With the onslaught of exceptional restaurants in the area, the issues this place has are even more glaring; this is not the Castro of old where you can just phone it in. Let's start with the food - it's good not great. Thai food is generally known to be affordable and good value. This spot definitely isn't going to be saving you any money to offset less than stellar quality. If there were no other Thai options, it may be ok, but the Bay isn't lacking in quality Thai food. Most dishes are bland and dare I say pretty Americanized. Sadly, the food is the best part. The service is really and I mean really bad. Even when it's empty, they are still slow and don't seem to care at all. Complete antithesis of what you may be used at Thai restaurants. The atmosphere is mid. The place hasn't really been updated much over the years and it's starting to show its age. Overall, it feels like Amarin is stuck in the past and everything has just come at them fast. I came here twice, recently, once for lunch with a friend and once with family. My friend loves the pumpkin curry. We had it with prawns and it was delicious. I would try it again with chicken or beef. The sauce does not really penetrate the prawns. The flavor and thick texture of the pumpkin sauce and pumpkin chunks was good. It was not overly sweet, and the coconut milk and red curry was noticeable. I was not a big fan of the spicy basil grilled beef. Flavor was okay. It wasn't a great cut of beef. The Tiger Cry was not a great cut of beef either. It was a bit thin compared to another place. It's a grilled hangar steak. It was served with steam vegetables and a not very spicy vinaigrette sauce. My son loves meat, so he would choose the Tiger Cry between the two. The pad see ewe with beef was a bit oily and not super flavorful. The noodles were soft and the beef tender. I thought it was better than the pad thai I had here last time. The Pad thai did not have that much flavor and the noodles were very soft. Yellow curry with chicken is always my favorite. It is good here. We also ordered the Mussaman curry, with beef and it has ginger and pineapple. It's a different flavor than the yellow curry and it has potatoes too. Thai iced tea is Thai iced tea. If you like it, then you would like it. We were seated within two or three minutes outside. It's too crowded inside for me. Tables were wiped down but a bit sticky. They had heating lamps on outside. Server was efficient and nice. They were very quiet and respectful. They did not come by to see how we were, but they were super quick getting us our check and to go boxes when we signaled them. A lot of Asian restaurants have employees with English as their second language, so they can be very shy. Tip is on the total not the subtotal if that makes a difference to you. Food here was good. I would come again if I wanted Thai and could sit outside. The Amarin Thai across the street has a different ambiance, more casual, slightly different menu and much more space between tables. read more

Took my little brother here because we are both obsessed with Thai food. Although we were disappointed we couldn't sit inside in the cool sunken seating area on mats (looks like it is permanently closed) we still enjoyed sitting outside on a nice day and having a bite to eat before going to see a movie. We ordered the fresh rolls (with prawns), larb (pork), and a small Tom Kha soup. Everything was really tasty and my little brother said it was one of the best versions of the soup that he has had. The larb was a big portion which was a pleasant surprise. I wish rice came with it but oh well, not a big deal. They have a wide variety of different rice options you can get on the side, including jasmine, coconut, brown, and ginger (the one we ordered). The fresh rolls were amazing and I liked that instead of the peanut sauce they typically are served with, we got more of a vinaigrette that was nice and spicy. It was a fun twist. $85 for two with tip was a bit pricey since the only drink we ordered was one iced tea, but I guess that's inflation for you. Service was friendly and efficient. Not your typical Thai restaurant, as ordered something I had never tasted before. Came here in a group of 7 as part of an organized "meetup" social. Anna, our organizer shared spring rolls, coconut milk soup tofu, and house special fried rice. Liked everything but especially the house special fried rice, which had brown rice, pineapple, peanuts, peas and cucumbers. Even carnivores like vegetarian dishes on occasion. Wife ordered the $21.99 pineapple curry with prawns which came with pineapple, tomato, bell peppers, lychee, sweet basil, coconut milk and red curry. Rice separate from the triangle shaped curry dish, which came with four prawns. When mixed with rice, the dish tasted delicious. Ordered the $21.99 Hoa Mok Fish, a mixture of red curry, coconut milk, eggs, Thai sweet basil, cabbage and cod. The cod went well with the sweet red curry dish, which lent a lot of flavor to an otherwise bland white fish. Tasted like a casserole, something I had never seen before at any restaurant. When I first received my dish, I twirled my fork through the dish. The original Amarin Thai restaurant definitely shows its age. The place has not been updated in decades and the menu is as old as the tables and chairs. It's all run down. The servers are friendly and the food came out really really fast. Maybe too fast. The food was hot and actually seemed fresh. Just overall the flavor profile was just lacking. The spicy eggplant was cooked well but the minced pork was just a bit dry. The only real flavor here was the spicy sauce. The pad see ew was ok but the chicken was a bit chewy. Good tasting food, bad service, food poisoning. Went here with a friend and my son. The first lady that gave us water was great, but the second lady kept rushing us, not an enjoyable experience. We gave her that feedback that we are trying to have a nice dinner, quit rushing us on the check, tip, and to-go box questions. She immediately stormed off upon receiving that feedback and never came back with the napkins I asked for. Also annoyingly she used my napkin to wipe the table. I was able to flag down the other waitress that immediately brought napkins and water. The spring rolls were good, and the khao soi was excellent. I would like to give it another chance, maybe on a weeknight. My friend who goes a lot says he had never been on a weekend and had never had such a poor experience there before. The photo is of scalloped tofu, which is basically fried tofu that was trying to imitate the look of scallops via round shape. The good news is that the tofu was very fresh, had a nice crispy fried crust, and the sauce and veggies had a good flavor. The bad news is that only three pieces of tofu accompanied the dish, which was really tiny, given the cost. I was expecting 6 to 8 pieces of tofu. The green curry was a little bit different. Because it came with rice vermicelli noodles and the curry was a little bit spicy, and the curry had fish. I think I prefer my curry with chicken after all and would've liked the spice level to be toned down a little bit. But I give credit for creativity. I've passed this place so many times walking in downtown Mountain View, but one day one of my co-workers was eating Thai food said she got it from Amarin. The box she had was literally 2+ meals and she said it was good. With her review in hand, I decided to give it a try. I can confirm, it checks the value box and the good / edible box. Would I go out of my way for this? No. If I'm in the area craving Thai would I stop by? Sure. Walking into the store, I was sad to see that their special seating area was closed. Just a heads up, they automatically add an 18% service charge to all parties of 6 or more. Our combined service charge + sales tax was about $50 at the end, so that took us by surprise at the end. The roti was fried perfectly and the dipping sauce was great too. Wish it came with more sauce! We ran out but it's okay because we wanted to save some roti for our entree anyways. The mok fish was so tender and soft! Seriously one of the most tender cooked fishes I've had. It comes in a flavorful red curry. The coconut rice was cooked perfectly and I love that you can really taste the coconut in it. Service was friendly! They have inside and outside dining available. I was in need of a quick takeout place on Castro street on a dark Tuesday night, cuz my go to Chinese takeout place was closed for the day. I walked by this Thai restaurant and decided to give it a try. This review is about the takeout food and not so much about the restaurant dinning experience, although I did find a section of their seating setup interesting. I ordered Pad see ew with medium spice and roti with curry sauce. The Pad see ew came with some shredded cabbage on the side, not something that I was accustomed to. However, the flavor of the noodles was just right, with a nicely balanced blend of saltiness and heat. And the shredded cabbage, though not a traditional take, did seem to balance out the oil and spice, adding some level of control to the patrons, who can then "titrate" if you will the level of "taste." I would actually give this dish a 4-5 stars. The roti on the other hand was a bit on the soggy side, presumably due to the to-go packaging. However, the curry dipping sauce was pretty flavorful. Service was fast and they were proactive about refilling water. Ordered the vegetarian pad Thai. Taste was just ok imo but it was a decent portion for the price (can be shared with another person with an app or dessert and it would be a filling meal). I liked that the vegetarian one came with a good amount of tofu and veggies. Amarin Thai is a restaurant on Castro street - it has 2 locations. There's a lot of space to eat in, however we placed an order to go. The food took about 20 minutes to get ready but the staff were a bit rude to us when we ordered and checked in on the food because it was close to closing time. The portions were big and reasonable for the price - we ordered chicken pad thai, vegetable pad thai, chicken pad see ew, thai red curry with chicken (rice on the side), and basil fried rice with chicken. Overall, the food was okay (the flavors weren't balanced well in the pad thais, the chicken was dry, and you could really smell the fish sauce). I wouldn't recommend this thai place for pickup but it's a nice place to sit in for a date in Mountain View. read more

I have been going to Amarin over the course of the 8 years but just now doing this review. It is always a pleasure to be able to share a meal with friends at the heart of Mountain View. My friends and I shared the Tom ka coconut soup and other rice dishes. The soup was great but arrived lukewarm and the meat in the dishes was too hard, like old. This restaurant for me is the Thai in Castro, but nothing special to remember.
