Pad see ew was not so good, ive had this dish many times at other restaurants but here it reminded me of slimy chicken skin, the broccoli was barely cooked. Spicy fired rice was mediocre. Their version of nime chow is not at all nime chow, the rice paper is way too thick, all it is a salad wrapped in skin. I would go agaib for appetizers. read more

I agree with Susan W. Very disappointed. As the only customer at 2 pm for lunch I waited 20 minutes for under cooked chicken satay-granted a large portion but I only ate one piece. Shrimp pad Thai was also under cooked though generous and large. Worse the noodles were sickenly sweet and vegetables absent. I'm glad someone else mentioned the bad smell; I almost cancelled and walked out. I should have and will never return. Sorry to post this. I had waited for months while they were under construction to see if it was the real deal. Many Thai places in the area always feel like the restaurant got takeout noodles from the local Chinese places and just put some chicken and peanuts over them... I ordered the Pad Thai, sort of my benchmark for Thai restaurant comparisons, and was really hoping for a change from the blandness I come to expect in a small town ethnic place. I was overly delighted by its sweet and rich flavor. Appetizers were also tasty, and the service was very friendly and prompt, with a clean appearance inside. Some people will criticize me for reviewing the restaurant based on just one visit, but I know Thai food very well. I went with two friends for lunch. One got red curry with chicken, one got Pad Thai with fried tofu, and I got green curry with chicken. We all shared, so I got to taste everything (except the Pad Thai). The two of us who got curries got brown rice instead of white rice, and we were NOT charged extra for that. My companions got coconut soup, and I got an appetizer the name of which I've forgotten. First, let me say that the restaurant looks a little like a diner, but it is very clean and the chairs are comfortable. Impressively, the men's rest room was spanking clean. I've never been to Thailand, but I suspect that the curried sauces there are fairly thin. I think that most Americans probably prefer the sauces to be thicker with more fat in them, which makes them more flavorful, and I'm certainly in that group. The curried sauces at Tong Phoon are on the thin side and didn't seem to have as much flavor as the sauces that I get at my favorite Thai restaurant, which is Thai Taste in Swansea. The green curry was a little too hot, and the red curry was too sweet and didn't have a strong enough taste of red peppers. The vegetables were julienned in strips that were a little too long and made them awkward to eat. The flat plates that they use for lunch aren't the right shape for scraping up the sauce; plates that have more rounded bottoms would be better. The coconut soup was delicious. For dessert we had coconut ice cream (which, amazingly, cost only $2 per serving). The coconut ice cream was very frosty, like iced milk. Even so, it was tasty. (But again, high-fat ice cream is what I prefer.) I also had the Thai iced tea, which was perfectly good. My friend who had the Pad Thai said that it was good but that she had had other versions of the dish that she preferred. She described it as too sweet and said that the eggs seemed to be missing. She said that the flavors were not balanced the way she likes them, with too much of a spice she couldn't identify. But she loved the fried tofu that came on it. My friend who got the red curry was definitely disappointed, but she is harder to please than I and my other friend are. I introduced this particular friend to red curry, and she is always disappointed if it isn't extremely rich. At one point we all laughed about how critical we are, saying that we should be restaurant reviewers. The fact is that the food was all extraordinarily fresh, and the flavors were good if not fabulous. I'm not conceited enough to think that my tastes constitute some kind of gold standard. With very reasonable prices (no extra charge for brown rice, a low price for dessert, and a reasonable BYOB policy), it would be unreasonable of me to give this restaurant less than four stars. One more thing: The service was excellent. In a direct comparison between the lunch dishes at this restaurant and the lunch dishes at Thai Taste in Swansea, where I ate just a few days before, Thai Taste comes out on top. The lunch price at Thai Taste is 50 cents less with white rice, and 50 cents more with brown rice -- but you get more rice, the food portions are more generous, the sauces are richer, and the flavors are better. That's why Thai Taste gets a full five stars. read more

We anticipated a very good meal as so many reviewers have given Tong Phoon 5 stars and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is very clean and bright and the staff is welcoming and attentive. We had the cheese pockets as this was something new for us and they were great. My wife had the chicken pad Thai and I had the calamari Pad Thai. Both dishes were excellent and the portion size was just right for one person. Another plus is the restaurant has a parking lot that it shares with the restaurant next to it. It is a small lot however we were able to get a parking space. We look forward to soon returning. read more

Our favorite Thai restaurant in the area! The food is pretty good, the homemade deserts are wonderful, the service is always attentive and friendly, the price is reasonable (actually, really cheap for the area, depending on what you order), and the place is always immaculate. The owners are very nice. On nights when other restaurants are overflowing, this place always has a seat for you right away. Very disappointed in this new Thai restaurant. The food was just fair and the atmosphere is worse. The night we ate there the outside temp. was about 15 degrees and inside it was in the 50's. They moved a space heater near our table since we were the only people in the place. We ate with our coats on. The inside temperature never got above 60. They are BYOB but charged us $2.00 each for a glass with some ice. We won't go there again. read more

Went there the first time last week and had Drunken Noodles with tofu. I'm not a Thai food expert but I'd say it was essentially pad kee mao, which is one of my preferred Thai dishes. Very nice flavor and probably ranks as some of the best pad kee mao I've eaten. The tofu was cooked perfectly, very tender but not soggy. My wife had the same thing but with chicken and I thought the tofu was clearly better, but maybe that's just me. And FYI it's byob. We will definitely go back. read more

First time here and loved it. Dinner was about $14 a plate. All I can say is YUM! Our party had the massaman, green curry, sweet and sour chicken and garlic sauté chicken. They were all fantastic! I want to give this place a better review because the people seemed very nice, but I just felt like it didn't live up to expectations. Went in Sunday afternoon and they only have the dinner menu available on Sundays so the meal prices of $10 that I was expecting weren't available. We got two cokes, two appetizers, and two curry dishes and the total was $52. Now that's a bit pricy for lunch at a little thai restaurant, but I'm willing to pay it if the food is worth it. The flavors were decent but unfortunately the chicken and veggies were all very chewy and made me feel as if they might have just microwaved some frozen food. I got Mind's Broccoli with beef, and it was extra for the beef- which I'm fine with if it's worth the amount, but I had just a few pieces of beef, and mostly broccoli. The food is good! Just swell! I've been meaning to write a review about Tong Phoon for some time, it really is a very nice place, and the food is authentic and refreshingly fresh. I live in Bristol so I go to Tong Phoon maybe twice a month, plus I'm pretty picky when it comes to my thai. The service is impeccable, when you go there and you sit down to eat you think of all the places that you have been, that the waitstaff was sub par. One of the best things too, is that when you order out you get huge portions I'm talking you got more than you can eat portions and have another little meal after that, and I'm 180 pound 25-year-old male and I'm pretty active. All the veggies are fresh of course and I'd venture to say cooked to perfection. Personally I'm a big fan of the thai coffee and the Thai orange tea and I have a pension for the curries, they're exquisitely put together, to render an aroma I've not smelled since I was last in Southeast Asia. Don't forget to try the fried rice, hands-down better than any other place in Bristol Warren Portsmouth or Newport, there, I said it. read more
