The food was great here, the flavor was so good and the broth for the smoked dashi had lots of depth. The spicy tan tan wasn't too spicy, maybe a 3/10 if you're okay but not great with spice. The spicy dip ramen was really good even though not pictured. The mango kakigori was so good too, with the cream on top even better. Also loved that there was an attention to diversifying toppings rather than opting for little to predictable toppings. I tend to be weary of trendy NYC restaurants. Sometimes they are good, absolutely, but other times they just get hype and that snowballs into popularity. Tonchin is the second one. The food isn't bad--it's pretty decent. But it also isn't one of the better bowls of ramen I've had in the city. The options are severely lacking, and the toppings are a little odd at times: the pork slices are as thin as deli ham, but the bamboo is sliced so thick you have to gnaw through them and get the fibers stuck in your teeth. I ordered the classic ramen; that could have been a mistake, I suppose, but I found the broth slightly bland and overly salted. It severely lacked the rich miso taste of the better ramen I've eaten. My table ordered appetizers, which were also good but this idea of a $10 appetizer that would require a table to get upwards of four orders must stop. The service was ok. A little slow. We sat around for about fifteen minutes before anyone realized we were ready for a check. I dunno. As far as swanky NYC restaurants go, you can do both better and worse. As far as ramen in the city goes, there are significantly better options. Didn't hate this, but likely wouldn't return. read more

I went here with my chickentarian girlfriend. I was worried that she would have not have enough options to eat at a restaurant that only has one non pork broth ramen. My concerns were unfounded - as soon as she took a sip of the ramen she immediately said that is was incredible. We also both shared the Tebasaki chicken wings, and I have no idea how they made those wings - the white and pink pepper really made the flavors pop and we cleared the meat off the bone in no time. My one *slight* gripe regarding food were the rice balls - maybe it's just not for me! The 90 minute sit down time limit was of no issue at all. My only service-related concern was the fact they could not guarantee a seat at a table vs a bar (they said I could not request a table). I understand seating is on a first come first serve basis, however I do not want to wonder if I would be sitting at a bar eating ramen with my date. read more

Let me just start by saying how nice the staff was. If we has questions our server was more than happy to explain each dish. The decor was also very modern. The wagyu carpaccio was divine, the tartar, wings, ramen everything was fantastic. They currently have a ramen made with pizza ingredients, weird but it worked! I loved it! Next time I will try the dipping noodles because we will be back! Also the desserts! I feel like a place is a winner when the apps, entree and dessert are all great. Came here with a friend with no reservation at 6pm on a Wednesday. We were seated a high top up front. Within the hour this place filled up like mad! It definitely had more of a lounge vibe than some of the more traditional ramen spots. My vegan miso ramen was very flavorful, full of all the fixings and all in all delicious. We got the shitake appetizer from the bites, which came with big pieces of toasted bread. But the appetizer was basically hummus with 3 pieces of charred shitakes up top. It was a totally bizarre dish tbh. It ate Mediterranean in flavor, and was way too heavy on bread before consuming ramen. I came here on a Friday night per a friend's recommendation. Our reservation was at 7:00 PM and the restaurant was busy, but not overwhelmingly so. We all ordered the tonkatsu ramen and two of us asked for their spicy sauce on the side. A little bit of the spicy sauce goes a long way and I liked the soup as is and with a bit of a kick. The portion was very filling and you can tell they start out with a very good ramen broth base. We ordered a bottle of wine to share as they have a pretty extensive wine list. There weren't a lot of options to purchase wine by the glass and when I asked if they had a full bar the waitress just listed off a few liquors they had. If you're in the mood to drink cocktails maybe check out one of the other places nearby before coming here. read more

Tonchin is great. The food is really great (especially the marinated pork), and the atmosphere is trendy, but also quiet enough that you can actually hear your table talking. An excellent choice for disabled diners - Tonchin is one of the nicest, most accommodating restaurants to disabled people I've been to, and unfortunately that kind of compassion can be hard to come by at other Williamsburg restuarants. I put a note in my reservation that I had a knee scooter and needed to be able to park it and elevate my foot, and not only did they save me a table that had ample space on the side, but they had even outfitted my table with an extra chair for me to elevate my foot before I even got there! So kind. The bathroom is also accessible, and everything is on one floor, which is smooth and easy with wheels. Would go back in a heartbeat. read more

What you don't expect: 1) wearing your winter jacket throughout the meal cause it's 60 degrees inside, 2) having to get the waiter's attention to put in your order, 3) being offered to eat your meal at the bar - which does NOT have chairs. So, go ahead and slurp down some fresh made noodles in fatty broth while standing! The luxuries astound. Tonchin probably has the best ramen I've tried in NYC. I ordered the dashi ramen and finished the entire bowl. The broth is packed with flavor and the scallops were so tasty. For dessert I had the soba panna cotta - big fan. It was a lovely combination of flavors and textures between the cream, honey, olive oil, and toasted bits on top. I went to scout the place on my own before I take my family with me. Super beautiful place, welcoming staff and attentive. I order their tonkotsu ramen $20 with extra noodles $4 and their delicious homemade spicy sauce $3. I also order an IPA $11. The broth is delicious and well balanced in flavor and texture. Their homemade noodles are so fresh and I think is the light up of this ramen, super fresh, bouncy, it catches the broth super well. I will definitely come back. One of the best meals I can remember. We had the original salad, the shiitake spread, the potato, the wagyu yakitori, the tebasaki wing, and then we split the classic tonchin ramen and the spicy tan tan ramen. Everything was amazing. However, the real heroes of the night were the tebasaki wing and the classic ramen. Fried to perfection, the chicken wing exploded with flavor and was easily the best appetizer anywhere in Brooklyn. More like 3.5 stars, but they just opened and are working out kinks. We tried a bunch of shared plates and each got a bowl of ramen. The plates (shitake spread, chicken skewer, and salad) were all good and generous enough in size and price for these times. I really didn't enjoy my smoked dashi ramen. The smoked flavor was overpowering and unpleasant after a few spoonfuls. My spouse liked their tonkatsu. The space was sleek and cool, with a young bratty crowd that was half fun, half irritating to watch from a distance. I was super excited to try this restaurant, but management needs to fix a lot of the operational issues here. We arrived at 8 for our reservation, we were seated at 8:30. We then ordered appetizers and our food, those took 30 minutes and the entrees took another 30 minutes. The appetizers were tiny and not that great. The ramen was somewhat better, but was extremely salty. Everyone seemed annoyed that we were asking when our table would be ready and when we checked on the food. Something is off here.
