Let me start off by saying that I am a frozen banana connoisseur. I live about 5 minutes away and have been frequenting the other two joints for years. Nostalgia over quality is the question. Dad's, vs Sugar n Spice are the Classic Balboa Island stands that have been selling chocolate covered bananas and the world famous Balboa Bars, hand dipped chocolate ice cream treat. Every summer you will see lines of people in front of these vintage stands knowing they have agonized over which one of these places is the best or their favorite. But the truth is Dad's and Sugar & Spice have both been sold and the original owners who started these decades ago are no longer dipping bars for the throngs of summer beach goers. Most people go to both places as they are so cute and debate which is their favorite. It can divide a family just like USC vs UCLA. But the honest truth, throwing out Nostalgia, the best Balboa Bar on the Island is at "Too Sweet". It's not even close. The chocolate is candy grade at this location and thicker and the ice cream bar itself is a creamer product. Ice cream quality alone goes to Too Sweet, throw in the chocolate and it's a winner. To top it off, the price is the same. So buy a bar at one of the cute cottage stands one night on your stay on the Island, and then go to Too Sweet the next night. Let the kids get yogurt and put a bunch of fun toppings on it. But the adults buy the Balboa Bar, and you will see. Makes it hard to go back to Dad's and Sugar n Spice, not really. There is something about Nostalgia that has me buying Balboa Bars at both places, even though it's more of a cheap ice milk and watery chocolate bar. Traditions are like that, BUT I always sneak down to get a great treat at Too Sweet. They are decadent. Try the double dip on a splurge night, that costs a little extra, maybe a buck more. A couple of the kids had frozen yogurt with toppings, a couple of us had chocolate/peanut butter shells, pretzel sticks, chocolate and white chocolate oreos. Everything was great. A little pricey, but that is to be expected. I was actually charged twice for a chocolate covered pretzel stick, but I let it go.My only true disappointment was that we went two days in a row, and both days they were "out" of chocolate covered peanut butter bars. Interestingly we went Sunday night at 8 PM and Monday at 11 AM. This tells me that their items are clearly not made fresh daily; on Monday there were few items left, in fact the exact same as Sunday night before. $45 later, A little disappointed. read more

Balboa Bars - We were walking down the street and saw the huge lines in front of the shops that sell bars out of their front windows. We were turning back and happened to notice a sign in front of Too Sweet. The sign claimed that their Balboa Bars that were the locals' favorites. We went in to this beautiful store, which has a very high-end look, scared as to what we might end up paying for a bar (which ended up only being 3.75 w/topping!). The woman who helped us was very friendly and told us why locals prefer these bars: the chocolate is a dark/milk blend... not that waxy DQ type stuff. The taste was AMAZING. I would come back in a heartbeat (and order the same vanilla ice cream with toffee topping). A couple suggestions for the store: 1) I almost walked past this place looking to beat the crowds in front of the other Balboa Bar sellers. Your signage almost got missed, and that would have been a shame for both you and I. 2) I didn't see the price for a balboa bar listed anywhere obvious, and this could turn people off from ordering from you (I was scared I was going to pay $6 a bar). 4.5 stars. Move over 'other stores' that sell Balboa Bars...there's a new king on the island. The bars are $3.25 just like the other places, but w/ toppings they're $3.75. The chocolate is what makes the difference (made of a dark and milk chocolate mix) & the bar is a little bit bigger than the rest. It's connected to a Tutti Frutti, but has more of a look of a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. There are peanut butter sandwiches, frozen bananas and other chocolate dipped concoctions. We were served by Radim who was one of the owners and he made us feel at home. He shared that originally he opened just the Tutti Frutti, but since her had to rent the entire space, he mine as well use it for another business. Good idea. With basically 3 options on the island, this is your best bet. read more

They use the real Hershey chocolate, not the cheap waxy stuff and very dress nuts and other sweets to roll on the Balboa Bars and frozen bananas. I have been coming here for years they have the best frozen bananas with the highest quality chocolate on Balboa Island. What's crazy is their ingredients are so much better but their price is still the same as the other place. Definitely the best frozen banana on the island. Best frozen banana I have ever had. They don't put wax in the chocolate like the other guys do down the street. They also have a variety of baked goods, chocolate items, and are connected to frozen yogurt options. Be sure to get the toffee crunch. I don't even like toffee but it totally works on this dessert treat. $3 Sweet frozen (but not too cold) coated in perfect chocolate and then finished with crunchy salted toffee. I had a dear friend staying in a hotel nearby and I wanted to get some chocolate to her. the catch is that I am in another state and was tracking down someone that could help me. I called around, even the hotel wouldn't accomodate my request. Radin, from Too Sweet was AMAZING from the start, they dont deliver yet his phenomal "whatever it takes" attitude took my order, paid by phone and is delivering some goodies to her hotel.
