As for the hair wash itself, I think the massage part could be a bit better. I preferred more pressure, but I also didn't speak up, so that's on me heh. I loathe to get my hair cut because I don't have a regular place to go to and I'd rather have too long hair than a bad haircut. But my hair has really gotten too long and needed to be cut. I tried my chances with Top Cuts. In the worst case, I can just go get it cut again. I had the guy trim 3 inches and do some light layers. He took a lot of care to do the cut. I couldn't tell the difference versus my other cuts. But then again, I'm not the most discerning with haircuts. It was $45 for the cut, no shampoo. read more

I left the shop in shock and was in tears about 2 blocks out. Red flag was when the man who did my hair refused to look at the reference photo I had prepared because he said knew how to cut side bangs. The moment he took my hair and just cut straight across, I knew I should have forced him to look at the photo. After the cut was made, I stopped him and told him that it didn't look right. He ignored my concerns saying that he wasn't done yet. Well no amount of blow drying can fix a bad cut. I told both him and the lady at the cash register that the cut was too short. He ignored my concerns and kept saying that it needed to be that short to not get into my eyes. I was charged $45 for the cut. I paid and left to cry outside. Yes, there was more that I should have done but I was too broken at the moment. To all out there, just don't go. read more

I have decided I will have my hair cut regularly at Top Cuts. I have been looking for someplace since before the pandemic. This establishment is competent, clean, and cheap. That satisfies my criteria. The other aspect, for those who need it, is they are proficient with Asian hair, bristly hair. That requires different technique than other hair. That is one of those aspects of racial identity which as I am using it here, for descriptive purposes, is non invidious. It generates consequences in the world though, because not everyone who can cut other types of hair have experience with how this behaves, especially when it is very short (and sticks straight out, which all hair would if short enough, but this is at least an order of magnitude more severe). So you need to find the right place. In San Francisco, that is not difficult. (I live in Flushing, Queens, where it also is easy enough; my spouse lives in San Francisco.) I once lived in Cleveland, for my first "real" job, and that was circa 1991, where and when it was impossible to find anyone specializing in Asian hair. I patronized a Black barbershop, where the proprietor was great, both because he could adapt and for his welcoming attitude, and I probably have never felt as much kinship to another community as then and there. The folks here are good at what they do. I mentioned "clean," and that actually is not something I have had an issue with at any Asian owned hair salon; hygiene is just one of those stereotypes of Asians/Chinese, used back in the day, as a euphemism and metaphor to rationalize exclusion and hatred. They can do what is not easy: ensure hair doesn't get all over you. I do not need to shower again once home. I also noted "cheap," which should be rendered positively, as a good value. There is one aspect of the visit to a hair stylist that is absent, and it is not a great loss: the chit chat. When I was in college, I was surprised when I started to get my hair cut not at home, and realized so many people engage in lengthy, intimate conversations while they are having their hair done. I suppose it makes sense. You are physically closer to the person performing the task than anyone with whom you are not intimate, except your dentist, and you can't very well talk to someone working on your teeth. During the pandemic, I was cutting my own hair. Contrary to what YouTubers claim, that cannot be done. Or I should frame it as I cannot do it, other than in the style of a buzz cut, and even then I had various mishaps (the guard falling off and gouging a reverse Mohawk, which meant going to just shy of shaving it all off; missing spots around the ears). I am willing to grant the people demonstrating it have skill, and perhaps that is at editing their videos. In any event, nobody except me liked that look. My wife assures me she and the dog both prefer that I, at 55 and without the male pattern baldness that is already afflicting my younger brothers, grow out my hair. In order to look presentable, then, I need to have my hair cut at least monthly, and probably more often than that. This is where I intend to go. read more

Most of the time I just walk in and wait about 15-20 minutes for Karen. She really takes her time with cutting your hair but can be kind of rough sometimes. There's also a bit of a language barrier, but if you have a few pictures of what you want, it shouldn't be too difficult for her! read more

For 15$ a haircut, this "dive bar" of a haircut place gives you the bang for the buck. I'd recommend this place. I used to go here a lot when living out in the sunset, and still find myself there to get a haircut (as most places in the city charge closer to $40, or more). While it is not always a consistent cut (depending on who does it), it definitely passes muster. For folks with simple/straight forward hair styles, this would be better for you. They will even help straighten out your beard, without charging extra. This is a nice touch, and usually leaves me tipping more. The staff is nice and polite, and tend to work pretty fast (even if there is a wait). The only hassle is that it is cash only, which is not uncommon in SF, but nonetheless frustrating. read more

Today I decided to get my hair trimmed before my weekend in Vegas. I went to Top Cuts before and I remember liking it so I came in for my second time. I have been trying to grow my hair out for a while now so its been quite a while since my last visit.... I called prior to coming, but apparently I called the wrong salon.. I saw a lady that I haven't seen before there confused when I told her that I had made an appointment. She was dying an older mans hair and I was just about to back out since I didn't remember her face using the man as an excuse that I didn't have time to wait.... When I asked her how much longer she told me just 5 min... In my head I was thinking..."I don't think she's the lady I went to... is she? I don't remember her having red hair.. should I go? I don't have time to wait for her." Then before I knew it she was done with the old man... I saw her just comb his hair over and snip some hair off the top.. thats it. Before I knew it my ass was on the seat. I had a picture to show her... I tried to make a conversation and she just smiled at me... on top of feeling nervous I realized that there was a language barrier... I felt my face getting hot... So instead of the somewhat complicated hair cut I wanted I asked for a trim and face layers...RIGHT when she took out her wet bottle and sprayed me I knew I had the WRONG LADY. I closed my eyes... BiG MISTAKE... I heard a RAZOR go through my hair... I've been RAZORED before and it RUINED my hair. I should've stopped her, but I didn't know how to stop it without coming out with a crap haircut. Sadly, I just sat there as I saw all my hair fall to the ground... There shouldn't have been that much hair on the ground... I'm sure she saw the sadness in my face... that I was unhappy with my haircut... so she says "your hair so thick you should want it to be thinner or permanently straighten..." I told her that I had bought the SEDU and that it straightens and protects my hair really well... It was as if she didn't hear me at all.. she kept on pushing me to buy the straightner at the store... thats when I knew that she didn't even understand me. I kept on telling her "oh no I have one already" and she just kept on going... at that point I just wanted to pay and leave... You know what's sad? I wanted to be so nice that I didn't say anything.. if I could go back in time I would've told her not to use the razor.... or just not come at all... My go-to hair salon! I've been here for both hair cuts and prom styling! My mom also loves this place. Karen is very efficient and structured. Mandy is more creative and flexible. Parking on Irving is a pain, so try to go to the resident areas ! They take appointments and it would probably be best just to ensure that you have a spot but I've walked in several times without appointments and they take me right away. I've waited a maximum 15 minutes. Love it! I came here for years and even got my bf to come here. My family also comes here for their haircuts. Pretty cheap haircut, but they do spend a lot of time and pay close attention to your hair and what you want. $12 for a mens hair cut, which is cheaper than a lot of places. They ask you how you want your hair, how you want your side burns, etc. Very attentive. There's 2 hair stylists: Mandy and Karen. Both are very good. I never left here hating my haircut. I went here on a Thursday and saw Karen for highlights, showed her a picture of me from 1 year ago and said can you do this, and she said she could. I drive 50min, pay $6 toll, and $4 a gallon gas to get my hair cut by her. People may say that's crazy, but that's better than getting a crappy hair cut that you have to live with for two weeks. Walked in at about 10:30am on a Wed., and got my hair cut right away. A pretty good haircut for a great price. I always want my hair cut more punky than it turns out, and this place was no different. Ended up looking rather conventional, but MUCH better than when I came in, and, I have to say, much better than my last $60 hair cut. What was Great about the place is that she (Karen) had no problem giving me a men's cut, and showed me the book to look through... no comments about making me look pretty with something else. Also, she didn't fill up the time with small talk, so I could just relax, and she was really fast. I'd recommend the place, and I'll probably return for my next cut. The first time here I got a haircut and left a happy customer. The second time I got a cut and color and now it's my salon of choice! Karen was my stylist and she did a thorough job of helping me choose a color. The rest of the process was standard procedure (standout was the hair wash and massage...pure bliss..). Then she dried my hair, straightened with an iron (which I thought was out of the ordinary) and dry-cut. Total was $55 for color and $10 for cut. She actually cuts the top of my hair using her hands instead of just swiping the razor across the top of my head like a lot of haircutters do. When she was ready to retire, she sold it Mandy and Karen who apparently worked together at another salon just down Irving and decided to start something of their own. Mandy and Karen taking care of me and my family now for about 5 years! I live in Marin and still go to them to get my haircut when I'm in the city. They are that good!
