Stopped for lunch and had a great experience and meal. Definitely recommend and going back. It was my first time here and I had a great lunch. Ordered the bento box and a monster roll to share - it was a lot of food! The service was good. servers were attentive and friendly.

Came here again, this time with some friends! The wait was super long, so I definitely recommend joining the waitlist before you arrive. It was basically packed the entire night. Since the place is pretty small, it can take a while to be seated, especially if you're coming with a larger group. The parking lot is also pretty small, so if you can't find a spot there, you can usually find street parking nearby. I'd say the prices were about the same as the last time I came, although the portions felt a little smaller this time. I ordered the beef teriyaki and the Osaka sashimi. I noticed the beef teriyaki was a bit different compared to my last visit. This time, there was less beef, and it came with three gyoza instead. I personally didn't love that swap, but it wasn't a huge deal. I also unfortunately got a few pieces of hard rice, though my friend didn't seem to have that issue, so maybe I just had some unlucky bites. Aside from that, everything still tasted great. My friends were actually surprised by how good the salad was--they were like, "Wow, this is actually really good!

I hadn't been to Tokyo Garden in yearsssss and I was pleasantly surprised to realize that they are consistently one of the best sushi spots in Downey. The sashimi platter was gorgeous and everything tasted so fresh. Out of all the sashimi we had, the tuna was my least favorite, surprisingly. Everything else was melt in your mouth. We got a sashimi platter and it came with miso soup, salad and rice which were all great. The roll we got I don't remember the name but it was sooo scrumptious! It had sliced jalapeño and cilantro on top of the freshest white fish. Will def continue to come here and recommend to others. We did lunch and it was empty and quiet which was nice. It's such a cute little spot. Check it out if you're in the area.

This was my second time at Tokyo Garden and today visit was just as good as the first time if not better!! This time around we reordered the Crispy Shrimp Roll and the Sashimi Roll which were both outstanding. On top we ordered the Picante Roll which was our favorite roll today. Great sushi, current favorite is the tornado roll. It has spicy tuna, crabmeat, avocado on the inside & crispy (very crunchy) shredded potato with soy paper. I love the crunchy, potato, and spicy tuna combo taste. The service is good, not too friendly but they are very attentive and they always keep it clean. They tend to always be busy, the waiting is a bit long but it's worth it.

We stopped by Tokyo Garden in Downey with my wife and kids for dinner. The food was excellent, fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented; but the service left a lot to be desired. It's one of those nights where great food met careless attention, which makes the experience a bit bittersweet. The Food The Tokyo Garden Sushi Deluxe box came out looking like a piece of art. The fish tasted fresh, and the rice had that perfect balance of flavor and texture. The rolls we ordered for the table were also well-prepared and balanced, not overloaded or falling apart like you sometimes find elsewhere. Ambiance The space has a cozy, authentic feel that makes it easy to settle in. The warm wood accents and low lighting give it a sense of calm, it's a great spot to enjoy sushi with family or on a quiet night out. Service This was the one weak spot of the night. Our server seemed distracted and unsure when answering a few menu questions. Shortly after we were seated, my 2-year-old spilled her water, which he witnessed. Aside from saying "it's okay," he didn't offer any help or bring something to clean it up. We ended up flagging down another staff member to handle it after waiting a while. When the meals came out, everyone at my table received their food except me. I assumed the sushi box might be taking longer, but it turned out it had likely been sitting out due to our server disappearing mid-service. Another server finally brought it over, but by that time, everyone else had already finished eating. We later learned our original server may have gone on break, yet no one informed us or took over the table. To finish things off, the restaurant automatically added the gratuity. I'm someone who always tips well, but this time it felt undeserved and took away the incentive for good service. End Notes I'll still return for the food and in hopes that the service just had an off night, that and I would love to give it another shot because I love it when a local business gets its 5 stars. But I hope management takes a closer look at their service approach. A bit more attentiveness would easily turn this place into a top-tier sushi spot in Downey.

Sushi restaurant in Downey that offers some of the most flavorful and fresh rolls in the area. They have a nice variety of rolls to choose from, along with sashimi, salads, poke bowls, and bento boxes. My favorite item is the geisha roll. It's packed with flavor and has a great kick to it. It's a spicy tuna roll with shrimp tempura and fresh red onions, jalapeños, and spicy geisha sauce on top. Service is average, nothing special. Parking can be a nightmare with their tiny parking lot in the front and bigger but also busy parking lot in the back. I opt for street parking when I visit. My one compliant is during my most recent visit. After finishing our meal, my best friend and I were chatting and finishing our drinks when a waitress came over and asked us to wrap things up so that they could use the table to seat another party of 8. This felt rude as t was a sign on the table mentioning a 2 hour limit, and we had been at the table for a little over an hour. Side note: Upon being seated, we noticed an open 2 person table that we should have been seated at (rather than the 4 person table) if service staff was worried about tables. Pro tip: Review your check before paying and you'll see they apply an automatic 15% tip (even for parties as small as 2). I've accidentally double tipped twice at this restaurant because the waitress brings a tablet to check you out which prompts you for another tip, without saying a word about the bill already including a 15% tip.

Have been to this location twice and can say that the sushi is delicious. The mango salmon roll is absolutely delicious and only lacks some spiciness. The zen roll is refreshing with tuna, yellowtail, and salmon. While I usually don't enjoy spicy tuna, the Toyota roll is insanely delish! They also offer highballs that are as good as the ones I enjoyed whilst in Japan. Decor is similar to that golden gai/Tokyo mini streets. Service.. is unfortunately a hit or a miss as staff can be a little off putting or may forget about you.. but regardless the food and drink is worth it. Definitely a 4.5 overall.

Love Tokyo Garden, been a fan since 2018. Wonderful experience everytime I go, hospitable waiters and waitresses who check up on whenever I'm there. The manager of this location is very kind, although I do miss the one who transferred to their sister location. The Ambiance is a nice homey feel with low lighting and nice pictures in the wall. The overall aesthetic and atmosphere set is great and very comforting. The food, always a 10. Wonderful rolls and salad. The poke bowls are beautiful and so tasty! Although the price has raised quite a bit throughout the years, I always leave satisfied!

I have been going here for about 10yrs now, it has had its ups and downs, but overall good food, I would have gave it 5stars but the service really sucks sometimes. You can expect to spend about $20-30 depending on what you like. Most of my favorite rolls are $13.95. Which are: Toyota Roll Baked Spicy Lobster Roll Hawaiian Roll MGI Roll (10.95) OMG Roll (14.95) The fish is fresh and delicious! read more

I went to dinner with co-workers staying in Norwalk. The restaurant was full on Tuesday but the service was great. We ordered a mountain of sushi and there wasn't a disappointing choice. They have lots of rolls - more than the basics. My friends drank beer but I think there's wine and liquor. It was kind of loud and they played weird electronic music. I'll certainly go again if I'm in the area. read more

Every Friday night we go out for sushi with the same party of five. Today we were very disappointed because they turned us away. Their first explanation was that they couldn't sit party of 5 tonight. When we asked again they explained that they were closing in 30min therefore they couldn't sit us. We were very confused because we have arrived at the same time every night with the same party and have never been turned away. Also they had just seated a party of 2 right before us. If they make selection based off time and number in the party than they need to state this on Yelp so customers are aware. Their explanation was poorly communicated. They gave us two different explanations two different times. It's very questionable if we will be back again. read more

I'm updating this because I think that I didn't give enough credit to their california-type sushi rolls with cooked stuff...it is good, it's just not really sushi. Still, their "creations" taste good. In moderation, they are also not sickening. I especially like the Crazy Roll because of the shredded lobster stuff on top, and I also like the crunch roll--but in moderation. So there, I don't hate it. I just won't go here if I am craving sushi. I also don't like that their rolls are just sloppily made...like it's not even rolled, the rice is just falling apart already. I also like the roll called Spidersomething, and the calamari is good too--skip the sauce read more

Food is Good. Not a place i'd rave about. But would return if friends wanted to meet there. their rolls are probably their forte... I forgot what I had but it included avocado, shrimp tempura and some flakes. It was good. Their korean style ribs were amazing. Totally full of zing. Ordered some fatty salmon, Ono and tuna sashimi... that's where you I saw they were vulnerable. I can taste water in the ono. As if it had been frozen or kept in an open container in a refrigerator. The rice was bland. decent texture but lacked pizazz (see my other sushi reviews). I wasn't to impressed with their cuts. The portions were generous and for the price I was happy. But if you're a sushi snob or a sushi purist this isn't the place for you. read more

Kinda dissapointed, which is the reason for the 3 stars... It's Thursday, around 4pm and only 3 other tables were being taken care of. I asked for an order of spicy garlic edamame together with everyone's order. All of the food starts coming out, and the edamame never did. Remember, only 3 other tables had patrons. Otherwise empty... When we were almost done with our food, I asked one of the servers if it's almost out if not to let me know and cancel. He didn't come back with a reply until my husband flagged him to ask what the response was. He said he had canceled it. Ok, thanks for letting us know beforehand. Also, had to flag down the servers too much for everything. If it were busier, I'd understand, but it wasn't. Not sure if we'll be back. The dinner special was good and my husband liked the salmon roll. He said he wasn't too crazy about the crazy roll. So we'll see if we're willing to give it a second try... For now, it was meh. read more

Been here a few times for business lunches and it's... not bad. The service is good, fish is good but not great, and they recently remodeled so it feels like a nicer place than before. What's nice for them is they do a brisk lunch business. I've never had to wait, but it seems 80% full when I'm in there. Pricing is about right for the quality of food. I've tried the bento boxes and they're not bad, a decent amount of food for the money. The chirashi sushi bowl is pretty good, but as long as the fish is fresh you can't really screw that up. The only thing I can nit pick on is the teriyaki chicken was tough one time I had it. Bottom line is it's not the first place I'd choose to eat, but it will do in a pinch. read more

We had really bad memory in this restaurant. Service: The worse service I ever had. Waiters did not care what customers need, keep passing by you. You will be lucky to get hold of service people, because they don't care. Food: We ordered Shrimp Shumai, it finally arrived after entrees. I ordered tereyaki Chicken, they are burned. Sushi and rolls had no ginger and washabi... Like I said, the waiters did not bother to check if we need anything else. If you are looking for a supermarket type of Japanese restaurant, this is one. It's chaos, loud noise, very unorganized. read more

Tried this place for the first time yesterday and was greatly disappointed. Service took forever, we had to wait long for the waitress to take our order, another 15 min for them to bring the food, then we still had to wait after we finished eating to get the bill. We ordered the lunch combination, spicy chicken, sesame chicken, California roll and salmon roll it did taste okay but it was also served with some green mush. That was not good. I would not come here again. Service was not great. On a Saturday around 12 noon. I can only imagine il how it is on nights.. read more

When I'm craving some good sushi I always head over to my local spot!!! Some of my favorite rolls/orders are: 1. HAWAIIAN ROLL- hands down my favorite! (Spicy Tuna... Need I say more?) 2. Godzilla Roll- wild mushroom sauce to die for!!! 3. Popcorn Shrimp Roll: Makes my mouth tremble just thinking about it! 4. Their SALADS: never disappointed! While there are many many many rolls that are great and amazing these are typically on my order list most often... FRIENDLY STAFF that will most definitely partake in your festivities! Best place for a birthday celebration! It's been my spot for Sushi since my friend introduced it to me about 12 years ago!!!! -1 star for: SLOW to bring out your food! Came In On A Sunday Evening And Was Seated Right Away. It Is A Bit Noisy, But It Did Not Bother Me. The Service Was Good. I Ordered The Energy Roll And Crunch California Roll It Was Good. There Is Not A Lot Of Parking In The Parking Lot Itself, But You Can Find Parking In The Street No Problem. I Would Come Here Again To Try More Things From There Menu. This spot is "alright" not all that like some people seem to say. When we got there we had to move to 2 different tables, because they sat us down where the AC was hitting us in the face with cold air. Price wise it was a lil bit more than I expected it to be for some w/e sushi. I think I'll stick to downtown L.A sushi Tennos' cheaper and taste better. Although I did like the "sergio special" lol weird name! Prob wouldn't go back to this place un less im in desperate need for california rolls. read more

The Pros first mighty tasty food and great staff. You also won't have a hard time finding parking. The Cons... Noisy as all hell between the horrid club music and the tables are so close to each other. I felt like we were in a sports bar rather than a eating establishment, why do we need tv's on almost every wall. Not the experience I was hoping for ambiance wise.. In the future I will only order take away and not dine in. read more

I have been coming here for at least 10 years since I moved to Downey & am really surprised with the negative reviews below. Been to many sushi places in my life & I must say that this place rocks!!! FROM CUSTOMER SERVICE TO FRIENDLY & WARM ATMOSPHERE TO THE COZY AMBIENCE THAT people love here... That is the beauty of TOKYO GARDEN!!! I really don't need to say anything else except If you wanna know how this place rolls, just come by on a Friday nite or a Saturday nite... You will most probably wait for a table for at least a half hour because it is paaaacked!!! Sooooooo, YES WE LUV THIS PLACE & I am glad that there is actually an authentic sushi Bar here in our local Downey town. Oh,,& they do not charge for extra "eel sauce" or whatever sauce like other trying hard sushi places. They would actually just give you a whole jar of it when you ask. :0) &! If I need my check right away, I don't wait around, I just come up to the cashier area, & they're happy to give you your bill, That's if you can't wait for your busy server. THIS SUSHI BAR IS AN ICON TO DOWNEY. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. read more

Ate there yesterday for lunch. Ordered the beef teriyaki and tempura. The beef teriyaki was good. However, there was only four pieces of tempura. I've been to other Japanese restaurants for lunch and they give you ample serving of tempura. In short, will never go to this establishment again. My rating for this place is. . . . I went in for dinner and my cup was full of lipstick stains. No I was not wearing any lipstick at all. I brought it up to the sever and got a free drink. A free drink? I lost my appetite! Greedy restaurant. They do not honor their coupons they provide on their website, they whole heartedly lied and told us over the phone if we went in person and mention it they will discount our meal. When we arrived we were told they could not do what they said they'd do... we ate there anyway and received horrible service. Never once did they check on us or refilled our drinks. Would not recommend to anyone. read more

Just found this place, great sushi, good service and and good atmosphere. Reasonably pricedAnd provides a quality product. I don't often write reviews (as you can see from my profile), but as I'm still digesting the most wonderful meal I've eaten in years I feel compelled to do so. The restaurant itself is pretty small, maybe 15 tables or so plus bar seating. Despite this they have a large number of servers on the floor that ensure that everything with your meal is perfect and prompt. Every staff member I dealt with was extremely courteous, knowledgeable of the menu, happy, and professional. The sashimi was extremely fresh and was extremely well marinated. It was expertly cut to the perfect thickness and size to ensure that it wasn't too chewy, but was also substantial enough to ensure a proper bite. The rice was properly sticky and had the perfect touch of vinegar that you hope to taste when you take the first bite. I believe a true mark of excellence at a sushi restaurant is their rice, and this place delivers on that front with FLYING colors. One of my choices here was the Amaebi (sweet shrimp) which came with an order of two shrimp heads. EASILY the most delicious thing I've eaten in ages. The insane looks I got from those around me as I happily crunched into them was an added bonus as well. I don't think the server could believe I was going to eat them either judging from the look on his face, but I was more than happy to surprise. :) The Final Fantasy Roll was an easy choice as I am a huge fan of the video game series. That wasn't only reason I ordered it, the spicy crab and gobo crunch was just too hard to resist. The Crazy Roll came highly recommended and was just as good as it was hyped up to be, which is impressive as I was told "it would change my life". I wouldn't quite say my life is "changed", but it is unarguably better for having had it. The Lady In Red Roll was easily the best of the night for me. It came with fried onions as a topper, an almost ridiculous amount, but they were delicious and came as a welcome textual note in a very soft roll without any vegetables to do so inside. For 3 of us with a pitcher of Sapporo, 2 appetizers, 4 orders of sashimi, 3 specialty rolls, a teriyaki dinner (for the one there who didn't like sushi) = $119. Not bad at all. I still can't wipe the stupid smile off my face that this restaurant has put there. I will be back again and again and again. The fact that my in-laws live across the street makes it that much sweeter. $2 sake bombs on Wednesdays, I think so. Every Wednesday, from now until I'm too feeble to get there. Tokyo Gardens has always been one of our favorite places for sushi--we've been coming here for over 10 years, and it used to be a spot we could rely on for both great food and a welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was the worst experience we've ever had here. The biggest issue was the service, specifically with the manager, Helen. She came across as rude, unfriendly, and completely dismissive of what I was asking. Instead of trying to help or even acknowledge our concerns, she made us feel like we were an inconvenience. That kind of attitude is really disappointing, especially from someone in a management role. On top of that, the restaurant itself felt chaotic and poorly maintained. It looked like they may have lost a lot of staff--things were disorganized, service was slow, and there was a noticeable lack of attention to customers. We weren't the only ones frustrated; you could hear other diners around us complaining as well. It's honestly upsetting to see a place we've loved for so long decline like this. The only reason we even consider coming back is because of Marlon, who continues to provide great service and is one of the few bright spots left here. If this is the direction the restaurant is heading--especially with how customers are treated by management--we won't be returning. We truly hope things improve, but this experience was enough to make us seriously reconsider coming back. read more

We arrived at 9pm on the dot, a little late, but according to their listing they are open until 9:45pm. We are seated quickly, ordered food and waited. I received my appetizer and meal and waited for my girlfriend to get her order. This wait turned into literally 35-40mins. We actually got the check and we're told they would be closing the register so I asked the waitress if they had forgotten about her item. We are asked if "we still want it" and obviously did I mean, why wouldn't we? They did. Infact, their explanation was "the item was burned and they forgot but we are making another one now". The item eventually comes, at this point 45mins later. They give me the check again, and offer a measly $4 discount on an order of $47! That's not even 10%, doesn't even cover taxes! Funny enough, the couple in the seat behind us actually got complimentary sake for their wait, I was expecting them to atleast offer this as a condolence, but not even that. Horrible first time experience here, I honestly would not recommend anyone spend their hard earned money here because it seems as thought everyone who works here gives little to no thought at all. Another little cherry on top of this experience, was that the cooks objectified my girlfriend as she walked to the restroom. This guy literally checked her out and told his buddy to look in that direction. Really disgusting disposable behavior. read more

I'm so disappointed, I'm giving them 2 stars because I come here a lot & most of the time I can't complain, but last night was different! went with my daughter & her dad around 6:30pm. We had to be at dance practice by 8pm. (Which is a block away) we figured we stop and get a few sushi rolls. It took 15-20 min to get sat. Which is no big deal it's always packed, but once we got sat our server got our drinks & left us there for another 25 min. He was too busy taking payments from other guest and having people write down their names to wait for a table. I work for a restaurant and I understand it gets busy but to stop and take a min to just get or order down wouldn't have took long. No other server acknowledged us at all. I called one over before my daughters dad was about to walk our. Only because I was craving sushi so bad. He took our order. 2 rolls and the kids plate & it took another 20 min to come out. Soda was flat, but the rolls were good. Considering I only had time to eat two pieces. So disappointed that I don't think I will go back. I recently tried Tokyo Garden Sushi, and it was a great experience! We ordered the Hawaiian, Love, and Picante rolls, and all three were delicious. Each roll had fresh ingredients, well-balanced flavors, and a beautiful presentation. Tokyo Garden is one of my favorite spots for Japanese food. The restaurant is clean, the atmosphere is comfortable, and the staff are always friendly and welcoming. This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in downey. The waitresses are really nice and helpful. The food is delicious. I would recommend the Samurai Roll. I never liked eel till I tried this one. Yes some of the rolls can kinda taste the same. But hey, you gotta get creative and order a variety of different rolls. Not the same kind of rolls only different toppings. On weekends this place can get pretty busy but the wait isn't very long. Take-out is also a good idea, because it's usually ready within 20 minutes. Oh yeah you have to try their Red Bean Tempura Ice Cream. The best. read more

I've been coming to Tokyo Garden for a while now, and it's honestly one of my go-to spots. Every time I come, the quality is consistent and the fish is always fresh. The staff recognizes regulars and makes you feel welcome, which I really appreciate. Even when it's busy, they still check on you and do their best to take care of everything. I usually order a mix of sashimi and specialty rolls, and I've never been disappointed. You can tell they really care about the food here. I've been going to this place for 10 years, celebrating Birthdays or and just going out to a hip relaxing place for lunch worth my friends. Staff is accommodating and they have big colorful fun Cake hats for birthdays that you offer for birthday boy or girl and sing to you. Food is tasty with a variety of fresh sushi, roles and baked seafood. However, I was disappointed when they ran out of oysters but they must be good if they ran out on a Wednesday. I always order they're delicious fresh green tea. Anyways I recommend this place to all my friends and family. read more

You must TRY this Place!!! this is the best sushi place in town!! They have fast service and the quality of food is VERY GOOD. I get their monster roll and crazy roll all the time and the Bento box is a good way to go when you go there for lunch!! The chicken is so tender and well cooked and the teriyaki sauce is just delish!!! When i dont feel like eating carbs, i order blue diamond roll or hawaiian roll bc they come with fresh fishes inside with no rice and cucumber wrap. they are just so refreshing, tangy and awesome!!! Just went there over last weekend for dinner with my friends for the first time and i fell in love with it. This place is so packed and busy, cant believe i never knew about this place until now. My friends brought me there bc it was my birthday and the servers even celebrated with us by playing a birthday song and danced around our tables wearing a funny looking hats. It was so funny and entertaining that made my birthday dinner more memorable for me!! The food was excellent and service was GREAT!! this will be my favorite sushi place now!!! read more

I ordered the Katsu Plate and the Mexican Roll, and both exceeded my expectations. The Katsu Plate was crispy, golden, and flavorful. The meat was tender, and the katsu sauce added just the right tangy-sweet kick. It came with rice and a fresh side salad, making it a hearty and satisfying dish. Years after, Tokyo Garden is a never ending experience. They have remodeled the place to almost accurately resemble being in a Japanese market or on an outside festival but preserving the traditional vibes. Food has changed for the better with more options for you to choose from. If youre looking for both an authentic with fusion touch place to eat, chill, celebrate, have a meeting or relax this is the place. Great staff, fantastic owners. It was great food. Amazing sushi!! And everything was just good, the service was good, the food was more than good it was amazing, and everyone in the restaurant seemed to enjoyed everything as well. I've been coming to Tokyo Garden for more than 19 years. I love their food, everything in their menu is delicious. Their food quality has not change throughout the years and it's the best I've had. Have tried different sushi restaurants and none haven't beat Tokyo Garden. The staff is very friendly, and some have been there for more than 19 years. Before COVID came to change everything, we would have sake bombs with staff and it was so much fun! read more
