I have been wanting to check out the latest Toca Madera location, especially since this one is in my own backyard in Houston. I've been to the one in LA, Scottsdale and Las Vegas. I did a stat strike at the Thompson so this was the perfect opportunity to have dinner here. Parking is easy with valet, they have a valet stand as you turn in off Allen into the hotel area. The entrance to the restaurant isn't well marked, they could use another sign pointing which way to go. You walk up a set of stairs and enter the main front walkway. It's nice with foliage and a water feature that you walk over. The decor inside is stunning and truly beautiful in design and quality. The front staff are a smidge pretentious but it kind of comes with the territory in places like this. We arrived shortly after 5:30 on a Friday night with 3 in our party. We were able to get a table relatively quickly which was a plus. Happy hour is Monday, Wednesday Thursday and Friday from 5-7pm in the bar or lounge only. They had seating available in both areas. Our server Christina was attentive and explained the menu well. We decided on the Seabass tacos, chicken tinga tostaditos, tuna caviar, calamari, chicken enchiladas and truffle Mac n cheese. Seabass tacos were my favorite. They were fried pieces of Seabass, high quality and really hit the spot. The calamari was a miss for me. Just tasted like frozen fish sticks nothing really wow which was a bummer. The chicken tinga tostaditos had 5 small bites to a serving, and easy to share. They were way too spicy for me though and kind of ruined the next few bites of my meal because my mouth was on fire. I must give some props to our server though bc she noticed right away and offered to replace them with something different or take them off the bill. The tuna caviar I was excited to try but they fell a little flat. They were a tad bland and just overall not impressive. I prefer the ones in Las Vegas at the Bellagio Petrossian bar. They would have been better with a little cream sauce. The chicken enchiladas were solid, but at $40 that's pretty steep for most people for a basic dish. The truffle Mac and cheese is standard Mac and cheese. For desert we ordered the brown butter cake and the strawberry tres leches cake. The strawberry tres leches cake was incredible. I would go back just for that. Delicious sauce, amazing texture, creamy and lovely diced fruit. Just outstanding. The brown butter cake not so much.... If was hard and just not really something I would get again. It's no mastros butter cake if you know what I mean! That's the gold standard on that dish. The manager Jordan stopped by and was nice and welcoming. He mentioned there was a speakeasy in the back that opened at 7pm. They serve drinks in there and a smaller desert menu. I was also told the fire show started at 7:45pm that night. We didn't stay that long but show is always enjoyable. I enjoyed my visit but some of the dishes were a miss. For the price point, they should be more consistent. I would go back for happy hour for the tacos and tres leches desert though. read more

The starters aren't out of this world but they are worth trying. We tried the Wonton tacos pretty good but I'd recommend another appetizer. The raw bar - Hamachi was 10/10 I recommend!! The sauce was so good server said he drank the sauce when he first tried it lol it's that good! The meat options are their highlight. They have a good selection of Japanese Wagyu on the hot rock which are sold by ounces. We tried the flight of 3 which was 2 oz of each (a5, olive, & Kobe) 10/10 The dessert we got a free brownie because of my friend birthday. Then we tried the brown butter cake they swear it's the best ever per our server lol & it was pretty damn good. Personally the brown butter cake was amazing but I prefer rich flavor or chocolate so next time I'd do the strawberry tres leches or the mousse cake. Service was super attentive but a bit too much we got interrupted a lot & had more time after paying to talk. I would've preferred to have more time to talk while we are waiting for the food. The Winnie the Pooh cocktail is super good I recommend! Made with chamomile this is 10/10 I tried the Guava margarita & it was ok.. couldn't taste guava I know it's a hard flavor but expected better. I attended Toca Madera last Saturday and I must say, we had a wonderful experience!!! Everything from the architecture, the aesthetic, the food, the dj, and even the restrooms, were beautiful and really blew us away! The service was great and plentiful- there was always a server nearby in case we had questions or needed assistance. The restaurant was filled with people. Was it noisy? A little, yes, but that was mostly due to the amount of people and various conversations being had. Nothing that was overbearing or excessive. I honestly think everyone was really just excited. Now to the food: Complimentary chips & salsa - (9/10) the salsa was super fresh! Not too spicy either, just right and set the perfect tone for our night Appetizers: Tostaditas with short ribs (9/10) come with 5 small tostaditas to share. The flavor was great! My only gripe was that they were a little on the cold side however the flavor profile was great Main Course: Petit Filet ordered Medium(10000/10) - so good! Super flavorful, tender, and just down right delicious! They did ask if we wanted any additional butters to accompany our meal but ,personally, I feel the butter that comes on top gets the job done! I honestly could go back for this alone. Arrachera Tacos (9/10)- these were listed on a separate mini menu. Once more, the meat was super tender and the additives (jerk marinade, pineapple, crema , etc) really accentuated the flavors of the steak and meshed really really well together. Also, each taco (2 total) came with a lot of meat and was very filling Sides: Cilantro Lime Rice ( 8/10) Street Corn (8/10) The two sides were equally good, nothing out the ordinary, but nonetheless still paired well with our meal. Dessert: Churros (6/10) I'm not a huge churro fan but decided to try to get the full experience. Our churros came out very hard. I was expecting it to be a bit more softer in the inside. Nonetheless, it was worth a try but I'd try a different dessert next time. Drink: Mexican Candy fire shots 10/10. Delicious and was an added touch to our magnificent dinner All in all, I had a wonderful experience and can't wait to book my next reservation! I came here for my birthday on the 19th at 8pm with a reservation (of course). Overall, I had a great time. It's dimly lit and there's a lot of people walking around, taking videos of the fire shots and listening/dancing to the DJ. I ordered a glass of Riesling, the short rib tostaditas, and the 6oz steak medium with truffle Mac and cheese and street corn to share with the table. The food was very delicious and well seasoned. Our waitress, Avery, was also very nice and attentive. My only complaint is that it was my birthday, and they never brought out the complimentary cake/sparkler. I felt corny for asking about it but when I saw others get it, I decided to ask someone (not my waitress) who promptly apologized and offered 2 fire shots. I wish I would've asked for the dessert we purchased to be comped and for the complimentary dessert to still be brought out. It really killed the mood and I felt a little slighted by the fact that the hostess acknowledged it but the waitress forgot. I really love Toca Madera. I've visited the Scottsdale and Hollywood locations multiple times so I was really looking forward to this grand opening. Our server Abigail was very attentive and provided excellent service. The ambiance and vibe was the same but the quality of the food was lacking. Every entree that we ordered came out lukewarm if not cold. I'm hoping that it's just the kinks of opening night. Drinks: Mi Serrano: was so good and refreshing. The mix of the spice and cucumber is perfect. Papasito: Their take on a smoked old fashioned. My husband said it was good. Fire shots: just a must for the esthetics Food: Calamari: was probably the only thing that came out piping hot. Good flavor nothing to write home about. Top Cap Steak with Jumbo Prawn: Good flavor but didn't come out hot. Luke warm at best. Lobster: Tiny and cold. Good flavor but for the price expected a better size for the price. Highly anticipated after seeing the many videos on instagram. As another yelper recently stated this review is based off the true experience not a comped pre-opening party. Unfortunately I was very disappointed and let down by the restaurant on my birthday last Saturday. I booked prior to the opening. The restaurant insisted that 6 ppl was the maximum so I had two separate reservations made. Closer to the date I asked if it was possible to increase the # of guests at one table since they'd been open a couple weeks. They declined. I asked if my two tables could be beside each other they said no guarantee. I cut my list down and unfortunately couldn't invite all my friends. Fine. Two weeks prior I was graciously allowed to adjust my reservation time from 5:45 to 7:30pm which was a more suitable dinner time. The employee (maybe hostess) I spoke with suggested this time so that we could be seated and settled "before the 8pm show, that way we could see the 8&9pm performances during our 2 hour table allotment." As we were being seated I asked if I should face a specific direction to have a better view of the show. To my surprise The hostess said oh we don't have shows at this location. After speaking with them multiple times over the last 25 days and being advised what times the shows were. "Every hour in the hour beginning at 7pm" supposedly. After we received our dinner our server was mia for about 30 mins. No chance to order more drinks and did not return after offering to go boxes. We had to request dessert menu from a passing by staff member. Once we ordered and were just chatting enjoying each other we noticed furniture being rearranged for a LARGE PARTY directly across from us. After dessert I was asked how the experience was. While the food and drinks were phenomenal. The design stunning and pleasing. Nothing can overshadow the fact that I was lied to numerous times by multiple employees of this establishment. The poor apology from management after I calmly expressed my frustrations. As we both looked at the table of 11 or 12 directly across from me. He said " yes I'm sorry we flew in performers from the other location for the pre opening, but I can give you my card so you can call me to personally reserve you a large party and come back." I am not sure how coming back with all the people I had to exclude on a day other than my birthday while they still would have no fire dancers or performers of any type would help. The issue isn't that it wasn't available it's that there was no reason to lie about timing etc. when the job position hasn't even been filled. Tried toca for the first time I give it 4/5 stars. The ambience was great. I wish it had a teeny bit more lighting though lol. We started with the complimentary pico and OMG it was SO good. I loveeee pico. We also got the queso dip without mushrooms, it was pretty good if you like cheese! Thennoble margarita was very tasty and refreshing. I thought it would be spicy, but it wasn't. And for my meal I got the Cesar salad which was 5/5 and HUGE. Now it's spicy, so if you don't like spicy food then do not get it. Not pictured because I devoured it, but for dessert, I got the brown butter cake and it was FIRE!! So good, OMGGG! Queen was our waiter and she was wonderful. I have nice things to say about the service and ambiance, but there were a couple (3 actually) of absolute deal killers for me. 1) my vehicle that night was an F-250. The valet said they would have to park it in "VIP" due to the height. There was no offer to self-park. $30 cash or Venmo in advance! Ok, I didn't put up much of a fuss, but I did mention it to the door hostess. After I was seated, a very nice manager approached me and shared her concern, but I still paid $30. Normally I wouldn't even mention the price of the F&B, but wait for item #3. My 8oz center cut Ribeye was $108 and my nephew's 8oz Top Cap was $152. Sooo not worth the $32.50/oz price tag! Now for Item #3...an unmentioned 20% Service Charge of $82. My fault for not scrutinizing the receipt before adding yet another $82 Tip. The waiter did a great job, but no waiter is worth $164 on a $410 tab pre-tax. Needless to say I felt robbed by both the valet and restaurant. read more

We first experienced Toca Madera during their complimentary seating before opening, and it's been a go-to for us ever since! From that day forward, I've consistently ordered the East Los cocktail and the Hamachi Crudo--both are absolute must-haves. Beyond that, we've enjoyed a variety of dishes, with the Tomahawk steak, enchiladas, and strip steak being some of our favorites. And of course, we never skip the Ghost Rider Flaming Shots--they're such a fun, show-stopping addition to the evening and always a highlight of our visits! Here's the kicker: I absolutely despise tomatoes, but I devour their chips and fresh salsa--it's that good! Toca Madera is always our top choice for special occasions, thanks to its fun and lively atmosphere that's perfect for celebrations. A quick heads-up, though: watch out for the dress code. My husband once wore a nice sweater shirt (not collared) and was initially turned away at the door. Thankfully, we know one of the managers and were able to make a call, but it's something to keep in mind. The enforcement seems to vary depending on who's working the door. Also it can be hard to get a reservation. We do pay for the monthly membership so we can usually get in on most any day which is a huge perk! Even though we have a reservation, we usually have to wait at least 10 min for a table, sometimes 30+ min but the time passes quickly bc the vibe is so fun at the bar area. Overall, Toca Madera offers incredible food, great drinks, and a vibrant vibe. Between the amazing dishes, the Ghost Rider shots, and the energetic atmosphere, it's always a memorable experience. As much as it saddens me to leave a negative review, I have to at this point. Starting on a good note, the atmosphere and service was top tier. Our waiters were very attentive and helpful as far as guiding us through the menu. As this was our first time having a girls night out, we really enjoyed the scene and the experience of Toca. However, everything went to a downfall when one of my friends found a screw in her to go box from the food that was ordered at our visit. She has tried to reach out to management, but no answer for this to be such a high class and one of the so-called best restaurants in Houston, I would think management would be on top of any sort of comments or complaints that any patron brings to their attention. I am disappointed in Toca and most likely will not plan to ever go back to this restaurant. To think that a service of packaging your food to-go leads to a possible inhalation of a wood screw is disheartening. read more

We had a 9:45 PM reservation--confirmed with a credit card on file--yet weren't seated until nearly an hour later. When we asked what was going on, we were told it was a "busy Saturday night" and that they were waiting for people to get up so we could have a table. That's not a reservation--that's a glorified waitlist. It was clear we weren't the only ones frustrated. Other guests were visibly annoyed, pacing, and complaining. This wasn't a one-off issue--it was a poorly managed, overbooked mess. For a restaurant that tries to present itself as upscale and exclusive, the experience was anything but. It was chaotic, unprofessional, and disrespectful to people's time. If you care about your evening, your guests, or any special moment--go somewhere that values its customers. Genuinely some of the worst service I have ever experienced in an establishment. Food was good, but definitely not worth it. Slow and avoidant service, unorganized, incorrectly boxed food returning to the wrong people, all with no apologies. Parking was an entirely different story. My group paid for parking in their provided lot out front ($10 an hour, and we paid for 2 up front). Our service ended up taking longer than the allotted time we paid for, so when we tried to add more time via link, it wouldn't allow us. (It said to see text confirmation to add more time and we were never sent one.) We left the table to confirm with the valet, as well as the front desk before even continuing dinner. Valet affirmed it would be no trouble, and the front desk offered no helpful info whatsoever. Following those conversations/ 30 minutes later, we find a ticket on our car for almost $70. The restaurant was no help in sorting the issue out and couldn't provide help to navigate the problem. read more

Walking into toca madera, I had an open mind due to the fact that it hasn't been open for that long. We had a reservation for 8 Pm on a Wednesday night and it was pretty busy. We only waited about 5 minutes to be seated and we were greeted by our last name. We started off with the queso fundido which was okay. Wasn't really a fan of it and had way too much onion. For myself I got the prime NY strip and the wife had the branzino. The steak was probably one of the best steaks I had in houston. The sear was amazing and was cooked to perfection(medium) My wife also liked her entree. We got the mac and cheese as a side also street corn(both really good) but mac and cheese had truffle which was okay. The reason I'm giving 3 stars is because the lighting is super dim. It's really hard to see the menu. Another thing is the music was super loud to the point where it was hard to keep a conversation. And to make it worst the tables are really close to eachother. If I had stretched my arms I would've hit both tables next to me. The service was good, they came around enough and the server did a great job at explaining the menu BEWARE:There's a 20% service fee ? I like the ambiance that was created. I think the focus of the restaurant was mainly that. While the food was good, I don't think the quality matched the price. It was average Tex-Mex. The drinks very good though and so were the churros. The main entrees and appetizers lacked salt or more flavor, idk. But it just gave very average Tex-Mex. The fire show was cute. For the guest complimentary birthday dessert it should say "happy birthday" on the plate. That would be cool. I love it here! I've come for both brunch and dinner. These photos are from brunch this past weekend. I went on a Sunday and there was no wait, which was a nice surprise. The French toast was enormous and you'll definitely want to order some sides to round out your meal. It was so big that I was able to enjoy it more than once. We also tried the pancake, which was more like a banana bread pudding baked in a cast-iron skillet and topped with plenty of fruit. I also ordered the chicken and waffles, and I really enjoyed the sauce on the chicken strips. It was sweet and flavorful. I'd definitely come back again for another meal! read more

All the parking is in the back of the building. You can self park and pay by the hour or valet for $10. I don't like that when you valet you still have to walk all the way around to get to the front, especially because it was raining and the walk way was not covered. We sat in front by hostess waiting for more people in our party to arrive to be seated. They want at least half your party to be there before seating you. While I was waiting, there were drops of water falling on me from the ceiling. I'm not sure if it was from the rain or condensation of the AC, but I was not too fond of that. Aside from the leaky ceiling, the ambience and decor is very nice! Very tropical/ Tulum type vibes. We had a party of 10 and sat in one of the private rooms. On some nights they have shows, but they didn't have one the Sunday I went. We had two people helping our table and they came by often. The guy offered us water when we sat down and asked if we wanted still or sparking. We just wanted regular water and said still. (I'll get back to this later). They bring fresh made salsa and chips complimentary to the table to snack on. That salsa was very tasty! The menu is a La carte style and expensive. Even all the cocktails were about $20+. I ordered the guava martini since I love guava and the waitress said that was their strongest drink. I expected more sweetness with the guava but it was a little on the tart side. My friend got the Como La Fleur drink that had a cool display with dry ice. That was entertaining. For an appetizer I ordered the chicken Tinga tostaditos. It comes in an order of 5. I enjoyed them. I ordered the seared salmon and a side of cilantro lime rice for my entree. I loved the flavor of the salmon. It was cooked perfectly and that butter sauce was divine! The portion, however, was small. Even the sides are small portioned. I don't think two people can share their sides. The bad part about having a large party at this restaurant is splitting the bill. They only do 4 cards split evenly, so bringing cash is a must. Not all of our party brought cash and it was a hassle to figure out how to split it because not everyone ordered the same amount of food and drinks. Of course, No one wanted to pay more than what they ate so splitting evenly was not an option. The only solution was to have one person pay the entire bill and we zelle them our portion. Here's where the bill caught us off guard! They charged us $55 for water on the bill! We drank 5 bottles of the water they were pouring us and no one knew that they were $11 a bottle! We thought the water was complimentary and they never told us that it would be that price when we sat down. We would have asked for tap. I thought that was very sneaky way to charge people and not make them aware. You would not catch it unless you pay attention to your bill. We had them remove that charge since we were not notified in advance. Overall experience was ok. Food tasted great even though the portion was small for the price. This was such a wonderful chose for birthday brunch for a medium sized group. I had the avocado toast and it was really filling. The staff is so sweet and knowledgeable and the service was efficient once the full party got there. The only thing was the cutting that's per person. We took the cake out took pictures and put it back to avoid that. But the app is really cool and that discount for signing up was a great surprise. The atmosphere was so calming and the pictures in the bathroom hallway were amazing! Love the environment. Will definitely be returning. read more
