Went in for lunch, the company was paying for it so I had a limit of how much to spend. The receptionist was not even smiling at all, neither was she even friendly, and she was outright rude.  I ordered shrimp fried rice and it had no taste at all. I had to get sweet and sour sauce. The sweet and sour sauce was not enough because they don't even feel it to the brim. So I had to go get more. This lady told me she charges 50 cents per sweet and sour sauce. I asked for two so I had to pay a dollar for sweet and sour sauce. First of all it wasn't even full. Not a good experience. Customer service takes you a long way. There's no need to be frowning when a customer walks in. A smile will go a long way. Work on the taste of your food the shrimp fried rice had no taste. read more

Salt bomb. Maybe you need more sodium in your diet, come here. One of the dishes, prawn with fried rice was inedible so we ordered a different dish after kindly explaining the issue. I had snow chicken and choked that salty nastiness down. They refused to remove the prawns from the bill even though we explained immediately. It's not like half the dish was eaten and we tried to send back. The dining room was stifling hot. Find somewhere else to eat. read more

we read a review stating that Tommy's Wok was "Best of Marin" on that assumption we booked for us and our visitor from Europe. Few were there for lunch 22 July 2021. The service was so-so. the entrees were poor to worse. Our guest requested no main entree but only a dish of fried rice. It looked awful and was judged ineditable so was left untouched. The waiter did return to ask how the meals were and we responded honestly that they were not great. We mentioned that our guest had only requested fried rice which was left uneaten. The bill included the main entree not ordered and no action was taken to remove it from the bill. Our take on Tommy's? run, do not wok out of there, it is not worthy of your business. One star because service is terrible - website says they close at 8:30 PM, but when we walked in recently at 8:10 on a Friday night, when there were only a few diners, they told us they were offering carry-out only as of 8 PM. This restaurant has the BEST Chinese food I have ever had. It started with the most amazing sizzling rice soup that was perfectly seasoned and had super tender vegetables, chicken and shrimp. Next was the super delicious pork filled potstickers, with the most amazing dipping sauce ever made from homemade chili-ginger, gluten free soy sauce and vinegar. We also had the vegetable spring rolls that were crunchy flavorful goodness. Our finale was the orange sauce duck, which is roasted boneless duck topped with a delicious spicy orange sauce. And, last but not least was the sweet and sour chicken which was perfectly cooked chicken, pineapple, carrots, onions and red bell peppers in a perfect sauce. Best Chinese restaurant around! I practically lived off of Tommy's Wok when I lived in Marin, and I mean that seriously, I would get take out AT LEAST 5 times a week. In all the times over the years that I ate in the restaurant or got take-out, not once was I unhappy with my meal. The food is always consistently good! The braised tofu is the best tofu dish I have ever eaten. I cannot seem to find another restaurant anywhere that prepares tofu so deliciously! The restaurant is exceptionally clean and the staff is friendly. I have searched high-and-low for a Chinese restaurant even comparable to Tommy's Wok, but there just isn't one. I think my only real complaint about this place is that it's really easy to miss the turn to get here-- the food has been consistently fantastic and the staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. Southern Marin in general is full of places that are incredibly expensive (and sometimes those prices are really high for what you get). Tommy's Wok stands out in stark contrast to those places-- not only is this place very reasonably priced, but the quality of the food they serve is incredibly tasty. I really can't recommend this place enough. If you're in Sausalito looking for a place to eat, head a little further north if you're looking for an excellent meal! read more

The unmistakable aroma of Szechuan style Chinese food permeated the air as I pulled in. I am weird when it comes to Szechuan food. Some veggies found in their stir-fries often fry my ass like canned water chestnuts, carrots and snow peas. I also dread the ubiquitous presence of a goopy looking thick brown gravy. Needless to say, Szechuan style cooking is not my favorite. Although I was apprehensive initially due mainly to my quirky likes and dislikes, I decided to give this place a try. I was glad I did. When ordering, I was careful to avoid these veggies I detested and lo and behold.... no dreaded brown sauce was found either. Sadly, the appetizers didn't tickle me as much. It was pretty much the regular run-of-the-mill egg rolls, pot stickers and some basic dim sum like ha gow (shrimp dumpling), siu mai (pork and shrimp dumpling) and steamed BBQ pork buns. So I skipped the appetizers and moved on to soup. The soups were mostly adapted for the American palate. I decided on the quintessential Hot and Sour soup ($8.00) mainly cause I haven't had it in years. I have to say though it tasted more sourness than heat. It was however a great way to whet my appetite. The soup had chockfulls of shredded chicken and organic soft tofu. To spice up the dinner in a literal sense, I went off the menu and ordered a traditional Szechuan Ma Po Tofu ($11.00). To appreciate this dish, you must first of all like tofu (duh!). Secondly, it is best eaten with a little heat. Thirdly, it can be healthy and made into a vegan dish. The rendition in TW was pretty much the original Szechuan version and surprisingly well done. I opted for a combination of tofu and minced pork cooked in an unsweetened bright red chili and black bean sauce. It was sans veggies and cornstarch so the sauce was light and not thickened. The Snow Pea Sprouts wok tossed with fresh garlic and shallots ($11.00) was an instant winner. The sprouts were crisp and savory with the garlic cloves tossed to just the right consistency to be eaten whole. Order this as it is not to be missed! Fresh Asparagus in Black Bean Sauce with Prawns and Jumbo Scallops ($17.00) was another good choice. It was a simple dish packed with flavor. The addition of red chili peppers gave it an added kick and was an excellent main to go with brown rice. Again there were no gooeyness, the sauce not overly sweet and the asparagus was fresh and crisp. My minor gripe was the prawns and scallops were a tad overcooked. The prawns shrunk a little and the meat was not as soft as I liked them to be while the scallops were a tad rubbery. Also the scallops were not jumbos as described in the menu. Overall, the entrees tonight tasted fine although not the best. It wasn't too heavy and greasy like in most Szechuan restaurants. In keeping with the times, TW recognizes the need to promote healthy eating by the judicious use of free-range meats and organic produce. The staff was friendly and cordial quite unlike some other Chinese restaurants. Prices are a little steep but then we are talking about Sausalito! I think that Tommy has a nice, fresh, organic, fragrant Wok ;) ! My roommate who is a chef insists that Tommy has some of the best Chinese food in the area and, after tonight, I agree! We did take-out and got won ton soup (best I've ever had!), crab rangoons (excellent and lots of crab), and basil chicken with vegetables (yummy!). My friend and I haven't seen each other in a while, so we decided to end a long week with some good old comfort food at king of thai. But there were detours all over the presidio, so one turn here and another there and what do you know.. Soon we were on the golden gate bridge!! Since we has to pay toll anyways, we decided to just have dinner in salsalito. Originally, we wanted to have dinner next door at kitti's place, but they were closed by the time we got there. So instead we went into Tommy's Wok since it looked pretty happening. This is definitely one of the fancier chinese restaurants, they have a glass window where you can see the kitchen. But honestly, you don't even see the cooks cooking your meal. The entire time I was there, I only saw the waitstaff eating behind the glass. The menu wast too extensive and their prices were about the same as r&g lounge in sf ($16-$22). Given this I would've probably just given them 2 stars, but the fact that they offer alot of organic veggies bumped them up to 3 stars. We decided on getting the duck with 4 lotus buns and braised tofu with veggies. The duck was pretty fatty and some of the pieces were either 1) hairy or 2) wasn't edible. I think out of the 8 pieces we were given. Only about 4 pieces were edible. The braised tofu was pretty good, they crab mushrooms in it ( which is my favorite)! Overall I don't think their food is worth the $30 for two dishes. But If you're looking for a nice place to have a date, then perhaps this is the place. But if you want good tasting Chinese food, you should just drive 10 mins over to sf and go to r&g lounge instead. read more

We have been going to and ordering pickup from Tommy's Wok once a week since they opened, but I've never written a review. We've always been very happy with the food, and the high quality ingredients. The service is excellent and friendly. I just wanted to thank them for years of good food. Today we got takeout for lunch. My husband got his usual Mongolian beef, and I got my usual lemongrass tofu with soft tofu. Please correct me if I'm wrong but... Is it me or does this place feels like an Americanized Chinese restaurant and have everyone mistaken this place to serve good asain food? I'm asain, and I've eaten asain food for my entire life, and if you've eaten enough of asain food from different places, you will be able to tell what taste like panda express and what taste really like good Chinese food. I prefer authentic ones where people shout across the room to get alcohol, Chinese woman forcing you to buy pork buns and telling you to pay more tips just cause. I can't explain what they do to make better food but they Can do it like no other. We got Chao mein and it was okay and bit that special. Their sweet and sour soup was the worst sweet and sour I've tasted. It was super sour. Then we got pork buns and that was the worst pork buns we have ever tasted. Bland as hell! The restaurant is spotless. It's the first thing that you'll notice. Service was efficient. Very subdued personalities here. Finding good Chinese food in the Bay Area is like trying to find good pizza. It's really hit or miss. To me, Tommy's Wok wasn't anything special. Just ok. The one day every week that I drive down to Sausalito for my class at the Academy of Intuition Medicine, Tuesday, is the one day Tommy's Wok is closed! I was told today that started last October because the owner no longer wanted to work seven days a week and chose Tuesdays as the day off. Darn! Because I've had to go to other restaurants in close proximity if I'm hungry before or after class. I drove down today, a Monday, for a meeting at the Academy and dropped by Tommy's Wok afterwards for dinner. I ordered a small Tomato Egg Drop soup (photo uploaded), Organic Baby Spinach with fresh Garlic cloves wok-tossed and a small brown rice. Oh My Wow! I had temporarily forgotten how good Tommy's Wok was! One of the restaurants that I was relegated to on Tuesdays is Feng Nian chinese food restaurant across the street and a block down. I've already written a review plus one update for Feng Nian and both times I gave only 2 stars. Well Tommy's Wok gets 4 stars because it is TWICE as good! Tommy's Wok has a number of vegetarian items that would also technically be vegan. That being said, I do rarely allow myself a splurge like the Tomato Egg Drop soup (vegan's do not eat eggs) if it is as delicious as Tommy's Wok's! Their house tea is a remarkable Lychee tea that tastes like it has roses in it! This place is a dream. I've been going for years and it just keeps getting better. Yeah, the prices keep going up, but so does the quality. They actually use free-range white meat - that's hot! Three friends and I went here on a whim when using Yelp on the go to find a nearby place with outdoor seating. The food was pretty good. The service was average. The waiter had some serious B.O. and I was the lucky one to get stood next to all the time. If you are gonna be doing a job that requires you to be up close and personal with people, probably a good idea to wash up beforehand... Take out was FAST, about 10 mins from order to food in hand on my way out the door. There's an open window so you can look in on the kitchen as food is being prepared. They also had a TV in the waiting area with the news on. i got the Szechuan eggplant and added in some grilled tofu. Tofu wasn't grilled, instead it was boiled, which wasn't a major disappointment. They add basil into the eggplant, which I saw when I ordered. Basil totally took over the dish and left me disappointed...I'd totally been craving this dish for days and didn't want to eat basil eggplant. Portion size was big, I think I split it into three meals. Fast order to food in hand. Beware though, the prices listed on their website are not what they charge you.
