Ok, so my mom saw this place featured on a TV show, so we figured we'd check out what all the hype was about. Honestly, it just goes to show you can't believe everything you see on TV. They were out of the brisket -- the one thing they're known for -- and said more wouldn't be ready for a couple of hours. Not a great start. The ribs were overcooked and burnt, the chicken was just ok, and while the mac and cheese and baked beans were pretty forgettable, the potato salad was actually the star of the show. Went for the current DineLA special, which is $45 for a platter consisting of multiple meats (pulled pork, brisket, chicken, jalapeno cheddar sausage, baby back ribs), 2 sides, cornbread, hush puppies, and a dessert. Our favorites were the hush puppies, jalapeño cheddar sausage, and ribs. Filling for a party of two! We easily found free street parking on a weekend around 1pm, but I believe they also have a lot in the back. The ambiance was cozy and casual. I have to dock a point because every piece of silverware at our table was dirty, and service was lacking. Staff was nice enough, but no one checked in with us during our meal, and we had to get up and find someone to ask for water. They also have a great Happy Hour deal on weekday, so I'll try that next. I came here because I was craving some bbq and I didn't want to go too far from my house. The restaurant has a small parking lot in the back, which made parking very easy. I literally had no food in my refrigerator, so I got "The Weaknees". They ran out of brisket, but the waitress told me that the links were really good, so I opted for those instead. First, the sides were really solid. I liked the coleslaw alot, as it had a very refreshing bite, and I also appreciated that it wasn't too mayo heavy! The cucumber salad was good as well, it was a great palatte cleanser in between meats. As for the star of the show, the meats were all very solid! Went here for the DINE LA special for $45 that serves 2 people. The Dine LA Special Includes: Hush puppies- be careful, they are really hot when they come out. The hush puppies goes well with their comeback sauce. It's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I really enjoyed them. Meats: BBQ chicken- average, a little dry Pull Pork- soft and juicy Brisket- really dry and tough, I didn't finish my portion of it, it was my least fav Baby back ribs- soft and had a lot of flavor Jalapeño Bacon Cheddar Sausage- great flavors and was really juicy 2 Corn bread: usually I don't like corn bread because it tends to be dry but the corn bread here is really good. The inside is really moist and one of the best I've tried. Two sides that you can choose from but we chose: Mac & Cheese- was not bad, but nothing special Potato Salad- really good and had good texture. Dessert: Key Lime Bar- I can't be a good judgement of this because I never really like key lime pie in general but my Bf enjoys it. The meats here are ok, I like their sides more. However when the food came out the meat was not warm or hot. We realized afterwards they were in warmers. I am a bbq snob...spoiled by my travels and have eaten the very best bbq in various regions across the US. It's kind of hard for me to eat just any bbq but I do enjoy Max City. I left Eagle Rock sometime before Max City opened this is the former location of the first weed shop I ever went to way back in 2007, ERHC(Eagle Rock Herbal Collective). Fortunately, the BBQ being smoked here is an improvement on the low-quality product being smoked here before. Wife and I joined friends at Max City BBQ after an outing to a local historical site, a little after 2PM. Decent parking in the rear, and ample unregulated street parking nearby. Quiet day, only two other seatings ahead of us. The single server on hand got to us fast for drink orders. We'd all scanned the menu beforehand, and so were ready to go pronto. Wife and I decided to split the Weaknees platter, a full variety of Max's offerings. Everything on the platter was good or better. I read some reviews that the meats are dry; not today. Brisket was moist and not too fatty, ribs were firm and meaty, pulled pork tasty and not swimming in some sauce, just plain smoked flavor. The chicken was solid, though not particularly stand-out. The baked beans, a little sweet for our taste but solid, and the cucumber salad was top notch. The cornbread muffins were OK, not too sweet, but not very corny (the one I saved for next day was better over night!). Service was...leisurely. We didn't get or need a lot of attention, but our server was quick with the dishes, and answered all our questions and needs promptly; also, she was nice - not a universal trait in LA wait staff. Pro tip: if you have a typical capacity and split the Weaknees platter two ways, plan on taking some home. We ate till buttons popped, and I surely do wish we'd've just taken the chicken and pork to go. I've a customer since they first opened thier spot. I have never been disappointed until recently. I ordered a meal I 've ordered quite often. I placed the order a day in advance for part of my Superbowl plans. To say what I received was unacceptable would be an understatement. The meat was overcooked. The ribs portions looked as they were from the very end and little to no meat on the bone a total disaster. When I called to voice my complaint , again I was disappointed in the response. While they offered to comp my next order it felt a little disingenuous. Like I said I'm a long time customer. When they are on their game this is a great place. That's a lot of ribs! Eight small bones with some dynamite smoke on them! And I love smoke on my meat. A little chewy but not in a bad way. Ribs aren't supposed to fall off the bone all the time, know what I mean. Sides were good too. Beans can be overcooked but these were a little under. Just a little. But that's a good thing because you know they didn't come out the can. They baked them in a really good good sauce that wasn't too sweet. Matter of fact it was perfect. Also got the cole slaw. Had a great lunch here early afternoon on a Sunday, we walked in and sat at the bar. It's a casual vibe and we had a really sweet server help us. We got the pulled pork sandwich and the brisket sandwich, and the meat was so juicy. The bun was toasted well and there were bottles of bbq sauce so I drenched every bite of the sandwich with the sauce. It was so good. We also got sides of the mac and cheese and the baked beans, very classic and good. We also got the cornbread as a Yelp check-in special and I'm so glad we didn't miss out on those. What a relief! Our last two bbq dinners were pretty dismal so my friend and I were thrilled with our fun and delicious experience last Wednesday. Max City is a gem. We shared the sampler so I can attest to how the goodness of all the meats. However, the ribs were my favorite. They were all the things: falling off the bone tender and the sauce!! Loved the sides, especially the potato salad and cornbread muffins. Service was respectable and fairly friendly. It's a small place so late Wednesday afternoon was a perfect time to visit. Max City is literally just a hop and a skip from my house and if not for self-control for over indulging or the pain and misery of gluttony lol, I'd be as huge as a house. To date my favorite is the Weakness tray - Half rack baby back ribs, quarter chicken, quarter pound pulled pork, quarter pound brisket. It comes with a cornbread muffin and two half pint of their traditional sides - I like the Mac & Cheese and depending on the cravings, I alternate between the mixed green salad or the collard greens from time to time...yum! I've never had a bad plate here at MCB, awesome service and peeps with great BBQ's which my fiance and I share and thoroughly enjoy, and of course my perfect topping for such a lovely tray of meat is to always end our dinner with a beautiful sweet, creamy and tangy slice of their delicious Key Lime Pie! I like that they improved the outdoor dinning spot near the parking area, if parking is full, do not fret as there are plenty of curbside parking to be had and honestly, a little walk after a dinner here wouldn't be such a bad idea. Listen this place has great meat, but that's about it. This is simply my personal opinion, but as someone who tries a lot of barbecue spots and steakhouses, I have to admit that their sides are lacking. I have been here multiple times throughout the years and their quality is pretty consistent. Their ribs and sauce that they offer are good. But, like I said, if you have the option to get sides (specifically the mac) from elsewhere.. then do so. The service is fine; no complaints there. When I went in, the girl that took my order it was super nice and helped me figure out what to pair. As for the space itself, it's a bit small, but I think they still have an outdoor area where you can sit, which is a plus. The inside is not the most spacious, but it's better than nothing if you want to relax and eat with some friends or even sit at the bar area (I included a picture of that below) and watch the game. Max city under performed. Honest review: I have heard amazing things about Max city in my time and I was super excited to try it. I sit outside and the atmosphere was great. The waiters were very friendly and they were great about refilling the water. My main issue was the food. I got that everything but bird which was well priced but the food was mediocre. I am someone that is big and barbecue and I found that the brisket was dry and not tender, the sausage was flavored nicely, but did not have good texture, the cornbread was pretty good. It was decent, but it did not have crust at all. The ribs were good, which was probably the best part about the meal. I would recommend the ribs. For $75 I think that it was a good amount of food, but I just think that they under performed some of the food was cold and the rest is the stuff that I said earlier. read more
