If you're treating friends for something special, Toca Madera might be what you're looking for! From the beautiful floral entrance to the intimate forest-y interior, the restaurant is quite beautiful. We came with low expectations as our friends love the hype, but they were happy and we enjoyed most of the food, so it was a nice night! Prepare your wallets when dining here, as you're definitely paying for the experience and vibes, but the food is also thankfully tasty. Toca is between a restaurant and a club, with more emphasis on the restaurant side. They're open late, people dress to impress, and the music is on the louder side. There are exclusive menu items that are only available for people who pay a membership fee. I didn't like how there were staff in the restroom waiting on patrons for tips. They were super nice, but I go to the restroom for privacy (a little awkward taking out your Invisalign retainers while someone waits next to you holding up a paper towel, haha). Onto the food! Starters: I really liked the spiced chips that came with the complimentary chips and salsa. The Hamachi was sliced thick and was tasty, would order again. We would skip the Ceviche Blanco next time even though it's pretty, as the tiny bits of fish were hard to eat and the flavor was okay. Sides: Mexican Corn was simple and nicely balanced-- not overloaded with cream or cheese, mostly sweet corn flavor which we enjoyed. The Truffle Mac n Cheese was very creamy, the taste was fine for us and nothing exceptional, but it was nice to have a hot dish. Cilantro Lime Rice tasted like... rice! Nice to have with the mains as it wasn't oily. Mains: the Scallops were beautifully presented and enjoyable but wouldn't say they were the most tender or had a nice crisp on the outside. The Flaming Tomahawk was very showy, wheeled to the table and lit on fire. The guys actually thought this was one of the best steaks in town! It was tender but had some chew, and no sauce was needed. Our tomahawk, priced at 40 oz, definitely looked a lot smaller than the other photos though. The Branzino was my favorite-- big fillet, nicely seasoned but not too salty, and it wasn't dry at all! Dessert: the Churros were one of my favorites of the night, they were hot and soft in the middle with a slight crunch! Definitely didn't need any of the sauces that it came with. The Strawberry Tres Leches was surprising too, as it looked and tasted similar to a strawberry shortcake and was delicious. They comped a brownie a la mode that came with a sparkler for our special occasion and that was also pretty good. Drinks: per the group, nothing stood out but nothing was bad. Our waiter asked if we wanted bottled sparkling or bottled still water and did not mention plain tap water (you know... the one in the pitchers that I saw being served at other tables?). Luckily our friends like Acqua Panna, but that irked me. It's the principle! Parking is valet for $10 and tip or pay to park which is $5 per hour... which turns out to the same since you're limited to 2.5 hours for dinner anyways. And they stand by it-- we were politely asked to finish up and leave. Is the food good? We thought so! Was it great? The Branzino, Tomahawk steak, and dessert were delightful, but everything else was a solid okay/good. Is it worth the $$$? Probably not, but if it's the ambiance and memories you're after, this one might fit that bill :) I would return if my friends wanted to, but Toca was nice to try just once for me. read more

Interesting, gorgeous, vibrant atmosphere and very, very loud. We had to yell at each other and we sat next to each other at the bar. Service is attentive, friendly, knowledgeable and not intrusive. Nice wine list. Food was a complete fail for me. I found it a little annoying that some drinks, wines and menu items are only available to members. We inquired about membership and were told someone would come by and explain it. That didn't happen. I have no idea what's involved with a membership. I'm just leaving from Toca Madera...I have never ate at a restaurant that made me feel uncomfortable. The food was good but the service absolutely sucked! First off we are from out of town...the minute we walked in....there was a guy looking at our clothes to see if we were dressed appropriately...you can tell from their dress code ..that we unaware of intially...they don't want "urban looking" people in there... my husband outfit had a hoodie attached to it. We were not aware of the dress code...so he said something about it...but they let us in....but I watched a guy walk in with an actual hoodie on his head...and they didn't say anything...I'm guessing this person must be "somebody "...anyway...we asked about this fish that's normally served in the evening time...the chef agreed to make it for us...but when we asked about the branzino the waiter told us the price first...then when we checked out he asked us if we were putting it on 2 cards...he gave us one ticket...why would we need two cards....he barely checked on us...I think they are trying to cater to a certain crowd...you don't know who has money to pay for whatever...the food was good...the service sucked and it made a place that esthetically could have a great ambience...stiff and uncomfortable. So at a recent happy hour downtown we were looking for a place to try and impress a visiting employee in hopes of getting them to relocate to houston. So we came here - on a side note unless you enjoy driving in circles looking for parking just valet it was $10 during happy hour so the cost might be more in the evening still in line with most valet costs. For context we came on a tuesday after work - when we got in you would have thought it was the weekend. Completely packed we were standing at the bar until we could get some tables at the same bar. Everyone was dressed to impress - it felt like Vegas in Houston. There are some things on the menu that you can only order if you are a member - so there is a membership available. The atmosphere with the music and the people was awesome - you're definitely paying for the atmosphere. It was fun to go with a group of people - I am sure the drinking helped a little but it would be easy to imagine having a great time just enjoying the meal there with someone else. Everything was very clean including the facilities. Its definitely a very instagramable location. For what it is here in Houston I think there is good value - prices weren't too crazy. I expected our bill to be a lot higher then what it was. If you haven't already made plans - this place is worth checking out with some friends - you'll all be sure to have a great time! First, the only reason why I am giving it 3 stars is because the price did not justify the food/experience at all. If the price doesn't matter, then you could enjoy this place. Valet - very simple and easy. No issues at all. When I left the restaurant, I got my cars within minutes of handing over my ticket. You can park outside the valet area, but it costs $5/hour, whereas valet is $10 for the whole evening. Doorman - Lovingly. They were willing to take our pictures when my party was outside. Decorations - Great Live music - Someone was playing an electric guitar and going around the restaurant playing it. It was interesting to see and fun. Service - Got seated quickly. No issue. Waiter - Ehhh. While he was super nice and knowledgeable about the food, he had offered for the chefs to decide on what we wanted instead of what we wanted to order. He also would come to our table very frequently, attempting to take our food away when it was not done consuming. He also would jump in and offer the next course of meal when we were only half way done eating. Food - Good, but not great. Especially for the price. $20 cocktails... Honestly, you can get a cocktail in SoHo for less than that price. It was refreshing, but not worth $20. Still water for $11 per bottle. Yes, for $11. It's not even any fancy water, and it was in a non-descriptive bottle, making me think that they just refilled the water in-house. I had their salmon, which was $38. For that price point, I expect something to be unique about the salmon, but honestly, the way it was cooked with no seasoning other than the sauce, I literally could and have (multiple times) made the salmon the exact same way at home. Nothing special. Though their tres leches were really good, I would get that again. The appetizers are great, but they're worth sharing with other people in your group to taste all. Birthday dinner reservation for 2 people was set for 10pm, we were not seated until 10:40 pm. When we arrived we were told it would be a 15 minute wait, which obviously turned into a 40 minute wait. We were screwed because most places closed by 10 pm so we couldn't even go anywhere else nice for dinner. Anyways the food was okay, we ordered the chicken on stone, branzino (salty) and the truffle fries which were the curly fries from Jack n the box covered in dried parmesan cheese (you cannot convince me otherwise). The best part of the meal was the strawberry tres leches, presentation of that dessert was very pretty and it tasted decadent and filling. Very beautiful, elegant, aesthetic, unique restaurant and bar. My friend and I came on "taco tuesday" and were bummed because we had just missed the time cut off- but anywho we still had a wonderful time. We kept admiring the decor and how attractive the restaurant was. Since it was Tuesday they had a DJ and a fire dancer! They have a great selection of delicious, unique cocktails. I had the winnie the pooh and it was perfect for my sinus hahha. All of our food was fresh, hot and delicious. Of course, nothing made me say "WOW" for the price but I cant complain because it was served hot and fresh and presentation was beautiful. My only small complaint was that while the server was very attentive and kind, we did feel very rushed. I understand there may be a turnover and I do think we saw an 1-2hr limit? But we wanted to enjoy the pace of our food and did get drinks, appetizer, entrees and was catching up with a friend I dont see often so that's honestly why but overall great service. They do offer 2 types of valet -price wise so the difference is just that one is parked closer or farther and there might be a small 10-15 minute wait but wasnt too bad. I really wanted to like this place but I am disappointed. My boyfriend had reservations set a week in advance for Sunday night at 9:30pm. We arrived on time but were told our table wouldn't be ready for another 30 minutes, so we decided to sit at the bar. After 30 minutes, no one informed us about our table, so we asked and ended up waiting another 30 minutes. Finally, an hour later at 10:30pm, we were seated. I did not know this until I read some yelp reviews (afterwards) but they ask if you want still or sparking water. Not giving tap water an option since they try to upsell you for a bottle of still water being $11 fyi! Our server was kind, but I wished she checked on us more often instead of us having to wave her down, especially since there's an automatic 20% grat added to the bill (just so you know). The food was mediocre and not worth the price for the taste nor portion. After waiting an hour, my boyfriend's steak wasn't to his liking. He asked for it to be sent back, and although the server was nice about it, we expected a manager to apologize, which is the bare minimum in a fine dining restaurant. Not to expect anything out of it but just to know they care or even apologize for the one hour delay on our reservations. After finishing my own steak and sides, his finally came out by 11:30pm. We ordered 2 Margaritas (at the bar for $55), Hamachi appetizer ($26) Sweet Corn ($15), Truffle Mac & Cheese ($21), Two 8oz Center Cut Ribeye ($216 for 2) and Brown Butter Cake ($22), totaling $400 just for food. We don't mind spending money to experience hot spots, but for that price, it wasn't worth it. You can get a better-tasting steak elsewhere for a better price. My favorite dish of the night was the Hamachi appetizer. Just making sure everyone is aware of the mediocrity and price point, including the automatic grat. Overall, the ambiance was aesthetically pleasing, but I was not happy about the wait even with a reservation and the food. Parking: Valet was the way to go here. Enter off of Allen Parkway. It was fairly reasonable at $10. I left my phone in the car and valet was kind enough to grab it for me. It was quite busy Saturday night so be prepared for a lengthy wait if you're coming during dinner hours. There is quite a lengthy walk from valet to the front doors of Toca, so for ladies in heels or those with accessibility needs, I definitely recommend getting dropped off right near the entrance. There's a friendly gentleman near the stairs that can help you get up and down as needed. Ambience: The first word that comes to mind is sexy, modern, and natural. I loved the use of the woods and the compliments of the natural grasses and plants. The dim lighting elevated the ambience, however it was still difficult to read the menus even with the aid of the table light. Also with all of the fiery drinks and dishes served, the smokiness of the air was a bit thick at times, so if you are sensitive to that I'd suggest sitting outside if it's available. Service: This was where most of the points were docked for me. Despite having a reservation and being on time for it, my party of 4 still waited over 40 minutes to be seated. It seems that although Toca has a 2 hour dining time, they do not enforce it. We were waiting on tables to be cleared who had patrons sitting there for 4+ hours. On top of that, we were not offered any additional accommodation to rectify this issue. As a first time patron, that stung, and was a sign that management still has some things to work through. Food: I loved the tacos!!! They were the best two bites ever, truly. The shells were crispy and and the lobster was seasoned and buttery. The Branzino was light and flaky, you could literally eat it with a spoon, that's how soft it was. If you're not that hungry, it's enough to share among two people. The cilantro rice was meh, Chipotle's is better in my opinion. But it complimented the Branzino nicely. My friends enjoyed some mocktails, cocktails are roughly $20, they deducted $2 which I thought was useless. However, they seemed to enjoy them. Overall, I would say Toca is a great vibe, however I left feeling like I didn't need to come back. The experience nor service was something overly exceptional for me personally. Everything took so long: 1) to be seated even though we had a reservation, 2) to order drinks and appetizers, 3) for the food to arrive, 4) for the bill, etc! Hard to understand the reason with all the staff they had working! When you have been to restaurants with great service, you know the difference! Our waiter was more attentive to tables with "his people " than others. Other tables did not seem to have this problem. When it finally arrived, an hour later, the food was pretty good, except for the salmon which came to the table twice undercooked. The ambience is loud which some may like if that is your thing! The fire show was excellent and it was nice to see the flaming drinks go to other tables. However this is not enough for me to come back. My first visit to Toca Madera was in July. It was a VERY busy Saturday of 4th of July weekend. But it was a great time (even if we did have to wait 30-40 over our reservation time for a party of 2). However I wanted a grown and sexy intimate celebration for my 40th birthday and TC made top of my list (Happenings described below are from yesterday, 8/24). Although I'd already been I still like to read reviews to see if there's anything that's changed, especially with a newly opened establishment. Sure enough most of the reviews I read were regarding service, extended reservation wait times, temperature, and the DOORMAN (Dress code police). Because it was my birthday I was really hoping that me and my guests wouldn't have to endure any of these recently posted challenges but sure enough we did. 3/5 guests had arrived at least 20 minutes before our 9:45pm reservation. Hostess said we had to have the full party, that was fine, typical. We go outside for photos and guests #4 walked up and I could see the look on her face as I'm standing underneath the tree getting photographed. Immediately afterwards I asked was she okay and she'd told me that one of the guys standing at the steps was abrasive with her while asking if she had a reservation. Ugh. So now we're back in to wait for guest #5, my SISTER, who phoned shortly after that confirmed she was parking. My friend advices the hostess, as we wait were wondering what's going on because she never comes in. So she calls and says "Sissy, they won't let me in because of my shoes. I have to leave." I'm heartbroken truly because none of my guests are rule breakers. I was specific about dress code, timing, parking, etc., I wanted them to be prepared. My cousin scans the lobby and there's literally a lady inside with some fuzzy house shoes on, so she goes outside to try and plead for my sister. I follow after (it was hot in the lobby and hot outside and I was dazzled up but my sister needs to be in here). The cousin speaks to the dress code police guy (which we later learn was the same guy who was abrasive with my friend) and tells him that he literally just let in a woman with house shoes on. He looked "shocked" but definitely in a "ha ha who cares" type of way. My sister had on sandals, she's about 5'11 and doesn't wear lots of dressy shoes and you could barely see her sandals because her black dress pants covered her feet (she had on a black blouse) but certainly dressed appropriately. I've been to many restaurants with dress codes, I'm a Houston native we know how to be presentable at upscale establishments. So my cousin told the guy she had a photo of proof and he allowed her in but not before saying "The hostess is probably going to turn her away anyway." Tuh. What a jerk. We're back in now. I expressed my frustration to the hostess and she was very apologetic (and to me seems that she knows this is becoming an issue) and said my sister was good. Time for us to be seated. But it didn't end there yet. We were being seated in the main area on the booth wall that leads to the bathrooms and they made a 4-top a 5-top, where 3 would be on the booth and 2 in chairs. This was a complete joke. No space at all for 3 grown people. So we had to wait again because I was not accepting that. Finally we're seated at table 506 (I believe) much better according to the hostess best table in the dinning area and is typically highly requested! FINALLY, some real birthday treatment. But as we sit and wait I see multiple guys come in with graphic t-shirts and hats, yes, basketball style hats! But then I see that door man standing at the door of the private room, guarding I guess but being very chatty with these guys. So my question is, whom does dress code apply to exactly? All in all this is not about ambiance or service or food quality or staff friendliness because none of this was an issue for us. Even the manager stopped by and he was super nice. I hope TC does better with the door person regarding dress code policy, we would have felt better if my sister was turned away if we had we not witnessed so many others definitely in violation. We ordered lots of food and for those who had never been were highly satisfied and we were given free shots. Still an amazing night. Maybe once things calm down some of the issues such as wait time and door guards will subside. I'll probably visit again but I'll give it a while. read more

We were charged 44.00 for water...just regular water, we were charged for four bottles and I have no idea how much we drank but with our cocktail drinks I'm not sure how we could have drank four large bottle of water. Wife and I decided to goto Toca for drinks, apps, and dessert. Grabbed a seat at the bar immediately despite the restaurant being busy. We went for the first a few months ago for our anniversary and enjoyed it so we decided to go again on a whim. Fernando the bartender was great. Very knowledgeable about wine and the menu. Service all the way around was A+ even as the bar. Overall the food was amazing. The only exception was the calamari. Tried it and didn't care for it, they took it away and didn't charge us. Thank you. We ordered the chicken Tostaditos (A+), hamachi (amazing), the wagyu bacon wedge is why we came back! My wife doesn't eat pork and can't experience the joys of a good wedge...until now. This is the best wedge I've ever had. We wrapped up with the butter cake, not quite Mastros', but an excellent #2 in my book. Toca didn't disappoint and we will be back! I enjoyed the food and the ambiance of the restaurant. Our reservation was for 6:15 pm, when we arrived we had to wait about 10 minutes, however the restaurant was not full at all. I also enjoyed my watermelon margarita, it was very refreshing. It was my birthday and I received a free dessert of a brownie and ice cream. We also ordered the butter cake and it was just ok, the best part about it was the brown butter sauce. Overall I would come back for a special occasion. Upon arriving to the restaurant lastnight the doorman denied my wife entry and stated she did not have on business casual attire (refer to picture) she indeed did. I called the restaurant to let them know we were denied entry; as they charge you if you do not show for your reservation. The manager I assume ;was shocked and stated she will meet me out front. She apologized and tried to explain that they are a new restaurant but what was concerning was the same doorman let others in before and after my wife that were indeed not in business casual. He stood there smirking while she apologized for him & he said nothing. As you guys can see from the many reviews they pick and choose when they want to provide good service. this concerns me being a lgbtq couple. I would hate to think that was the reason. After entering, It seemed as though the hostess was waiting on me to greet her. Weird. She had very low energy. As we waited for our table I noticed a male walking out with a shirt that read " thick as f*ck" but this is business casual? (& yes he was exactly what your wondering) Another male walked in after us with dirty vans on and white denim shorts and a wrinkled white top. Came here for a group brunch (13 of us) and honestly wish we'd gone elsewhere. I'd already heard mixed things, but the tacos were surprisingly good and the French toast was rich enough to share. That said, everything else about the experience was awful. Service was hands-down some of the worst I've had in Houston. Our server was checked out from the start -- water never refilled unless we got up to ask, multiple orders were forgotten (including the birthday girl's), and the check had items we never ordered. Took 30+ minutes just to pay. The place wasn't even busy, so there's no excuse. They also tried charging a per-person cake fee even though we brought our own cake and cut it ourselves. After nearly 40 minutes, the manager finally fixed it. For the prices they charge, you'd expect basic competence and decent hospitality. Food was fine, but the service completely ruined it. I'm going to go against the grain here and give my review of Toca Madera from the perspective of someone who paid a $235+ tab on their opening night. Not as a guest of their opening party or getting their meal comped. The vibe is without a doubt sexy, fun, and exotic. You feel expensive walking in and are surrounded by a DJ, fire, and excited energy. The cocktails were also delicious. Some more than others but I think that comes down to preference. I enjoyed each cocktail I had. For $20-$25 a pop, I would hope that's the case. There is currently no happy hour- again not stated anywhere online. For the food: Queso was pretty good. We live in Houston, so nothing extraordinary, but it passed the check. My $50 steak came out ice cold. I didn't send it back because 1. The server never asked how my steak was. 2. I was starving. The Mac and cheese was dry as a bone. I mean literally there was not even a cheese pull. For $18 Mac and cheese, not okay. The title also says "truffle Mac and cheese" on the menu. Apparently- truffle Mac and cheese does not come with truffle. So I was charged an additional $22 for fresh truffle. The server said she communicated this to me- I was not clear on this because I assumed it being in the title it would be included. I never asked to add the fresh truffle. The manager came over and spoke to me about this. He seemed a little skeptical/condescending. Which in my opinion is unacceptable- especially on opening night. He did offer our table 2 free shots to make up for it, so that was nice. My friend did not enjoy her sides, and she ordered tacos and tostadas. Her tostadas never came, but 2 orders of tacos did? I believe they comped one order of her tacos, as they should have. Dessert was really good! We got the skull filled with peanut butter mousse. Time to pay the bill. No splitting checks and no cash. We tried to plan for this by looking on the website and that information was no where to be found. I can understand with larger tables, but this was very frustrating considering it was only 2 people. To top off the evening, as I'm walking out the server stops me and says my card was only approved for a partial amount? I showed her the notification from my bank that said approved, and matched the amount on my receipt. I guess they took the truffle and Mac and cheese off, but another check in the system still has it on there because it was a $20 difference. I ended up giving her another $20 to cover the Mac because I was over it at this point. Side note: for all of you excited about the fire dancers: they dance for about 20 seconds every hour. They only dance right by the DJ booth so if you aren't sitting over there, you won't see the show. The employees were also crowding around this area talking/watching, making it difficult for paying customers to see. I tagged Toca Madera on instagram stories letting them know I had a very unsatisfactory experience. They saw the message but chose not to reply. To me, this speaks to their customer service. I've been to many very nice, vibey, restaurants all over the country. So I know what should be expected when paying over $100 per person at an "upscale restaurant". Toca Madera was a whole experience. The restaurant is a dimly lit romantic ambiance with beautiful trees throughout the restaurant and golden accent pieces. The outside patio was gorgeous with greenery hanging from the high ceiling. Dishes were delicious especially the Calamari that had fried jalapeños mixed in. The Enchiladas and street corn was a hit as well. The Mi Serrana and The Noble Margarita cocktails were spicy good. The fire performer was really talented and was one of the highlights of my birthday dinner. My only complaint is when I walked in the hostess seemed not interested to greet me. Stood there for a while for them to finish having a conversation and when one eventually had the time to assist me, I was interrupted and she started talking to a group of women behind me. When she seemed back interested in figuring out my reservation information I had to start back from the beginning. Made me feel not welcomed at first and made me nervous about what the rest of my experience would be. Our waiter was great and made me feel more at ease the moment he introduced himself. read more

Finally had the opportunity to visit while in Houston. The drinks and ambiance were really delightful but the food was subpar compared to the price. The portions sizes didn't match the cost. I'm from New Orleans so I can get Bette food at a lower marginal price. I would recommend this place for a special occasion but that's about it. read more

My boyfriend and I went here for my birthday dinner last night. We waited for 30 minutes to be seated? When he finally asked the front desk she said that they had been texting me, but that was false- we we're standing infront the whole time... anyways, I got my petite filet with Maine lobster which was my favorite; the crust outside, tender steak, and lobster tasted fresh. My boyfriend's NY strip was overloaded with butter, not sure what happened there. Their Winnie da Pooh cocktail was loaded with ice chips with 7 sips of?
