This was not my first time ordering through Tommy Thai; have been coming here 3+ years. I have to admit that the food you get served in the restaurant while sitting down for lunch or dinner is WAAAY better than the food you get when you order online for pick up! Just last week, my whole team from work ended up coming to lunch and we ordered 8 dishes (all of them tasted so good)! Today, I ordered some of the same dishes and was SOOO disappointed. I ordered Pad Khee Mao (veggie) and a shredded mango salad for take out; went to pick it up and my receipt said Apple salad when I had specifically mentioned to 'Please use Mango'. When I asked the lady who was helping me about my order, she says, 'You said no mango'! At this point, I was second guessing myself thinking 'Why would I say no to mango? It's one of my favorites and I had the same salad last week'! The Pad Khee Mao also had no flavor except for PURE HOTNESS from chili flakes. Food is good but service is bad. I was charged 22% amount as a tip which I never signed. Luckily now my credit card company going to investigate the fraud. When this place first opened, it was all great in service. Now, I've come to see the down hill rolling taking affect. Went there for dinner last night, two of us ordered three entrees. Only one came out first , fifteen minutes later, the second came out, and finally the last & third plate came out. Don't get me wrong, the food is still great and flavorful. However, these people have their priorities completely out of whack since all the take-outs/delivery orders were made first and set aligning along the counter as their dine-in customers sit and wait. I was really looking forward to a tasty meal. I'm sadden to say that this place Tom khai and papaya salad was not on point... the food was not authentic at all. Thai food in an americanized fashion... the papaya salad has onions, cilantro and cucumber mix it. Plus it wasn't "tum" like pounded. It was just tossed together... and they way they shaved the papaya made it the harsh to eat.... super disappointed. The tum khai did not have any pepper chili flakes. Their good is pretty gross and made me feel ill. The pad see ew was over cooked and the vegetables were rubbery. The shrimp in the honey walnut shrimp was also over cooked. The honey walnut shrimp came with chunks of pineapple or mango which I have never heard of before as honey walnut shrimp typically comes with broccoli. Don't let the crappy building and location fool you. I was apprehensive about eating at this place because it's in old building on El Camino sort of away from downtown Mountain View by a few blocks. It's the type of building where you find business fast food eateries that survive for a year then disappear. And the cheese Tommy Thai sign doesn't help the looks of the place. In reality the food is very good. They have Thai and Cambodian food. Lots of flavor in every dish I've had so far, and very reasonable prices. I hope these guys stick around for a while. read more

We were the only people dining in for lunch and it took way longer than necessary due to them paying absolutely no attention to us, had to look over constantly to let them know we were ready for waters then ready to order then ready for our bill. Being that I was in somewhat of a rush as I was hoping for a quick lunch before going into work I chose the wrong place as I noticed while there this is clearly a take out place as they were focused on getting multiple to go orders ready. On top of that the food was just so so, worst fish cakes I have ever had. I will say the Panang Curry wasn't terrible but not memorable, sorry to say I will not be back. read more

Tommy Thai serves average quality Thai food by Bay Area standards - which are already quite low. Thai food is meant to have a balance of salty, bitter, sour, sweet and spicy flavors, but most of Tommy Thai's food only has two out of those five (can you guess which?). Whilst their service is reasonable and the portions are large, this doesn't make up for the fact that their dishes lack the fresh herb flavors that Thai lovers seek out. They seem to be afraid to put lime and chili into their food, which has been only mildly spicy even when I have specifically asked for the spicy version. Thai lovers should skip this place. Krung Thai further up the road towards Mountain View is nothing special but it's much better than Tommy Thai. If you do eat here, I recommend the Thai fried rice, because it was the least disappointing of everything I have tried. read more

We saw that this place serves Cambodian food and wanted to try it out. We were so disappointed. We love Cambodian food, but the food that this place labels as Cambodian is not at all Cambodian. I dont know what happened today but when I got my usual Pad See Ew, it was really bad. We always get Tommy Thai when we crave Thai food -- but todays order is making me consider looking for other places... First, my pad see ew was undercooked. The noodles were a bit hard and white (not mixed with the sauce). My broccolis were hard. I have a feeling they cooked my food in a used pan for something else because it tasted so much like fish -- pad see ew with fish sauce? (Yuk) I'm unsure of what is going on. I ordered my usual from Tommy Thai 4 days prior and it was good. But today, I'm very very disappointed and upset that my food tasted so bad! Food great depending on what you order. LOVE their mango salad (5 stars) and order it all the time. Today, we ordered it to go and only to find out we were given papaya salad instead of the mango salad we ordered. I'm upset, very upset to want to rate them at a lower star as we drove quite far to pick up this salad. I thought about calling to complain but what will they do, we already paid and left. I'd still recommend coming here if not for their salads, tea and papaya. Portions are decent to large. Their spice level is legit unlike other Thai places. Their pad thai is more on the saucy side, pad khee mau/drunken noodles is alright and their panang curry is good. I'd give them 3.5 stars but since I liked their salads so much, I'll round up to 4. Just make sure you get what you order when you order to-go. I'm still fuming from not getting my mango salad that I ordered. read more

Yesterday night, I arranged with some coworkers to dine at Tommy Thai. I arrived and parked my car in the parking lot of this restaurant. I quicly entered the restaurant, dimmed low lights, some nice decorative arts around, not fancy, but cozy. I liked the overall atmosphere....casual and family oriented. The menu thoroughly guides you across the different dishes at lunch and dinner time, from appetizers, soups, saladas, great variety of currys, to specialties from Thailand and Cambodia. Every dish is nicely explained in its ingredients. My colleagues went for the curry from 6 to 9 level spiciness. All sounded very happy and satisfied. From my end, I luckily picked the Tom Kha Mixed Seafood Soup nicely presented in a hot pot. The soup resulted more than a comforting food, but a caress to my senses and soul. Since this was my first time in this restaurant, I preferred to be in the safe side, so I asked level 5 spiciness...I am really looking forward to tasting an upper level next time. Unfortunately this is not even close to authentic Thai food. I ordered papaya salad very spicy but it came made mild and with dried chilies instead of fresh chiles. Also I ordered Tom Yum (for $20, I can't believe the price) but it was not spicy or sour. The worst Tom yum I've ever had. A $1 bag of mama Tom yum tastes better. I will never order from here again. Disappointed with the food and service. The pad thai had a weird red sauce and no nuts or citrus flavor and the pineapple fried rice was floating in oil. Presentation of the dishes looked like someone took a spoon and slapped the food on a dish. The waitress took the order and then never showed up again. This place surprised me in a very good way. I went for dinner around 7 and was cautious when it was pretty empty but the food is solid. I had the Malaysian curry and it was really good. I had it medium spicy and it wasn't as spicy as expected but did have some that built up over time. If you like spicy food, maybe "hot" would be a better starting choice. Food is fine. Nothing special. But prices are really high. We had peanut sauce beef, basil chicken noodles, papaya salad and some kind of noodle soup. The beef was OK. No complaints. But nowhere near as good as at Bangkok Bay, in Redwood City. We should have ordered padthai instead of the basic chicken noodles; not bad but not great. My daughter ate all the soup and apparently liked it. The papaya salad was good. All around, good food. But prices were about 50% higher than they should have been, even considering the location (everything in the area is priced higher than elsewhere due to high cost of rent). read more

Tom Kha Gai Soup was ok - seemed to be missing coconut milk but had fresh ingredients. The pineapple fried rice was really bland with exactly 4 pieces of pineapple. The Panang curry was inedible-- really bad with a chili powder/cumin aftertaste(what! why?). Disappointing meal. We won't return. read more

Price is a bit steep for the quality of pad thai. Great price for lunch combo, The lemongrass soup was excellent. Never thought broth with sparsely added little pieces of cabbage could taste so good! The curry is a little sweet but that is how us Americans have grown to like it that way. Real curry is less sweet and takes getting used to. Overall a good value for the $7 lunch combo. read more

I made a reservation for this place for a Friday night; I came with a group of 13. I ordered the tom yum noodle soup with tofu, and I got it with spice lever 8 out of 10. The flavor was really good, but it wasn't that spicy. They used the wrong type of noodle; it's supposed to be thick rice noodle, but they used thin rice noodle. Also there was a bunch of soup and not a lot of ingredients: there were carrots, onions, and mushrooms besides the noodle, tofu, and soup. The tofu was soft tofu and it was okay; there wasn't much flavor but it tastes good with the soup. Overall, the meal wasn't very filling. The flavor deserves 5 stars, but the amount of food and the amount/type of ingredients brings it down to 3. I'm really sad they used the wrong type of noodles, and the noodles themselves were just average. I also tried my friend's Thai iced tea which was actually decent but it was pretty sweet, and I tried her pad thai which was decent but somewhat almost mushy. I took those into consideration when writing this review. This place deserves 3.5 stars, but nothing bumps it up to 4 so I'm going to downgrade (I tell people that I recommend places for which I rate 4 stars, but I'm not sure whether I recommend this place). The service was average for an Asian place, ambiance is okay but really hot (not sure whether it's because of the great number of people we had), and food was okay. read more

I used to dine in Tommy's and was pretty happy but something got really wrong with their delivery and pick up orders. Not only the same dishes taste absolutely different and not tasty but they also completely screw up the order. My daughter ordered gluten free modification for the rice, and asked to replace cashews with peanuts, and not to put green onion, and eggs as she has allergies. They also confirmed that they don't use vinegar. The order we received was like we didn't communicate at all. There was onion and cashews, and eggs in the dish, and there was clearly soy sauce which they said is not gluten free. No ordering again I guess. read more

This place is pretty solid. It's probably the best Thai place within the 5 mile radius of Sunnyvale and mountain view. Food I ordered a medium spicy pad Thai noodle and it was a tad bit more on the spicy side. I guess they saw I was Asian so they gave me super spicy. lmao. Anyway, on another occasion I also ordered the green curry with rice and I had to say it was pretty solid as well. The second time I was adamant for them to not make the dish too spicy and they did get it right. PLACE This restaurant is pretty small. It's still a nice place for smaller groups to just eat, chill, and drink beer. The service is pretty solid as well with the waiters constantly checking up on us. PARKING Parking is a little difficult. Because it's a smaller restaurant, spaces are limited. If you cannot find parking, I would suggest for you to find Street parking. COST The cost is on average for a Thai restaurant. We had three people and our order came out to be like $70 after tip and tax. We also ordered drinks as well. read more

At first it was Foster's Freeze? Then it was FPD Pizza. Then it was Mr Chau's, then it was Mr Chau's + BBQ. Now it's Tommy T's, which is somewhat related to Mr Chau's, but may have changed ownership. When Tommy T's first opened, they had moved Mr Chau's Buffet into the back where you couldn't see it. It seriously deserved a 1 or 2 star review. But sometime in the last year or so, something changed. For the better. The quality of food now, is pretty amazing and tasty. This is the best food that's ever come out of this building. I regularly order the Spicy Garlic Prawns, the Mongolian Beef and their Spicy Fried Rice. The prawns are always cooked to perfection. I've had it on at least a dozen occasions now, and it is really a plate to impress. Large prawns, spicy, perfectly cooked, all the time. WTF? If you like Spicy, this place is delicious, but it's never too spicy, even when I tell them "extra spicy". But it's not weak. And I'm not one of those people that can eat raw habanero or anything. There's a ton on the menu, and I've already found what I like here so I don't experiment much. I like specific things from specific places, but damn, the food here, NOW, is great! Some time ago, this was a simple buffet with food trucked in from one of the other Mr Chau's (most of which have closed down now). Now they're making food to order, and it's delicious. The place is small, the building is old, but the food is excellent. If you haven't been here recently, the older reviews don't really count anymore. As Mr Chau's, I would give this a 2 star rating only because it was cheap and if you went there at the right times the food would be fresh. As Tommy T's when it first opened, I would give it a 1 star rating for having the same old grubby food, only you can't see how long it's been sitting around. If you've haven't been here in the last several months, be prepared for some really excellent food. It's definitely worth taking a trip back here now, even if you didn't like it before. read more

Went in for a quick lunch with two friends. Food was served quick and tasted great. The staff was very helpful, and incredibly pleasant. Worth noting: I've been eating out at Thai Food joints for nearly 20 years. My lunch today was the first time that I've ever been given a Thai Iced Tea refill, without asking, for free.
