Tommy's Cafe is now under new ownership. I am not updating my 5 star rating (yet) but would like to update my review. Today (02/13/19) was a very sad day, finding out Tommy retired and not even one person who used to work there is left. I rarely order take out here but I knew something was off when I didn't recognize the voice over the phone. The employee couldn't understand what I wanted to order so I told them I would just come in to place my order. I ordered the monte and a NY steak and eggs, two of my favs here. While waiting, it felt completely different. I'm sure I had a very concerned look on my face too, because I was. I was trying to figure things out before asking and you could just tell something wasn't right. I finally asked if the lady walking around was the new owner, she said yes. At first I thought it was new family members working. I can't remember her name (sorry) but she was super sweet and helpful. She gave me a glass of water while I waited for my food and we chatted. I could speak on a lot of things that I feel could use improvement but I wont. I hope after reading my review, you'll consider giving these new owners a chance and focus on what they do good and putting aside the fact that they probably don't anything how it used to be. After speaking with the new owner, I felt for her. New ownership began January 30th and she expressed it hasn't been easy. I mean, Tommy owned the place for 28 years, it's a lot to live up to. Also, as I mentioned before, there is no previous staff that is still there so it does not appear to be a smooth transition. I won't go into everything we talked about but do hope things get better for them. They deserve a chance! Although my food wasn't as good as it used to be, it wasn't horrible. I would still come back. They just need some time to adjust. It's not the Tommy's Cafe it used to be and I don't think it will ever be the same. But, if I can offer some words of advice to the owners (with the help of my fiancé), it would be to put your own twist on the current menu items and if you can't do it good, don't do it. Switch up the menu and make this place YOURS because it's not the old Tommy's anymore and people will continue to be disappointed. I want to come back and I come back knowing I won't get what I used to (which I'm so sad about) but I'm sure it'll still be good in their own way! read more

Don't waste your time or money. Bacon & eggs for breakfast. Zero salt (or any other seasoning) on anything. Dry toast - no butter or margarine. Hash browns weren't even close to being brown. Had to send bacon back because it was raw. Coffee was incredibly bad/weak. Tabasco had even been watered down! Not exaggerating!! All for the "low price" of $20.00!! read more

The parking lot was deceiving, it looked packed, but the restaurant was pretty empty. It was seat yourself, but it took a little over 5 minutes for them to bring us a menu. Which I find funny, since there were so few people in the restaurant itself. I didn't really care for our server. She wasn't friendly, and didn't seem to care for our table. Though there were 5 of us, she only brought 4 cups of water, and it took 3 trips for her to bring us the last cup of water. When we received our meals, none of the food was hot. Just kind of luke warm. Server never came back after food was served. Our water was never refilled. The food was less than desirable (minus my boyfriends French toast which was pretty delicious), and the service was not wonderful. AVOID!!! New owner, HORRIBLE service. I've been a frequent patron for 3 years, I was shocked to find plenty of parking and no waiting to get a table or both on a Saturday at 10 a.m. until I found out why. I selected one of the two booths available, neither were cleaned off and no one was around to do it. I stood up by the table hoping to attract attention, but after 10 minutes I realized that didn't work. During that time I observed a single server on the opposite side of the restaurant who seemed only to be taken care of that side. I walked to her and asked if someone could clear one of the tables/booths and seat me. She did. There was no heat on, patrons kept their jackets on, including the owner who i learned was helping serving. After I got my own menu and utensils, he came by with ice water, which I refused as I needed something warm, not cold. I gave my order for pancakes with syrup and a toasted English muffin with melted butter. I also asked for coffee with creamer. I received warm (not hot) coffee, no creamer. I asked again for creamer, which he said he would get. 15 minutes later, I finished the coffee and never got the creamer. I waited for more coffee and the creamer, but neither of the two (very slow) servers ever came back to the area. 2 other tables near me were also waiting. About 20 minutes later my food arrived, English muffin was toasted but arrived COLD, fake (chemical) egg yolk colored "butter" was on it. Pancakes were warm, but no syrup. Fake butter came with it. I asked for coffee and that missing creamer while the server was there. The other tables nearby did the same. I also asked for the syrup. I received warm coffee and finally the creamer. I also received sugar free syrup, I didn't ask for sugar free and hate the chemical taste, but it was better than nothing. Overall, it took 1 hr, 43 minutes to order, receive and eat 2 pancakes and an English muffin breakfast. Lord knows how long a more complex meal would take. I will not return again except after many months have passed and either the new owner will have improved the place, continue as is or maybe be out of business. I hope they succeed. I have been a visitor of this cafe for many years, and frequent this location primarily on Sundays. Today the dining area was empty. There was garbage everywhere outside of the establishment. When we sat down, it took about 5 minutes for anyone to greet us, we had to ask for 2 coffees and menus. The waiter returned with no menus and one coffee that was decaf. We then had to ask again for menus and and two additional coffees that weren't decaf. The coffee was also warm, but not hot. The menus arrived, and we sat for 15 minutes. The waiter also asked if we would need utensils for our meals. After several attempts to get the waiter to come back to take our ordered we finally ordered two basic breakfasts, the waiter had no idea what they were or what the consisted of. The worst of it all, 10 more minutes go by and we were delivered someone else's meal. The waiter then returned again and said they lost our ticket. This was now at 45 minutes. We left without paying for the two cups of coffee that took 10 minutes to get in the first place. This is truly sad what this place has turned into. I won't be surprised if they are forced to shut their doors. Worst service, it's was freezing inside and the garbage in the back of the facility was so disgusting. I won't be driving 35 minutes out my way for this place ever again. read more

My friend took me here for the 1st time and wow ... so delicious! We were greeted good morning (gm) right away my 2 diff staff, seated ourselves and then come another gm from our sweet waitress!! It wasn't packed at all for a Sunday brunch, but it should be because the food here is delicious! We ordered corned beef hash and chicken fried steak w/ perfectly cooked over-easy eggs (2) and hashbrown. I picked sourdough toasts as part of the 3 choices (wheat, and white), but my friend wanted english muffin, which was an added $0.50. Coffee was $3 and they continuously refilling our cups. My wife and I arrived in Renton early for a medical appoint, so we decided to grab some breakfast. We saw Tommy's and decided to try it out. Sometimes the run down looking places have the best food. Not Tommy's. The entire meal was bland and uninspiring. I ordered biscuits and gravy with hash browns and sausage. The hash browns were instant hash browns with absolutely no flavor. The gravy was thin and bland. The biscuits were okay, but that's as generous as I can describe them. My wife ordered fried potatoes, scrambled eggs, sourdough toast, and a bowl of grits. The potatoes were under seasoned and bland, the toast was regular white bread, and the grits were watery instant grits, definitely not worth the $5.99 we paid for them. It was the most disappointing breakfast we've eaten since our last meal in an army mess tent while deployed together. On a side note, there was only one waitress working the entire restaurant when we came in at 8:30. She was friendly and hustling to serve all the customers. It's a perfect fucking diner. They open at 6, it's quiet and gives you the kind of gentle anonymity that a place like this should. The staff are friendly and kind, and your coffee cup will never go unfilled or unattended. The bathrooms are old, the tile ancient and the light switches cracked. When you toggle the latter, the light comes on and flickers properly, to the point that you're afraid to look in the mirror to see what's behind you. It's exactly as it should be. Food-wise, everything came out hot and crisp; lovely crust of meat on the corn beef hash, toast with a stiff crust and perfectly buttered interior, an apathetic orange slice and eggs that congealed in an unhurried fashion around the hash. This place is the answer to the corporate, plastic emulations of places like Denny's and IHOP. There was a delicate smattering of locals, old trash and cigarette butts in the parking lot. No, it's not the brightest, the cleanest or a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. But that's the point. It's a fucking greasy spoon, America diner. I'll come back here again. read more

I sat there for a half an hour and they didn't even start my meal if they would've told me that I was going to have to wait an hour for my food I would've turned around and went back out the door but they sat me right away and made me sit there for a half an hour before they told me that my food wasn't even started. Our first experience since Tommy's owner retired recently. The new operators are friendly and seem eager to please. We chose a booth. Menus and a greeting arrived quickly. Our drink ordered taken. Coffee and water came and our order was taken in a timely manner. As we waited we watched our waitress deliver the food to the booth next to us. She was hit with complaints. This don't look like chili. I know it's not chill! and the Toast was burnt. We started to get nervous. Although we felt better quickly since no food was actually returned to the kitchen. The waitress stopped at our table to tell us "you're up next" it will be right out the kitchen is a bit behind today". The ordered of chicken fried steak, eggs over easy, hash browns with sourdough toast. Cutting into the chicken fried steak it was tender and cooked perfect. The gravy was not country sausage and creamy. It was a odd color with bacon and other lumps. I was not fond of the flavor. I could not eat it. Hash browns were hard and not cooked in the center but the outside layer had nice crunch. My eggs were extra large and cooked to perfection. My toast was just stopped at burnt. The jam that came with it strawberry was dry in it's sealed container. The "Big Tommy" hash browns were the same hard and not cooked in the center but the outside layer had nice crunch. The scramble eggs were good, Again the toast was stopped at just burnt. a single pancake was ordered. It came with a black soot on it maybe from the grill. All food came nice and hot which is a plus for breakfast. in the end our waitress crumbled up our check along with apologies when we told her we would likely not be back. I wish them luck. read more

A little diner with ok food that is stuck in time w/ it's dated decor....Mostly, I've had only breakfasts here and it's hard to really make a mess of a breakfast. One nice thing about the salad bar is that they don't use bagged lettuce. While the lettuce they do use is the nutritionally useless Iceberg lettuce, it always seems to be fresh and cold. The real problem is the restroom (mens)....It is filthy and frankly smells like 20 transients entered and took a dump on a heater.....Heretofore, I had never been in their restroom but I took a friend here recently and he pointed it out. That's the end of it for me. Restrooms that filthy draw into question the cleanliness, practices and hygiene of the the entire operation and it's personnel. read more

We go here every weekend when we lived in Seattle for their breakfast menu dishes such as French toast, pancakes, egg Benedicts and sausage scramble called The Mess. Breakfast served all day at this diner near the Renton airport. Curiosity finally motivated me to stop here for lunch at this family restaurant this past week. I'm guessing this restaurant was built in the 1950s and apparently has never been remodeled. Seems to be a favorite of long-time locals. I ain't young, but I was the youngest one in there. I was greeted promptly at the door and told to sit anywhere. I chose to plunk myself down in a booth with a table that had advertisements for Renton businesses laminated into the table's surface. Even though I sorta wanted breakfast, I went with a BLT and a cup of chili. Seated by me was a large group of talkative senior citizens. This group will dispel any notion you might have that elderly white folks are all conservative Republicans. Not these guys. In their political conversation they were zinging Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann (Sarah version 2.0) right and left. Gotta add a star for the clientele! I had my chili (sans carne) first. It had an interesting tart flavor. My BLT then arrived and it was good. However, the fries that came with it were just so-so and I didn't finish them. I've never heard of this place until the other day when we were searching for a breakfast spot close to us. I've probably driven past multiple times but have never seen this spot. It's a typical town diner. There are entrances on I think 3 sides. It didn't seem like there was one true entrance which was a little weird. Lots of seating so that was nice. The decor was interesting. It was like a lot of random things like a mini ship, one of those Chinese water fountain things, random pictures. As a friend said, it looked like everyone got to bring one thing from home to put in there.. It was cute I guess. The eggs benny was not traditional and I didn't care for it. It's a very old dusty grimy diner. There were flies all over. The bathrooms were sketchy and there were no paper towels. I got pancakes but I was unhappy with the artificial syrup. The food was okay, same as any I-hop or Denny's. The hash-browns were soggy, I requested extra crispy. We dropped friends off at the airport, so this isn't our usual food place. My spouse and I showed up to a packed parking lot at Tommy's and a full house on a Friday morning. A church group of 14 had just been seated ahead of us. We sat at a recently vacated loaded table and waited. In a short time the tabled was wiped clean and coffees were planted in front of us. This staff is fast and efficient and obviously, not their first rodeo. No one acted like they were slammed, they were just busy! Breakfast is served all day and the "Mess" was in my future! Just as it sounds It was a mix of onions, peppers, sausage, ham, potatoes and eggs topped with grated cheddar cheese and sided with toast and those tiny plastic tubs of grape and strawberry jam that are hard to open and are only half full! (and one is never enough). I have always been partial to Knott's Berry Farm's Marionberry preserves on my toast. Somehow, we received our meal before that large church group that arrived ahead of us and were extremely pleased and satisfied with the rapid service. The serving portions were larger than I really needed, however my mother would be proud as I cleaned my plate. My wife enjoyed the corned beef hash and also finished it off with the unspoken satisfaction she had just prevented starving children from missing out on breakfast in China. (Something both of our parents used to preach to us). Parenting by guilt is a product of the 50s! This restaurant is old, outdated, has a regular clientele and is great for people watching, Prices are low by Seattle standards at $8-11 per entree, our coffees and waters were kept perpetually full, ambiance is 60s diner and yes, we will be back. read more

Everything is the original old outdated decor from when it was first established, the fake flowers had syrup and cobwebs and what looked like mold stuck to em... And the food... how the what? My dad used to take my little brother and I here when we were young. I remembered it being delicious. 17+ years later it still lives up to my memories! Took my husband here for an inexpensive, delicious meal. Waitress was very polite and accommodating. Food was FANTASTIC! I had the Bleu Cheese Burger w/Bacon, no relish. It also came with fries. So effing nummy! The bacon was cooked exactly the way I asked! The burger was done just right and there was plenty of bleu cheese!. Lots of fries too! So good! My husband ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Burger and it was gone before I was even done with half of mine! He loved it! Definitely a favorite spot now! Will be bringing friends next time! read more

After waiting a half an hour to get our meal ordering a ground sirloin patty I was served what smelled like a rancid hamburger patty so they took my whole plate back. So i was left with nothing to eat. My wife orderd a club sandwhich and i told them they dont need to do anything but her frys were way undercooked to the point they were cold in middle. Tried this place three times with my family. This last time was only because we were getting an oil change next door and my toddler was hungry. I wouldn't have come back after the second time. The outdated, dingy look is.. well, just that. The bathroom is worse. Anyway, my kids ordered pancakes, husband got an omelet of some sort, I got 2 eggs and hash browns. All semi warm, no flavor, nothing special about em. Definitely not worth going out for. This happened every time. Wack. Tommy's is your typical diner, right out of a road trip movie. With locals chatting about the grandchildren, while they enjoy their usual: And a waitress with a nice smile, who will remember your name next time you're in, as long as your name is honey. The food was good diner food. The price maybe a little high but not unreasonable. I ordered the Monte Christo it was the best one I have ever had. Of course I have to admit, it was the first one I have ever had. I enjoyed it and will probably try it again in the future. However first I must try the taco salad. Now, I love a good diner: Growing up poor and rural, I naturally was accustomed to eating what was put in front of me at home, and being grateful for it. So my earliest restaurant experiences at humble truck stops, neighborhood pancake houses and mom-and-pop cafes were very special; I got to choose what I ate and drank (within reason) and could eat something different from everyone else! Sometimes, I would order something I'd never heard of, just for the novelty. That's how I discovered chicken fried steak, eggs Benedict, non-scrambled eggs, deep-fried foods and the luxury of fruit on pancakes, French toast, and waffles. Back then (1970's) the American diner culture had reached it's apex and had begun it's descent into chain-store mediocrity and worse, but amongst independent stores there was still a fierce pride in product and a tradition of exemplary service, attention to detail and cleanliness, a sense of proprietorship and real community. That's all but gone now, and in the wake of those warm, convivial quality neighborhood meeting places we have joints like this, with decaying fixtures, oily food made from the cheapest possible ingredients served without flare or interest. But sitting here, squinting with a sentimental eye I can imagine how it must have been, full of locals, buzzing with conversation, without fishtanks held together with duct tape or horrid, stained upholstery. It smelled of coffee, bacon and pancakes instead of rancid oil, urinal pucks and apathy. This was a special place, and maybe it will be again someday.
