We had an amazing experience here. It took us about 3 weeks to get 5pm reservations on a Sunday, primarily because this place is small, maybe holds about 20-25 people total. However, it was really nice to have an intimate experience where it does not feel overcrowded. We tried four different cocktails, they were all unique and delicious but Drunken Tiger was my personal favorite. We also had a few of the small bites including the Cali roll, edamame, calamari and steak. The food was very tasty, but options are definitely intended to be small bites not full meals. The presentation of everything was so nice, and the servers were attentive. Cocktails were great as usual (we have been following this bartender around since Puzzle Bar). We got the First Love (kakigori) and the Monochrome. Service was good as well, very fast and informative. We did not try the food this time around. Reservations were a bit harder, we needed to sign up to receive notifications on open table but it wasn't a huge deal. We ended up getting a table within a few days. *3.5 stars* A friend of mine posted about her experience at Tokyo Noir and upon reading up on it, the concept intrigued me - izakaya-inspired speakeasy hidden behind El Barrio Cantina? Tell me more. Tokyo Noir only allows you to book reservations 7 days out, so on a whim, I happened to check their Open Table and was able to snag a Wednesday reservation for the following week. What I didn't expect was how hard it would be for me to find parking around the space on a Wednesday night. They do have a dedicated parking lot across the street but there are limited spaces and by the time I arrived, they were all full. (also, note that it is a one way lot so you typically have to exit out a side alley behind the apartment buildings. The street parking is tight all around the restaurant and luck just wasn't on my side so I ended up parking several blocks away in a neighborhood and walked over. Look for the singular lantern down an alleyway and press the buzzer - someone will greet you at the door and check if you have a reservation and then let you in. My friends arrived before me, so they were seated at a table for 4 right near the entrance. Sitting at a highboy or at the bar would be preferred if you plan on eating (which we did) because the low coffee table-height bar made it hard to enjoy the handheld foods we tried like the fries, bao buns, street corn, Okinami corn dogs, and wagyu skirt (Most seating is really meant for 2 people unless you're able to take the entire bar space - like most speakeasies, this place isn't spacious. The food was good but felt more fusion that Japanese izakaya, yet I get what they were going for. I won't reveal too much else about the experience (although check any social media account & you're bound to find video of it all around if you want to be spoiled). For the drinks, I got a Hibiki Old Fashioned ($21) that came with the unique hand-carved ice ball, sliced and diced with precision by the bartenders. Then I asked for a dealer's choice and got a smoky Manhattan. The drinks are lovely but like any speakeasy, you only have a certain amount of time in the space - plan accordingly when ordering food and drinks. I like the idea that a light turns on when someone is outside waiting to be let in, but the flashing light did get a bit distracting at times and would kind of take away the vibe of the space. Overall, the experience was good and we had fun, but I do think there is some room for improvement - our server seemed distracted and overwhelmed and wasn't as attentive as I think we needed for the limited-time experience, and at the end of the night, she ended up running someone else's bill on our cards - it happens and she corrected it so it was all good in the end, and I understand the need to turn the tables when we've overstayed our welcome but it felt a bit rushed at the end. Don't come here if you are hungry! Went on a date here and while yes I do agree the ambiance and drinks were amazing, where it fell short was food and service. We sat down ordered drinks, apps, and then Hand Rolls (6 in total.) Although it took some time for drinks, I considered them a craft/specialty so understood the wait. The apps came out, following drinks but the hand rolls took over an hour. We had to even ask the waiter as we were wondering if maybe just an error. We were finally ready to cancel the order when they finally all appeared and at once. For wanting to encompass this Japanese bar aesthetic it's literally hand roll etiquette number one to NEVER let the rolls sit for long. We waited over an hour for six soggy hand rolls, which by then we were starving so just inhaled them, paid the bill, and left to another sushi joint to satisfy what was left to be fulfilled. First time going to a speakeasy and it was definitely an experience. First off, parking is terrible in this neighborhood. Try to come early to find parking on the streets. I was slightly late to my reservations, but they still honored them. So, I was greatful! Tokyo Noir is located in the alley. You know you have arrived by the latern hanging above the door. You push the button and wait to be welcomed in. The interesting part is once you are in and sitting down, anyone else that pushes the button the lights will come on inside. I got to sit at the high table which isn't bad, however, try to get bar sits because you will be where all the action is at. The bartenders are amazing! Just watching them shape ice was cool. The servers recommended wagyu skirt and edamame as food options. My friend loved the edamame. It was a little spicy though. It had a few chili peppers in it. The wagyu skirt had a nice sauce. We also had the okonomi corn dogs, oysters on a half shell, and wasabi fries. The corn dogs were just alright and you only get 3 oysters. However, the wasabi fries were amazing! I wanted more of those. If you have a later reservation after 11:30pm, you wil probablyl not be able to order food. Kitchen orders close at 11:30-11:45pm. For drinks, we got the astro boy, kaiju, highball, and the drunken tiger. I loved the astro boy. It was sweet and delicious! My friend loved the drunken tiger. The taste of cucumber was refreshing. My husband and I loved our time here. The drinks were all fantastic, so delicious and interesting and unique. My favorite was Juice Theory - a little sweet, refreshing, complex, plus a cool subtle savory note from the tomato. The Drunken Tiger was also good; the garnish on top is a Korean style cucumber (think soy and sesame) and the aroma really added a fun layer to the drink. The Okinawa Gimlet was also delicious and refreshing. The Truffle Fashioned was well done; the truffle was subtle and actually went with the drink much better than I imagined it would. It was just on the drier side and I prefer my drinks to have a touch more sweetness. The bartenders were so kind, patient, and eager to describe the drinks and help me decide. I also enjoyed watching them hand-carve ice out of blocks that were imported from Japan (apparently the ice is softer and easier to carve compared to what would be easily obtained here). The people who own and operate this place clearly care about the craft of making great drinks. Food is pretty good too -- we enjoyed the flavors of the skirt steak and found the deviled eggs to be excellent. Spicy edamame also great. Definitely looking forward to coming back!! read more

The idea is cool, the inside is artsy and unique, but I believe this was incredibly overhyped for a place that hard to get into. We had some drinks which were all decent, but the experience was soured by the terrible service. Several times we had to go up to the bar and ask for things because our server ignored us and didn't bring us things we either ordered or asked for (in such a small space that was not packed). I don't feel a need to return due to the lack of friendly service and the menu items didn't blow me away. We enjoyed the Astro Boy and the First Love drinks. It took a long time to order food, and we were able to get the deviled eggs and squid which were just ok. I wouldn't stress out about getting reservations here, but if you want to try something delicious, I suggest the First Love shaved ice cocktail. read more

In a short alleyway is a raised door where you press a button to get in. We had reservations for the tables but had asked for the counter (love me a good counter spot!) After we were seated, we perused through the menu and ordered almost one of everything! My favorite being the guava-shaved ice and the Kaiju. We had also picked some food out and there were these teriyaki steak strips that were tasty! I'd go back on a less busy day to just hang out, unfortunately we didn't see much at the counter but the bartenders chatting and sharpening knives but they were friendly nonetheless. The server was also very kind and a total sweetheart. Ambiance was cool too. Dimly lit and a bit noisy but my voice just doesn't carry very well to be fair. Some aspects reminded me of the old version of KTown's speakeasy behind the Normandie Club, Walker Inn (which is no longer there but was super cute) except with less of the 20's gilded vibe and more all-black. I really enjoyed Tokyo Noir! I was a bit skeptical on coming here because I had seen several videos on it so wondered if it was just another IG trap. The vibe in here was simple but good with dark interiors and tasteful Japanese decorations along with other LA native decorations with low hip hop playing in the background. Where this place really shines is the drinks! From the start to finish presentation from the bartender to overall taste and quality of the drinks, I wanted to continue ordering more just to see how they were going to be made! I'd suggest sitting at the bar so you can get the best presentation. I also tried the food there and sadly nothing really stood out from the three appetizers I got so I'd probably only come here for drinks next time. Honestly one of the BEST cocktail bars in the LA/OC area. The drinks are made to perfection. All the drinks were made in perfect balance of flavors and the different types of alcohol. Nothing was overbearing and the taste was just so refreshing. The ice game here is immaculate, though the drinks themselves aren't very well concocted nor give a last impression. My NUTORIOUS was extremely smoky forward and had no sense of craft to it. I was so looking forward to the Hojicha amaro to be more prevalent, but the palette just was overshadowed by the alcohol. I felt the dilution of the shake wasn't strong enough. The food was just okay to me. The grilled squid didn't have anything noteworthy about it. The sushi temaki were just average. Love this place. Barrio is a great place to wait before your res, shout out to Jeff who is awesome at the bar there. Then we head over in time for our res. Love the red lamp down the alley, iconic. The hidden alley entrance feels like something out of a movie almost like you would need a password to enter a hidden card games room. Arrived early at 10:50pm and was instructed to wait as our table wasn't available yet. We waited for about 20-25 minutes in the cold. Once seated, we ordered food and cocktails. The wasabi fries and grilled squid came out in about 15 minutes and were cold. After the food arrived, we waited for another 20 minutes for our cocktails. For the price point of the dishes ($9 each) and cocktails ($16 and $22), this blew the wallet but not our palettes. Worth a try just to know, but don't need to come by again. read more

Been trying to get in for a while and was lucky enough to book a 10:30pm (bar) spot on a Thursday night. A commitment we have prior ended early so I messaged the bar if they can accommodate us at an earlier time. Half an hour later I got a call from the host that a 9:45pm slot opened up and they will gladly take us - that was a plus. As a big fan of speakeasies, I was excited to check out this new bar in Long Beach. Although I don't make it out to Long Beach often, this spot definitely lived up to the hype.
