I ordered takeout by calling in. It did take 3 times calling in around 1130am to place a order. I almost gave up and planned to drive over and order in person. Luckily the owner called me back and I was able to place my order over the phone. I ordered the chicken katsu regular plate and one spam musubi and one bbq chicken musubi. It was ready in 15 minutes as she stated on the phone and the total was $16.50 (before tip). The chicken katsu was the perfect ratio of breading and chicken. You can see the chicken and the thin breading. Although it was thin, it was still very crunchy. The regular box comes with three pieces cut in strips with cabbage under it. On the side it has 2 scoops of rice and 1 scoop of mac salad. The Mac salad was also tasty, it wasn't like the ones you get at the deli thank goodness. It wasn't covered in Mayo and you can tell it's freshly made. The katsu sauce was different in a good way. It was more liquid like more it had all the flavors that you would expect from the sauce. Other places, the katsu sauce is thick and heavy. This katsu sauce was light and easy for dipping. The spam musubi was okay.. at $2.49 for each piece, it probably wasn't worth it. I felt like there wasn't enough sauce on it but at least it was tightly wrapped and it didn't fall apart. The bbq chicken musubi was so good! Although it fell apart while I was eating it, the chicken piece was huge and I'd recommend this musubi if you were to choose just one. Stop by if you're in pasadena to a local owned Hawaiian/ Indonesian spot! I was gifted a certificate to here so had to try it out. I honestly still prefer Ono's because the sauces there really make the meal for me. But I would come back just for their fried chicken! They do give you more portion wise here and the food overall is good. The chicken katsu is thicker cut (not just breading compared to L&L & Ono's) and you can sub their Mac salad for free instead of rice. The cabbage underneath the meats was more like shredded cabbage pieces. The crab Rangoons were fully stuffed and yummy. I didn't eat the masubi but my fiancé didn't have any complaints. The real winner was the fried chicken- I believe 6 pieces for 9.99. Their special sauce was great. They do charge 25 cents for extra sauce each. When I first enrolled in Pasadena City College, I quickly stumbled upon this Indonesian/Hawaian restaurant. I grew up in Indonesia and this place dishes, like the indonesian fried rice and the crispy fried chicken, reminds me of my hometown. After going back and forth couples of times, these are some of my favorite dishes: - Chicken Katsu (ask for the katsu sauce!) - The musubi ( BBQ chicken & Spam) - Indonesian fried rice ( must try item, ask for spicy if you can handle the heat/ spicy food) - Indonesian Fried Egg noodle - The Bee-Hoon/Vermicelli noodle The flavors were excellent and it comes with a big portion too. The restaurant neighborhood seems a bit odd, but don't let it fool you. Plenty of parking space are available. I feel like this is a secret gem. And, oh, the owner is pretty nice and super friendly. Some of the best Hawaiian food around the SGV! The chicken katsu musubi immediately caught my eye because I haven't seen it anywhere else before. This turned out to be delicious and equally as good as spam musubi. The chicken katsu was cooked to the perfect level of crispiness. I went a little overboard ordering for a family a four, but perfect for leftovers. We ordered the Family Pack ($35.99) with three choice of meat: Chicken Katsu, Kalua Pork with Cabbage, and BBQ Beef (+$3). This deal also includes 6 scoops of rice and 6 scoops of macaroni salad. First of all, the BBQ beef was a favorite. It was like the short ribs but without bone, so that leaves all the best parts. The beef was tender to the bite and cooked to perfection. Definitely worth the extra $3! The chicken katsu is also delicious but pretty standard. I thought the kalua pork was a bit bland, but I've never been the biggest fan of kalua pork in general. The restaurant is located in a strip mall with plenty of parking and all the staff were taking proper safety precautions for Covid. However, I don't think the food quite lives up to the hype. Food: I tried the loco Moco, fish salad, kalua pork, and combination plate. Out of the 4, the combination plate (barbeque chicken, barbeque beef, short rib) was my favorite since all the meats were tender and the flavorful. The loco Moco was average and the kalua pork was frankly pretty dry. I don't recommend the fish salad as the portion was pretty small compared to other items and seasoning was a bit lacking. Overall the food was good was not amazing. Service: The lady working at the restaurant was very kind both on the phone and in person. Food was ready upon estimated pickup time. Ambiance: Really tiny restaurant so most people probably get takeout rather than dining in. Price: Very affordable for the quantity of food you receive (every thing is around $10). On our first visit, rather than basing our order off of what other Yelpers had picked, we ordered what we were craving: spam musubi ($2.15 - one piece), regular size chicken katsu ($9.29), and the regular size loco moco with a sunny side up egg ($9.49). There was a 50 cents charge for rice in the katsu and loco moco. My favorite of that order was the chicken katsu. BF's was the same. The breading was just perfect and the chicken was lean. On our second visit, we decided to heed the advice of other Yelpers and order the 6 piece crispy fried chicken, as well as the Kalua pork we were craving. OMG, the Kalua pork was so good, but OMG, the chicken was EVEN BETTER!! It was THAT GOOD. The 6 pieces did not feel enough! BF does not normally eat the skin of fried chicken. The only times he's done so was at 1) Club 33 (Disneyland), 2) Plaza Inn (Disneyland), and 3) Kyochon (Seoul, Korea). Now, he can add Top Restaurant to that list. The fried skin didn't taste oily or greasy at all! Of course, it tasted great with the meat, but it was also great by itself. If everything else was lackluster (which it wasn't), the crispy fried chicken could've easily saved the meal. Ordering in advance has been easy so far. We'd call and then pick up 15-20 minutes later. The plaza does have limited parking, but so far it hasn't filled up when we came by to get the food. They take credit card (no American Express) and have a minimum, but if you order two items, you easily pass that minimum amount. Was craving some Hawaiian barbeque so I decided to hit up Top Restaurant because the reviews seemed really solid. Parking was a breeze, if you don't find a spot the first time around, just loop back and you'll find another. The place itself doesn't look glamorous but not to worry, the food is where all the glamour is at!! I believe it's cash only for totals less than $10, so be prepared. The menu is straightforward, each item lists what it contains and the portions are HUGE. Omg. No joke, I could split my order (#14) into 3 meals. The amount of rice is perfect, how all the meats are marinated and cooked are great. The only thing I would change is adding more short ribs in #14 since it was just one slab and honestly not enough. I think in terms of most to least amount of meat, it was chicken, bbq beef chunks, and then short ribs. Maybe I'll just order a plate of only the short ribs and bbq beef next time. We pulled into the parking lot, and the pictures did not lie. It is a hole in the wall in a small strip mall next to someplace called the "Bowl Market", which, despite its name, does not seem to specialize in bowls at all but rather liquor as made clear by the big LIQUOR sign that dwarfs the Top Restaurant sign to its right. I was wondering if maybe Top were run by expert coders who had somehow gamed the food review platforms. Fortunately, that was not the case. I think people that enjoy food love places like this. A family owned hole in the wall that just makes great food. We ordered 5 spam musubis, Indonesian fried rice and Indonesian crispy fried chicken for the 3 of us. They were all so tasty! The musubi brought back wonderful memories of our honeymoon in Maui many years ago. Don't forget to lather on the sauce that comes on the side with the fried chicken. It makes the dish. And the fried rice is just a plate of sweet and umami deliciousness. I only wish they gave packets of sriracha because I am sure that would make the fried rice even better. This place is fascinating - it's small, unassuming, VERY casual. They serve Hawaiian food...but they also serve Indonesian food. That's a pretty unique combination. My parents are from Indonesia so that's really what drew me here... and I also spend a lot of time in Hawaii so that was an extra bonus. Their fried rice with Kalua Pork is absolutely delicious. My husband is addicted to katsus and he loves the katsu from here.
