Tokyo Garden, I'm confused... what are you a fusion of? It seems like a sports bar that serves sushi, and all of their rolls are the same thing, just switching the same 4/5 ingredients. A good amount of their rolls use rice paper... which, is this a thing now? Why not use seaweed? A good amount have some combination of shrimp tempura, tuna, salmon, topped with jalapenos... because, that's also a thing... There's also shu mai on the menu... which is random. It's nice to see free miso soup as a Yelp offer, but you should skip it - the miso soup is very bland. After taking forever to pick something, as nothing was appealing, the roll I got had shrimp tempura, topped with spicy tuna. The spicy tuna was brown? So it looked like someone excreted on my tuna before serving. Luckily I didn't get sick. For anyone who is critical (or at least somewhat) about their sushi, don't come here. This is our new go to place for sushi. The service was great, our server was Katie and she was helpful and polite. It's a small place but the food is fresh and delicious. We ordered six rolls and they were pretty quick at getting our food out. I don't usually have dessert, but I'm glad I tried the macrons. Most places that serve macrons with ice cream freeze them at such a low temperature that they are hard and inedible. These were kept at a temp that kept the ice cream frozen while still maintaining a soft macron. Would definitely recommend! read more

Their Toyota roll was a winner and so was the MGI roll. But check it out for yourself, they have a gazilion rolls with funky names like 'Jessica Albacore'. ...ha....ha This is a place puts emphasis on their fusion sushi rolls, not a place for fresh sushi. Other than the crazy combos, I'd say that their prices are a little high for "club sushi". The service wasn't fantastic but not too shabby either. They have an unofficial yelp deal with your check in -- a free appetizer under $6.95 and we were unable to order a higher value appetizer and pay the different :( We went for a spicy garlic edamame, not bad, but not spicy at all. I used to go to Tokyo Garden back in the day, waaay before they remodeled it. They definitely fixed it up to look nicer. Food was good then but now its only okay. I went in a couple weeks ago during my lunch hour and ordered the salmon plate To Go, and not only did it cost $13.00, but the girl told me it was going to take 25 minutes! Would've been nice to know that ahead of time. I was a bit upset but was craving salmon, so whatever. When I got it, it looked and tasted horrible. One would think if they're putting that much time and money into a dish, they'd at least make it look.pretty and tasty! I should've went to San Sai. So, my daughter wanted sushi for dinner and since we were already in the area, I thought It'd give it another shot. The service was better, but I think the bus guy was more attentive to us more than our waitress. The cool think was that we made it in time for Happy Day, their version of Happy Hour. The deal was buy one beer, get the other for 25-cents. I ordered the Albacore Salad- just as I read it on the menu, but when I got it, it was SPICY albacore salad. I like spicy but this was hot. I couldn't enjoy my salad. It was obvious our waitress forgot our calamari order because we didn't get it till we were almost done. But I don't recommend ordering it...it was overcooked and dry. Heard so much about this place that I had to check it out. BIG MISTAKE. It was 3pm on a weekday & the place was less than half empty. Yet, it took them over 40mins to bring out our order! So this is the only sushi spot I've really been to around here but I like it. I usually get the popcorn shrimp roll except this last time I went to get some to go the shrimp was just a bunch of little balls very hard to grab with the chop sticks. Needed a spoon to eat it with. Sushi is not the best but I get my fix during my lunch break. I'm quickly seated and served on my short lunch break. I'm a regular here because of the location and quick service. Haven't been here in a while. Wanted to eat something light. Was seated immediately and knew what I wanted right away. Handed my order to chef, came out in less than five minutes. I ordered salmon, fresh water eel, and fatty tuna. They exceeded my expectations. Still not the best but wow, that was super good. I want more. There have been two occasions now where I ordered with the chef and some items never came out. Given that I have limited time on my lunch I had to leave and had to wait for them to remove the items from my check. Whenever I'm craving sushi, Tokyo Garden is my got place! I absolutely love getting the MGI roll, and the super crunch roll :) I've tried the spicy tuna as well but i wasn't a fan. I also recommend the salmon roll. The ambiance here is very chill. Its a nice, casual and clean sushi place. I would recommend coming here for a lunch or even dinner date. After recently having to move to Downey from the OC, we were looking for some good sushi. After our first visit, we thought that maybe we found it. But after our second visit, it confirmed. This place... Not so much. Presentation is nice, depending on who makes it. Authenticity refers to everything from WHO makes it, to how it's presented. The woman next to us ordered something that looked amazing and asked her what it was. It came highly recommended, so we took her advice. When we received it, we were shocked to see that it was MUCH smaller than our neighbors! Portions varied for overly priced sushi... not cool. After realizing that Tokyo Garden is part of the group of restaurants owned by the same folks as Chomps in Fullerton, it explained a lot. But if you are going to be associated with the likes of Chomps and Riptides in Mission Viejo, don't lower your standards because you are in Downey. read more

Horrible, horrible service. My daughter and I got there at 2:30, place is pretty empty, only three tables are full. Waiter comes, takes our order. I asked if they have any plates with real crab meat. He said for $3 more they could do a California Roll with real crab meat. So I order that, a bowl of miso soup and salmon sashimi. They bring the miso soup and the sashimi. The waiter (another one by the way) said they can't make CA Roll with real crab meat. I ask what do they have with real crab meat. After what seemed like an eternity it turns out that they ran out of crab, which he didn't explain correctly. So I order just a CA Roll, asked for wasabi for my sashimi and an extra set of chop sticks. The CA roll took forever to come. When he finally brought the CA Roll, I asked for wasabi and chopsticks again. The wasabi and the chopsticks never made it. He never came back to ask if we needed more water, napkins or anything else. Mind you, I shouldn't even have to ask for wasabi, that is a given in a sushi place. When he finally came was to remove the empty plate and asked if I needed anything else. I said just bring me the check and remove my untouched sashimi from my check. You never brought me the wasabi or the chopsticks for me to eat it. He didn't say anything, just grabbed my plate and loudly threw it in the bin where they throw the dirty plates. Another waiter, who I assume was the manager, came and said "I heard the waiter never brought you the wasabi, sorry about that". He offered new sashimi or dessert but I just wanted to get out of there. Not going back again. read more

With a name like Tokyo Garden, my expectations are usually set pretty low, but the fish tasted fresh (phew). The menu is not really geared toward sushi purists and is very Americanized--most rolls are decadent (deep fried and slathered in sauces). So if you're someone who actually likes to taste their fish, the menu may seem a bit limited. Another thing I noticed about the menu: Can we say over-priced? How are things like miso soup (over $2) and agadashi tofu (over $6) so expensive? Totally unjustified. Another gripe: Service was fine until we needed the check. Although the floor was swarming with idle servers, none made any eye contact or noticed our table had stopped picking at our plates. It took well over 10 minutes to finally get the check. Basically, I'd give this place 4 stars if the prices went down a few bucks. Sorry, but there are other fish in the sea and I mama ain't no fool...so 3 it is. Sidenote: This place is filled with flat screens (mostly on sports channels)--so if your man needs to watch his game and you need to get your eat on, check this place out. read more

And the crunch spicy tuna roll we ordered was not exactly what we wanted and I couldn't stomach eating it. It was a spicy mush that was most definitely missing the spicy tuna. Then there's a yelp discount that if you check in you get an appetizer free (value of $4.99). What they didn't say is that there are only 4 appetizers that qualify and those are on a separate menu. Why have the yelp offer advertised everywhere, but not mention that it's only select items on a different menu? Meh. Point is: the food was terrible, the service was slow, and the yelp offer misleading. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. There are better Japanese restaurants in Downey. read more

Went to this place with some family, we went on Friday night and it was packed ,we were told are wait time was about 20 min and it was more, it was about a 40 min wait. Other than that the food was delicious I had a teriyaki chicken plate,it was nice and tender the taste was delicious tempura was good as well. The pros: The food is good, not great! The restaurant is clean and they make your food pretty fast. The cons: The parking is kinda tight and awkward so don't go when it's busy. Also **Don't show up after 10 pm. The waiters and staff will rush you out of the restaurant and if you don't leave, they will turn on the vacuum, bust out the windex and start cleaning the tables around you so that you eventually get so annoyed you have no choice but to leave. Most of the servers are friendly and will greet you politely, but a couple of them have some sort or attitude like their parents beat them with a wet noodle over their forehead early on as a child. Came here for dinner with my spouse. Very nice looking place inside. We were seated and ordered our food. I ordered the Geisha roll. It was good if you like spicy food like me. My spouse got the B.B.Q beef ribs. My food came out in around 6 minutes which is good. But my spouse dish didn't come out for another 25 minutes. I had to wait looking at my dish for my spouse plate to come. We also had to wait for 30 minutes to get refills. I see if the place is very crowded but it wasn't and I could see all the waiters standing at the front talking and hanging out. I think I would come back, hopefully have better experience.
