My wife surprised me this evening with a night out and planned a nightcap at Tokyo Noir. Wow was this a pleasant surprise. I thought we were heading to El Barrio Cantina, but she continued down the road and down an alley. Next thing I know we walked into this speakeasy feeling lounge. The server was spot on all evening. The food and drinks were phenomenal!! We tried a few different craft cocktails, each one top notch and I wrapped up with a pour of Japanese whiskey. My favorite drink was the Astro Boy with vodka and sweet potato shochu. We tried many of the available appetizers and everything was hitting. I could have passed on the corn dogs but everything else was fire. My favorites were the Wagyu, Squid, and Oysters. There was a cocktail that was made with a maybe a dashi and radish broth (?), it was terrible. The food was good, not best , but very good. My gripe is the vibes were off. Bartenders put out a vibe like "don't talk to me". We had to order drinks by telling the waitress who then in turn told the bartenders. Bartenders didn't greet us or talk to us. Small speakeasy in Long Beach that has become quite popular. You definitely need a reservation as we say parties being turned away at 10pm due to no more seats available. There was a slight wait even with our reservation, and they provided a free shot before of it. Shots were midori based, which is not my regular go to, but tasty. When you press the doorbell on the outside, a godzilla on the inside lights up to alert everyone someone is coming in - cute! Its a small bar and not too many seats so definitely get a reservation. Got in early at 5:15 and right when we walked in, felt like we were transported to a bar in Japan, but loved that it was very LA inspired (decor and music). This is my fourth time coming to Tokyo Noir and my husband and I have always been huge fans of Kevin Lee. We fell in love with his drinks at the Puzzle Bar, followed him to his bars in LA, and appreciate the complexities of his drinks and how he incorporates so many familiar tastes of Japan. With that being said, I do need to update my review for Tokyo Noir based upon my experience on 12/6/25. I made reservations for my annual girls night out. When we were seated, we were placed in the corner. Although I've always thought it looked cool from the bar, sitting on the little floor stools was very uncomfortable and really awkward. We asked if we could move and the waitress did her best to accommodate us and moved us to the couch in the other corner. It was still very difficult to drink our drinks with the table too low, but it was more comfortable. From here, it became a series of unfortunate events (I'm not going to list them all). We ordered a round of First Love (which I've had before). Our drinks were not sweet this time. They were just salty and bitter from the yuzu (and I love yuzu). We brushed it off and ordered another round. My friends ordered Kaiju and Yuzu Strawberry. The Yuzu Strawberry was undrinkable and tasted oddly too sweet and sour. I like a complex drink, but this was not it. My other friend was disappointed that the Kaiju was done in three sips, with about 80% of the glass full of ice. I ordered a Hibiki 12 year for $150 which was amazing. I'm just sad that the best drink was poured from a bottle and not a drink that the bartenders made. Lastly, we were moved a third time. This time, to make room for another party. So I carried my $150 drink awkwardly again and hopped on a backless high stool. Once there, we were simply abandoned. No one checked in on us, we tried to make eye contact with the waitresses and no one came back so we decided not to order a third round (we were not at the time-limit of our reservation). It was just uncomfortable once again to watch the bartender pouring what looked like free shots for everyone around the bar and we were just sitting waiting to be helped. I budgeted for $600 for this night and left very disappointed that I spent $360. I really wanted to show my friends how awesome this bar was and they asked if we could go elsewhere next time (I'm crushed!). I am writing this review in hopes things will improve, and that next time I come back, this place will be back at a 5 star. read more

Then they have LA based photography framed along another wall. They were playing decent hip hop music in there too, which added a cool little vibe. Unfortunately, my reservation was later in the evening so the kitchen was mostly closed down. I was able to try the corn which was quite small but had a nice kick to it. Tokyo Noir, LB's newest speakeasy bar was definitely difficult to get a reservation for, but definitely worth it. Hidden away behind El Barrio Cantina, and only distinguished by a Japanese lamp(提灯) on the outside, everything about Tokyo Noir has a lowkey, but classy vibe. The ambience inside was also really nice, dim lights, and a small intimate setting. Service was also really quick and nice, and it's nice to see familiar bartenders in the scene(LB nightlife is quite small after all). My favorite part was watching the live ice cutting. A lot of the bartenders would manually cut the ice as a show when preparing certain cocktails, especially the kakigori cocktail. I loved the drinks. I had the Astro Boy, Kaiju, and Drunker Tiger. The wings were crispy and moist, the skirt steak had a subtle wasabi taste to it, the corn had a nice cheese crisp added to it; but the charred edamame- damn sooo good. If you're gonna get an appetizer, get the edamame. Because we were celebrating my bday, we did 4 rounds of drinks. Our first round was meh. Everyone raved about the Astro boy on yelp so I felt like I needed to try it. Of all the drinks I ordered, it was my least favorite. My fiancee tried the initial B, which was pretty strong. It came with a Castillo cake that tasted like Filipino Mamon. He also got the Kaiju, which comes with midori. There was a lot of ice and was also pretty milky. It reminded me of the filipino dessert halo halo. Round 2, I got the nutty by nature. I'm a sucker for drinks with egg whites so when I tried it and it was really yummy, I thought I was gonna end the night with it because it was soo good. I was wrong. The other drinks we got were even better. Round 3 I ordered the chawanmushi flip. It has both a custard and umami taste to it. By far my favorite of the night. It was not hard to find, just look for the doors blending in with the mural outside in the alley. The food was very flavorful, you can really taste the ingredients listed on the menu and the service was fast. 5 Stars Tokyo Noir is a total hidden gem in downtown Long Beach. We got lucky and grabbed a table, but trust me -- make a reservation ahead of time if you want to enter. The entrance is super cool and speakeasy-style through an alleyway, and you ring a doorbell to get in. Very on-brand for the vibe. Parking was a bit hectic (classic DTLB), but we made it work. We came during the week after leaving another bar, and Tokyo Noir ended up being the perfect spot to wind down. Inside, the vibe is intimate, moody, and seriously dope -- low lighting, LA-inspired art, and a bar that looks like a movie set. They played 90s and 00s hip hop which I love! It's not a full bar, though, so you'll order off their cocktail menu -- which is honestly a plus because every drink is crafted with intention. I had the Truffle Old Fashioned, and wow... smooth, flavorful, and topped with a fresh slice of truffle on the ice block. Easily one of the most unique old fashioneds I've had. Food-wise, we shared the corn dogs and wasabi fries -- both were bomb. They also have sushi and a few other bites if you want more to eat. Tokyo Noir is a small and quite cozy speakeasy in Long Beach with unique and carefully made cocktails made with hand-crafted ice. Small bites are a bonus! Reservation is required as they are booked through January. There are some reasonably priced food options. I had a light appetite so I tried and enjoyed the grilled squid and the salmon tataki. Tokyo Noir served an in-house made vermouth with umemboshi plum which was a nice apéritif. As far as cocktails go, I really liked the Astro Boy which was very citrusy and refreshing. It was comprised of Haku Vodka, Sweet Potato Sochu, Bergamot, Calpico, and lemon. I tried a highball of some sort and the Strawberry Yuzu which is indeed smoky and you definitely can taste the mezcal. It was quite fun to watch the ice being hand-carved with some good company. While there are no desserts on the menu currently, I believe First Love may very well count as one! Parking may be a challenge. Some sort of transport where you don't have to drive is more ideal if you don't want to be circling about looking for parking and attempting to parallel park. We had an amazing experience here. It took us about 3 weeks to get 5pm reservations on a Sunday, primarily because this place is small, maybe holds about 20-25 people total. However, it was really nice to have an intimate experience where it does not feel overcrowded. We tried four different cocktails, they were all unique and delicious but Drunken Tiger was my personal favorite. We also had a few of the small bites including the Cali roll, edamame, calamari and steak. The food was very tasty, but options are definitely intended to be small bites not full meals. The presentation of everything was so nice, and the servers were attentive. Service was good as well, very fast and informative. We did not try the food this time around. *3.5 stars* A friend of mine posted about her experience at Tokyo Noir and upon reading up on it, the concept intrigued me - izakaya-inspired speakeasy hidden behind El Barrio Cantina? Tell me more. Tokyo Noir only allows you to book reservations 7 days out, so on a whim, I happened to check their Open Table and was able to snag a Wednesday reservation for the following week. What I didn't expect was how hard it would be for me to find parking around the space on a Wednesday night. They do have a dedicated parking lot across the street but there are limited spaces and by the time I arrived, they were all full. (also, note that it is a one way lot so you typically have to exit out a side alley behind the apartment buildings. The street parking is tight all around the restaurant and luck just wasn't on my side so I ended up parking several blocks away in a neighborhood and walked over. Look for the singular lantern down an alleyway and press the buzzer - someone will greet you at the door and check if you have a reservation and then let you in. My friends arrived before me, so they were seated at a table for 4 right near the entrance. Sitting at a highboy or at the bar would be preferred if you plan on eating (which we did) because the low coffee table-height bar made it hard to enjoy the handheld foods we tried like the fries, bao buns, street corn, Okinami corn dogs, and wagyu skirt (Most seating is really meant for 2 people unless you're able to take the entire bar space - like most speakeasies, this place isn't spacious. The food was good but felt more fusion that Japanese izakaya, yet I get what they were going for. I won't reveal too much else about the experience (although check any social media account & you're bound to find video of it all around if you want to be spoiled). For the drinks, I got a Hibiki Old Fashioned ($21) that came with the unique hand-carved ice ball, sliced and diced with precision by the bartenders. Then I asked for a dealer's choice and got a smoky Manhattan. The drinks are lovely but like any speakeasy, you only have a certain amount of time in the space - plan accordingly when ordering food and drinks. I like the idea that a light turns on when someone is outside waiting to be let in, but the flashing light did get a bit distracting at times and would kind of take away the vibe of the space. Overall, the experience was good and we had fun, but I do think there is some room for improvement - our server seemed distracted and overwhelmed and wasn't as attentive as I think we needed for the limited-time experience, and at the end of the night, she ended up running someone else's bill on our cards - it happens and she corrected it so it was all good in the end, and I understand the need to turn the tables when we've overstayed our welcome but it felt a bit rushed at the end.
