There really aren't that many Taiwanese restaurants here in Irvine so with the limited options, this place does offer good food to fill that craving! I definitely would recommend eating in store rather than take out as I find portions are slightly larger with sit in dining. I got the Fried chicken fillet rice and Baked boneless chicken thigh, which both had great flavor but were both on the saltier side. The proteins were not good on its own due to the saltiness, but pairs well with the rice. I also got a side of the Taiwanese sausage which came with garlic dip. It doesn't have the classic Taiwanese sausage taste you get from a good food stand or night market in Taiwan (not smokey enough) and the garlic dip can be a bit strong for some. read more

There's really not enough Taiwanese restaurants in Irvine! Was having a serious lu ro fan craving so found Tofu King and was very satisfied with my experience. The lu ro fan is a pretty good portion for the price, was perfectly fatty with all the sauces dripping on top of the rice. Loved the tea egg and pickled veg addition, I'll come back for this dish! As for the other dishes, I ordered this sausage and sticky rice small dish, which I couldn't try because it had peanuts. It didn't have any mention of peanuts on the menu, so we told the waiter that but unfortunately he couldn't do much about it. This is by far, the best stinky tofu I've ever had in California. Tofu King has been a personal favorite for many, many years and I'm so glad they take credit card now. I admit, I haven't been here in some time - but the food was just as I remembered. Deliciously Taiwanese. We went for lunch and it wasn't too crowded - service was fast and food portions were plentiful. Both coworker and I took some food to go, as we couldn't finish everything. I got the crispy chicken with rice and stinky tofu, he got the minced meat rice (lu rou fan) and a side dish of chicken. I will say, the stinky tofu tastes much better if you pair it with the vegetables AND sriracha. The flavor made me feel like I was back in Taiwan, if only for a little bit. It would've been an even better experience if the room was cooler, but we don't mind coming back once it's fixed for a more comfortable visit. Tofu king is an authentic Taiwanese food place that for me is considered as a soul food place. Me and my friend loves the food here, some of our must order are: fried stinky tofu (soosooooo good), the minced pork rice with braised egg also a must order, I love the meat ball and their sauce as well, my friend loves the sticky rice with sausage and she always order this. There are quite abit of different selections but every time we come it's hard to make decisions coz we want everything and of course we always end up over order! This is a mom and pop store very down to earth and the server was very polite, but the whole entire time we only saw one server for the whole restaurant including serving all the tables and prepping for to go order, it was abit hard for us to flag him down. I haven't found any good stinky tofu places in OC yet...all pretty mild...still looking. The pork thick soup with rice noodle is ok. Needs a splash of black vinegar. Tried the mushroom sliced pork rice with egg (no onions) and some wonton soup to-go as well at a relatively decent price for the two dishes, however, the portion size is on the smaller side. Keep in mind we asked for no onions but the wonton soup didn't come with noodles, and had cilantro in it which was unfortunate. Not quite sure if there's another menu item with noodles. Nonetheless, both dishes still tasted great even though the egg was on the drier end and slightly on the greasier side but definitely would probably have to give other dishes a try. Location is in a busy plaza so sometimes parking may be tough to find, and since it's located near the corner with not a ton of space for parking, ended up finding some parking near the back side. The soup is so flavorful and delicious. The beef quality is also excellent, and the noodles do not disappoint. I also had the Taiwanese pork chop over rice, the rice came with the authentic minced pork and sauce, I, who do not eat a lot of rice almost finished the rice, and the side veggie was good too! This might be one of the most authentic Taiwanese restaurants that I found in Southern California. it has a humble interior and all the customers and staff spoke in Mandarin. The menu items include authentic Taiwanese foods that I rarely see elsewhere in the United States. I strongly recommend the braised pork rice and really enjoyed the mala stinky tofu. The meat was flavorful and tender, the pickles were nicely seasoned without being overly sour. And the braised egg was seasoned extremely well without being too salty. The stinky tofu was fragrant and soft. I do prefer stinky tofu with a stronger flavor, but this one was still very delicious. The soup on the other hand was really tasty was a nice sour peppercorn and pickle flavor with a great kick to it. Upon walking into the restaurant to get a strong smell of stinky tofu which proves it's authenticity. While for some, this is an acquired taste, for me, It brought me back home. Overall, if you're looking for a truly authentic Taiwanese restaurant experience at a reasonable price point I highly recommend tofu king. Truly authentic Taiwanese food is hard to come by in the US and as it is often times opened by non-Taiwanese people who modified the taste and include menu items that you wouldn't see in Taiwan. read more

Love love love fried stinky tofu with the pickled cabbage and hot sauce! Yummmm taste of Taiwan! Be sure to ask for extra sauce (the brown sauce that comes with the tofu) so you soak the flavor in before taking a bite. WARNING: if you're not used to stinky tofu, just be prepared because some people say it smells like really stinky feet But trust me, stinky tofu is supposed to be stinkier than this... This restaurant toned it down here because we're not in Taiwan So if you want the real thing, stop by a night market in Taiwan and you can eat this all night long. I love the Taiwanese sausage too, ask for extra garlic. Also I always get the beef noodle soup, and Rou Yuan (the meatball thing). Occasionally I get the squid noodle soup and the intestine wrapped sausage. I think the menu is pretty small. I really would like oyster pancakes and especially oily rice added. Oily rice would bring back so many memories of Taiwan for me. And Taiwanese rice dumplings would be amazing too (southern TW style). Disclaimer: I've never had stinky tofu before so I can't give a defenitive rating on it. If you're adventurous and want to try a true delicacy, then stinky tofu might be the next food you try. This was my first time trying stinky tofu all because my friend decided today was the day to do so. Tofu King is known for their stinky tofu, but also serve other Taiwanese rice and noodle dishes that complement the delicacy. I already had expectations of what to be prepared for, but walking into the restaurant my sense of smell was assaulted like walking into a wall of fermentation. You quickly get adjusted to the smell after a few minutes, but be warned your clothes will reek. To be completely honest, the stinky tofu wasn't for me. The tofu itself doesn't smell as bad as the air you're breathing. The taste is definitely acquired, there is a strong strong fermented taste with every chew. I also ordered the fried chicken fillet with rice so at least I'd have some rice to eat with the tofu. It was good, the chicken was flavorful but I wish the corn had some more seasoning or flavor to it. Service is fast as well, so it's a pretty quick in and out. read more

We had a large party and the lady working the front was very accommodating. We ordered a good mix of appetizers (stinky tofu both versions, beef rolls, onion pancake, and cold appetizer plate). For entrée I ordered a Dandan noodle for myself. Appetizers were nice. The beef roll, for me, was only average. It didn't have enough of the sweet sauce that I typically enjoy in beef rolls. I'd say this one was more of the savory/salty side. I'm not a huge fan of stinky tofu but I can eat it. The stinky tofu was pretty good - we got both the more soupy version and the fried version. I enjoyed the fried one more because of the crispiness and the sauce with pickled veggies. Dandan noodle was decent - pretty nutty but wasn't really spicy. The peanut flavor was very strong and the portion was good that I ended up with leftovers to take home. Overall I like this place. My family orders takeout from Tofu King on a weekly/bi-weekly basis, and we always get the Fried Chicken Fillet and Fried Pork Chop. Sometimes we will also get the Fried Chicken Fillet Rice and Fried Pork Chop Rice, Beef Pancake Roll, or Onion Pancake. Service is good and it feels like an old Taiwanese restaurant, very nostalgic. I do want to note that I want the best for Tofu King.
