Up in Walnut Grove on my boat for a week and have went to Tony's 3 times now. Food is consistent and great. Philly cheesesteak, steak sandwich, and the burger are yummy! My boyfriend and I were headed home from the Bay area after celebrating his 21st birthday and decided to stop in and grab a drink and a bite. This was our first time visiting this establishment and our experience was very pleasant. The Bartender was so nice and the patrons were such a hoot, they treated him to a birthday shot and beer. What has happened to this restaurant? We've been here before and have enjoyed it each time in the past BUT tonight it appears they grabbed just anyone to cook tonight! I asked for an Arnold Palmer and pretty much got just unsweetened ice tea. I let that go, no big deal. The salad was just plain lettuce with a few slices.of tomatoes with blue cheese dressing The blue cheese had one huge chunk of cheese. I ordered the chicken mornay the hubby ordered the veal mornay. I may be checking in the hospital tonight for salmonella poisoning! I took a large bite into my chicken and it was extremely chewing. I asked the husband if I had his veal because mine was chewy. He said he had his veal I looked down at my plate and realized my chicken was still RAW!! again I try look past this returned it to the cook who noticed indeed it was still RAW! She said to give her a few minutes to finish cooking it! I waited as asked to get my food back and began eating again This time I find a piece of hair entwined in the cheesy mornay! That was it I couldn't eat anymore. The hubby couldn't finish his meal either the veal was fatty and the mornay sauce tasted dated. Both baked potatoes were not freshly baked they both appeared from the night before. The waitress noticed my plate was missing and she asked what happened. I told her I have it back to the cook because the choice was raw. She appeared really disturbed by it. So much so we didn't see her again the remainder of the night! We were never offered refills or check-ins by the waitress. When we were looking for the waitress all we saw was the bartender tending to a bar full of patrons. I had driven past Tony's for years to go fishing along the Delta, and when I finally stopped in here, I was hooked! ;) So whether I am driving through or not, I always make time for trips out to Tony's because this is one of my favorite bars. Tony's is awesome because everyone here is so welcoming and fun! The locals are a blast to sit and chat fish with, maybe take a few shots! Haha The first time I came here I did a "cream shot", and each time I bring a new friend here, they always have to do one! Haha Just for laughs. ;) I love to grab a drink and sit out back on the patio to have some laughs with friends- especially during the nice Spring weather. I have only had a few things on the menu, but the few that I have had have been delicious! && the Portuguese beans are BOMB! :) I would recommend Tony's to anyone driving through the area, or just wanting to try a new place. read more

We went to Tonys for the first time for dinner on Friday February 8th. Reason being our favorite place in the Delta area was closed. The bar when we walked in looked great but when we got to the restaurant side with no one in the place that through up the red flag. But we thought let's give it a try. With me being in food business for many years I should have know and also listened to my daughter who wanted to leave. I had the steak & shrimp which was OK but had issues My steak had huge amounts of fat around it and should have been trimmed before serving and the shrimp had good flavor but were very small and looked liked they were just steamed. They could have easily grilled the shrimp for a better look and flavor. The baked potato was wrapped in foil back from the 70s style . Overall no flavor in the steak I'm guessing low grade meat they are purchasing , the other table too was complaining also about the steak . We heard the customer say " we will just take it home and give it to our dogs". No offer to bring steak sauce or refill on our beer or wine. Believe me I needed steak sauce !! My wife had the Monterey Chicken Sandwich which she said was good but her fries were greasy and dark color , looked like the fryer oil had not been changed. My daughters fries was the same. Our salads came in a old wooden bowl like again from the 70s style and the lettuce had real low chill on it so you could taste the 3 day old lettuce flavor. There was no offer for desert or coffee or something from the bar thinking maybe an after dinner drink . Took for ever to get the check even with now only 3 tables in the place . They also brought us beans and rice this came from the cook not our waitress she brought them with not try just using her hands to carry around the rim of each small bowl. This place needs a complete re-do to bring them up to a minimum of serving good food and also get into the year 2000 of appearance . I' m speaking just the restraint side not the bar . They really need to have their food service they are buying LOOKED AT. Plus keep the cook in the kitchen . This is perfect place in the delta and trust me we have eaten at a lot of them in the delta to have great good just like their competitors down the street or in other local areas around l. Tony's Place is AMAZING! 1) The drinks are as good as it gets. With great prices, stiff pours, and expert bartenders-- you can't get any better than this! I highly recommend Saturday daytime bartender Halee's Bloody Mary's, they're DELICIOUS! Also, the rest of the bartenders memorized my drink of choice after just a couple of times being there. 2) Complimentary food! The owners of Tony's love to feed their friends and customers. They have a buffet of small bites for any of their larger parties, but they also do it for things like Monday Night Football and birthdays! It's SO SO GOOD. 3) Special Events-- Tony's is always throwing a party! I personally love their annual Wild Game Feeds (where you get to eat all of the local hunters' catches that season) and the Bordello Ball, a lingerie party that's been going on for many years because Tony's was a bordello at one point. The people are fantastic, the food is good, and it's a ton of fun! What more could you want? read more

ate there last night and it was the worst place we have ever eaten at. Tony's used to be a landmark restaurant and reservations only on the weekend twenty years ago but now its a different story. There was one other couple in the whole place having dinner last night. The menu has only four items and we were not even served a glass of water till we received our dinner. We both ordered the new york steak and shrimp which came cinderized and tough as leather. The bread served was in little 1-2 inch pieces kinda blackened and no butter. The bloody mary I ordered was good and the Portuguese beans they serve with the meal were also very good. When we brought the cinderized steaks to the waitresses attention she offered to give us extra beans to take home which I accepted because they are very good. No refund or any other compensation for the leather we were served in lieu of a steak was offered. Now for the record I like well done steaks but burnt very dark brown all the way through full of gristle is even beyond my ability to eat. I hope the new owner reads this review and takes steps to return Tony's to the way it used to be. read more

Well the beans had a great aroma as we walked in for lunch recently, Sat in a area by the fireplace only one other family eating at the time...Ordered the chili burger with the side of salad and beans. Hubby said the burger was overdone and not so good...The salad was just lettuce...dressing was o.k and the beans had a good flavor. Cash only. read more

My husband and I took off on a spontaneous drive and after a little wine tasting near Lodi, we ended up in Walnut Grove at Tony's. Late afternoon, a cold beer in a random spot sounded delicious. They happened to be celebrating the boss man's birthday, Mike, I believe. They were grilling chicken, salmon burgers, made great rice pilaf and red beans, coleslaw, etc. They invited us to join...you don't find that kind of hospitality very often! We had lots of fun with the bartender, Johnny, I think?? He made the best bloody mary, awesome! They have a great jukebox and all kinds of music are welcome - very wide range of people! We stayed until midnight and Johnny also helped us get a hotel room close by, since we definitely were not driving home at that point! I wish it was closer, we'd stop by more often! read more

Stopped in last Saturday for a beer. Haven't been in there since moving away in '89. It was great to see Patty still there and the beer as cold as I remember it! Also served lunch. My husband and I went for a cruise on our skoot along Hwy 160, we happened to spy this restaurant from across the river and decided to stop in to get dinner. It's kind of a hole-in-the-wall, but man the Philly cheese steak there was to die for. Tender juicy meat sauteed with mushrooms, onions, green peppers with melted cheese served up on a toasted roll. The fries were also DELISH homemade fries seasoned perfectly. We will definitely be back! Just make sure you bring cash, as they don't take charge. This place the absolute best! My girlfriend, best friend and myself stumbled upon this place last night around 11:30pm while just looking for a nice spot by the river. We thought maybe there would be just a couple folks hanging out since the town was so quiet but when we walked it was the most poppin' place by in the delta. Karaoke and strong drinks with great prices! $6 for a good size crown and coke, with mostly crown and a splash of coke. After 2 I was feeling really good, chatting it up with some great people and awesome bartender. We live up in Sacramento but this place is well worth the drive. read more

Stopped by here while out for a ride. It's tucked back off Main Street but wonderful food, had burger and fries and was very tasty and reasonably priced for quality food. I don't know why Grahm is ripping on the food. Everytime I have eaten there it's been great....and I have eaten there many times! They have great sandwiches at lunch and amazing dinner options! It is a small town bar and you have to love dive bars to appreciate this gem. It's very much a local bar, but these locals love anyone as long as you come in with a good attitude and a desire to drink and have a good time. Unforutnaly for the only three bad reviews, this place is not a bad review. It's a small bar off the river, I'm not sure what people are expecting, but I went in for a drink and it was a great price, and great service. Very friendly and helpful. It's a bar atmosphere, not a first response to restaurant atmosphere, but I would still eat here again.. "It's not bar food, but restaurant food; in a bar atmosphere, I think people may get confused with their senses." It has a cabin type lounge with many couches, an inside bar, and an outside patio. Cute little bar. If you're stuck in Walnut Grove might as well get drunk here. It's a small place and the people seem friendly. I like that they have an outdoor area so you can drink AND smoke, which is a novelty in California. They also have a nice dance area and the couple of times I've been here there was a live band. I went on Halloween, they had a costume contest. The place was hopping, but it's really just a lot of locals, so it's not really a desitination to go out of your way to go to. read more

I had not been to Tony's Place for 35 years, so i went yesterday for lunch. Big mistake. I ordered the steak sandwich and it was awful. I asked for rare and the meat was cooked to death. There was a lot of gristle. The sauted mushroom's were from a can. If you are in the Walnut Grove area and want to have lunch, go to Giustis or Wimpies. Ate dinner at Tony's Place and was pleasantly surprised. Tony's is like walking into a bar from the 50's or 60's. Restaurant area is in the back, past the old style bar. They serve COLD beer and good basic drinks.. Dinner is served only on the weekends. Menu is limited...steak, veal, chicken, some salads. Generally old school fare. Lunch served during the week. The lunch menu was also available for ordering at dinner. Includes various hamburgers and hot sandwiches...cheese steak, french dip,chicken, etc. We decided to have dinner. The place is not fancy....but clean and cozy. Lots of pictures of the original Tony on the restaurant walls. Husband had NY steak and shrimp with sautéed mushrooms and baked potato. Came with dinner salad and some tasty Portugese beans and rice. (Add the hot sauce they offer you for the beans. Good stuff.) I had a cheese steak sandwich with great french fries. All in all.....pretty good meals. It is not fancy, but a great place to stop if you are in the Delta area and want to check out a place for dinner and drinks with an old time vibe. read more

Awesome drinks for a much better price than most bars! Lots of locals willing to chat and there's always a friendly atmosphere. But for the love of GOD DO NOT go when that guy Talian (sp?) is working! I swear he's the child of satan and hitler.
