For some pieces, the rice was too warm while the sashimi was cold. That combo was not what I would've expected from an omakase spot. After trying a few affordable omakase spots, I can confidently say that Toka has the BEST VALUE so far, in terms of the number of courses, the quality of the sashimi, and the overall dining experience. We didn't feel rushed at all and the interior was very spacious. They're currently offering 30% off through the end of December, which means you can enjoy their $98 18-course omakase for just $68, with a no-tipping policy. They also offer other tiers, including 13 courses for $58 and 16 courses for $78. My favorites: - Miso Black Cod - super buttery and tender. - Scallop with Hokkaido Uni - hokkaido uni seriously leveled this up. - King Salmon - meaty, fresh, and packed with clean flavor. - Otoro with Caviar - melt-in-your mouth buttery - Toro Handroll - the crispy onion added such a nice crunch. They started the meal with a trio of appetizers (yellowtail sashimi, beef tartare, and miso cod), which added a nice variety. What really surprised me was how generously each piece was sliced. Unlike many cheaper omakase spots that torch almost everything, they let the freshness of the fish speak for itself. Sure, you don't get a ton of chef interaction or fancy toppings at this price, but honestly, I have zero complaints for what you're paying. This review is for their Omakase special I saw that their omakase special was ending on Oct 31 so wanted to try it out. I was easily able to get a reservation for 2. The special is $98/person (tip included) for a 13(?) course omakase and then an AYCE portion from 6 options. Also unlimited either dry or sweet sake, and beer. For the AYCD, they give you either the can of beer or a little carafe of sake. Overall, the experience was good but had some areas for improvement. There was good diversity in the pieces given and they do deliver on the promise of AYCE at the end. One issue that was evident was that there was inconsistency in the size of the pieces given. There were 3 chefs and some people had much larger fish pieces depending on who their chef was. Also, a handful of our nigiri was falling apart when we got them. The amount of wasabi also varied significantly between pieces. For the AYCE portion, one of us got a large order of wagyu and many of the pieces came out pretty raw since they didn't torch the pieces thoroughly. They did torch it more upon request. From sit down to end of meal, it is a pretty smooth experience and I did not feel rushed at all. The chef started us off with the standard 13-course at a good pace. We finished that in 30 minutes, leaving us ample time to enjoy the AYCE part of the omakase. There's 6 nigiri choices, which you write down on a piece of paper how much of each piece you'd like and you can only order once. I made sure I did not go overboard with my order since I hate feeling overstuffed for the sake of value. The chef worked quickly to make everyone's pieces. He catered to our palate and gave us extra wasabi to add for our liking and was generous with the pickled ginger too. Had a 6:30 reservation, and as you're seated the chef greets you and shortly after you're offered drinks. I had two different types of Sakes, a house and a yuzu one that I preferred, but they also have beer. They start the 14-courses pretty quickly. My favorite of the 14 courses was the spanish mackerel, but there was not piece that I didn't love. Everything was fresh and melted in your mouth. I did about 20 pieces of the AYCE portion and I could have done more. I love eel, and I'm glad that they included the unagi in the AYCE portion since it wasn't part of the original tasting portion. They also made sure my Sake was filled at all times. Service was super attentive. One thing I would say is that although they put that gratuity is included in the price, when getting your receipt there are still suggested tipping options at the bottom. I thought it was sus when I smelled a fishy stench the moment I stepped into the restaurant. My favorites of the night were the squid nigiri and toro handroll. Least favorite was the Spanish mackerel (WAY too fishy). Now for the grand finale - the highly anticipated AYCE part! You're given a paper with 5 different types of nigiri and you write down how many of each you'd like. Here, I ordered a bunch of wagyu and toro nigiri. The wagyu was decent, but not as tender as some A5 wagyu that I've had in the past. Something that rubbed me the wrong way was that the website states tip is included in the $98, however when the bill came, we were prompted to provide a tip. One of the best deal in NYC is this all you can eat and all you can drink Omakase for $98 per person. All Nigiri's are fresh as should be with Chef explaining each as served. I just can't even describe it. It was so good so fresh and everything just had such a great flavor profile that I will never be able to eat normal sushi again. They also do and all you can eat, and all you can drink sake pairing with the entire experience, which I think is really fun so we had a few sake that we could try which was really delicious and our waitress was so fun because she just kept pouring more into our glass if she saw that we were getting low Then all you can eat portion they have you write down how many pieces of sushi you would like for each different type of fish and I will say don't go too crazy because if you don't finish yet, you have to pay per piece of sushi that you don't eat But if you do go with a group, it might be OK because the group could finish it for you So since we came on our birthday, they also gave us a cute little candle in our desserts and they also gave us a little birthday present, which was a really adorable keychain so I would totally come here again. On top of this, they also have a AYCE portion, so you really get your money's worth. 03/2025 AYCE omakase was a new thing to me and after seeing so many videos on social media about this place, I decided to give it a try. Went on a Friday soon as they opened and I guess since it was the first slot and not busy, all the fish were cut on the spot. We noticed that for the second slot, the fish was precut, most likely because it is a lot busier. For $88, you have 1hr 15m from the time of your reservation for the omakase and order from the AYCE options. You can order 2 pieces of the unlimited options at a time and the wagyu option is limited to 1 piece. We enjoyed the experience, the fish was fresh and we liked that the AYCE options offered were not the pieces served in the omakase. Ended up eating extra 10pcs. Our favorite were the lean and the fatty tuna. A very interesting one was the eel. The eel was served with foie gras and PARMESAN CHEESE! What an interesting combination, but somehow it worked. Although the nigiri was not memorable (except for the eel), I have to say the appetizers were really good. The desserts offered with the omakase were amazing! Hojicha pudding and a yuzu cheesecake, both very refreshing and delicious. The restaurant is big and they have counter and table seating available. Service was extremely attentive and friendly. I found myself here once I saw the menu for their Valentine's Day special and was immediately interested. I had seen their videos around Instagram a couple times and had always been interested in the menu so I was thrilled to finally make a visit here. The special was a $78 7 course menu. First off, shoutout to Julia for making my experience here so great! She was the absolute sweetest and you could tell she really wanted people to enjoy the food and experience here. We chatted for a bit and got to try their yuzu sake as well - it's homemade and you must try it because it's delicious. There were a lot of yuzu elements within their dishes which I absolutely loved. Everything I had, I wanted more of. The only downside for me is that the portions were a bit small for the price in my opinion. I did leave still a bit hungry. I think it would've been great if there was a bigger portion of the pasta or another dish. The food and service were great so I don't regret it but I would have to opt for an a la carte menu perhaps next time. That aside, I truly did enjoy the food and here's what I had: 1) Hokkaido Scallop Sashimi The scallop was cooked perfectly and just felt like it was melting on my tongue. I loved the how the yuzu brightened up the sauce as well. 2) Toro Tartare This was a top dish for me. I didn't want it to end and the tartare was so silky smooth and rich that I had to eat slowly to savor it all. 3) Miso Black Cod Nothing beats a classic miso black cod! Their mustard sauce was a great addition as well. 4) Deep Fried Snow Crab These crab legs were fried to perfection in my opinion. I just wished there was at least 1 more! 5) Clam Miso Soup I enjoyed this but I almost wish it came first and had some more spunk to it. It was the most "normal" item on the menu for me. Still delicious however and I could really taste the clams I. The broth. 6) Squid Ink Pasta I wanted a whole bowl of this one. Even without the uni, I was loving the yuzu and Parmesan sauce with the squid ink noodles. I've been inspired by this one to try and make a similar sauce. 7) Dessert This one came with a matcha cheesecake and yuzu cheesecake! No conpmaints here! It's a good value for AYCE omakase, but the flavor fell short. There's no single piece that wows me. There's 90mins seating time, start with 10 nigiri and two handrolls. That was done really fast, then you get to order the AYCE, but you only get to order limited options and you can only order once. My girlfriend won a giveaway for this spot, so we showed up to an amazing omakase experience on a Thursday night. All of the nigiri was fresh, glossy, and overall very solid - using Chinese rice which is a bit distinct from typical Japanese sushi rice. This place also comes with AYCD sake which the yuzu sake tasted really good. What makes this place unique is after their usual course, they give you a slip with a selection of fish and we write down the number of each fish we want. It then becomes an AYCE sushi spot. I opted for a lot of unagi and Wagyu and they both satisfied my stomach so much. The unlimited sake and yuzu drink are good enough that I don't taste much water down although other reviewers said so. About raw fish, I have to say overall it was just ok as you get what you pay, especially you can ask additional pieces after regular 14 courses. The chef brushed a thick layer of sauce on every piece of fish. Therefore, after meal, I did feel a little thirsty. The restaurant embraces dark accents in decor that is not my favorite. Decided to walk in to give AYCE omakase a try. I think it was pretty worth it, but some of the flavors were lacking because they use the same 2 sauces for the regular omakase. I noticed that they used extra rice during the regular omakase set to sort of fill you up more before the AYCE portion. Worst Omakase Experience Ever - Don't Be Fooled by the "All You Can Eat" Gimmick This was hands down the worst omakase I've ever had. The "all you can eat" label is nothing but a marketing trick -- the quality is absolutely unacceptable. The fish was not fresh at all and completely flavorless. One piece of mackerel was so bad it made me feel nauseous -- I couldn't even finish it. It honestly felt like they were just serving whatever leftovers they could find. The sushi chef looked completely unprofessional -- the sushi was poorly made and totally unappetizing. Don't be fooled by the glowing reviews on social media -- they are completely misleading. Also, while their website clearly says no tipping, when you ask the server about tipping, they don't mention that policy at all and still expect you to leave a tip.
