I have used Case as a handyman for years and the results have generally been quite good. But a few years back I used them for an interior bathroom remodel. The bathroom looked good when it was done, but a few years later when I did a kitchen remodel with a different contractor, they had to do some work on the adjoining bathroom to accommodate new plumbing and electrical for the kitchen. That process uncovered all of the corners that were cut by Case in the bathroom remodel. Plumbing was not routed correctly (which explained why sometimes the shower drain would inexplicably back up), the electrical was not properly grounded, and there were a ton of sloppy fit and finish issues. So again I'd use Case for small things, but for an actual remodel, there are better options out there.

Competitive pricing, but sloppy work…read more I gave 3 stars for the price, even considering the sloppy work. I had to get a door replaced. The Building Company offered very competitive quote/pricing compared to other contractors. When it came down to the work, it was done sloppily. I always hear the term measure twice and drill once. Well, to the installer, it is more installed 2 to 3 times and don't bother measuring. The original measurement, done during the price quote and before the door was ordered, was not absolutely correct. The installer doesn't bother to check but just install the door. After installation, the door rub against the top jamb and need to be reinstalled. After the door is reinstalled, then come the key hole on the jamb for the bolt lock. He prep the hole for metal plates and drill the holes. When he is done, the door to jamb distance is not uniform. On hinge side vs door knob side were off. Again, rework.

We needed a major home renovation for our 68 year old home that was beyond our scope of expertise. The project included, but was not limited to: complete new HVAC system, complete electrical upgrade, complete guts and redo of kitchen, main bathroom (that included expanding into an existing closet area), and guest bath, strip-repair-refinish the hardwood floors (1500 sq ft), construction of a bar in an existing family room closet, repair damaged drywall due to house settling, paint throughout the house (including replace all baseboards), installation of canned lighting in various rooms, numerous new windows, and new attic insulation. For this project we interviewed four general contractors. Like many, we had heard horror stories of working with contractors and we did not want to have that experience. Of the contractors we interviewed two were limited in the scope of work they could do and would require us to hire subcontractors on our own and order our own appliances/cabinetry. A third contractor asked us if we wanted our work permitted and if so, we would have to apply for the permits ourselves. The fourth contractor interviewed was Sheryl Kanzaki of Advanced Home Improvement. She is the owner of the company. Sheryl was the only general contractor who was prepared to have a serious conversation with us. She brought a packet of information for us that included such things as examples of the work her company does and has done, certificates of insurance, referrals, and a listing of the services her company provides. This includes architectural review (which we needed due to foundation settling issues) and interior design services. She also took measurements and pictures of the entire house, exterior and interior). Sheryl got back to us within a few days with a detailed bid (the only contractor who did) and we met with her at her showroom. The showroom has not only a conference room and offices for her staff, but displays of tiles, flooring, kitchens, baths, showers, etc. And what is on display is just a sample of what her team can acquire. All of it is higher end, not what is found in big box stores. After going over the line-item details, we later met with her interior design team and they created different ideas for us to consider for the kitchen and the baths. This back-and-forth process with ideas, concepts, drawings & plans, and finally getting what we were looking for took a few weeks. Whenever we had a suggestion or concern the design team listened attentively to us and provided excellent advice. Because we had completely moved out of the house for the renovation the work crew was able to begin demolition and not have to worry about working around us. The kitchen and baths went first. While that was ongoing the electrical system was upgraded, and plumbing work began. It should be noted that Sheryl uses trusted partner companies for work not organic to her team. This included the electrical, the HVAC, and the hardwood floor work. The first part of the project, however, was the installation of a French Drain system around the perimeter of the house to mitigate structural movement due to rainwater collection. Sheryl had a structural architect look at the foundation to best determine what could be done to solve the problem of the house slightly shifting in wet years, thus causing drywall cracks. Because this work is outside of the scope of Sheryl's company, she sent out request for proposals to companies that do this work and provided us with one that could. Once the demo was complete the work began in earnest. For weeks her crews were in the house doing a variety of tasks. While this was going on we worked with the design team to select kitchen appliances, as well as cabinetry (kitchen and baths), and tile for the floors, all of which was ordered through the team. Once ordered, they managed the receipt, storage, and delivery of it all to the house. Throughout the project Sheryl was in regular contact with us. If we had a question on something that was being done, or if she had a question for us, communication was easy. There were no surprises during this project. We were able to regularly check in on the work and often talked with the crews working on the house. Everyone was very kind and would explain the work they were doing if we had any questions. At the end of this six-month renovation project we are thrilled with the results. The kitchen and baths are stunning. The floors are beautiful. The canned lighting, fresh paint and baseboards, and new windows really make the house look brand new. Our experience with this major home renovation was a positive and low stress event. We do not hesitate in recommending Advanced Home Improvement.

I caught Marc singing a Backstreet Boys song one day and had a good laugh with him. Ask him to sing for you.) The crew was timely in their arrivals and always left things tidy at the end of the day. That's not to say that everything in the process was smooth--there were puzzling miscommunications from time to time and minor details to fix toward the end. But, considering some horror stories I've heard from others, these small frustrations pale in comparison.

Hired these folks to handle some reconstruction work from two major leaks in both of our bathrooms…read more This team was extra patient as we were awaiting for inspections to complete which were stalled due to COVID (nothing related to Cools). After the team patiently waited 5 months, we finally got the inspections completed and the go ahead to start the work. Their scope of work was a major reconstruction of one of our bathrooms (drywall, texture, tile, baseboards, reinstall shower doors, painted, trim, the whole lot), and paint, trim and a light fixture in our guest bathroom. Not only did everything turn out amazing, but it was all completed in less than a week and a half!! Out of the numerous companies and teams we had to deal with during this reconstruction, the Cools team was by far the easiest and most responsive! Jason was awesome! He was always on top of it and remained transparent throughout the process (unheard of in the construction world!). I never had to chase him - ever! His team was just as great - Antonio and Gabriel were easy to work with, even when I was being a perfectionist. One other thing worth mentioning, since we were going through homeowners insurance, we had an uphill battle finding someone to do the work within the allotted budget. Cools was flexible and worked within the constraints of insurance. Jason even went to bat for us directly with the insurance company. So thankful! The work speaks for itself and we are beyond pleased. Cools Custom will be our new go-to guys for any of our home construction needs.

The design process was truly a collaborative one, with May proposing an initial design based on our prioritized wishlist of home features & incorporating our subsequent feedback until we arrived at a best-possible design given our constraints (setbacks, town restrictions). Their goal was to find the best way to realize our wishlist and they did a great job of realizing that goal. May was always available to discuss issues in real-time. Their build proposal was very detailed and clear about scope, prioritizing a well-vetted proposal, as accurate as possible with regards to budget, rather than hooking you in with an unrealistically low price. Based on our comfort level during the design process, it was an easy decision to continue with May for the build phase. The build phase was very well organized. Among the things that we liked the most about May was the comfort level in dealing with EVERYone on their team. Before we started the whole renovation process, we dreaded the prospect of having to push a contractor to keep things moving or having unforeseen issues blow up the budget. We didn't experience any of those issues with May. Bottom-line, are we happy with our finished home and would we choose May again? Our one story 1960's ranch style house in Saratoga, was in need of an upgrade. We updated an existing fireplace by refacing in stone and adding a gas insert. We added 110 sq. feet to our master suite by adding a double vanity, walk in closet, and walk in shower, new floors, windows, roof and stucco to the whole house. We added air conditioning, and updated the heating system. All in all, the entire house is like new! Greg May helped us finalize our decisions based on the vision we had for our house. He had great ideas, didn't push to do unnecessary work, preserved some previous remodeling we had done, and kept it simple and straightforward while accomplishing what we wanted to do with our house. He was always keeping budget in mind and suggested ways we could do more for less, and be more efficient with our project. He wasn't pushy and his personality was very calming in these very stressful beginning stages. In looking for a General Contractor we had specific qualities that were critical: Budgeting: Before we began, we worked through and estimated budget that we were able to tailor to what we wanted to do. Although we added more scope to the project once we started, we were never surprised in the middle of the project with additional costs to the original scope of our project. Many friends had said, "expect your budget to double by the end", and happily we ended within our scope. Project On Time: Although we had a few changes as the project progressed, we were back in our house within the six month time frame that was promised. We had an unusually wet winter during our project, and despite the weather, effort was made to move things along quickly. Eric was on top of keeping us on track to making decisions when it came to tile, flooring, fixtures, paint color, etc. to make sure that lead times would not hold up the project. Hard working staff and subcontractors: Our neighbors commented on how surprised they were that we had people working on our house almost every day. It was rare that there wasn't someone at the house doing something. It was even impressive when a variety of contractors would arrive at the same time to work side by side to save time on the project. Quality staff: All of the employees of May Construction as well as subcontractors were respectful and courteous. I would be on site most days, and they truly valued my opinion and answered all of the questions and concerns that I had. Our designer, Catherine, made some excellent suggestions for bathroom design, and tile/countertop selections. Attention to detail: May construction was sure to make sure that every detail was finished to our satisfaction. They were good about coming out even months later to fix any issue we had. With all new construction, you can count on a few problems, but May is quick to act to fix them. Communication: It was easy to contact our project manager Eric. He was always available via text, email or phone. Even on the weekends, he was willing to answer questions and solve issues that had come up. No matter the situation, Eric was always a listening ear and would reach out to the proper subcontractor to get the issues resolved. Going through a remodel can be very stressful and May always took a calm and measured approach to any situation. They were good at listening to concerns, making suggestions, and made the process as pleasant as possible. Overall, we are more than thrilled with the finished product. We have an amazing "new" home and have found new friends in May Construction. It is rare at the end of a project that people would not only value their contractor, but consider them friends.
