This place has changed so much for the worse. We had steak and lobster, well the lobster was a very small 4oz and prime rib thin as paper. Only comes with fries, unless you pay for a different starch. Our service, or should I say lack of, we were greeted by a grumpy young guy, then as soon as seated a nice older gentleman got our drink orders. Then came our server, Porsha. She came by quickly and when asked about specials mumbled fast and walked away. She had to get to the back room where she was eating. During our whole visit she did NOTHING but eat. Our water was refilled by the gentleman. When our order came up she came out from eating and grabbed one plate, having another employee carry the second one? Our food was cold, and we never saw her again until she dropped our check. Do you think she said anything or cleared our plates, hahaha... way beyond her service. My husband and I frequent this place every time we come up for a couple weeks and we love it. We love their prime rib. We love their waffles. It's just a good place. But tonight we arrived and to only be turned away and as soon as I talk to the one gal, I asked them we're just here for the prime rib. Can we just be seated so she goes and ask the manager Melissa is that her name? So we got in we got to sit down no big deal. There was a girl in training with her name is Sarah she does a great job great job and so we get our meal. Everything's good taste fine and I had let the staff know that we didn't appreciate the Manager and all of her antics! She's turning away customers while we were sitting there at least 20 people were turned away that's revenue that is revenue because she couldn't stop running her mouth and blabbing to everybody instead of waiting on tables like she should she should lead by example not by what she did because your training a Waitress and she sees you just blabbing your mouth to people and not helping anybody not taking care of anybody. Taking the tips or whatever off the tables, the manager and then just go in about her day and having her little friends come in so she can chitchat it up with them instead of waiting up on customers.! We are not from here. It is a great place to come when we do eat at top deck. This evening, my wife and I decided to come to top deck. We love the place. It's delicious. We've been coming here forever. Our waitress was excellent. Her name is Sarah and she's good. She served us and she was very attentive. We also wanted to give a shout out to the gentleman, Indian gentleman who's been there for almost 25 years. He is amazing. He is awesome. So we arrived only to be turned away almost the manager is telling everybody that we're only taking takeout orders. To us we were disappointed because we drove from Northern California all the way to here and this is one of our stops so we asked again if we could sit down and have some prime rib. It was granted which was nice. The thing I didn't appreciate is the manager I believe her name is Melissa. She is not a leader. She does not have leadership skills. What I saw tonight was really bad. She wanted to close the place because she didn't have proper staff, but yet there were three cooks in the kitchen . There were four people that could deliver food and it was not busy at all and she just sat around with her little Homies and wanted to chitchat with everybody and Sarah's running around tending to customers Turning away, customers is revenue . Yes I understand you could get it in a form of takeout. I get that but it not allowing people to sit down because you the manager Melissa wants to go around chitchatting with all her friends and not help people you are not a team player. This is still the go to place for prime rib special. 6 ounces of prime rib, french fries or mashed potatoes and gravy, and a soup or a salad. All for just $7.99. We have been doing the special here for about 15 years. The price has gone up since Covid started, however it still fills my 17-year-old boys up. Still plenty of food. Quite a few of the workers remember us and greet us every time we come in. They always make us feel welcome. Today we had a new waitress taking care of us. Her name was Shantel. She was very happy and cheerful. Wonderful personality and very friendly. What we ordered: 3x prime rib special ($7.99) Steak and lobster ($12.99) Steak and shrimp ($8.99) 5 dinner salads The salads were included and were very nice. I asked for extra tomatoes and the dressing on the side. Shantel was very accommodating. Dinner was pert and service also, can't ask for better. I am doing an update on this review as it has been over 10 years since I have been here. The good news is the prices have not changed much and pretty cheap to eat and my wife and I used our comps for this place. The place is more lighter and brighter instead of dark and gloomy. Prices range $7 to $15 dollar a meal depending on what you are planning to get. Unfortunately, I could not get the bad stuff because I forgot my gout medication at home. The portions are very good and decent. We ordered both the wraps. I ordered the Cal Neva wrap for $10 dollars and my wife got the Chicken Caesar Wrap spinach. They did not ask us if we wanted potato salad or fries. Anyways I remember I could not eat fries because that is a trigger for my gout. We asked the waitress for potato salad and she said she thought we ordered the fries. Anyways they gave us the potato salad with no cost which was great. Overall, I would say it was not too bad. I would come back, but the service can use some work though as they forgot to give us some water after they asked us if we wanted more. But I would give it a 4.5 stars. read more

Having just arrived in Reno, I needed a quick beer and some lunch. I Yelped the area for cheap food and the Top Deck at the CalNeva came up. I walked about 3 blocks to get there and through the smelly VERY old casino up several escalators, around hidden corners, up some stairs, around more corners and finally found the Top Deck. For some reason, I thought it would be outside or have a view based on the name. Anyways, this place is everything it should be, from the staff, old booths, patrons, and the food. It is definitely old school but in a charming way. Everyone I dealt with was super nice and checked up on me often. I ordered the special "Tuna Melt with fries" (only $5.00!) and a Coors Light (big can, maybe 16 oz only $2.50). This meal also came with soup or salad. I had the salad. What a great deal! My tuna melt was toasted nicely, lots of tuna and cheese oozy goodness. Fries were hot and average type. Beer was cold and salad good. There were a lot of other options I considered from their menu from breakfast items to steak & eggs or lobster to the Hangover Special (Intriguing - I almost got this one). This is a diner located conveniently inside a casino. We put our name on the list and were seated 20 mins after. For the price, this place cannot be beat. So I am bouncing from my review on Siris, we came here fondinner last week, it wasn't busy but the server seemed very overwhelmed. My kid got pancakes and I got the prime rib. We went here early on Friday evening. The prime rib was weird and didn't taste like prime rib and either did the ribeye. There was no one there and I think because things didn't turn around we had what tasted like boiled meat. In my recent visit, I decided to order the Prime Rib dinner with Macaroni & Cheese, vegetables, and a side salad. The pasta was a little dry but my waitress gave me butter to moisten it. The prime rib was decent. It could've used a little more seasoning, though. It was good dipped in the Au Jus Sauce. The vegetables were tolerable as well but I wish Top Deck could've offered more options like broccoli or spinach. Finally, the salad was fresh and tasty. However, it could've been plated on a bigger plate. The lettuce kept on falling to the side. I can say that my waitress was so hilarious, friendly, and hospitable. She took care of us pretty well! I have been to this restaurant oh so many times over the years. It has never been great but there used to be a certain charm to showing up a casino diner at 3am and it be totally packed with drunk tourists, casino industry people and the occasional band or when the fair was in town, carnies. The food was super cheap and greasy with infinite coffee refills from the generally busy but pleasant servers. The last time I went here a couple weeks ago the atmosphere was tense as they were short staffed and even though most of the dozens of tables were empty, the bussers and severs were doing the jobs of several people with the cooks looking bored and heads down looking at their phones. My own server did not show up for a long time, maybe 15 min and a busser finally got my drink order before I saw her. Maybe they should recruit the many uniformed security that were hanging out and chatting with tables to help? I got the French dip with some fries and I am not sure where they got the beef that they served me or how long it was sitting around for but it was grey in color. I was both impressed and disgusted at the same time but hey, at least the fries were crispy! So I ended up handing the busser a cash tip and paid my bill and that, dear readers, will be the last time I step foot in Top Deck. Oh how the mighty have fallen. read more

I took a chance on this place as there were some good reviews. I went with the bacon and cheese omelette. The omelette was dry and had bacon pieces clumped together in several areas. Two slices of American cheese were on top of the omelette, not folded inside. I expected shredded cheese to be folded in the omelette. The cheese slices were not melted and peeled off easily. The one piece of toast was room temperature and had no butter on it. There was a container of a butter-like condiment that was not appetizing. There were a few bites of the hash browns that were crispy and tasty, but the rest needed cooked more. My husband had the egg/bacon/hash browns/toast breakfast. Same experience with the hash browns and toast. His bacon was about half-cooked. The eggs were okay, but were not what he requested - they were at best over-easy and he ordered over-medium. The atmosphere was old Las Vegas which I enjoyed. It appeared to be clean and the staff was friendly. Prices were reasonable had the meal been properly prepared ($29 includes one water and one coffee). I don't expect to be back due to the food quality. read more

This was our first stop after landing in Reno. Heard about cheap eats and we had to try. I would say this is definitely better than Denny's. It's located inside a casino with lots of free parking. Lots of options to choose from. Steak and shrimp for under $15. Unlimited coffee and soda, Keno service, and best of all, friendly staff members always checking in on you to make sure you have everything you need. I used to live this place but my last experience was pretty meh. I waited forever for a table but no one came and the waiters just kinda saw me waiting and shrugged their shoulders. You have to pay first now because people steal food, so that is understandable but too bad as you can change your order easily. The food was not as I remembered. The steak was dry and the seafood likewise dry and rubbery. The prices seamed to have almost doubled. My mashed potatoes were pretty dry and rough, it wasn't an enjoyable meal. Also, i now they charge you $1.50 to take out, which I don't understand as less resources are used. Ill try again as it was so bad I can't believe this was normal. We decided to come here again after coming back to Reno just because you really can't beat their deals. The food isn't amazing but you can't get steak and lobster cheap anywhere else than here. It is very family oriented, with lots a booth seating. Honestly though, their food is a hit or miss majority of the time. We've gotten well-done steak when we ordered medium rare, burnt lobsters, but we've also had decently juicy steak and buttery lobster, so it really depends. However, if you have a complaint, the waiters and waitresses in my experience have been nice and understanding about it and our orders have been fixed without issues. I hate to do this, but damn, Top Deck Restaurant at the Cal Neva, you need some serious help. We went there last night for dinner as our original choice, Kwok's, is currently doing take out only. With fond memories of the Neva's Steak and Pasta House (sadly now closed), we thought just maybe some of what had made that place special had somehow transferred over to the Top Deck. Well, I'm sorry to say that there's no way I could ever be convinced to go back there unless it was 2am, I was hungry, broke and beyond care. We ordered the rib eye steak (rare) and the 20oz prime rib (again, rare) and a couple of drinks. We received a nice salad that was fresh with tasty croutons, a good start. However, the soup of the day (clam chowder) was salty as all get out. Next came the entrees (we didn't get our drinks until the very end of our meal), and they were both massive disappointments. The wife's rib eye (~$14 or so) had the texture and color of old shoe leather, but without any of leathers' charms. Thin and overcooked, it got a couple trial bites and was pushed aside. My prime rib ($21), served rare as ordered, was bland and flavorless. I had to absolutely saturate it with au jus, horseradish and pepper to give it any taste at all. It came with a baked potato served with butter and sour cream and some sad little veggies that really deserved better than the fate that befell them last night. Oh, and it's the Cal Neva, so you gotta play a little Keno with your meal...right? Nope, don't do it! I played four games at $5 a pop (20 spot), and the super nice, sweet lady who collected my money and who was *supposed* to pay us when we won? Complete failure. She walked up and down our row apologizing to every single table...EVERY SINGLE TIME SHE CAME BY...for getting cards, change and payouts wrong. She told us we lost when she owed us $7.50, and then she lost my ticket when she owed us $12.50. When I pointed out that the lost ticket consisted of the same numbers we played in the previous three contests (a $10 win plus the $2.50 she owed us from the last card), she went and got $7.50 out of her purse with a profound apology. Stiffed me $5.00. Which is what I would have tipped her anyway, so I didn't bother to complain. Until now that is. Anyway, we finally got our drinks when our bill came and we hightailed it out of there. The cashier helpfully pointed out that we were undercharged $9.00, which was promptly tacked on to the bill and we left. What a joy! read more

I ordered the beef manhatten and chicken noodle soup, and my husband got the steak and lobster. Think small town diner food and ambience. The manhatten was really good with a heaping helping of mashed potatoes. The chicken noodle soup was some of the best I have had. The lobster was on the smaller side, but well cooked. The steak was cooked as requested and was tender. Strawberry shortcake for dessert hit the spot. All in all, I would definitely go back.
