i discovered the tempura don quite by accident at the newest sister location of tokyo express @ stonestown - overwhelmed by the vast menu offerings and pressured by the folks waiting in line behind me, i ordered the tempura don simply because i couldn't find tempura under the bento section. having never ordered "don" before, i was pleasantly surprised to find a fried egg, savory seaweed salad and a tempura-like sauce covering my rice - i was hooked. fast forward to last week when i was craving tempura don during the workday and remembered the original tokyo express i used to frequent in the fidi. i quickly called in an order and hurried over. once i got back to my office, i was surprised yet again upon opening the food container - but this time not so pleasantly. where's my wakame salad? instead, there were chunks of carrots and zucchini - some mushy, some barely cooked. just not the same. and the sauce tasted different. but most importantly, where was the tempura?!?!? at stonestown, i usually get 2 pieces of shrimp, 2 pieces of sweet yam (my fave!), and 1-2 pieces of broccoli, carrot and/or eggplant. fidi's a bit stingier - 2 pieces of shrimp and 1 piece each of yam, carrot and broccoli. wtf?! the beef teriyaki isn't as good as i remember it to be either. boo...if i didn't have stonestown to compare it to, maybe 3 stars but otherwise, i'll get my tempura don fix elsewhere. read more

Great lunch spot. Surprisingly fresh fish and nice rolls for a take-out joint. I love their unagi don - they make it the right way, complete with fried egg, yellow turnip and avocado. They're also hyper-efficient if you call it in, too. Plus its cheaper than Kamakura any day. read more

My favorite lunch place in the city. The sushi melts like butter. So fresh, so good. The sashimi is probably the best economical sashimi in the city. The people that work there are SO nice, even when it is crazy busy. And this place is crazy busy. But no matter how long the line is, you ALWAYS get a place to sit because the people who work there know how to get people in and out. I recommend getting the sushi combo plates and DEFINITELY get Jumping Tail roll (for a fried roll - cheap!!) and Dynamite roll (for a spicy one). The rolls rule. read more

It's not Anzu, or even Ebisu, but it's good for what it is: fast, cheap lunch food. i think part of the reason it is decent is they do a very high volume: all the fish is always fresh. their sister restaurant is Sushi Rika on Bush, BTW. read more

Not very good. I had the sushi special. It was pretty weak. Nothing tasted very good. But I didn't get sick and it wasn't really bad either, so I can't give them just one star. Steps to improvement: better fish, smaller menu, don't precut the fish, and keep it cold until served, not luke-warm. Best sushi in the Financial District/China Town area! I am vegetarian and have a hard time finding sushi rolls that aren't just plain avocado, or plain asparagus. I got the Tofu Crunch Roll and the Yam Tempura Roll, and they were both amazing. And they come with soup and salad all for around $10-15. You can't beat that! read more

They are super fast and efficient. food is okay, but the pricing are cheap. They have this special where you get 3 pieces of spicy tuna and 1 roll and it's only 9.99. I work right across the street. And whenever our boss was in town from Seattle, we would order in from Tokyo Express and pick up the food in about 15 minutes. They are extremely effective, at the point of seeming brisk...but it works for the type of service and food they offer. Speaking of the food, the sushi is surprisingly good for a place that's right on the border between FiDi and Chinatown. No real complaints, really. So why the 3 stars? Well...it's all a bit too fast paced and too rushed. I mean, it's all ok if I'm ordering out, but when I sit down for a meal, I don't generally like to feel the wait and bus staff breathing down my neck. Sushi is great here. Their miso has TONS of tofu in it. I've gone for lunch a LOT, and if you're lucky enough to snag a table (this place is PACKED), sit down. Cause taking it to go takes entirely too long. Nigori is great and the bento boxes at lunch are fabulous! read more

Ususally packed with FiDi employees, Tokyo Express is a great place to grab good and reasonably priced Japanese food. They offer weekday specials and most of their meals come with miso soup and salad. Portions are very generous. I suggest the tempura udon or the chicken teriyaki bento which are delicious and filling. Tokyo Express has their menu online so anytime you need to grab lunch, you can call in, place your order and pick it up 10 minutes later! read more

my friend trisha and i would meet up here for lunch quite often. they're fast, friendly, cheap and their menu is pretty extensive. sometimes it's hard to get a table, but people don't linger so there's usually not a long wait. i usually some nigiri and roll combo, so i can't vouch for the kitchen food. my other friend jane claims she ordered udon once and it was filled with little bugs...but i wasn't there and i don't usually try to judge on other people's experiences. but fyi. read more

I've been here several times and enjoyed the food, but today I treated myself to a bnig whack of my favorite sushi, and I am pleased to report that it was really amazing. Best Chicken Udon I've had so far. It's the perfect combination of savory (broth), chewy (fresh noodles), and smoky (chicken). A great place to grab a quick bento or sushi combo for less than $10, but nothing is as satisfying as their udon ($6.50) on a chilly day. read more

i dont noe about other companies, but at my office our lunch is about an hour long... and theres no way in hell u can come in, order, wait for food, wait for a table, and eat all in that hour... this place was wayyyy crowded!! i grabbed a to-go menu with me so the next time i eat here we can call/fax it in and actually have time to eat the food. maybe it was cuz i took it to-go, but the chicken was really really well done, and kinda burnt! and the salad was a little watery... but b/c they are so cheap for sushi (averaging about $6/roll) it gets an extra star! but i'm still glad my boss pays for lunch. read more

This is decent for a quick fix of Japanese food. I usually get the Teriyaki Chicken plate with tempura and a salad. You also get a small cup of soup when you seat down to wait for your food order to come. The food amount is good and is filling. I've been here several times with a friend. This place is pretty average. It's a pretty good place to stop by for lunch but I wouldn't recommend coming at 12. My coworker came around 1 for lunch and it was still super packed. I had to stalk a table to get a place to sit. Lets start with what we got. We got terryaki salmon with rice which was pretty good. It wasn't amazing but it was passable for a quick lunch. We also got this nigiri platter where the fish was pretty fresh. It came with salmon, tuna, hamachi, octopus, and some other fish I can't remember since I didn't eat it. Like said before, this place is a average go to place. Their prices are fairly reasonable because it cost around 20 bucks total for my coworker and I. Really it's nothing special inside but they do have a good vegetarian selection which is not always easy to come across in the financial district. I don't come here that often, but I was very satisfied with their Thursday special of a Shogun roll (Crab, Avocado & Cucumber, Eel & Tobiko on Top) and 3 spicy tuna rolls with miso soup and salad for $10 plus tax. In these tough economic times, it's not as crowded as it used to be which makes it a little more pleasant than before; there is some benefit to the plummeting of the world financial markets. This place is right around the corner from the office. Definitely alright, particularly given the price. No, it's not gourmet, but it's fast, filling, and cheap, so I am not going to complain. The waiters even pressured some people to get the hell out to free up tables while we were waiting. Which is just awesome.
