The fish was decent -- fresh cuts of tuna, salmon, hamachi, shrimp, and a half tuna roll. Tempura was fine, standard shrimp and veggie. The spicy hotate and negi-toro rolls were solid. But the pricing is honestly hard to justify. $38.50 for 8 pieces of sushi and a half roll? Single pieces of nigiri running $6.50-$8.50 each? A basic salmon roll is $9, and a chirashi box is $42. Although this place is small, the fish is very fresh and is a hidden gem! Our waitress was very attentive and food was served quickly. I had the yellow tail scallion, tuna avocado, and spicy scallop rolls which were all very good. The roll was quite tiny inside but had plenty of fish. (Sorry for the bad pictures! I figure they're better than nothing lol) They were busy but on top of things. The seaweed salad was not the kind I'm used to but still very interesting. Lots of yummy cucumber. Ume shiso is my favourite roll but it isn't always easy to find, and I've never gotten to try a variety with Japanese yam inside, which just added even more interest to the texture and was definitely the right move! Although they do have a kind without. My partner enjoyed his salmon maki trio and cooked salmon skin hand roll, it was a large hand roll with a bit of meat on the skin, looked very filling. I don't usually find myself ordering octopus entrees, but the Tako Su' from the pictures on the wall looked like just what I needed and yes, definitely hit the spot! (Side note, the pictures and drawings on the wall are so cute and definitely helped me decide what I wanted! Thanks!) Fresh and delicious, also came with the same seaweed salad inside... so flavourful and good all around. Maybe I am high maintenance and have high standards for sushi but this hole in the wall sushi spot was not that great. First, service was fast and the portion sizes were huge for the price. I liked how large the pieces were that they draped over the rice. However, the fish was kinda fishy. I got the sushi deluxe with yellowtail scallion roll and the roll was super warm and fishy. The other pieces did not have a pleasant taste and the toro was fishy. Even the salmon that is not that fishy was slightly fishy. Also the fish was a bit too warm for me. Real OGs remember this place from back when it was cash and Amex only. This was my first time ordering since Covid when they closed as Tomoe and reopened as Tomo21. Pretty sure it's the same menu and pricing is comparable to what it used to be, but they do take card now (and deliver). As they always were, the cuts of fish are super fresh and super generous - like, each nigiri is two bites type of generous. The selection in the sushi regular is good. The problem is that, unlike 6 ish years ago, Tomo has some major competition at the same price point. Tomo is $38.50 for their sushi regular which is comparable to sugarfish trust me ($37 lunch, $43 dinner) and domodomo's box ($38 I believe) both of which are presented more nicely. There's also sushi 35 west as a threat, although I haven't tried it so can't say for sure. Nonetheless, I'd go back if I were in the area. (Tomo 21 Special: B) - This is a jumbo sized plate of food that serves as a large feast. The salmon roll was tender and well flavored. The nigiri sushi was not cut eleganty but very large and fresh. The tempura was quite nice and crispy except the strange design choice of serving an entire quarter which undermines the balance of tempura. Finally the miso soup was unique in they added tempura to it, but unfortunately I think that just adds some unwanted oiliness. Overall, the food is not the most refined on the plate but it is a large and paletable quantity. (Calamari: B) - The calamari is a classic and appropriately tender and crispy paired with a nice creamy sriracha mayo thats on the sweeter side. This is a well executed dish, but has room to grow in either flavor or presentation. (Oyster: C) - This was a unique and interesting dish where the oysters were simmered in a sweet broth. I personally found the broth to be a bit sweet and was hesitant about the cook of the oysters, but they turned out very tender and sweet. They apparently used to be known as Tomoe Sushi and closed in 2021 but now reopened. They get quite crowded and are open pretty late at night and once I was here around 9:30 p.m. and there wasn't any room. Anyway, this little hole in the wall Japanese spot is quaint on the inside. I've been here twice and the service was friendly. The first time, I got two of the appetizers listed as specials on the wall but the menu also has the specials as a list as well as a Tekka Roll/Tekka Maki. I got the Spicy Toro Tar Tar (or I guess tartare) and the Spicy King Crab. The former for $11 has no description and consisted of toro/tuna belly in a ball over a tomato like sauce. The tuna was essentially mashed up reminding me almost a bit of what you find in some poke dishes and honestly I don't really see the reason to do that as the quality of the tuna was quite good and it was let down by the texture. It was also on the oddly cold end and I almost found the dish refreshing in a weird way. The latter listed as out of the shell baked with spicy miso was delicious. The spicy mayo was light and there was plenty of crab with a fun mix of textures. I would highly recommend it even for $16 as it was well worth it. The Tekka Sushi/Tekka Maki for $8.50 was solid. A bit more pricey than most other spots but there was more tuna by comparison so I kind of didn't mind and just like the other dish, the tuna quality was better. The other time I got the Tekka Don/donburi for $39 but I'm not exactly sure why they call it said don as that refers to tuna only. I think a Kaisen Don would be more accurate. This comes with your choice of two between Maguro, Sake (salmon,) and Hamachi. I got the maguro again as well as the hamachi also known as young amberjack or yellowtail. It's sometimes listed as yellowtail tuna on menus but this is a separate species and hamachi is one of my favorites. This came with 4 pieces of each along with some seaweed salad, some pickles, and rice with a bit of seaweed. The price was high but the fish was high quality with a good amount of butteriness and richness to both fish and the pieces were on the larger end. I'm not sure if it was worth $39 but good quality fish has a high price to it so honestly it's not that overpriced. It was also solid and it came with a pretty standard miso soup. The prices are a bit higher than your average sushi spot but it's a nice stepping stone between low quality sushi and omakase and related higher end spots. There aren't that many of them that fall under this little category and I kind of wish there was more. Moved to NYC last week, so we are really fresh to the city and still looking around for places to eat. We originally were going to go to another sushi place but the wait was too long. Decided to come here on a whim. There was still about a 30 minute wait on a Thursday evening. Once we got seated, the staff took our order and the food came promptly. The ambiance of the place was cute and hole in the wall, which we enjoy. The restroom wasn't the cleanest as it's super small. We ordered two soft shell crab hand rolls, chirashi bowl, and a salmon combo. The fish was super high quality and I really enjoyed the buttery salmon. I think the prices are very reasonable for the quality of fish that they serve here. I also really enjoyed the amount of fish they give in the chirashi bowl! Glad to report that 20 years later it still is a quality sushi spot at good prices. I tried to visit on a weeknight around 8pm and found a long line out the door. The next chance I had I was here around 5pm, and easily nabbed a table for two. Service was good, though a bit inattentive; food was still delicious and well priced. Quality is definitely very good (the night I could not get in, I went to a pretty basic Japanese spot around the corner that hit the spot, but was very much so-so). Some of the appetizers and non-sushi dishes look good. Tried to young hamachi collar and it was very good and meaty. This is one of my favorite sushi places ever. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a no-frills restaurant with bomb sushi that isn't multiple courses, and this place hits the spot. They accept credit card and there's never a wait for walk-ins. They also do a lot of pickup orders. Every time I come here I only get the sushi & sashimi deluxe, which comes with so much fish I almost can't finish it. You gotta eat the best fish first (aka the toro) and not saving it for last because you will definitely be getting full towards the end. All the sushi and sashimi is DELICIOUS. And if you eat it in the restaurant (instead of take out), it comes with salad or soup. I also got the agedashi tofu appetizer last time and it was also really good. I've been here at least 5 times and I only discovered this place less than a year ago. The food comes out so fast and the servers and chefs are so nice.
