmosphere of a "cozy, neighborhood spot". Sorry TKO!
