This is a long review, but the bottom line is this: if you are looking for an honest and conscientious general contractor who can deliver a project on time and on budget, look no further than Advanced Home Improvement. We needed a major home renovation for our 68 year old home that was beyond our scope of expertise. The project included, but was not limited to: complete new HVAC system, complete electrical upgrade, complete guts and redo of kitchen, main bathroom (that included expanding into an existing closet area), and guest bath, strip-repair-refinish the hardwood floors (1500 sq ft), construction of a bar in an existing family room closet, repair damaged drywall due to house settling, paint throughout the house (including replace all baseboards), installation of canned lighting in various rooms, numerous new windows, and new attic insulation. For this project we interviewed four general contractors. Like many, we had heard horror stories of working with contractors and we did not want to have that experience. Of the contractors we interviewed two were limited in the scope of work they could do and would require us to hire subcontractors on our own and order our own appliances/cabinetry. A third contractor asked us if we wanted our work permitted and if so, we would have to apply for the permits ourselves. The fourth contractor interviewed was Sheryl Kanzaki of Advanced Home Improvement. She is the owner of the company. Sheryl was the only general contractor who was prepared to have a serious conversation with us. She brought a packet of information for us that included such things as examples of the work her company does and has done, certificates of insurance, referrals, and a listing of the services her company provides. This includes architectural review (which we needed due to foundation settling issues) and interior design services. She also took measurements and pictures of the entire house, exterior and interior). Sheryl got back to us within a few days with a detailed bid (the only contractor who did) and we met with her at her showroom. The showroom has not only a conference room and offices for her staff, but displays of tiles, flooring, kitchens, baths, showers, etc. And what is on display is just a sample of what her team can acquire. All of it is higher end, not what is found in big box stores. After going over the line-item details, we later met with her interior design team and they created different ideas for us to consider for the kitchen and the baths. This back-and-forth process with ideas, concepts, drawings & plans, and finally getting what we were looking for took a few weeks. Whenever we had a suggestion or concern the design team listened attentively to us and provided excellent advice. Because we had completely moved out of the house for the renovation the work crew was able to begin demolition and not have to worry about working around us. The kitchen and baths went first. While that was ongoing the electrical system was upgraded, and plumbing work began. It should be noted that Sheryl uses trusted partner companies for work not organic to her team. This included the electrical, the HVAC, and the hardwood floor work. The first part of the project, however, was the installation of a French Drain system around the perimeter of the house to mitigate structural movement due to rainwater collection. Sheryl had a structural architect look at the foundation to best determine what could be done to solve the problem of the house slightly shifting in wet years, thus causing drywall cracks. Because this work is outside of the scope of Sheryl's company, she sent out request for proposals to companies that do this work and provided us with one that could. Once the demo was complete the work began in earnest. For weeks her crews were in the house doing a variety of tasks. While this was going on we worked with the design team to select kitchen appliances, as well as cabinetry (kitchen and baths), and tile for the floors, all of which was ordered through the team. Once ordered, they managed the receipt, storage, and delivery of it all to the house. Throughout the project Sheryl was in regular contact with us. If we had a question on something that was being done, or if she had a question for us, communication was easy. There were no surprises during this project. We were able to regularly check in on the work and often talked with the crews working on the house. Everyone was very kind and would explain the work they were doing if we had any questions. At the end of this six-month renovation project we are thrilled with the results. The kitchen and baths are stunning. The floors are beautiful. The canned lighting, fresh paint and baseboards, and new windows really make the house look brand new. Our experience with this major home renovation was a positive and low stress event. Overall, I am pleased with the kitchen remodel. They updated a tired '80s kitchen and made it beautiful and modern. Caroline took the lead on design and after a few iterations, we got on the same page. When it finally came time for demo and construction, I got to meet Ellen and Marc. Anytime I had a question, Ellen responded with alacrity and thoroughness. Marc and the rest of the crew were great craftsmen, professional, and polite. (Marc's also got a good sense of humor. I caught Marc singing a Backstreet Boys song one day and had a good laugh with him. Ask him to sing for you.) The crew was timely in their arrivals and always left things tidy at the end of the day. That's not to say that everything in the process was smooth--there were puzzling miscommunications from time to time and minor details to fix toward the end. Grace under pressure! It's been a weird couple of years, right? We had been talking about updating our bathrooms since we moved in 6 years ago, so when we finally decided to go for it... yeah, Covid. Despite everything, Cheryl and Ellen at Advanced Home Improvement made it as pleasant as it possibly could be, from the initial design to the final product... along the way dealing with everything from supply and labor disruptions, to us kicking them out for a week while WE recovered from illness. I was looking for a company to upgrade doors, baseboards, archways and drywall. Advanced Home Improvement was a great choice. Ellen came to my house and I described the work I wanted done. While she worked on the plan I checked ADVHI's references and they were all excellent. I was happy to sign the contract so the work could begin. ADVHI took care of everything. When the materials arrived they started working every morning at 8am. They put down a protector for my hardwood floors before they started work. Every evening they cleaned up my house before leaving for the day. The work went very smoothly I was very happy with their professionalism and the quality of their work. We hired ADHI to renovate our kitchen and first floor and we loved the results. From the first consultation, Sheryl and team outlined the process, timelines and how we would work together. We were a bit apprehensive hearing and reading the issues people have doing home renovation projects these days, but from the reviews in Yelp to those first meetings, our confidence grew. The process was fairly smooth, the design we brought to the table (one of us is an interior architect and former interior designer) was adapted and enhanced by Caroline, and the show room allowed us to play with the materials we wanted to incorporate as we balanced budget and look for our kitchen. Once the materials arrived and the construction started, the crew was always on time and professional and we were happily surprised to meet some of her workers who are masters at their craft. Antonio for example solved some issues we encountered creatively and with a design eye and overall everyone that worked here was fantastic, you can see how much he cares about meticulous work that does not cut any corners. We had just a couple of minor issues here and there that were resolved on the day with a quick call or text, which as fantastic and made us happy and comfortable knowing we were in good hands. 12 weeks for a brand new kitchen - WOW! From our first meetings with Sheryl, owner of Advanced Home Improvement to design my kitchen, to Alyssa, who helped with the selection of appliances, cabinets, and countertops, we could have not been more pleased. This is an experienced and knowledgeable group. ADHI employs their own construction crew complete with a foreman, electrician, painter, and plumbing experts. Thank you to Marc, Ryan, Antonio and the entire crew. A stellar group - arriving promptly when they say they will be there, and leaving the area tidy each day. Adept at solving the unexpected issues that do pop up. One day there was an electrical issue discovered. While their day should have ended at 4pm, we were so impressed and grateful that they stayed until the problem was resolved at 7-8 pm. Having never done a remodel before we were especially grateful for Ellen, the Project Manager, who coordinated everything from the work schedule for demo, floors, mudding, painting, obtained permits, the port-a-potty, and many things we never even knew about like clockwork. She is a good communicator and responds to questions in a timely manner. ADHI will not begin your remodel until all your selected appliances, cabinets, countertops are in. In our case this resulted in quite a lag time from our projected start date due the supply chain delays - a result of COVID. While I admit to being anxious to get started, it was worth the wait as once the remodel started, it moved along very quickly. The design process was straightforward and they gave us some great suggestions. It took several months for the cabinetry to arrive before construction could actually start, but once it did, everything was straightforward and hassle-free. The flooring was installed in multiple phases so that we didn't have to move out, and actually proceeded faster than expected. We were without a kitchen for a total of 6 weeks. Ellen, the project manager, was terrific at communicating with us about what to expect every step of the way, and Marc, the foreman, was extremely capable. Once again, Sheryl and her team have completed an outside door we needed installed. Our side door needed to be completely removed including framing, painting, door lock. We have had full bathrooms remodeled, new fireplace/entry tile, new front door with sidelights, (beautiful) and everytime each job is done to perfection. We waited 20 years to do a remodel! Such a mistake. We started the design process in late 2019 and were ready to go. Then COVID hit - Ugh!!!! The team at ADVHI were fantastic communicating when they could start, when we should plan appliance delivery, etc. The project was a complete kitchen remodel, new master bath shower, flooring throughout the house, and new lighting. Since we had no option to leave the house the entire crew worked around us and our family schedule. Every member of the crew acted as if this was their home. The level of detail and care was amazing. Not once did I see or hear..."that's good enough." When issues came up (we had some unknown water damage) they had solutions that didn't blow the budget and just added to the remodel. They could have easily said...oh thats not in the contract. Not a chance! The just handled it. I can't thank them enough, we refer them to EVERYONE and are having them come back this week to do some additional electrical work. Contracted to complete in 11 months, total completion time 20 months. Most if not all the commit dates for different phases were not met when promised and the work completed was barely satisfactory. Only commitment dates they cared about were payment deadlines. When they came in for minor repairs they had to paint a few things and I ended up with paint on my new sofa and new floors. Random dings and dents in counters and appliances that were supposed to be new. Several other issues which would make this review endless. We were promised priority as we had a large project, obviously that was not the case. We let the owner Sheryl know that those delays cut into our pocket book but she did not care. In the end we learned a painful lesson and would not recommend this contractor even for small projects. read more

A year ago Advanced Home Improvement began the process of gutting our outdated kitchen and replacing it with a beautiful, functional, welcoming kitchen that we love being in everyday. They also replaced the floors throughout our house. Sheryl and her team are professional, kind and just genuine humans. Each day that updated us on the progress, they were so PROMPT each morning and cleaned up each afternoon. From the prepping to every little detail, they were ORGANIZED and PROFESSIONAL. I have been meaning to renovate both my guest and master bathrooms in my loft for some time. Guest bathroom was a smaller scale job but master needed a major overhaul. I've had mixed experiences with previous contractors and have been in a long term procrastination mode. Coincidentally I found out that one of my colleagues had his entire kitchen renovated with ADVHI and he was very pleased with the work. He especially appreciated the fact that ADVHI was one stop shop with design service, materials and contractors under one roof and owner. I decided to give Sheryl a call and it was one of the best decisions I made. From the very first meeting with Sheryl, there is a personalized focus which is consistent thru out the entire project. I was interested in a modern look and Caroline captured what I wanted in her proposals with varying budget levels. Of course the options were functional, but were also stylish with attention to design aesthetics which I totally appreciate. ADVHI offers a wide range of materials, but you never feel overwhelmed. Best part is you don't need to walk aimlessly in a giant warehouse picking out materials. You just collaborate in the ADVHI studio and pick out your design and materials. As for the actual workmanship, it is truly excellent. Reid and crew were on time, respectful of my space and accommodated my busy schedule. Superlative company! I cannot say enough good things about Advanced Home Improvement. After avoiding home repairs for 20 years due to lack of funds, ADVI did a complete first floor remodel that produced the kitchen, living room and powder room of my dreams. They were able to engineer the impossible-opening up the wall between my 50 year old, 70's style kitchen and living room, all the while considering my budget. Workers showed up daily, at times promised, and completed the job on schedule. I was able to live in my home throughout the job. Their one-stop remodeling showroom simplified the whole process. Sheryl is honest and delightful to work with. She offers instant text communication, carefully attending to any problems that arose. Folks have no idea on contracting. Made me drive 10 miles to their office to look over their contract which could have easily been emailed. Price on contract was wrong, which the owner blamed on software. Took no responsibility herself for not reading the contract, before I got there. They had given me a 'Not to Exceed' price. Anyone who speaks English knows that a 'Not to Exceed' price means exactly that: Price can be less but not more. Yet, owner said final price could be more. And this is how they had done it for many years. Even this she blamed on her attorney clients who had never questioned her. Finally in end Jan she recommended I go elsewhere though I had started this process in early Dec 16. No apology for my losing almost 2 months. If the job had been contracted and been done poorly, I wonder who owner would have blamed. Next stop Finney on my side. read more

They came out to do extensive work on our home, we had 3 huge patio awnings put on... *They always arrived on time *They worked all day, with little or no breaks, left after 5. *They were professional at all times *Work was finished BEFORE date promised *Crew cleaned up while work was being done *Bill, Paul and Mitch were amazing, checking in and asking how we liked what was being constructed. AHI recently completed a total remodel of my powder room. They had to move the plumbing and venting, and put in a new marble floor. This wasn't an easy task. They did an excellent job. My kitchen was remodeled in April 2014. The team completed the project and I am extremely happy with the finished product. The kitchen was totally re-done with new cabinets, counters, appliances and LED ceiling lights. In addition a new window was installed and hardwood floors were refinished. They were very professional and addressed all my concerns in a timely manner. They project was completed within budget and finished on time. I have to complement Sheryl and her team for working within the confines of my work schedule. I had my kitchen done with Sheryl 3 years ago. It looks like new. they did such a fantastic job on it. Everything is still perfect. I had a problem with one of the doors, not the companies fault, my fault. I had put the toaster under the cabinet and when it got hot, it warped the cover on the doors. I noticed it and Sheryl kindly sent one of her workmen over to take the door off and take it to the cabinet maker who made the doors. She had someone here in 3 days and within 2 days the door was ready. And this is 3 years after I had had the kitchen done. She is very conscientious and ethical to the max. She just charged me what the cabinet maker charged. She didn't upcharge me or try to make money off this little accident of mine. She was professional and responsive.. even years later. Do use them. I dont know what happened here with "MIKE D" the review, but he doesn't know how to spell. The company was on time every day when it worked on my kitchen. It was done in a couple of months. .. We had a complete gut, counter top and wall to wall granite. They went with us to several places so we could look at granite, we went to some of them twice. She went to Lowes to pick lights, to other places to look at sinks. It was a lock step organized marched thru kitchen. From top to bottom perfect. I have worked with ADVHI for two major home remodels (kitchen, and 4 years later my master bedroom/bath). My husband and I are so happy with the results of both projects. We appreciate the constant communication and transparency Sheryl offered. We were made aware of any hiccups or hurdles in project completion - most of them due to delays from the city. There were delays in completion of my most recent project - but even with a newborn baby in the house - the men were very respectful, cognizant of noise and respected our privacy. We had these fools do our home remodel. I have never had more problems with anyone in my life. Do I need to say more. Mitch Alves is a goofball salesman who thinks e knows construction. He made so many mistakes it was a complete miracle that they even completed the project. Once it was completed is when the real problems began. We had to remove our entire bathroom because they installed it wrong. I got a hold of a list of other projects that they had done ( permits at city ) and contacted everyone on the list, everyone agrees that these fools should be put out of business. read more

I unfortunately had to do business with this horrible company recently. They are scam artists and do NOT like to pay their bills. The owner's have no sense of customer service and NO clue on how to do business. I would NEVER recommend this company to anybody......BEWARE!!!! read more
