This is second time I've been here and, though my French Toast dish was tasty, I have to say I was disappointed that I had to ask several times for a coffee fill-up (nobody ever came by to offer a fill-up), the place felt drafty when I first sat down but got overheated by the time I left, and a waitress interrupted a conversation to present our bill (Somehow it felt like a rude intrusion). A true Portland hidden gem! There's so much to love about this place. It has a local neighborhood vibe, unpretentious, not hipster, not overpriced -- just great quality super delicious food. They have a robust list of cocktails for a reasonable price of $9. Their breakfast old fashion was stiff and perfectly balanced. They even put 2 cherries instead of 1! The squash and brussel sprouts dish was surprisingly amazing. The waitress said that was her favorite dish and I'm so glad I went with her recommendation. The squash was cooked perfectly and the Parmesan cheese and runny egg brought the whole dish together in luscious harmony. The crab Benedict was a special for the day and there was a generous amount of crab with a thick and crispy hash brown on the side. I would definitely make the drive to come here again. I'm curious how crowded it gets during busy hours since the place is small, but there is a bar with plenty of seating to order drinks while you wait. read more

$23 for an eggs Benedict with bacon is actually absurd. MAYBEEE with the smoked salmon this price would make sense, but even then, it is much higher than other spots in Portland. They were out of at least 5 items, which left the server in a not so great position. Pancake batter, Canadian bacon, greens, etc. This happens, but really, why even open until you're in a better position? The server was great, but would not come back purely based on a ridiculously priced eggs benedict, which, by the way, the eggs were over cooked and they were out of one of the main ingredients. read more

Service was incredible! Food was expensive and sparse. The sausage was very good, but I've had better (The Breakfast House)! My girlfriend thought the coffee was good, but felt Folgers Black Silk was just as good? Secondly heat the cup before filling it with hot coffee, suddenly it's Luke warm! It's not just Toast that serves lukewarm coffee, it's many of Portland's restaurants. (Not at My Fathers Place) always steaming hot. I wasn't totally disappointed, but won't be going back anytime soon. And one last thing, they make their own hot sauce, way better than what you buy at the store. Stopped here for lunch with my friends during our trip. We sat outside since we had our pooch with us. After reviewing the menu, I decided on the pulled pork with vegetables special and soft boiled egg. I thought the dish was heavy and oily. I didn't think that the soft boiled egg as needed as the pork already provided the fat for taste. The pulled pork was tasty though. I did enjoy the purple potatoes served with the dish. Not very common to find purple potatoes in dishes, so visually appealing. The staff was very attentive and friendly, especially to our dog. Our waitress was great. read more

Good place but could be perfected. Location:: Very easy to get to. Streets like Steele, 52nd and Holgate make for some peaceful 30mph driving. Street parking is as simple as could be. Food:: Going to a restaurant should make you giggle, extremely calm, or otherwise hit you like a truck. Eating here is like getting hit with a textbook, still hits, but this place doesn't break new grounds in creativity. I had the French Toast, which was definitely very very good. It comes with bacon, cream on the side, maple syrup, and an apple-pear compote. bacon+apples =yes, bacon+cream=no. Eating the bacon and apples together leaves the rest of the dish a little too heavy. I'd additionally serve French Toast with berries (alongside the apples) to contrast the fat. French Toast pairs wonderfully with good coffee... which this place doesn't have They have Courier Coffee but on drip. What?! Waste of beans that cost a premium. Make it into an espresso or make it a pour-over. If making good coffee isn't your aim (it should be) just use some less expensive beans. They gave me a free hash brown. All dolled up and stuff. Comes with some herb (parsley?) and hot sauce. Use the one that's darker in color of the two you are offered. Oh, and portion sizes are massive. Good for us. Service:: Wonderfully friendly. I'm an awkward dork but talking to the server was pleasant. She let me sit in the corner, in my happy place; however, she did get my soda wrong. Got some seltzer water instead, eh. Atmosphere:: Comfortable and cozy. I came in at 1:30 pm and there were two other clientele. I wish they offered some books to read, ____ I'll be back to try a savory dish next time. I've been wanting to try Toast for quite a while now. After getting a few texts on a Sunday morning for a brunch summons, I responded with glee. Upon arrival, the place was pretty packed. I poured myself some coffee from the counter and noticed the only sugar option was a green packet of a sugar substitute from the raw sugar I'm used to having. I shrugged and tried it: tasted like barkdust yuck. My friend agreed it had a bitter after taste. Our name was on top of the list but something was a little off. Other people came in and would get seated promptly. After a while, we finally got seated in the back room. Service was 50/50 - consistent at times and other times we waited before coffee and water refills would take place. The items on the menu looked interesting so we all ordered various plates. The food arrived in a timely manner and they did look pretty impressive by its presentation alone. The portions are not huge however and the price is a little higher than other brunch spots. The flavors of each plate was alright, a little bland at times, and just average. The pork belly was pretty small considering the price tag and my friend was still hungry after that. This spot is definitely one of my top choices for brunch. It seems the place was better a few years ago based on earlier reviews. Awwwww, crap. This is right down the street from me now and I have a feeling we will be having a sweet affair. I'll keep this short and sweet. Service was great and friendly. Food was delicious and hot. Coffee was strong and my cup was never empty. I recommend getting the coffee cake ($3) once in a while, because it is cooked on the griddle, which caramelizes the edges. Then it's topped with powdered sugar, as if it needed any. It is quite dense, but it's a smaller portion. It is perfect for 2 people. The only issue was consistency in the dishes and size. I checked out the photos beforehand, and when we received our plates, the items we received looked a bit smaller. The rostis looked more seasoned than in the photos. The guys next to us commented on how the sizes were smaller since the last time they visited. It's still quite a bit of food, so it's not really an issue. I'm sure it depends on who's cooking. The one thing you need to know about Toast is that THERE IS AN EGG *MASTER* IN THIS KITCHEN. The scrambled eggs were perfect. The over easy egg was amazing. The fried eggs with the daily special were like art on a plate. Every egg around me and in front of me was straight from Egg Heaven. Gordon Ramsay would be proud. The burger was delectable - and I'm pretty picky when it comes to burgers. Mostly I'm picky about how it's cooked. I like it when it's medium rare. Although this burger could have been a little rarer - it was so ultra juicy and tender that I hardly noticed it's minimal pink-ness. That's probably because (as the waiter told me) they use steak and grind the meat there... that apparently makes for one delicious steak. It came with a little side salad, and it was on toast (go figure), with some mustard, mayo, and grilled onions. Yum. The price ran me $9.50 - which is a touch pricey, but I guess that that's the going rate there days for a good burger. And good it was. I was also eying the blueberry muffins, and scones. The coffee smelled great, the decor was cute, and the service was great. I'm definitely going to have to make a return trip to enjoy the breakfast goods. read more

After reading reviews on Yelp, the hubs and I decided to try out this place. The place was booming as I expected for a late Saturday morning. Our wait time was about 30mins, not too bad but the inside waiting is really tiny and no way were we going to wait outside in the freezing cold, as other patrons had the same idea so, we all crowded together in the tiny wait space. No biggie. The place itself is a small restaurant with a definite hipster vibe, nestled in a cute little neighborhood with street parking. To start our Portland adventures, we were seated at the counter that overlooked the open kitchen. I ordered a Bloody Mary after seen so many being made, I figured they must be good here. Boy, was I wrong! I pretty much got tomato juice and a splash of vodka. At least the presentation of it was nice lol. For our food, I ordered the Go Home Thomas which was to consist of scrambled eggs, white cheddar (mine was missing :-( sadly), house ground sausage (burnt) with braised greens on a House English muffin served with breakfast potatoes. I'm sad to say, this was very underwhelming in flavor and overly priced. The hubs was the smarter one and ordered the daily special of fried eggs with house made biscuits and gravy. He enjoyed his dish very much! After we were done and ready to check out, they give you a free bite sized bread pudding dessert which was delicious! I should have just ordered that instead of my breakfast option. Reason not sending my plate back, for one, I hate doing that, and lastly, as mentioned before, this place was booming and the staff were all over the place attending to other patrons. Our food came out late too and I honestly think they forgot our order considering larger parties who were seated after us got their orders first lol. This is totally the cute neighborhood joint that happens to be gourmet,. But it may be just that, a joint only for the neighborhood. After reading all these great reviews, I had to try this place. There are some places that I recall every detail and taste because it's just that wonderful, but this wasn't one of them. The menu, staff, and place were all great. But when I left and was walking to my car, I just felt blah about the whole experience. I wasn't as impressed as others have expressed. It was a mix of crowded & not during our meal there, but we were quickly led to a table and greeted with mini raspberry scones. Cute gesture. The menu was awesome. There's everything from fancy steak & eggs to a truffled veggie omelet to rhubarb french toast to (the special for that day) a roasted lamb with eggs. There was a even a menu for mixed non-alcoholic juices. I got the Space Cowboy, which was OJ, grape juice, ginger ale, and orange flower water. The BF got the Zero Gravity, which had ginger ale, orange juice, splash of cranberry, and an orange wedge. Both were super delish & I was impressed. I ordered the breakfast sliders (Yes A Different Slider Roll) & the BF got the eggs benedict (Benny & the Mets). The sliders were on a housemade brioche with house ground sausage, mustard greens, soft sheep's milk cheese, and scrambled eggs. There was a potato rosti on the side. The rosti was GBD (golden brown & delicious). The sliders left me wanting something more. The sausage and was not as flavorful as I would've hoped nor the brioche as buttery. My mom used to make mustard greens a lot and they were not as complex as ones I've had before. The scrambled eggs were dotted with the soft cheese and that creaminess worked well. Overall, I didn't really feel like delving into the 2nd slider, which would normally never be the case. The benedict was served on housemade english muffins with nitrate free ham and, of course, poached eggs & hollandaise. The BF has become somewhat of a eggs benedict connoisseur. He said his hollandaise didn't have the lemony tang of others (like Sanborn's & Meriwether's) and that he was surprised he missed it. I tried the sauce & it was missing something. The ham though was the "best ham ever" as the menu states. It reminded us of the pork loin slices he had in his benny at Veritable Quandary. Don't get me wrong, I'd go back because it's cute & local, but I really would rather head elsewhere for food at better prices. read more

Awesome breakfast yesterday morning. The team of people Douglas has put together was just a superior experience yesterday. We were fortunate to sit at the counter which is at the front of the house. Perfect location to see efficiently working staff, expertly prepared food and happy faces of new patrons either being seated or grabbing a cup of java as they wait for a table. One of the signature menu items is a house baked English Muffin. We were able to enjoy a house made sausage patty layed on a bed of marshmallow soft scrambled eggs which were both placed over a nest of greens. On the menu as "Go Home Thomas". They have a great variety of items to chose from and are open seven days a week. Ciao.... All is still great at "Toast". Great service and very tasty menu options. read more

How does this place get good reviews?!? The service is fine, but the food and drinks are terrible. We aren't food snobs so please trust me when I say this was the worst meal we've had in Portland. Bloody Marias were watery, flavorless, and salty with one piece of limp, anemic celery and and an olive for garnish - no spice, no tomato flavor, no trace of alcohol. We very apologetically exchanged them for beers because they were undrinkable. Two people got the "simple," a play on avocado toast with egg and a spicy cilantro chutney. Everything was bland. The avocados weren't very ripe or spread across the dry, barely-toasted toast.The side sausage had no flavor whatsoever - just chewy meat. My husband's base piece of toast was 2.5 inches of bread with the butt end - burned on the bottom. I got the breakfast sandwich with bacon, goat cheese, eggs, and field greens. Didn't see any goat cheese and it certainly wasn't hiding under the 4 pieces of arugula. Again, it was super bland without even basic salt and pepper. The bacon was the only redeeming thing on the plate. It came with a potato hash that all of us tried and none of us could eat - slimy and confusing. They have two hot sauces available - each very distinct. The better of the two, the carrot habanero didn't pair will with anything we ordered. The waitress kept calling me man and consistently talked to me like a "bruh" which wasn't at all professional. She never even introduced herself or gave her name. They only had one bathroom and it was gross. The trashcan was filthy and had a lid on it that didn't open with the foot pedal, so I had to grab it barehanded to open it. Toilet had a sign that instructed you to move handle back to position after flushing. While eating my table wobbled back and forth repeatedly as I cut my dry, and practically flavorless eggs benedict. To top it all off, there was barely any hollandaise sauce on it. The potatoes were soggy, burnt and inedible. For the price of this place, you're alot better off going to the Screen Door for the same money. It's the same cost but the food, service and establishment are at five times better than this dump. To be honest, Toast is an embarrassment to the area. As a concept restaurant - apparently its dishes based on the presence of toasted things - it was, well, odd. I ordered the Big Ass Breakfast Sandwich (classy name, huh?) and, when it arrived, I wasn't sure exactly how I was supposed to eat it. It was the thickly sliced and toasted heel of a loaf of artisan white bread spread with cream cheese, topped with two slices of bacon, two eggs over easy, and three sizable leaves of lettuce. With this came another thick slice of dry toast (not the heel) and some very tasty and well seasoned hash browns which they called a rosti. Now, had this been your basic breakfast of eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast, this would have been a five-star review, particularly considering the excellent friendly service I received from the smiling waitperson. As it was, knowing that, if I tried to go all Guy Fietti and eat this as an actual sandwich, I would end up wearing it, I just ate it in pieces, chasing the pointless lettuce around the plate as I went along. It was fine overall, though I did ask for butter as I'm not a fan of dry toast. The price for this was reasonable - $13.50 for breakfast and often refilled coffee - but, next time, I'll ask for a larger plate and to hold the lettuce. read more

I'm guessing Toast was meant for people finer than myself. I don't know. We sat in for a short bite while waiting for our car to be worked on across the street. We ordered light because we didn't expect to be there long, and we only needed a fortifier: my brown-eyed girl got a serving of house-made toast, and I got an English muffin. We each had a coffee and fruit to share. On the upside: the quality of the ingredients was redoubtable. The coffee I found quite good. The English muffin was superb, if a bit small. The fruit was as close to fresh (and the berries pleasantly tart) as you can get for a neighborhood bistro. The jam provided? First class. The wait for them I just can't figure out though. I remarked to my companion for it to take that long, they must have started from scratch perhaps. The establishment was not overrun, it was hardly breakfast or lunch rush. And I guess I'm glad that they just didn't dash it out at us. But twenty-plus minutes to get toasted bread and a toasted English muffin just don't make sense, son, unless the artisanal bread is toasted in some equally-artisanal way. But, mesdames et messieurs, it was the butter that sticks the hardest to the memory. Not that it was hard ... it was at the perfect consistency. And when asked what kind of butter it was, the waitress said 'Darigold', which was a good answer ... it just didn't square with the taste. And I hate to cast any sort of aspersion, but that just wasn't butter. It tasted more like margarine. I am a gourmand, true enough; an Nucoa-American of the solidest kind. And I'm reluctant to cast casual aspersions, as I said. But I have tasted butter too; the spouse refuses to let anything else in the house. She, in the realest of ways, dotes. She loves little more in life than the taste of true butter on the tongue ... and we have eaten enough Darigold over the course of our lives that any cardiologist worth their M.D. would tell us to walk it the hell back already. That simply could NOT have been butter, for true. Being a Nucoa-American, I ate it fine; It went well with the jam. And the muffin, itself, was superb. But try as I might, I can't convince myself that was butter. Toast is one of our favorite breakfast and brunch spots in the SE. They make everything from scratch and they are damn good at it too. It is difficult to try everything on the menu because every time we come here we are craving one of the things we have had before and fell in love with. Luckily they change things up on the menu enough that eventually we are so intrigued by one of the items that we simply must try it. There can be a bit of a wait here on the weekends, but I assure you it is worth it. We are very lucky to only live about a mile away from here. Even if we didn't, this would still be very high up on our list of favorites. If you've never been here before you are simply missing out. Went here for breakfast with friends and we were all happy with our breakfast choices, minus the gray-ish hashbrowns. My friend and I tried the Badass Sandwich; great bacon, goat cheese and fresh arugula on thick toast. I added a side of hollandaise; amazing. The others in my group tried the Enter the Dragon dish and another tried the special; I can't remember exactly what it was, but it involved pork belly and pico de gallo. I tried the special and it was delicious! I would get that next time I came in. What I would NOT get again are the hashbrowns; limp and gray are not appetizing descriptions to use for food but it's the case here. From the other pictures on Yelp and the menu, the "rotsi" is a sort of potato pancake so that's what I expected. Instead, my friend and I that ordered the Badass sandwiches got a blob of undercooked mush that was once a potato. Skip anything that comes with a rotsi or ask for a substitute side and you should have a great experience! Lastly, our waitress was so friendly and attentive without hovering; perfect! read more
