I hate to do this, but damn, Top Deck Restaurant at the Cal Neva, you need some serious help. We went there last night for dinner as our original choice, Kwok's, is currently doing take out only. With fond memories of the Neva's Steak and Pasta House (sadly now closed), we thought just maybe some of what had made that place special had somehow transferred over to the Top Deck. Well, I'm sorry to say that there's no way I could ever be convinced to go back there unless it was 2am, I was hungry, broke and beyond care. We ordered the rib eye steak (rare) and the 20oz prime rib (again, rare) and a couple of drinks. We received a nice salad that was fresh with tasty croutons, a good start. However, the soup of the day (clam chowder) was salty as all get out. Next came the entrees (we didn't get our drinks until the very end of our meal), and they were both massive disappointments. The wife's rib eye (~$14 or so) had the texture and color of old shoe leather, but without any of leathers' charms. Thin and overcooked, it got a couple trial bites and was pushed aside. My prime rib ($21), served rare as ordered, was bland and flavorless. I had to absolutely saturate it with au jus, horseradish and pepper to give it any taste at all. It came with a baked potato served with butter and sour cream and some sad little veggies that really deserved better than the fate that befell them last night. Oh, and it's the Cal Neva, so you gotta play a little Keno with your meal...right? Nope, don't do it! I played four games at $5 a pop (20 spot), and the super nice, sweet lady who collected my money and who was *supposed* to pay us when we won? Complete failure. She walked up and down our row apologizing to every single table...EVERY SINGLE TIME SHE CAME BY...for getting cards, change and payouts wrong. She told us we lost when she owed us $7.50, and then she lost my ticket when she owed us $12.50. When I pointed out that the lost ticket consisted of the same numbers we played in the previous three contests (a $10 win plus the $2.50 she owed us from the last card), she went and got $7.50 out of her purse with a profound apology. Stiffed me $5.00. Which is what I would have tipped her anyway, so I didn't bother to complain. Until now that is. Anyway, we finally got our drinks when our bill came and we hightailed it out of there. The cashier helpfully pointed out that we were undercharged $9.00, which was promptly tacked on to the bill and we left. What a joy! read more

It's been a few years since I've been to Reno, but really glad Top Deck survived the pandemic. You won't find a better priced menu in the downtown area. Try the pork chop and eggs for breakfast, you won't be disappointed. Generous serving for $10. For lunch and dinner try the prime rib or steak and lobster tail, very affordable. They have a Keno runner that will take your bets while you eat and screens to show the drawings. There was no wait time to be seated and the service was quick both times I went. read more

Ordered the $15.99 prime rib and lobster with potato salad. The prime rib felt like it was already precut and tasted dried out. The au jus sauce made it better. The lobster was just cooked/steamed. The potato salad was ok. Service was fast and friendly. It made me feel like they wanted me to eat and leave in less than 10minutes which I dont mind. Yes you have to navigate thru a smokey casino to get to the restaurant. That is true in most cases when it comes to casinos. They want you to gamble while you are there. It looks like a regular diner or greasy spoon. But! The Service was just fine and the price of the food is crazy affordable. It's not a fancy steak house. But my steak and lobster tail that cost me 12.99 was great. Not a huge steak and tail but great deal. Steak cooked how I asked. All 4 of us had a great meal for less than $60. And 2 of us had steak and lobster. Wife had eggs Benedict and daughter had chicken fried steak and eggs. Cant beat this deal. read more

This place was recommended to us from a family friend because of the affordable prices. Upon entering Cal Neva we saw red footprints that led to Top Deck, that was super helpful because we had no idea where to go. The host and staff were super friendly and helpful. We came as a big party of 16, they couldn't sit us all together so we had to take up 4 tables -it was all good. (Heads up if you come as a big party) They also asked us if we want to split the bill by 4, 2, or put in 1 tab. Once we ordered, I had to try the prime rib and lobster dinner special. The meal was overall alright. The middle part of the prime rib was bland and the mashed potatoes had an aftertaste. All in all, it wasn't bad nor was it good. I ordered the beef manhatten and chicken noodle soup, and my husband got the steak and lobster. Think small town diner food and ambience. The manhatten was really good with a heaping helping of mashed potatoes. The chicken noodle soup was some of the best I have had. The lobster was on the smaller side, but well cooked. The steak was cooked as requested and was tender. Strawberry shortcake for dessert hit the spot. All in all, I would definitely go back. Was I a little scared as I made my way to this restaurant? Yes. Would I do it again? Yes. Came for the cheap lobster and prime rib. You get what you pay for, but it was satisfying. Glass of wine filled to the rim and desserts that were bulk ordered. The service is a little odd, only order from your waitress, don't wave down anyone else. Pay at the counter out front on your way out. I don't know how to play keno but it made me want to learn? Ambiance is exactly what you would expect from a dusty casino with elevators from the 70's. The place was just OK if that. It had a sketchy feel to it. The server claimed to be her first day (possibly to inspire a higher tip). The manager seemed a little overbearing on her. The portion of food was good but nothing spectacular. If given the opportunity, I would probably choose another restaurant. read more

What can I say about "Top Deck"... It is the most deliciously cheap restaurant in Reno located at the Cal Neva Casino and free parking. Is been 3 years we been going there ever since my boss introduced me to this restaurant. The food is one Old Classic American old school diner. The service and customer service is great because if you coffee or water is low they are super attentive which is great. But the cost is low, where can you get 3 pancakes with 3 eggs, a sausage (any sides) and hash brown for $11.95. Not even Denis can go that low. I totally recommend this if you're broke or you're down at your luck from all the bets you lost from the casino. read more

what's not to recommend here? If you want to eat on a budget and get that great café breakfast or lunch or dinner menu then this is the place it's located downtown right next to the bigger casinos, so just take a walk over. They always have great specials and their prices are low so you can keep that money for gambling right. I had a great experience there. We have seen the signs downtown for the food specials at Cal Neva many times. We decided to try it out. Walking through the casino is a bit like walking back into time. After my wife doubled her money at a slot machine we found the Top Deck Restaurant about noon on a Sunday The place was packed but we were quickly seated and provided menus. We looked through the menu and there are lots of inexpensive options. We chose the club sandwich with fries and the Philly cheese steak sandwich with fries. Our food was delivered in a timely fashion and looked really good. Everything tasted pretty good too. We were pleasantly surprised. read more

Oh.. Reno. How I love what thee, and all you have to offer. I mean who doesn't like getting drunk and going for cheap eats, right? Thank goodness for Top Deck Located in the Cal Neva Hotel & Casino. Since, I enjoy staying downtown Reno, there's always something to do and eat...lol! I remember when Top Deck used to be open 24 hrs a day, but no more...sigh :( If I'm recalled it open 24hrs Friday & Saturday's only. Each & every time come come here, I always have to order the $5.99 for a pretty decent "Prime Rib" dinner. If you aren't into meat they make a mean salad too, you can even have you salad customized to your specifications, just ask your waiter/waitress. The service is sometime hit & miss as wait as the wait service is concerned. I've had really friendly servers and I've had service, where the server can be down right rude for no reason. I'm a big girl, I deal with each situation accordingly. The food is good not the best, but for the price and portions you can't go wrong and who doesn't like a $1.50 16oz can of Budweiser or Bud Light? They sell many food items from Breakfast, Lunch and dinner and the desserts are pretty good too! Heck, why not play a little Keno, while you wait for your meal. I have to rate Top Deck 3 stars because during the weekday the close between 10pm & 11pm at least stay open until midnight. Some of us like to tip in and sober up around that time. I've been coming here for years but always checking in and reviewing CalNeva, but the Top Deck Restaurant is the only reason I stop in. I have loved it since the first time I ever ate here!! The grilled cheese on Texas toast is the best I've ever had from a restaurant. That was my go to for awhile and I got my boyfriend hooked on them too. He loves the steak & lobster special and we've also gotten a variety of breakfast dishes here that we also love. There's tons of booths to sit in and the service has (almost) always been great. We've had a couple of times where everything was moving incredibly slow but we've also been in enough to know that is not the usual for them. Food is great for what you pay. I personally like the vibe. Service is generally pretty friendly and it's a laid back place to eat and hang for awhile. I've been coming back again and again and it's a must for me to eat at whenever I am back in Reno! read more

As we arrived in town at 2:30 a.m., hungry from the drive, we found Top Deck to be open and first thing you see is a sign for Steak 'n eggs $4.99. The more you look into the deals get better and better. I got the $9.99 steak 'n lobster. The portions were not that big, but big enough to satisfy hunger at 3 a.m. The lobster was pretty tastey, was nicely cooked. The steak was a liitle to char but still good all together. If you've never been, the place can look quite confusing. Don't let signs fool you, no matter what you read, you need to put your name down first to get seated. The place has that old skool brown booth look. You may think you see lots of waiters, waitress, but you get one and only one waitress will help you...and only her. Will I come back...yes. ere every day of our Reno trip, including twice yesterday! I love the food, employees, and atmosphere. I wish I could have got everyone's names, but due to my vision issues, I could not. On this morning's receipt Elizabeth's was listed as the server and she was awesome! I do have to say the only name I got was Steve. He was amazing. He was right to us immediately and had the drinks back right away. He was always smiling and really made the overall experience pleasant. One thing that I would love someone to mention to all of the staff, every single person treated me equal. One thing they did not know is in September I was a normal walking talking person and i contracted menengitis. I was in the hospital for three months and in a vent. I lost my motor skills and ability to walk and talk. I'm relearning these things slowly. This was my first trip as a newly disabled person and it was scary. To everyone on the street I was just a fat lady in a power chair, not a lady who survived a catastrophic illness whose medicine helped make me fat lol. Every staff at top deck and cal-neva took the time to let me try to talk and was very patient with me. I never felt like a burden for trying to speak, they treated me like every other person and I want them to know how much better they made my trip! read more

I would highly NOT suggest this restaurant because every single employee that we had contact with was rude! the food didn't have no flavor to it and I felt uncomfortable eating in this restaurant because they would just stand around the restaurant very close to people who were eating and watch everybody. It's not a bad place. When we arrive it was partial flood issues. We stood there for about 10 min before someone realized we were there so we were escorted to another entrance. As I was driving into Reno, I saw a couple of advertisements for Steak & Lobster for $9.99 at this restaurant. Unfortunately when I got there, around noon time, this special wasn't being served. It didn't start until 4pm. Ok, so I decide to just order something else. I go for a chicken caesar salad wrap that comes with a side of potato salad or fries. I opt for the potato salad becaus I know I want to try a few onion rings. The waitress brings my food and I ask for ketchup. It's on a huge table and because I'm dining alone, I have to get up to retrieve it when she was already standing on the side where the ketchup is. That's not a big enough deal to ruiin my meal. I go for the potato salad. Extremely bland. Salt and pepper didn't help much. The onion rings and wrap were ok though. After I had my plate for about 5 minutes, the server brought my ticket, placed it down on the table and said, "No Rush". She was never to be seen again UNTIL I located her and asked for a to-go box.
