Unassuming little sushi place in a strip mall... we weren't really sure what to expect. We arrived during "sushi happy hour", which means most of the standard rolls are cheaper than normal. Of course that means we got way more sushi than we should have, but we powered through and finished it all! In my opinion, the basic rolls (cucumber&asparagus, tuna roll, etc) were nothing to write home about. However, the sweet potato tempura was one of the best I've ever had, and the other rolls I tried were all really well made. This may become my go-to sushi place in Charleston! Was in the area for a seminar at the Courtyard. Found this place on yelp. More than passable casual Asian in the Japanese teriyaki style. Good friendly service. We got tea which was service hot in a large pot. What I like so much about Yelp is that I can quickly find locally owned places and enjoy a meal where I also support a local businessperson rather than some faceless chain. Excellent happy hour sushi. Most are only $3! Very friendly staff and not very busy. I enjoyed the quiet, low key vibe. I'm not sure why anyone would rate them lower than a 4. Especially for a strip mall type place. It's fairly inexpensive and the happy hour deals were great! So you definitely get what you pay for. Being in Mt. Every item we got from here was disappointing. Mongolian beef had mostly onions, all undercooked. Lo Mein noodles were so dry with no taste and veggies in it were undercooked as well. Anyways, they have Happy Hour prices on basic sushi rolls all day on Sunday and I like to take advantage of a good deal. The sushi is good... nothing amazing but good for the price. The vegetable hibachi is just okay. The seaweed salad is tasty as well as the crab rangoon. I think as far as take out goes it seems fresher than most places. I am fan and I think you should be too! It is one of our favorite places to eat at for dinner (especially when we don't want to spend a lot of money), and whenever we take a friend out, this is always the place we go to. Happy hour sushi is a fantastic deal! The sushi is delicious (the spicy tuna is my go-to) and the soups are a necessity. We haven't tried any of the other entrees, but if they are the same quality as the sushi, then there's nothing to worry about. The service is terrific and the servers are always so kind and engaging, and there is never much of a wait for food or service. We can get in and out with soups and a few rolls of sushi in about 30 minutes, if we eat quickly. read more

This restaurant is in the Walmart plaza, next to the Michaels. The inside decor was nice and clean, but the men's restroom definitely needs to be fixed. Things were dirty and falling apart. Like most of the Japanese restaurants I've been to in Charleston, the servers and sushi chef were Chinese. I ordered squid salad, white sakura roll. spider roll, and lobster lover roll. All 3 rolls were delicious. Since there wasn't too many other customers, the food came out quickly. The white sakura roll came out nice and hot, but took a little longer because it was fried. All of the meats tasted fresh. The squid salad was good. A little smaller than what I wanted, but it was nice because they added a little garnish of seaweed salad and a few pieces of cucumber to go with it. Nothing I ordered was too spicy. The servers were nice and attentive. They filled our drinks up quite a lot and pretty quickly. I'd go back. read more

I got a sushi delivery to my hotel room. The whole experience was just okay (not terrible but not great). First, the service was very good. Quick delivery, courteous worker, etc. However, the food was just okay. The fish was mediocre (not awful by any means but not especially flavorful), rolls were a bit rice-heavy and the rice didn't seem to be seasoned. The miso soup was good, though! Such an AWESOME find!!! Came highly recommended as I approached restaurant by people heading in. The staff was friendly, fast and on top of everything. The Sashimi was super delish and I am a conisurier of fine sushi. The TOKYO BISTRO ROLL was out of this world. Saki was warm and Sopporo was super cold. Just the way it should be. Anderson, Karry and Heather are the most elegant entertaining employees taking care of everyone. I never felt not waited on. They all worked as a team to make sure everyone was taken care of and happy. Decor is nice. Clean, modern and pleasing to the eye. I give the decor five stars. Food was fine for Charleston Chinese food. I.e., it was just ok. greasy and lightly salty. The wonton soup was very greasy. Also ordered the seafood "sifu" nest, which really was just Chow Mein. I was impressed by the amount of seafood in it. The shrimp was big and it had scallops, fish and lobster tail. As mentioned above, the quality was just ok. I give the food three stars. Btw, there was a hair in my food, but I'll get to that later. Service was good. Waiter managed four tables and he did a very good job. I give the service four stars. Management was horrible. The manager was also the hostess tonight. She was unpleasant to deal with because she cited restaurant policies that seemed to be made up in her head. I had a gift certificate with no restrictions on restaurant specials. It did have restrictions on combining with other coupons and having to dine-in. The restaurant was running a special at the time our party was dining for 1/2 off appetizers. The management would not let me get my entire party 1/2 off appetizers because I was using a gift certificate. Despite pointing out that the gift certificate had no such restrictions, the manager kept telling me the same thing, "sorry, that's our policy." So, back to the hair in my food. I have straight black hair. The embedded hair in my food was short and curly. When I pointed out the hair to the waiter, he apologized and took it straight back to the kitchen. The manager took the dish from the waiter and brought it back to me. She asked, "are you sure this isn't your hair?" I pointed out that my hair was plainly different from the embedded hair in the dish. I guess that's why she's a restaurant manager and not a detective. So, she reluctantly went back to the kitchen and a new hairless dish came out in 5-10 minutes. So, I give management a negative five. Yes, that's a -5. I will never eat here again and I will tell everyone I know how bad my experience was. read more

We got takeout from here while my wife was in the hospital recovering from a C-section. Maybe it was an off night or we got the wrong thing, but really the only thing I can say positive is that it smelled good in transport over to hospital. We both got the habachi chicken and really did not care for it. The chicken had this really gummy/rubbery texture that was very unappetizing and the food just generally didn't have any flavor. Didn't taste like any seasoning or sauces were added at all, pretty much void of flavor. The fried rice was also pretty bland and unappealing. I had the won ton soup - a bit salty, the dumplings - awesome, soft and flavorful, and the Hunan beef - full of veg. The waitress said my stir fry would have baby corn/peppers/mushrooms, it turned out I had asparagus, zucc, peppers and mushrooms. Hey, that's cool, stir fry was plentiful with veggies and tasty, baby corn or no baby corn. We ordered and our food came very quickly. We got the soups first then the rest of our food came all at once. We dined buffet style with everything out at once. Overall, we got all that food for around $40, a steal. Went for lunch this past weekend. I ordered the chicken teriyaki lunch box and my husband ordered the general tso's chicken. My chicken was basically grilled chicken with some teriyaki sauce added on top; the vegetables were really good, but the egg roll was strange--very fried and dough-ey. The "fried rice" had one little piece of egg in it. Despite all that it wasn't bad, just wasn't great. My wife and I came for lunch. We shared a spicy salmon roll for an appetizer. The flavor was great, but seaweed was very chewy, which was disappointing. My wife ordered the filet minion and chicken hibachi and I ordered the filet minion and shrimp hibachi. Mine came as a filet minion and chicken hibachi, so they recovered quickly and brought out 3 pieces of shrimp. The quantity, preparation and presentation were all a 8 out of 10. The quality of the filet and chicken were a 2 out of 10. Every piece of filet I had, except 1 had so much fat on it, that I couldn't eat it. If they spent a little more money on the quality and preparation of their meats, they would have gotten a 5 out of 5 from me. Service was above average, which I was greatful for! read more

Not sure how this has more than two stars. Decent service with nice people but the food is so bland and not good that it's just not enjoyable to eat in anyway. Maybe it's just the takeout food but got the teriyaki chicken and fried rice and it was the most bland fried rice and teriyaki chicken (if you can even call it that) i've ever seen or tasted. Great dinner with family the other night! It's nice to enjoy Chinese food at a sit-down restaurant instead of take-out once and awhile. We were quickly greeted and seated upon our arrival. Our server was great throughout the evening - checking-in and refilling our drinks as needed. The hot tea was $2.50, which seemed a little spendy. All of our meals came with a choice of soup or salad. We all ordered the salads - they are basic but fresh salads with iceberg lettuce (my favorite!), carrots, cucumbers, and dressing. I ordered the general tso's chicken - it was very good but could have used a little more flavor and spice. Others in my family ordered the chicken pad thai and kung pao chicken, both of which were very good according to them. I always enjoy eating at Tokyo Bistro. I feel like this restaurant is underrated in Charleston even though in my opinion it is the best sushi in the area. I've been to almost every sushi restaurant (from higher end like O-Ku to lower budget places like Sushi Blue) but this is by far the best. I only ever get sushi here, so I'm not sure about the rest of their menu - but I highly recommend their nigiri rolls (only place in the area that makes them correctly with wasabi between the fish and the rice) and any of their maki (like spicy salmon avocado). Also, I really love their creamy ginger dressing for the salad. The staff is always exceptionally friendly and professional. I live downtown, but am happy to go out of my way to pick up their superior sushi. read more
