I used to really like their food until today, either they changed chefs or owners because the food tasted horrible. The beef in the beef noodles was tough and gamey, the radish was raw ( crispy). Came to Bafang Dumpling one weekday night and they were pretty busy. At first there were no seats, so we ordered to go, but then a table opened up so we ended up staying to eat there anyway. We waited about 20 minutes for the food which felt a little long, but not terrible considering how packed it was. They are more of a togo kind of place The potstickers were my favorite. The thin size and the texture make them so fun to eat, and they had a really nice crisp on the bottom. I could honestly just eat those on their own and be happy. I got the special Lunar New Year set which came with their signature dumplings in beef noodle soup. The broth was really good, rich and comforting, but I actually preferred the potstickers over the dumplings in the soup. Still tasty, just not my personal favorite style. This is our go to Taiwanese restaurant on busy nights. They recently added pork chop rice to the menu and it's only $10 and it's delicious, authentic, and homey. Their pork chop, in my opinion, is the best tasting in California, reminiscent of the Pork Chops King in Taiwan that I really missed but have retired. They are not the same but closest to my ideal favorite that I can find in California. I love their spicy noodles and perfectly fried dumplings as well. I love their sauce of the spicy noodles. It has a very unique taste that's different than the spicy Chinese noodles at other stores. Their place is always kept pretty clean. The people there are usually pretty friendly. Located in the same strip mall with 99 Ranch Market at Jeffrey and Walnut near Fwy 5, this is a convenient location for people in Orange County. While I'm here for pot stickers today, but their braised beef noodle is equally famous. I'm also interested to try the new item on the list: pork chop with braised pork rice. I arrived 2:30 to avoid the lunch crowd. They have several tables of guests but no long line. The young man taking orders was courteous and efficient. Not that it's expensive but it's low quality and not that cheap. I ordered the Combo #3 ($14.95) that came with 6 Signature Potstickers and 6 Signature Dumplings and my choice of a soda or soup. I opted for the hot and soup soup. They give you a pager that goes off when your food is ready. There was limited seating and it was really cramped. Self serve on sauces and utensils. I didn't see staff cleaning my whole time there. When I got my food I initially excited to try it... but biting into it was disappointing. Both fillings were more cabbage than meat. Super blandddd. You know, if the fast food chains that we have around here were more like the fast food chains in Asia, I imagine that the typically negative reputation that so many of them have would be rosier. I know that might sound hyperbolic, but much less so when you consider folks in Taiwan get to enjoy having the likes of Bafang Dumplings so readily available! Funny enough, even though my gf was already familiar and a fan of Bafang from her previous visits to Taiwan, what actually brought us here was the fact that they were one of the only places in the area that was still open for us to grab a late dinner when we got into town. That being said, despite our circumstances being the main reason why we came here, I certainly would've been curious to check out a "fast food noodles and dumpling chain". Of course, it didn't hurt that the menu didn't look too shabby. Although it may not be ridiculously extensive, it has all of the important things - beef noodle soup, sesame noodles, dumplings, potstickers, and more! -- SIGNATURE POTSTICKERS with Pork and Napa Cabbage Filling These were terrific! Each piece was pretty sizable and had a perfectly golden brown crust on the bottom. Also, I really liked how juicy and delicious the fillings were. -- BEEF NOODLE SOUP I was cautiously optimistic for this one and it didn't disappoint! The noodles were cooked well and I thought the beef was really juicy. I do wish the broth had a bit more body/richness to it, but it was still rather beefy and quite flavorful. -- OLD FASHIONED NOODLES Ehh...this was fine. On the other, the pork was surprisingly moist and the seasoning and overall flavor was great. -- BAFANG SIGNATURE DUMPLINGS with Pork and Napa Cabbage Filling Just as classic as it is good. The dumplings were pretty plump and the filling had a good ratio of pork to cabbage. However, the best thing about these were the skin - just the right thickness and they weren't the least big soggy or overcooked. -- CORN & CHICKEN DUMPLINGS Not as good as their Signature Dumplings, though, to be fair, I'm not as big of a fan of corn & chicken dumplings. While the skins were still fine, the filling wasn't as impressive - somewhat bland with a stronger taste of corn than chicken. Compared to what you can get from one of the many Taiwanese restaurants around, Bafang's noodles and dumplings do have a bit of a "previously frozen/mass produced" feel to them. However, the food here is still pretty solid for what it is and undeniably convenient for a quick meal, whether you're looking to dine in or grabbing your food to-go. This may not be the first place I'd look to hit up again when I'm back in town, but I definitely wouldn't be opposed to coming back for more. We tried: Signature Noodles, Veggie Dumplings, Spicy Mala Noodle, & Chicken & Corn Potstickers. I love that they have a self serve sauce bar that has soy sauce, garlic soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, & a spicy sauce. I'm removing one star because the service was meh. When we walked in, no one greeted us. They just waited for us to approach them to order. Then, once we were eating, I spilled my soft drink and they just pretended like they didn't see me struggling, instead spacing out while looking through the windows. We really enjoyed bafang inside of the brea mall, so we were glad to see that they have a brick and mortar location near heytea. Bafang seems to be super accommodating when ordering. We ordered the combo 8. They let us sub the noodles and the protein. We ended up with the sesame noodles and the chicken cutlet. We also got an order of the corn and chicken potstickers and the veggie dumplings. Everything tasted great. The sesame noodles needed a bit of vinegar and spice to really elevate the flavor, but thats provided for the customers. The sauce that came with the cutlet was fantastic. Bafang is an order at the counter and then sit-down type of restaurant, and it wasn't very busy, so we were able to find some seating inside! From looking Kathie menu, it seems they offer a lot of dumplings, potstickers, and noodle dishes. ~the food~ - Signature Dumplings: I really loved the dumplings here! They were super juicy and flavorful on the inside, and the dumpling skin was on the thicker side, but it added a "homemade" feel to them that I really enjoyed! I think this could've been elevated by some sort of sauce (besides the self-serve soy sauce, vinegar, etc), but I still enjoyed the dumplings! - Mala Noodles: The noodles had a nice chew to them which I really liked, but the flavoring wasn't my favorite. I feel that it was missing that mala spice and was a bit oily. I think they could revamp the flavoring of this noodle dish, but not too bad. I initially ordered these two things separately, but the staff kindly offered to customize Combo #4 to my order, so my total was cheaper than I was expecting! Bafang has quality noodle soups, even though they specialize in dumplings. The beef is super tender, and the noodles have a good bounce to them and I'm a noodle connoisseur. Broth is hearty without being overly salty or greasy, which is important to me. Love the daikon radish and the broth and the mustard greens. I'm a huge fan of mustard greens and soups because it cuts down on the grease and it's a good balance of ingredients. I've only done to go here, but there are plenty of tables to dine in. Staff is friendly and efficient, even when it is super busy. This is a popular dumpling chain in Taiwan that has been opening locations in So Cal and I'm so happy that there's one in Irvine now. It's in the busy 99 Ranch plaza so parking can be challenging. But they have online ordering so if you time it right, you might find parking just in time to pick up your food. The restaurant is clean and bright with tables for dining in, although a lot of people do take out. My go-to is the Combo #8 ($16.50) with Chili Pepper Fried Chicken and Old Fashioned Noodles. The chicken is crispy and reminds me of Taiwanese popcorn chicken. It pairs well with the chili sauce which is what gives it a spicy kick. The noodles have a subtle sesame soy flavor, but are good for eating with the saltier food. The combos come with a drink but they don't have teas here yet sadly. Another favorite are the Signature Pork Dumplings ($12/ 12pcs). They're juicy and filling. The Signature Potstickers ($12/ 12pcs) are also not bad. But they're thin and if you take them to-go they don't stay crispy. Between the two, the dumplings are better. I like to buy a bag of their frozen ones to have at home. Fast food dumpling place. Small dining area. The big, comfortable tables are for invalids only, while the rest are awkwardly arranged around the toilet entrance. It's just strange to eat directly in front of a restroom--very odd seating concept. This is definitely a fast-food joint. The cashier is friendly but has zero clue about the menu. Don't even bother asking -- they'll just tell you they "don't know, they just work here." Also forgetful -- you'll get asked to repeat your order at least twice. The food box showed up dirty. Off to a strong start. The Taiwan beef noodle broth was way too sweet, the noodles undercooked, and the beef and daikon came in giant blocks like they didn't have time to chop them. The daikon chunks were literally the size of my fist. The dumplings and potstickers were a disaster -- mostly raw cabbage with a bit of minced pork tendon thrown in for decoration. Every bite was fibrous, bland, and oddly firm. Same filling in both dumplings and potstickers -- just different shapes, same disappointment. Half the potstickers' skins were broken, and the sauce dispenser barely worked. You press like crazy, and almost nothing comes out. Ten minutes later -- fast food in, fast food out. We came on a Saturday for lunch at the beginning of October, and the place was busy. But the line moved quickly and the cashier was very patient with everyone. We got 2 combos- combo 8 (pork chops, dry noodles and a drink, $15.50) and combo 7 (dry noodles and mini wonton soup, $12.75). We e also got some potstickers and a box of mixed appetizers.
