Tomatina of Walnut Creek was unfortunately a disappointment. My spouse and I came to Walnut Creek with plans to grab dinner. We originally planned to grab boba and eat at a different restaurant but when we parked the smell in the air called us to Tomatina instead. We originally came in and the older gentleman said they couldn't seat us right away and to come back in 20 minutes. We didn't mind and took a walk around the block and was seated right away when we returned and he brought us menus. A waiter came and was friendly, making sure he got the order correct. It seemed like he may have been in training. We decided to each get a lemonade, share the meatball appetizer, I ordered the pasta trio and my husband ordered the chicken parmesan. The meal started out nice with the drinks immediately coming out and the appetizer shortly after. The drinks were good, however they were out of pint glasses and came in a collins glass instead. The waiter mentioned the lack of pints and the smaller glass calling it fancy but didn't reference if we'd get a discount or a refill due to the smaller portion as a result of the glass switch. The meatballs were tender and had a good flavor. The sauce was nice and the bread was serviceable. After we finished our appetizer, there was a lack in service for at least 15 minutes. They did not clear the dirty dishes, offer water, or provide any type of check in. While we waited, my spouse had noticed a pasta entree (and a salad) was put up and was placed on top of a pizza box. He didnt think much of it until we started to realize we had been waiting longer than felt appropriate and noticed it was 3 different colors, like you'd expect for a pasta trio like I had ordered. Eventually the pasta was removed and we gave the benefit of the doubt that it wasn't my food that had been sitting out for at at least 10 minutes and they were just slow. A few minutes later, a waitress brought our entrees and they finally cleared the appetizer plates. I took my first bite and my food was cold. Not it cooled down but was still kinda warm, any food that was exposed to air was physically cold to the touch. My husband tried to flag the waitress down that delivered the food and her and another worker were talking and looking at their register with no awareness of the rest of the room. Given the service thus far, I just got up with the food and walked it over. I explained it was cold to the point where I said she could touch it (I proceeded to touch a noodle) and it's obviously too cold to be served. She apologized and said she talk the the cook/chef. My spouse watched as she went with my cold plate to the open kitchen and it was clear that she explained I said it was cold but they were not planning on remaking it and just reheating it. A trio of pastas with 3 different sauces would not be reheated in a pan so the assumption is there would be a microwave involved. My spouse got up and approached the cook and waitress that reheating the pasta was unacceptable because if we wanted reheated pasta, we could get something from a freezer section grocery store. At this point the waitress seemed shocked that we'd say anything about them choosing to just reheat the food. After a few more remarks they finally said that they'd remake my food. But that'd mean I had to wait while my spouse ate or my husband would wait and then their food was cold when we eat together. At this point, the service was so bad and they made it fell like we were inconveniencing them by wanting at least warm food, my spouse said we just wanted to settle up and leave. Again it took them a minute to process that we didn't want to stay there anymore and eventually said we could just leave. We left and have no plans on returning. I would consider trying a different location since it's a chain, but I will not be back to the Walnut Creek location. I give Tomatina a very generous 2 stars for the service at the very start of the night and the flavor of the meatballs. read more

It's been years since I've been to Tomatina. The outdoor seating lured me and the nostalgia of their food. I ordered their lunch specials menu which looked like a good deal (soup or salad, then an entree of either pizza, pasta or piadine.) Our server was friendly and courteous. She checked on a few times, along with another lady who seemed to be the manager. The restaurant only had a few diners for 1pm. Perhaps because it was a weekday. I ordered: Mixta Salad. - Flavor combo was spot on but it was drenched in dressing! I wish I ordered the dressing on the side. Chicken Spaghettini - No flavor and the pasta sauce was watery. You'll see in the photo I took that the spaghettini was sitting in soupy red liquid. Most likely because the pasta wasn't strained properly. The food, took a while to come out. I would at least expect my salad to come out first. Instead the salad and pasta came out together so while I was eating my salad, my pasta sat there getting cold. Called and was promised a 50% refund and more than a week has gone with promises of corporate emails and refunds on the same credit card but nothing has happened. I came here with my son on a Thursday and scored their kids-eat-free deal with an adult entrée purchase! I ordered the salmon on bread (I can't remember the exact name, but it was fantastic). It is baked fresh in their brick oven. My son devoured the spaghetti and meatballs--which even came with a scoop of ice cream. The service was definitely on the slow side, but the food made up for it. We also grabbed a chicken fettuccine to go for dinner later--they offer these meals for just $6! Sun dried tomatoes did not over power the flavor of the overall dish. Big serving to enjoy for lunch the next day. Will definitely order again. Steak Piadine - was huge! the Flatbread was just a bit chewy but the steak was tender, salad filling was bright and flavorful. Will definitely order again. I ordered the Pasta Trio which had the chicken Alfredo, meat lasagna and the pesto penne. to me, it was the perfect serving size for each dish; however, the price was a tad on the higher side. We went to Tom and Tina last night group of six and dinner was great. We were celebrating a birthday. Our server Jake came right over and took care of us. Got to start off with some water. We ended up sitting outside on this winter evening and it wasn't bad at all. There was a heater right above us. It was pretty comfortable even for my mom. Will they have some garlic bread to look good so we try to start off with that? They served with a warm marinara, which is also pretty good. They also had an assortment of hot tea which we enjoyed it as well. Then we got down to the dinner. The dinner were great couple got pasta dishes, so I got a pizza for the table and we all had salads. They had a mixt salad which was great. The food came out. They accommodated all of our wishes and Ava gave us a free drink for the birthday girl and then I have to say they had a great dessert which was like an apple crumb with a gelato assortment. Once again, I'd recommend this restaurant because the location is nice and there's something that everyone will like on the menu steak seafood pasta. We also didn't eat all of our food so we took some to go. And finally, it is a note that my sister called this morning and said that she left her purse there and she couldn't reach anyone this morning when she realized it, but she went back out there this morning and they handed her purse. This was my first time being back at Tomatina since my friends and I had a horrible experience here a few years ago (we had to wait for our food and drink for around 30mins and our waitress was very rude... I assume it was because we were in high school at the time). This time around service was fine and our servers were very attentive. It wasn't very busy and the inside was toasty and dark. My friend and I opted to sit in the patio which was very nice because it was a little too warm inside for us. The hostess was very friendly. The garlic rolls were decent and soft. The marina paired well with it. I wouldn't recommend the garden pizza unless you want to have a mouthful of spinach. I love Tomatina for Italian comfort food in a casual environment. You always know what you're going to get. There is a lot to be said for consistency. We prefer this location over the Alameda one. The service is better here, and no screaming kids to date, unlike in Alameda where that is more common than not. I order the spaghetti with alfredo sauce every time, sometimes with mushrooms added, and RB usually gets the meatballs. We'll typically share a half Caesar salad; the half portion is plenty, and they don't skimp on the anchovies! The food is always tasty, and when I'm in the mood for pasta, this place always hits the spot. The service has always been good here, with friendly and attentive staff. They have outdoor seating, which I prefer. Great for people-watching. This restaurant has been around for a while, and could use a bit of a facelift at this point. Investing into some renovations and sprucing up would go a long way in making the place even more inviting. Glad this staple is in downtown Walnut Creek, and we will continue to visit. read more

Tomatina's for the win! They came in cutch for me and my husband who were in town celebrating our rehearsal dinner. We called Wednesday and they were able to accommodate 30+ guests on Friday evening. We were immediately served drinks and salads came out shortly after. We got bruschetta and garlic knots for appetizers which were delicious! Everyone seemed to enjoy their entrees because I saw lots of empty plates. My fettuccine was great! Most people order the special (short rib ravioli). All in total they got us in and out of there in around 2 hours and it was great from start to finish. Kayla (manager I believe) was so beyond helpful and sweet. It's been a long time since I've been back at this restaurant and it used to be so good. We arrived right after the restaurant opened on Saturday and sat out on the covered patio. I noticed the patio was not swept and there was a beetle crawling on top of the table next to ours. The service was very slow. I ordered a Sprite for my drink and had to tell the waitress that the syrup was out. She fixed it and brought back a new Sprite but it still didn't taste that great. I ordered the caprese piadine. The bread/wrap was very tough and hard to eat. I also had to pick off some bad lettuce leaves. I went to use their restroom before leaving and there was a live beetle/ cockroach crawling on the wall by my head. Then I look down on the floor and see at least two dead beetles/ cockroaches. This was our first time at Tomatina and my husband and I just weren't impressed overall. Service: It was alright. They forgot/lost my order so I ended up waiting a long time for it while my son and husband ate. They also brought out our entrees separately instead of one by one so that was kind of weird. They were very apologetic about my entree and did make it right so I won't fault them on that. But it just seemed a little - disorganized? My husband had to asked for my son's ice cream twice and after the first time he found the person he asked on his phone...not getting it for us. So, that wasn't a good look. Food: The garlic rolls were very good! Too much olive oil for my taste, but still very tasty. My husband wasn't a fan of his shrimp alfredo and my pizza was unimpressive. The presentation looked great, but the taste did not match the appearance. There was very little meat, and I had to dig through the dish to find any. When I finally did, it tasted like previously frozen meat. The staff replaced it with Mama's Spaghetti and Meatballs, but that was not much better. We finally made it in after having this place on our list for a while, and it did not disappoint! Came with family and were seated inside--such a quaint, intimate little spot with a cozy vibe. You can see the open kitchen and the wood-fire oven where they make their pizzas and piadine, which adds to the charm. We started with the garlic rolls (absolutely drenched in a dreamy mix of garlic, oregano, EVOO, and parmesan--SO good) and the house-made onion focaccia. We asked for Alfredo, marinara, and pesto to dip them in (yes, we have Olive Garden kids in the crew lol), and they were happy to oblige. One of the kids ordered a cheese pizza, and it came out massive--like medium/large size--and was surprisingly flavorful for a simple cheese pie. My son got the Chicken Alfredo and added shrimp. The pasta was perfectly cooked with that ideal "tooth" bite, and the creamy sauce was delicious. Both the chicken and shrimp were cooked to perfection. I usually lean toward seafood, but this time I tried the lemon chicken, and WOW. It was a thin, egg-battered fillet, pan-seared and bursting with lemon zest flavor. It came with gemelli pasta in a creamy sauce with spinach, peas, and tomatoes--so bright, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. I loved it way more than I expected to. Someone else at our table had the bruschetta, and I was pleasantly surprised--the bread was soft (not the usual overly toasted kind), and the pesto was amazing. Service was friendly and attentive. It's a small place, and it gets busy, but that just confirms how popular and well-loved it is. Can't wait to come back to try more items--and next time, we're definitely sitting outside on the cute patio! Ended up at Tomatina's again. We seem to always forget about it when we are thinking about places to go and then, bam lets go to Tomatina. We have always sat outside on the patio facing the sidewalk instead of inside. There's a random piano across the street where individuals of a range of skill levels seranade the crowd. The patio is not a parklet in the street so you you don't have to fear for your life from a out of control car making a mess of your linguine. I usually get the meatball appetizer and my partner some kind of a carbo pasta dish and we split a caesar salad. The sauce on the meatballs is spicy enough and lots of it. I occasionally have a bite of the pasta which is also excellent. Service is great and everyone is super polite. This location is smaller than the Alameda one which we hit once in awhile. I like the DubC place better. I know its a chain and the food should all be the same but there is a difference. Also, full bar and totally adequate wine and beer list all at a good price. read more

Tomatina in Walnut Creek is one of those spots that's always busy for a reason...it's super casual, consistently tasty, and right in the heart of downtown. It can feel a little cramped and hectic, which is honestly the downside, but that's also how you know people love it. The garlic rolls are so great... make sure to get a side of ranch along with the marinara. I tried their seasonal butternut squash ravioli, which was good but had a lot going on flavor-wise. The potato leek soup, though, was perfect on a rainy day, comfort food in a bowl. Their Caesar salad is fine but nothing fancy, definitely a little mid. The real star here is the pepperoni pizza: simple, classic, and seriously delicious. Even the kids' menu is great, especially the mac and cheese (which I never mind finishing at home later). And their strawberry lemonade is my favorite drink to get here. It's a great stop if you're shopping or hanging out downtown, but probably a little too busy and loud for a chill date night. Service is okay since they're always slammed, you usually have to ask for what you need rather than them being super proactive. It was horrible looking at best I threw it out. I paid $20.75 wasted and I went to Melo's for really good pasta. I called the restaurant but was hung up on. The guy at the desk (guy with the dark hair) is very nice but our server who seemed like some new girl (with the large round glasses) was extremely racist. From the moment we entered the restaurant, she was making faces at us. She would frown animatedly while serving us. We were literally super polite and nice from the moment we stepped in - but she just didn't seem to like the presence of an Asian family in the restaurant. Her behavior was incredibly stand-offish for no reason at all and she behaved as if she didn't want to serve us. I think this server shouldn't be in customer service. Servers like her give a bad name to any restaurant. If she constantly has to make Asian/brown customers feel unwelcome, then she has a problem she needs to work on. read more

Hm. This was a let-down. I heard about this place from some locals and read some reviews (good and bad ones) before going. Overall this ended up being a barely mid-grade restaurant for me (which is so sad because I love the food in California!). The presentation of the food was lacklustre and the taste of the meals we ordered were really bland. The Bruschetta was tasty but noticeably burnt. My husband's Meat Lasagna (sorry no pic) was "okayyy", same with my Shrimp Campanelle (although for me it had WAY too many almonds. The alcoholic drinks were really no better either (that being on point could've possibly saved a star!) which was definitely disappointing. Had we not been somewhat pressed for time we would've likely sent back one or more of these items. Now with all that said, what I did enjoy was the energy of the staff and the ease with which they did their jobs. They sat us quickly in the covered patio area at the very front, right near the standing heat lamp (which was fantastic cuz outside was cold!), and were knowledgeable, informative, quick with our orders and very friendly! I didn't realize until later that this restaurant is part of a chain franchise in the northern part of California. This was a letdown for me, because that means they have the resources to do better. Note: We came home with leftovers, and after *adding seasoning* the food tasted far better than how it was originally served (msg me if you want to know what I added!). Truth be told I will likely not eat here again unless I hear about major changes made to the food quality. They are cleaning tables with a filthy wash rag. We sat near the bar and watched her pick up the wash rag, clean a table and put it back on the bar. They repeated that for the hour we were there. The cloth was never rinsed or replaced. No disinfectant on the table. The rag smelled of bacteria. Then she wiped the bacteria back on the table and the table smelled. So disgusting. C'mon Kayla.
