I was craving some a traditional American meal and decided to try this diner out. Overall the food was tasty and very similar to other dinner food I've had before. I was pretty impressed by the size of the roast chicken dinner! I also liked that both meals included your choice or soup or salad. The service was great (food was ready for pick up in 10 minutes.) Also we ordered close to closing time and they threw in some free dessert which was greatly appreciated! read more

Love this place and we have been here many times over the years. Decor is nicer than the typical Jersey diner. Great food and great service. Honestly, we've never had a bad experience whether we are here with friends or family. Tonight I got the chopped steak with mashed potatoes and my wife got a cheeseburger and fries. My daughter got chicken parmesan. We all loved our meals. There were tortillas stuck in my mashed potatoes (on purpose) which we thought was funny. I ate them, of course. I got the crab eggs Benedict. It was definitely imitation crab and it did not taste good whatsoever. I was extremely disappointed. The hollandaise sauce itself wasn't bad but expecting crab then instead biting into a weird tasteless imitation fish was not ideal. My guest got the chorizo hash and that was actually yummy which is why I'm giving 3 stars. This wouldn't be my top go-to diner in the area. read more

Went to Tom Sawyer Diner for a late Sunday brunch with a friend. We were seated quickly, and our drink orders were taken. I was surprised at the menu because it did not include breakfast. I asked the server and he came back with the breakfast menu which is separate. (odd for a NJ diner to not have breakfast menu by default.) I ordered my usual standard, corned beef hash and eggs. Surprisingly, the corned beef hash wasn't just ground up mush, it actually had visible fibers. The eggs were cooked as ordered, and the home fries were good. Prices were average for the area and the service was quick. Definitely could do worse. read more

Kind of mediocre experience. Pete had pancakes and eggs which I felt like were expensive because we were charged separately. It would have been cheaper to get the special which came with meat. I had a burger because it was around brunch time and that was all I was eating all day. It was OK. The menu seemed smaller than most diners and the bus boy was rude when I asked for more soda. We had a group of 15 for Sunday lunch. We called the diner 20 minutes before arrival to alert them to a large group coming. By the time we got there, they were almost finished setting up a large table to accommodate us all. The food (various salads, burgers, wraps, etc.) was abundant and tasty, and our waiter kept checking with us to see if we needed anything else. A very pleasant experience overall. read more

I've been here before and had a good burger, soup, chicken fingers. Came in today for breakfast and wasn't thrilled. Service was good, some food not so much. Pancakes aren't good. Chewy, thick with no flavor. Burnt home fries, lack luster hot chocolate. Didn't like their very greasy sausage. Most of our bacon was over cooked. Soup was good. A miss for me for BF. It is a clean place, average crowd for brunch. read more

I went in for simple meal; soup & grilled cheese with a pickle. I bet you are saying how do you give a 5 star to such a meal! Well folks the service was excellent, food was cooked perfect and was delicious! And then Edwin twisted my arm for dessert with Baklava Cheesecake!!! It was excellent!!! The waiter was super nice and attentive. The place is clean and has somewhat enough parking. The food came out quick. However, the cost of food is overpriced. Also if u have anything to-go, you have to package it yourself. They were nice to give a bag though. Also, u have to pay at the exit, which I don't like because that's how they get u to double tip. I wanted to tip my waiter because he was really good, so I left him $10 cash on the table. But then when I got up and payed at the cash register- it asks you to tip again and it starts at 18% lol. So idk... a bit shady there and I bet they know what they're doing. Overall good and service is 5 stars, great employees, great chef, but idk, I was left annoyed by the manager/owner's business practice. read more

Had a lunch meeting here today. It's Lent so no meat. Oh nice crab cake special w lobster bisque. Score, sounds wonderful. Too bad both dishes were actually ALL surimi aka imitation crab. Not even a drop of real lobster or crab in either. ZERO lobster, ZERO crab. So what I really had was surimi cake special and surimi bisque. Terrible business practice by the establishment. Went to Tom Sawyer diner for breakfast and it cost $61 plus tips. Ordered a salmon platter which came with 6 thin strips of smoked salmon, a Tuscan omelette, side of sausages and bacon, two coffees, one milk shake. That's for three people. Even though costs of food has gone up paying $75 total for breakfast is pretty steep. Not worth going out for breakfast. The smoked salmon was a bit funky but did not get sick from it. This was my first time at Tom Sawyer Diner. It was 2pm after running the Paramus 10K Run. I ordered the Acapulco Melt sandwich on the specials menu which consisted primarily of roast beef and came with chips, pickle and cole slaw. I enjoyed my meal while watching a bird cause explosive damage to a coyote on the Cartoon Network on the television. My meal wasn't sooo big that I would need to bring the rest of it home but other dishes I spotted clearly cannot be cleared in one sitting. read more

Living so close by my family always likes to come here for breakfast. The diner is off a busy road with a traffic light that barely turns red for patrons to leave the place. So you're left making a right out of the parking lot instead of a possible left to the other side. A friend of mine comes from New York just for their corned beef and eggs. My wife usually gets the corned beef with eggs as well, but after finally trying a bite of her corned beef I can't say I'm a fan. The beef was extremely salty even with the egg yolk mixed in. The table also ordered the Santa Fe and the Top of the world burger. The Santa Fe wrap had dry slices of chicken and barely any spread. The Top of the world burger was actually quite good though. The patty was cooked to order and it also had caramelized onions which made the burger something to go back for. Service was alright, they were attentive in the the beginning when we sat down, but after a while the waiters stopped coming to our table. Stopped checking on us or asked us if we wanted anything else. All in all, it's just an ok place to get a bite without waiting on a line. read more

Well I'm in for a roast again this place is absolutely awful after 20 years of trying to come back and think it was gonna be great I wish I had mistaken by the hinting flavor of Clorox bleach old food and pancake mixed waffle mix as a substitute for what I would not call pancakes. Definitely very disappointed upscale atmosphere is obviously fueled by these prices and terrible food not going to return here. read more

Been coming by this place for years. My fav gas station in NJ is next door. I've seen the parking lot overflowing. Today I had a chance to stop in for breakfast. Not too busy at all. They have a separate breakfast menu here. They offer all the usuals and some terrific omelet options. It all looked great. The prices were high though. So high I looked for the least expensive thing on the menu. Which I didn't order. But I did have a breakfast sandwich that was ok. Not worth the $8+ cost. My service was with a terrific smile and that did make the experience better. But I had sticker shock. The food was good. They had a bunch of regulars, which is always nice to see. The service is nice and pretty efficient. There's typically parking even during peak hours. The menu has all of the diner staples at prices you'd expect. The place feels clean. The dishes always come out quicker than I expect, however a lot of times the taste just isn't there. My last two dishes, a corned beef sandwich and a chicken sandwich were really dry, unfortunately. read more

This is not the best diner in the area. The soup selection isn't great and the chicken noodle seems like it's out of a can. The noodles are soggy and the chicken tastes manufactured. The salads and paninis are okay. The service is a great and the people that work there are super nice. read more

I must have passed this Diner a million gazillion times and never stopped, what is wrong with me? So a few weeks ago, I was here for a luncheon with friends about 15 of us, we sat in the back area of the diner because we were such a large group. Our server was super friendly and kept our beverages filled. We ordered Matzo Ball soup, which was really really good, loaded stuffed potato skins, and can I just say the salads here are HUGE!! seriously, you have to share and I love salads, but there is no way I could eat a whole one myself. I ordered a tuna melt which was perfectly made, I have not had one that I enjoyed as much in a very long time. A few burgers were ordered, cooked perfectly and lots of french fries, onion rings, a few grilled cheese on delicious grilled buttered bread and a couple of wraps, two ordered breakfast and these orders again, huge!!! Honestly, the service was spot on, everyone enjoyed their meals and we all left full. Also, the bathrooms are clean, so that's a plus in case you are wondering. read more

Stopped by not expecting much, honestly a lot of lousy diners out there.. I was pleasantly surprised! The service was friendly, the food came quick and the Sausage links were not from the supermarket freezer... French toast was on point and the coffee... well it was OK but at least served Hot and topped off. You can park across the street in residential area if the lot is full, don't let that fool you, they have lots of seating and have not waited more than 5 minutes on a Saturday morning. read more

I wouldn't come here again. These are one of those restaurants you would only come once and realize it was a waste of time. Let's start off with my waiter. Sadly, I didn't get her name but she was a Russian, fair colored woman with short blonde hair. She was a polite woman but when you asked her something she was annoyed and came off fairly strong. So, my food was ordered and it came back fairly quickly. I wasn't very happy with the food. I ordered a quesadilla and it was tasty but the flavors were off. It was a breakfast quesadilla but they gave me guacamole and Pico de Gallo so nothing on the plate flowed together well. The waffles I ordered for my mom were a bit burnt and the bacon was extremely crispy. The price didn't reflect the food's authenticity at all. The environment of the restaurant is cute and cozy but the food is a one time thing. read more

Are they under new ownership?! Ordered a blue cheese bacon burger. Not sure what I was served, but it wasn't what I ordered. Sent it back. When I questioned if they merely scraped off the toppings from the first burger, I was told no, they just fixed it. That's exactly what happened & the result was unappetizing & again sent back. For the cost of remaking the burger, they lost a sale & customer. Really disappointing! read more

My husband's pork was crispy and delicious with another incredible slaw topping, and it was so massive he has to take home like a third of it for dessert. We had the lemon meringue tart for dessert, which was also incredible and so refreshing for a dessert. All of the food was outrageously fresh and just outstanding. This restaurant is our new favorite place and on the way out we even made a reservation for three weeks from now to come back. This is probably the best restaurant that I've eaten at in Ridgewood hands down and I'm so glad that they are in the area. The restaurant adds a new vibe with food that is so phenomenal to match. I went to this diner with my girlfriend one day for breakfast in late February. I ordered a short stack of pancake (5 Dollars) with a side of fruit for them (6.75). I ended up paying 12 dollars for two pancakes, a strawberry, and a quarter of a banana. As another reviewer said below, do not come here if you want cheap good diner food. The food was gross to say the least, I ordered my pancakes to be on the lighter side, and they came out burnt. I am not one to complain about food to a waiter because I don't want spit in my new meal. Waitress was also nasty and SLOW SLOW SLOW. My girlfriends omelet was liquidy and the peppers inside it were old. I will never return to this diner and I hope others learn from my review and save themselves some money. On 7-3 we had a horrible flash-flood storm that brought my husband and I to the diner for a quick bite. As we walked in we were greeted by the hostest that said we could not fold our umbrellas and bring them in - so I took my new compact Coach umbrella (no larger than 7 inches folded) and left it in a stand. She assured me it would be fine. I confirmed that it was new and a bit expensive - but she again assured me it would be fine. Upon completing our meal (I'm sure you can guess) the umbrella was stolen. When I asked her about it the reply was - well I'm not going to watch them. 2 burgers and $45 for the umbrella I ran to the car in the rain. Burgers we just ok nothing great. Trust me the burgers were NOT worth it..... the attitude of the hostest was a big turn-off. read more

I can not believe how this place has gone down hill! Take a look at some of the waitresses; they look like they are on work release from the women's prison. The managers/owners think they are big shots, but just overcharge the customers...they don't care if you are satisfied with your food or service. To be fair, most of their food is average diner food and service typical. But I have had some real stinker meals; egg shells in the scrambies, cold tasteless fries, greasy burgers. But the service and management make even their best mediocre food that much less palatable. Pass up this place for Chit Chat Diner on Essex St. In Lodi, Empress Diner on Fair Lawn, both are Excellent with mostly cheerful efficient service. read more
